Schurrle an intriguing – and cheaper – midfield alternative to Sessegnon

Slavisa Jokanovic has added a World Cup winner to his squad with the loan capture of winger Andre Schurrle.

The German international, who was part of Die Mannschaft‘s triumphant side in Brazil four years ago, has joined Fulham on a two-year deal from Borussia Dortmund.

Schurrle, who is still only 27, returns to the Premier League after a three-and-a-half-year absence, having previously spent 18 months with Chelsea under Jose Mourinho.

Fantasy Premier League have listed Schurrle as a £6.0m midfielder in recent days, meaning the German wide-man is a cheaper option than Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) on the Fulham flank.

Although Schurrle has spent a large chunk of his career playing in Sessegnon’s wide-left position, the former Chelsea man is a versatile asset and would seem likely to line up on the opposite wing in Jokanovic’s customary 4-3-3 formation.

Upon signing for the Cottagers, Schurrle said:

Fulham were the first club that showed interest in me – that was something that I appreciated a lot, and one of the reasons I wanted to come here.

I love ball possession, I love attacking, and I love making runs, so I think it could be perfect. I have to fight for my place and I have to show my quality so that I can be a member who really helps the team.
In Schurrle, Fulham have signed a player with bags of top-flight experience: each of his nine seasons as a professional have been with clubs either in the Bundesliga or the Premier League.

The History

Born in November 1990, Schurrle spent much of his youth with local club Ludwigshafen SC before a move to Mainz in 2006. After progressing through the German side’s academy system, Schurrle made his Bundesliga debut in August 2009 and quickly established himself as a first-team regular.

After two seasons, 66 league appearances, 20 Bundesliga goals and eight assists for Mainz, Schurrle departed for Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2011.

Already a Germany international by this point, Schurrle went on to score 18 league goals for Leverkusen over the next two seasons, setting up a further 13 strikes for his team-mates.

Schurrle was to have his first taste of European football while at the BayArena, featuring in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League in his two-year spell there.

Only one of Schurrle’s 65 league appearances for Leverkusen was as a substitute, so his subsequent time at Chelsea would prove to be something of an exercise in patience for a player used to starting every match.

Having joined the Blues in June 2013, half of Schurrle’s appearances in his debut Premier League season were cameos off the Chelsea bench. The German winger was to complete 90 minutes on only three occasions in 2013/14, but still finished with eight league goals and two assists.

Chelsea’s title-winning campaign of 2014/15 started in a similar vein and after only five league starts and nine substitute appearances for Mourinho’s side, Schurrle returned to the Bundesliga in the winter transfer window.

His half-season contribution for Wolfsburg helped the German side to a second-place finish, with Schurrle not only winning the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) with his new side but also collecting a Premier League winners’ medal for his efforts at Stamford Bridge.

A successful season in 2015/16 (Wolfsburg were to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League) led to a summer transfer to Dortmund, but his two years at the Westfalenstadion were dogged by injury and a lack of starts.

The Prospects

The right flank was a problem position for Jokanovic last season, with Floyd Ayite and Neeskens Kebano (both £4.5m) plus loan signings Sheyi Ojo and Lucas Piazon among the midfielders fielded there during Fulham’s promotion-winning campaign. Aboubakar Kamara, a £4.5m forward in FPL this season and currently the most popular budget striker in the game, ended the season in that role.

With Sessegnon a fixture on the left flank and Jokanovic’s central midfield trio likely to be Jean Michael Seri (£5.5m), Tom Cairney (£5.0m) and, barring any further reinforcement, Kevin McDonald (£4.5m) or Stefan Johansen (£5.5m), then Schurrle would seem set for that troublesome right-wing role.

The Cottagers are also light up front, however, and while Jokanovic will almost certainly recruit a striker or two before Gameweek 1, Schurrle is capable of playing “out of position” as the spearhead of the Fulham attack – as he did on occasion for Dortmund last season.

Fulham’s opening run of fixtures are a mixed bag, although home matches against Crystal Palace, Burnley and Watford in the first six Gameweeks would likely tempt FPL managers into drafting in one of Cairney, Sessegnon or Schurrle.

Despite his 2017/18 campaign failing to ignite, Schurrle’s underlying attacking statistics hold up well to scrutiny. The German winger had an attempt on goal every 34.3 minutes, a far better rate of chances than Sessegnon (72.1) or Cairney (52.7) recorded. It should be said, of course, that Sessegnon spent half of last season at left-back.

Twenty-six of Schurrle’s 36 attempts on goal came from inside the box, with six deemed “big chances”.

Cairney’s ability to dictate play could further Schurrle’s goal threat: no Championship player who made more than ten starts had a better passing success rate (91.3%) or made more passes per fixture (79.5) and Cairney’s rate of penetrating through balls (0.3 per match) was second only to Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers.

Johansen, meanwhile, created 92 chances for Fulham last term and Seri has recorded 15 assists for Nice in Ligue 1 over the past two seasons.

Schurrle’s own chance creation rate last season – one every 68.6 minutes – was a modest one, however.

Looking back to the German winger’s time at Chelsea, Schurrle scored 11 goals at a rate of one every 159.5 minutes – only Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling and the now-departed Philippe Coutinho bettered that rate among first-choice Premier League midfielders last season.

Schurrle was presented with a goal-scoring opportunity every 24.8 minutes in 2013/14, the best rate among midfielders with 30 or more appearances to their name that season. A chance creation rate of one every 49 minutes in the same campaign would underscore the suggestion that Schurrle is more likely to score himself than assist a goal – a happy problem for his owners in FPL this season if he was to replicate that pattern.

Anyone getting spurs players? What do you think about their fixtures?

5 away games in their first 7 is a bit ridiculous, and one of their two home games v Liverpool... not sure I could expect much from any spurs players during that spell.

Eriksen might need to wait until after the secon international break

Waiting for Eriksen is totally understandable given the fixtures.

I'm not fully settled yet, but atm I have him, simply because he is a very strong premium player who is totally nailed. Despite the tough early fixtures, Spurs will probably still score goals, and when they do there's a good chance Eriksen will be involved

When you compare city & liverpool’s Fixtures in the same period I think a 9.5 investment would be much better served with KDB, Mané, Firmino, Sané, Mahrez etc until we see if spurs can still return points despite the evil fixtures & World Cup disruption... when their fixtures get better I think it’ll be time for Eriksen, he may even be 9.4 or 9.3 by then too after a barren run

Erikssen is a great player but just an ok one of FPL. But when he plays, his teammates are good FPL assets. The lack of teammates now is a strange situation. Moura is my only consideration but he's not nailed. Btw I have enough evidence to show that kane and alli are average players without Erikssen. Son is my go-to spurs player for the past 2 seasons but he's not an option to start this season

Not keen on Jorginho, better BUR defenders than Ward imo (Tark/Mee) and the attack seems a bit weak. Try get a big hitter in there like Aguero or Aub

I think there’s more points potential in liverpool or City in defence in the opening weeks of the season. Having De Gea and Bailly is using up a lot of cash that could be better distributed in midfield.
Son is only available for the first game and isn’t assured a start even in GW1, Jorginho is a holding midfielder so unlikely to return decent points compared to similar prices midfielders at “smaller” clubs. Consider upgrading Jorg to Gudmondsen/Jota/Cairney, Son to Sane/Mahrez(check on his injury)/Richarlison and De Gea to Allison.
Firmino not assured a GW1 start afternoon WC duty so you could upgrade to Aguero/Auba or similar priced Lacazette

You’re right enough about him flourishing in Kane’s absence but Son is away to the Asian games after week 1 so even if he does play in GW1 and has a blinder you’ll have to transfer him straight out

Looks good but the usual - Son probably won't be available after GW 1 & Firmino might not start GW 1.

If Jorginho is 5s I've opted for Will Hughes. I like Watford's opening 3/4 fixtures and he looks like a starter.

      - Laca
      - VVD
      - Hard to know, both could be good, or both could be a waste of space, or anywhere in between
      - Mané probably scores more points per minute, but Firmino scores more over a season. For just the first few weeks I’d say Mané until he gets injured or sent off then switch to bobby

Gone for the Ederson leave and forget tactic myself, defence maybe a litttle weak but the outfield is ok. Would have Mahrez/B.Silva over D.Silva once you find out more news. Not keen on Pedro, would rather have Richarlyson, good attack force.

Yeah Rocharlison should be a very good pick. Pedro is doing well so far in the pre season games and with Hazard and Willian coming late, could well cement his place in the first few gw's.

I'm hot for Auba but you can't have everyone and his opening fixtures don't appeal to me. If I'm spending big on a forward its 'Gotta be Kane'. In regards to Laca I'd rather have Bobby for 9.5.

the lack of b.davies in peoples teams is a bit of a surprise. he has had a full pre-season. was the number one left back for spurs last year, and with rose not having returned to training yet, he should be ok to start the season.

looking at his minutes last season he appeared to play 90 mins, or nothing at all - only two times where he came on for a 1 min cameo. In those starts he got 2 goals and 7 assists, delivering attacking returns 1 every 3 games started on average.

I think youve just answered your own argument on why Davies is not in a lot of teams right there.

There are many sub 6.0 defenders who can get you 16 points (or more) in the first 4 weeks, and 23 points (or more) in the first 6 weeks. By that time 2 international breaks will also have been in play.

I think the same argument applies to all spurs players, best to avoid until after second international break.

Laca's recent goals aren't sign of a striker in rich vein of form. But nevertheless he got them. I would say keep an eye on the preseason and then decide.
          Neves has tough fixtures.

Very similar to my team minus Neves, Laca and Coleman. I'd monitor Mahrez's injury update plus B.Silva has been on fire pre-season, £1.5m cheaper too

      taken from somewhere on twitter
we found last year sensitivity to price falls is more acute with low ownership as less people need to sell proportionate to the % owned to drive a drop. In effect, if 1m own player X and 1k own player Y, far more X need to be sold to enact a drop. So other way round!

After a few weeks of not changing my team.
I have read that Sane is injured.
I was not really sold on Eriksen (fixtures half a spurs team).

    It is now:

    A) Sane and Aubameyang

    v

    B) Sanchez and Lacazette

    B looks fantastic on paper.
But then I start thinking Sanchez is not 'Arsenal Sanchez' this is 'Mourinho Sanchez'.

The other plus point of B is that as I do not have Salah upgrading from Sanchez to Salah is more viable only 2.5.

Is Sanchez really that bad a pick is there value there?

Well I have a backup plan for that.
Wan-Bissaka will hopefully come off the bench as my first sub likely to get a clean sheet against Fulham.
So that will give Bailly another week to rest.

Mourinho clearly rates him as a player and person so I think that should give him the edge over the other centre back contenders over the season.

          That is my theory anyway!

I just read these Mourinho comments 😀

    https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/jose-mourinho-shocks-manchester-united-12998773

When asked whether the ability of the squad - minus the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku - has caused concern for Sanchez after the game, Mourinho had a rather snappy response.

"Look, do you want him to be very happy with the players he has around him?," said the Portuguese.

"We are here just to survive and to have some not very ugly results. Alexis is the only striker we have. And the poor man is there trying his best."

I also don't see the debate between Aub vs Laca, Aub has better PPM and the bookies have him pretty high as winning the golden boot. Is it just because Laca is £1.5m cheaper? Will they play up front together?

I'm not, £5m mid as 5th mid. I cant understand why people are going for bottom priced defs, mids and fwds. I got burnt doing that last season as my 4.0m def dropped to 3.9m within a week or two and I then had to sacrifice another player just to get a bench player. Just my opinion though.

Choosing bargain basement players with high % ownership isn't that risky, because it'll take a mass exodus for prices to drop.
That being said, id want money itb to be able upgrade a wan bissaka to Tompkins or a jagielka to Keane etc.

          Maybe, but after last season personally I'm not comfortable with it, I would rather have 2 x 5m mids or 2 x 4.5m defs than 1 x 5.5m mid + 1 x4.5m and 1 x 5m def + 1 x 4m one.
