Great Expectations

Wood can offer value as key Burnley goal threat

Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

Agree on the Salah sentiment. If Neves rotates to your bench occasionally, that’s definitely the way to go. If you have to play Neves, I’m a little less thrilled.

      1-2 from open play

I’m thinking that about the 6.5 midfielders.

I’m struggling to find value strikers that I like, but there are plenty of premium options (9.0+) that I’m interested in.

It wouldn't surprise me if Kane, Aguero or Auba score more than all three put together.

Yeah, plus Big Sam basically didn't play him until they were safe from relegation.

Zaha scored 5 in the 6 games he moved up front. Should easily get more than 9 if he remains there.

Nothing fatally wrong with it, though I'm personally losing faith in the cheaper forward options. Zaha might play back out wide; Arnie has poor fixtures; Tosun might not play full 90 very often, if he even starts every game. Perhaps Wood is in the top 3.

Am I the only one who thinks United could struggle massively both in terms of CS and attacking points(obviously) first 6 gws.
Gw 1- Leicester at home. No pushovers even without Vardy and possibly have a goal in them. Could admittedly be 4-0 but think no CS for United.
Gw 2- Brighton away. United struggled both legs last season. Dont see a CS here too and not too many goals. May be 1-1
Gw 3- Spurs at home. Funny enough, can see a strong chance at a CS here. Classic 1-0 Mou win but then again Kane would definitely be back and ready though it'll still be August. 🙂 but obviously lack of attacking points
Gw 4- Burnley away. Struggle for everyone not just United admittedly. Maybe 0-0. CS but nothing going forward.
Gw 5- Watford away. This isnt Silvas Watford and they seemed to show a bit of steel defensively after the managerial change. CS possible though I dont think so but not much going forward too.
Gw 6- Wolves at home. Really the best looking fixture in the first six for me and the FDR seems to agree
Disclaimer: DDG is abnormal and could render all this info total nonsense

      Summary for me.
Stay clear of anything United except DDG and maybe Maguire or Alderweid if bought. Sanchez at 10.5 not worth it and hes the most assured attacker. United defence actually pretty average last season and DDG covered up for so much. If they improve that could mean fewer save points for him and more or less same amount of CS. Is he worth 6.0? Maybe but think better value elsewhere. My 2 cents

Don't expect many CSs but spend 6.0 on the GK?

DDG was set and forget for me at I think 5.5 last season and was awesome. 6.0 is too much for me. I personally prefer Ederson set and forget and then spend the 0.5 elsewhere. Last season, United had some really great fixtures to start the season so DDG got a good nice start. I don't think their fixtures are as good this year to start. What's your keeper combination?
