Transfer Window Watch – An FPL Round-up

A relatively quiet deadline day exploded into life in the last half-hour of the transfer window, with a number of eye-catching deals potentially causing Fantasy Premier League managers a dilemma or two ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline tomorrow night.

We take a look at the key moves that could affect our thinking with less than 24 hours to go until the 2018/19 Premier League season kicks off at Old Trafford.

Yerry Mina/Bernard/Andre Gomes to Everton

One of the busiest clubs on Thursday were Everton, who completed the triple signing of defender Yerry Mina, winger Bernard and central midfielder Andre Gomes with minutes of the window remaining.

Bernard’s was the first of the three transfers to be officially confirmed by the Toffees and it is perhaps his capture that generates the most intrigue.

The Bosman signing from Shakhtar Donetsk has played the bulk of his career on the left wing, but as FPL managers are well aware, that position is also where summer capture Richarlison (£6.5m) is predominantly stationed.

Marco Silva’s comments upon Bernard’s unveiling played up the pint-sized free transfer’s versatility:

Bernard is a quick player, very good technically and he can play on the left or right wings and as an offensive midfield player behind the striker.

That would immediately put Theo Walcott (£6.5m) and even Gylfi Sigurdsson’s (£7.5m) pitch-time at some risk, depending on where Silva ultimately decides to field Bernard for the Toffees. Certainly, Silva’s evident love of Richarlison and the amount of money Everton splashed on the former Watford star would suggest that the £35m buy will mostly be rotation-proof in Silva’s 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 set-up.

Bernard scored on 14 occasions and set up another 24 goals in his 95 league appearances for Shakhtar.

Mina, meanwhile, would appear to be a shoo-in for one of the centre-back spots, probably alongside Michael Keane (£5.0m). Phil Jagielka (£4.5m) was the only other fit centre-half available to Silva before Mina’s arrival after the departure of Ashley Williams and the injury to Mason Holgate (£4.5m), but the club captain’s 35-year-old limbs have struggled in pre-season and Jagielka would seem set to play back-up at best.

Mina barely featured for Barcelona during his time at the Nou Camp, but his goal-scoring exploits for Colombia at the World Cup will be of much interest to FPL managers: the 6’5″ centre-back scored three goals in as many matches, all headers from set-piece routines.

Andre Gomes is another Barca player to make the move to Goodison Park, this time on a season-long loan deal. The Portuguese central midfielder is unlikely to be of much interest to Fantasy managers, however, having scored on only three occasions for the Catalan giants in two seasons with the club. Gomes is also without a goal in 46 appearances for his national side.

Joe Bryan (plus four more) to Fulham

While not, with all due respect to Joe Bryan, one of the more earth-shattering moves to happen on deadline day, Fulham’s capture of the Bristol City defender could have positive repercussions for one of the Cottagers’ most popular FPL assets.

The 24-year-old left-back’s arrival means that Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) will likely be free of his part-time defensive duties, having played a chunk of pre-season (and half of 2017/18) in Bryan’s position due to the lack of alternatives available to Slavisa Jokanovic.

Sessegnon, owned by over 10% of FPL managers, will now be free to resume his role on the left flank of Fulham’s front three, although a knock-on effect will likely mean even fewer minutes for Aboubakar Kamara (£4.5m), with Andre Schurrle (£6.0) now set to be deployed on the right wing.

A former winger himself, Bryan could dovetail nicely with Sessegnon on the left flank and offers the prospect of some attacking returns, having scored on five occasions (and assisted a further three goals) for Bristol City last season.

Bryan said:

Playing against Fulham the last couple of years, the style of play has really stood out to me and it will suit me. I’m used to playing fast attacking football, so hopefully I can slot right in.

Elsewhere in west London, striker Luciano Vietto has joined the club on a season-long loan from Valencia, but will surely only play back-up to Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m) in attack.

Fulham have, curiously, also signed Seville’s former first-choice goalkeeper Sergio Rico on loan, just weeks after snapping up Besiktas custodian Fabri (£4.5m).

Timothy Fosu-Mensah has joined the Cottagers on loan for the season and could threaten Cyrus Christie’s starts at right-back (£4.5m).

Fulham wrapped up their summer spending with the £30m capture of Andre-Frank Anguissa, although the talented defensive midfielder is not a name that FPL bosses will be particularly excited about: the Cameroon international failed to score a single league goal in 79 Ligue 1 appearances for Marseille.

Mateo Kovacic to Chelsea

Signing on loan from Real Madrid for the rest of the season, the deep-lying midfielder’s arrival could spell bad news for the likes of Ross Barkley (£6.0m) and Cesc Fabregas (£6.5m).

Kovacic looks a strong candidate to line up alongside Jorginho (£5.0m) and N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) in Maurizio Sarri’s central midfield three, although FPL managers needn’t get too excited about the Croatian’s arrival: Kovacic scored on only one occasion for Real during his three years at the club. The former Inter Milan midfielder also has just one international goal to his name from 46 caps.

A deep-lying playmaker with the ability to drive forward and kick-start attacks, Kovacic could however be well rewarded on the Bonus Points System. The Croatian completed 87.5% of his take-ons in La Liga last season, the highest percentage of any player who attempted 15 or more dribbles, while his passing accuracy of 93.7% was the best in the Spanish top flight.

While new goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) will likely be given his Chelsea debut this weekend, Kovacic has admitted that he himself lacks match sharpness:

I haven’t trained a lot at Real Madrid because I badly wanted to come to Chelsea so I didn’t do much training. I will give my best to be ready [as soon as possible]

Danny Ings to Southampton

Liverpool’s Danny Ings (£5.5m) has joined the Saints on a season-long loan deal, which is set to be made permanent at the end of 2018/19.

Ings’ capture is an intriguing one and casts Charlie Austin (£6.0m) and Manolo Gabbiadini’s (£6.0m) pitch-time into further doubt.

After three injury-hit years on Merseyside, Ings will – barring further fitness setbacks – surely see more minutes under Mark Hughes, who has rolled out a two-man attack for much of pre-season.

Still just 26 years of age, Ings hit double figures for goals in his last full season (2014/15) for Burnley in the top flight and is a budget forward to monitor in the coming weeks, particularly given Southampton’s favourable fixtures in the first few months of the season.

Caglar Soyuncu to Leicester City

One of two centre-backs to sign for the Foxes on deadline day, Caglar Soyuncu has joined the club from Freiburg for a fee that could rise to £19m – although the deal is still subject to a work permit being granted.

The Foxes are short in the heart of defence, with Wes Morgan (£4.5m) and Yohan Benalouane (£4.0m) the only options available to Claude Puel for their final pre-season friendly against Lille last weekend.

Harry Maguire (£5.5m) has only just returned to training with City, while Jonny Evans (£5.0m) is struggling with injury.

The Foxes also signed Filip Benkovic from Dinamo Zagreb earlier in the day, but the young centre-back appears to be one for the future. Puel said of his new arrival:

Filip is an exciting young player who has the potential to develop even more at Leicester City Football Club. He has made a big contribution to Dinamo Zagreb over the last three years and has also benefitted from experiencing European football. I know he will give us some great options and competition in the squad and I’m delighted to have him here.

Carlos Sanchez to West Ham

The experienced Colombian international has joined the Hammers from Fiorentina, though the defensive midfielder is not a name that will appeal to Fantasy managers: in his two years with Aston Villa in the Premier League, Sanchez scored on only one occasion.

The transfer, however, may put Declan Rice’s (£4.5m) “out of position” status at risk. Rice had lined up in central midfield in pre-season, despite being listed as a defender in FPL.

Leander Dendoncker to Wolves

Leander Dendocker became Wolves’ 11th summer signing after joining from Anderlecht. The defensive midfielder, who can also play at centre-back, has joined the newly promoted club on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal next summer.

The Belgian international’s arrival adds competition for Ruben Neves (£5.0m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) in the centre of the park, while also giving Santo cover at centre-half. Romain Saiss (£4.5m) has struggled in the defensive three since dropping back there this summer and it could well be that Dendoncker first gets a run in the team at centre-back, with Neves and Moutinho now established in the double-pivot.

Dendoncker made 171 appearances for the Belgian club, scoring 11 times and providing four assists.

Jordan Ayew to Crystal Palace

The Eagles’ loan signing of Jordan Ayew from Swansea City is a thought-provoking capture, not least for the potential impact on Wilfried Zaha’s (£7.0m) starting position.

Ayew scored seven goals for the Swans last season in 36 appearances, averaging a chance every 43.3 minutes.

While Ayew will likely begin life at Selhurst Park as a back-up forward to Zaha and Christian Benteke (£6.5m), the situation is one to monitor in the first few Gameweeks of the season. Should Zaha be shunted out to the flank to accommodate the Ghanaian striker in the future, then Zaha’s appeal as a £7.0m forward would be somewhat dented, given the attractive alternatives available in the same price bracket.

Lucas Perez to West Ham United

For Zaha, read Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Lucas Perez has joined West Ham United from Arsenal for a reported £4m. The 29-year-old forward made only 11 league appearances (just two of them starts) for the Gunners in 2016/17, before spending all of last season on loan at Deportivo.

Perez scored six goals in 32 La Liga appearances in 2017/18 and gives Manuel Pellegrini another alternative in attack, with Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez (£6.5m) previously the only fit options available to him.

Perez’s path to the West Ham first-team would perhaps seem less straightforward than Ayew’s at Palace, however, and there would appear little threat – at this early stage – of Arnautovic being restationed from his centre-forward role.

The Best of the Rest

Neil Warnock has added much-needed depth to his central midfield with the signings of Victor Camarasa from Real Betis and Harry Arter from Bournemouth on season-long loan deals.

Warnock was forced to play centre-back Sol Bamba in an advanced role in the 2-1 loss to Betis at the weekend, a match that Camarasa didn’t feature in.

Brighton have signed 27-year-old right-back Martin Montoya from Valencia on a four-year deal. The move could spell the end for Bruno (£4.5m) and Ezequiel Schelotto (£4.0m) in the full-back position.

Federico Fernandez will provide competition for Fabian Schar (£5.0m) and Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) at centre-back for Newcastle United, meanwhile.

How do you rate your team's transfer window? Any positions you felt needed boosting? Are you content? Do you feel positive about it? Please, share your opinions!

As a Leicester fan, I'd give our window an 8/10.

Whilst we lost Mahrez, it was always going to happen this window. What disappoints me is our replacement for him (Rachid Ghezzal, Algerian international) is literally a pound shop Mahrez. He's had a shite two seasons, although these weren't entirely his fault and there still is hope for him to turn out decent, I would have hoped we would have been in for someone decent, and certainly hoped not to have signed him for the 14 million fee some outlets have been noising about. On top of this, 60 million for Mahrez is a bit insulting. He is worth more in today's market, but after keeping him around for two seasons longer than we thought he'd stay I suppose it's fair enough. Also, we seriously overpaid for our backup goalkeeper, who by most accounts is generally average (although he is admittedly better than Jakupovic and Hamer).

These, above, are the only reasons I haven't rated our window 10/10, because now our wingers really look weak, and our pants were pulled down a little bit on Ward. Our business looks like:

    Incomings
    £ 20-25 million for Maddison
    £20-25 million for Pereira
    £12.5 million for Ward
    £11-13.5 million for Benkovic
    £7-14 million for Ghezzal
    £3 million for Evans
£19? million for Soyuncu (pending work permit approval)

    Outgoings
    £60 million for Mahrez
    £17.5 million for Musa

Where to start with the good news? For starters, managing to offload Musa for anything above 10 million is a massive success. Evans was a huge bargain, and relegated Morgan from the 1st eleven (who should never start for us again after United away on Friday). Then we kicked Morgan and Benalouane so far down the pecking order we shouldn't even see them on the bench, with two amazing looking young talents in Soyuncu and Benkovic at CB.

Ward should keep Schmeichel on his toes - a capable 2nd keeper is something we've needed, and whilst he certainly doesn't look good enough to unseat him, there may be some extra motivation for Kasper to perform now. Now for the two real successes of our window.

Maddison: This guy looks absolutely mint, and I'm with the Norwich fans now when they say he'll be an England international by the end of the year. We've been crying out for a real No. 10 for years, and his creativity should go a way to replacing the hole Mahrez has left (plus he can't be double marked as easily as Mahrez was out on the wing). He loves through balls, which should complement Vardy quite nicely, and he's also only 21. He also adds absolutely filthy free kicks to our locker.

Pereira: In Puels high press high possession style, attacking fullbacks are a must. Simpson was sorely caught out last year in this position, and was one of the many reasons we went on that awful run of form after the winter window, as Puel began to transition the team into an entirely new, uncomfortable style of play. Pereira was the best signing we could possibly have made. Rated as the 10th best fullback in the world by 4-4-2 magazine, he's looked really really good in preseason and up for the PL challenge. Him and Chilwell overlapping on the wings is a prospect to really look forward to (for me, at least 😛 )

Penultimately, we showed to the world again that we really don't care that we're a small club - we sell who we want, when we want to. Sure, we let Mahrez go, two seasons later than everyone thought we would, but we basically gave a big f*** you to United when they tried to poach Maguire off us. We also sent off Chelsea when they were in for Schmeichel. This really shows our ambition.

Finally, Puel really had his stamp on our transfer window, which shows us that the owners are really placing their trust in him for the season to come, suggesting we might finally seek some stability in the managerial position. Ball-playing CBS, Pereira said that the clincher for him coming was Puel at the helm (He's an ex-player of his) even Ghezzal played under him at Lyon in the youth academy. All this is showing me that we're challenging for Europe this season 🙂

Also, we didn't even spend our whole budget (we have about 25 mil left according to ITK estimates) so plenty left for the winter window just in case.

I think, depending on whether Puel decides to go 3 at the back with Soyuncu, Evans, and Maguire, that that could very well be the template, with a wingback, Maddison, and Iheanacho in a 3-5-2. As it is, we'll see how he bloods the new CBs in. I'm just really excited about the season to come!

I haven't got any stats on me at the mo, but he was the defender with the most completed dribbles in the portuguse league last year, iirc. He also is quite attacking. Probably not the same penchant for bonus, but he should be good for it, and should get a fair few goals and assists over the season.

      West Ham 8/10.

We've signed 9 players who could easily form part of the first eleven. Unfortunately, I'm not convinced we've strengthened enough in CDM which is why I've gone for 8/10.

I've been impressed by the manner of the transfers, with fewer leaks than previous seasons, it feels more professional.

Anderson, Yarmonlenko and Perez all add proven quality to our attack options. Alongside Arnautovic I can see us scoring quite a few this season. I think Perez in particular is a bargain at £4m, with the second most chances created in last season's La Liga (second to Messi).

It's in central midfield that I'm most concerned. We have been crying out for a proper defensive midfielder, or if we can stretch the budget, an all action midfielder in the mould of Kante. Instead, all we've done is sign 32 year old Sanchez. This is after selling Kouyate. Wilshere feels like a good signing, but he is likely to replace Noble rather than Kouyate. I can still see our midfield being overrun and conceding plenty.

In defence we've made some decent signings in Diop, Balbuena and Fredericks. All are fairly young but none are proven in top leagues. I think Fredericks will have the biggest impact this season.

I'm pleased with Fabianski in goal. I'm not sure he will start between the sticks, but he is genuine competition to Adrian.

Overall I'm pleased with the level of investment, I just wish some of it had been spent in other areas of the pitch. I can see plenty of high scoring matches for West Ham this season.

😀 thanks for this! Do you think that besides the CDM issue that overall you'll be better defensively with your new additions, or will Fabianski have to carry your defenders a lot?

We may keep clean sheets due to possession against weaker sides. Against the top 10 I can see the ball being turned over and opposition running through a midfield of Noble, Wilshere and Rice. Fabianski will be raking in the save points against these teams (if he starts over Adrian).

      Newcastle: 3/10

We needed a left back and #10 badly, as we have done for years. Dummett gets injured and we resort to Manquillo...

£28m in profit from player sales. We didn't spend any of the TV money.

It killed the relationship between manager and board. Fans are therefore angry, the players are equally annoyed at the board as they'd appreciate ambition.

The only positive is that the players that have been brought in, are better than those we've sold. But then Kenedy and Rondon are only here for a season.

If we stay injury free, we're fine and I think we do well. One injury to a key player and we're serious relegation candidates imo.

      United fan:
      4/10
Fred looks like a good player who will massively help pogba-he is definitely good enough but we have slightly overpaid
Lee grant is possibly the greatest signing of the window-a steal for one of the most experienced keepers around
Dalot looks like a decent prospect but not seen much of him yet
We needed a more creative KdB like player and a new world class winger. I am very happy with a CB partnership of bailly and lindelof with smalling back-up

      Arsenal 6/10
Another CB and a decent Winger would have made it 10/10.
2 very talented DM's in Torriera and Guendouzi. Decent keeper for not much money.
Attack is fine until January without a Winger, unless injuries hit hard.
CB position is in shambles though. Mustafi and Sokratis starting with Holding and Mavrapanos backup. Lol. Don't get why we sent Chambers on loan unless we were signing another guy. Let Soyuncu who was heavily linked join Leicester.
Can see us concede a lot unless Mustafi steps up his game.

I think 6/10 is a bit low but I agree the CB situation is mind boggling. The only explanation I can think of is that Koscielny's recovery is going very well. Also, the failure to sign on Ramsey is a big concern. I think the club should have set him a deadline of atleast a couple of weeks ago to sign. If he didn't sell him and get a replacement box to box.

You think Mahrez is worth more than 60mil? 😆

Mahrez is a good but not great player. Technically fantastic but low work rate, terrible decision maker and very selfish. The reason you got 60mil was because City are stacked. 60mil for Mahrez is a great deal for Leicester.

      West Ham 9/10

Got the manager we needed and finally heavily invested in some quality players. Have loads of strength out wide and up front and finally some depth in central defence. All we needed to make this the perfect transfer window was a quality ball-winning midfielder. Noble and Wilshere are good playmakers but don't think they'll be winning the ball back a lot, was probably a mistake letting Kouyate go.

      Fulham

      In
      Jean Michael Seri (Nice)
      Maxime Le Marchand (Nice)
      Fabricio Agosto Ramirez (Besiktas)
      Andre Schurrle (Borussia Dortmund)
      Aleksandar Mitrovic (Newcastle United)
      Alfie Mawson (Swansea City)
      Calum Chambers (Arsenal)
      Sergio Rico (Sevilla)
      Joe Ryan (Bristol City)
      Luciano Vietto (Atletico Madrid)
      Timothy Fosu-Mensah (Man Utd)
      Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (Marseille)

      Out
      Ryan Fredericks (West Ham)
      Stephen Humphrys (Scunthorpe)
      Elijah Adebayo (Swindon)
      David Button (Brighton)
      Tayo Edun (Ipswich Town)

Strengthened in all positions and got really good back ups. LB was a priority on deadline day to free Sessegnon to play forward.

      3/10 -Arsenal
Leno was seems like a good addition.
Defensive mid seems to be sorted with good cover.
Deffenders we brought in arnt adding anything but cover and too old to get any money back (I would have rather spent elsewhere and no got sokratis and kept chambers).
Needed a pacy winger to add depth
if 2 of auba/laca/ozil/Rambo/Miki get injured for a significant spell we have to rely on young untested players as back up will struggle for top 6 if that happens.
Let's hope we can loan a winger b4 the loan window is closed.

Last year everyone was raving about what a brilliant summer Everton had. Time will tell for all the teams that have brought in a ton of players.

I’m actually pretty happy with Spurs’ summer. The key now is that Poch and Toby patch things up. We could potentially play Trippier-Sanchez-Alderweireld-Vertonghen-Davies at the back. Wouldn’t swap that for any other defence in PL.

We had been linked with Maddison in the past. Sounds like he would have been a good signing.

      8/10 if Toby plays.

Fernandinho is a defensive mid, no good for FPL.

The rest is ok, your subs are weak, but pretty common to see the Stephens, W-B, Peltier bench

@DanStoke82: Great suggestion. I will do so.

I will also look for a replacement of Fernandinho.

Thank you all for your feedback!

Well, I’d give your front line a ‘Triple A’ rating!

The front three have basically determined the rest...I've spent a lot on 4 players.

    Will Kepa start on Saturday?

Would of thought so considering the amount they have paid. There’s no way Caballero or Rob Green will start ahead of him

Not sure, Willy might play the first game imo.

I have a 1 mil itb, where best to spend it.

    A) Tomkins to pva (or any other 5.5 def, Bailey or luiz etc)
    B) Richarlison to Siggy
    C) foster & Patricio to DDG & 4.0 (I have no utd cover)
    D) save it, can be useful to use when we’ve got more data on players

Mendy. No brainer. 6.0 defender should never be benched

To be fair to my question, it shouldn't be a matter of price but rather fixtures. That's the mentality which got me rank 41 last year. I swear I have benched walker and azpi to name a few, quite happily. Even though I agree with you for the most part, what your answer be based on the fixtures

I'd definitely bench Mendy for Daniels/Adam Smith for example. AWB and Peltier no.

Don't you fancy arsenal to score?

              I do but:

              GW1 Clean sheet odds:
              MCY: 29%
              CRY: 27%
              CAR: 25%

Wan-Bissaka and Peltier offer pretty nothing attack-wise compared to Mendy.
