Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard’ is now out

We are delighted to announce Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘ has now been released.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it should help you plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season, which is not far away now.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark Sutherns, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

Order ‘Wasting Your Wildcard’ with Waterstones HERE.

Australian fans can order through Booktopia.

I think the safest thing is to start with Coleman, PVA and mee(all good fixtures) and swap them for the inevitable bargains in Chelsea (5.5), Arsenal(5.5/5) , Liverpool(5.0) when they rear their heads. Not to forget yedlin/dunk when their fixtures clear..

It is, you get one transfer a week, you could even take more if you wish.

Salah looked so sharp last night against city, albeit a weakened side, surely the risk of going without him is too large for gameweek 1!

Also the book is great I read it within 5 hours. 🙂

Is it worth going for any Man Utd players??

Thinking Sanchez but then I’d have to get a 5.0m mid to fit him in, is Sanchez worth it or spend on a couple of decent mid priced mids?

no, I'm saying players like Pva and Coleman will most probably not keep ENOUGH CS's for 5.5m.

Ok. Example: I don't think its impossible that PVA might Get 3-5 Clean sheets the first 10gws based on cp's defensive form last season and their run of fixtures. Based on his atacking threat, i'd also say its likely he'll Get 1-3 attacking returns.

If those assesments are "correct", would he then be worth the outlay?

If we work off the rough assumption that every 0.5m of compulsory spend needs 0.3ppg, and every discrecionary spend of 0.5m needs 0.4ppg, then a 5.5 defender needs to score 3.6ppg to justify his value.

so across 10 gameweeks, assuming he plays 90 mins in each, 36 points in total. If we assume 2 points per game for appearances, thats 20 points, so he needs 16 points of "extras" to justify his value. Thats 4 clean sheets only, or 3 clean sheets and a goal, etc. Obviously he might need a tad more than this to account for deductions like cards and 2 goals conceded etc, but it looks to me like he could quite easily justify a 5.5 outlay.

                      5. Christina.

So Tomkins only needs 27 points in 10 weeks?

27 or 28, yeah, he's a good option too of course and only needs 2 clean sheets in 10 matches to justify his value 🙂 To be honest there's a good case for any of the Palace back line: Wan Bassika as he's a playing 4.0, Tomkins for his set piece goal threat at 4.5, Sakho for his hoovering up of BPS at 5.0, and PVA for his goal and assist threat at 5.5. Down to personal preference really and whether you think one or 2 will justify the spend over the other.

If specifically comparing PVA and Tomkins then FPL managers need to ask themselves will PVA outscore Tomkins by 8 points or more over a period of 10 games?

I would say a mix of the two. But most seem to go all guns blazing with 3 or even more expensive def's.

Which is a perfectly viable tactic if you Get the right players. But spending heavy on the backline doesnt do squat if they are the wrong ones. Oh, and i wouldnt say most. Thats not my take based on FPL's selectiondata, and the RMTs on the site

It could make some of the premium attackers more of a differential. Hazard in particular could be overlooked, especially given Salah and Aubameyang are so popular.

I'm always open to a cheap backline.

Yeah, I enjoyed playing around in the members area yesterday looking for 4.5m def's with goal threat...

Not really many tempters at 4.5 outside of Cedric and Tomkins, Huddersfield, Brighton and Newcastle could emerge after tough starts

I see no 4.5s with much likelihood of getting more than 2pts, with the poss exception of Doherty.

There are a couple of 4.5m def's with goal threat that are ignored it seems.

I don't think the bench is too bad as Doherty should be a starter if you wanted to rotate him with someone?

Initial draft had Fabianski, Mendy and Cairney for Ederson, Azpi and Stephens and 1.0 ITB to get KDB when he was back but this is maxed out on budget. Don't like the lack of ability to get KDB.

    Cedric Soares.............

He's not been involved in any of Southampton's first 3 pre-season games. Not even on the bench

Any Saints fans care to enlighten?

    or does anyone know why?

I'd rather have Richarlison, Siggy, Tosun or even Lookman to be honest. Walcott can go whistle

Much prefer Richarlison, Walcott feels a nostalgia pick. Think Richarlison will be stronger this season with the summer break he has had after nearly 18 months of football. Also, Silva loves him and he was a 90 minute man for most of the first half until he ran out of gas.

Rate my team please ... unsure of Auba vs Agu or trying to get Sane over Mahrez or Zaha for Tosun?

    Patricio/Fabianski
    Mendy/Robertson/Azpi/Wan-B/Peltier
    Salah/Mahrez/Jota/Richarlison/Stephens
    Auba/Arnie/Zaha

10/11th draft of the team but 1st time posting, any feedback on the team would be most appreciated!

    Foster / Ederson

    Coleman / Tomkins / Wan-Bissaka / Cedric / Lowton

    Mkhi / Salah / Richarlison / Sanchez / Maddison

    Aguero / Zaha / Joselu

Considering moving Tomkins for another 4.5 out to bring Sorloth in for Joselu, but tbh I'm not sure it's overly worth messing with.

How's this looking guys, opinions please :-

    Foster Fabianski
    Ward Daniels Tomkins Cedric Dunk
    Sanchez Salah Mhki Cairney Neves
    Aguero Firmino Arnie

    £0 ITB

I like the bulk of it! Probably as it's similar to mine haha

I had Daniels but I've drifted away from him with Bou signing another left back for £10m making it difficult to work out who'll start regularly.

Then I'd swap Arnie for Zaha just based off of opening fixtures, Whm's run for the opening 12 is just plain nasty.

Sanchez essential? Good placeholder for Auba:

    Zaha -> Auba
    Sanchez -> Mkhi
