An assist for Hazard scant reward for FPL managers who kept faith

Sunday’s most forgettable local derby was also the first to take place, as a somewhat flat Chelsea side sleepwalked to a 2-0 victory over their west London rivals.

Claudio Ranieri’s Fulham put up a spirited performance and are displaying more backbone than they previously did under Slavisa Jokanovic, but a lack of cutting edge in the final third was telling as the Blues banked their seventh clean sheet in 14 league matches.

Maurizio Sarri’s side never got out of second gear but, as we will discuss, the emphasis was on solidification at Stamford Bridge rather than a gung-ho attacking display that owners of Eden Hazard and Marcos Alonso would have yearned for prior to kick-off.

We round up all the goals, assists, Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and injury news from the Sunday lunchtime kick-off.

Chelsea 2-0 Fulham

  • Goals: Pedro (£6.3m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m)
  • Assists: N’Golo Kante (£4.9m), Eden Hazard (£11.0m)

If Eden Hazard‘s (£11.0m) owners had been told before kick-off that the Belgian playmaker would emerge from an encounter with the division’s leakiest defence with six FPL points, the vast majority would have been fairly underwhelmed.

In the end, Hazard’s excellent assist for Ruben Loftus-Cheek‘s (£5.2m) 81st-minute strike came as something of a blessed relief on what was another frustrating afternoon for the Belgian’s Fantasy investors.

Assist or not, a significant percentage of the FPL managers who own Hazard would perhaps have seen enough to jettison the Chelsea talisman with the Fulham game having been seen as a “last-chance saloon”.

Given the number of premium options elsewhere with better form and/or fixtures, pocketing the £11.0m needed for Hazard’s services would go a long way in funding moves for the likes of Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), Harry Kane (£12.3m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m).

There were flashes of promise, however: Hazard producing several darting runs in from the left flank and a number of cute passes, one of which should have resulted in an assist when Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) spurned a presentable opportunity midway through the first half.

One of Hazard’s four shots should also have culminated in a “Fantasy assist”, too, with substitute Alvaro Morata (£8.8m) blazing over the rebound after the Belgian’s effort was parried by Sergio Rico (£4.4m).

The Belgium international’s only other shot on target was a direct free-kick that was fired straight at Rico.

The portents were promising ahead of kick-off, with Giroud named in the starting XI over Morata – the French striker having been on the pitch for all seven of Hazard’s Premier League goals this season.

A third-minute goal from Pedro (£6.3m) also boded well for a fruitful afternoon of attacking returns ahead, though Fulham didn’t capitulate as they have done on several occasions this season and had opportunities to level the scores themselves before Loftus-Cheek’s late clincher.

The chastening 3-1 defeat to Spurs last weekend played a part in Maurizio Sarri’s thinking this week and was perhaps the chief reason why the Blues didn’t cut loose after Pedro’s opener, as the Chelsea boss explained at full-time:

I think that we were a little tense. We defended a little better than in the last match, of course. We can do better in the offensive phase, but today the result was more important.

We gave more attention to the defensive phase today in order to kill the match and got a very good reaction for the level of application and attention.

Now we have to start to play our football in a better way.

Pedro made only his second start in nine Premier League matches and registered more shots on target than any other Chelsea player, though regular rotation with Willian (£7.4m) surely awaits the former Barcelona winger over a packed December schedule.

The same is true of the hit-and-miss strike duo of Giroud and Morata, as Sarri confirmed after the game:

They need to find continuity. Morata had a good period, Giroud is in a good period so we need more continuity. But I think its very normal to sometimes play Morata and sometimes Giroud, we have to play every three days so it’s normal.

Giroud didn’t do a great deal to further his case for more game-time, wasting that aforementioned chance provided to him by Hazard and then prodding at Rico from a Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.3m) cross.

Security of starts is something we’ve taken for granted in the Chelsea defence this season, with Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) and the Blues’ entire back four all making the team for the 14th league match in a row.

While Sarri is not renowned for his rotation, there may be rests ahead in December for a number of his backline.

Though he banked a seventh clean sheet in 14 matches and remains the leading points-scorer among FPL defenders, Marcos Alonso (£7.1m) was well below-par against Fulham and was hauled off on 78 minutes.

Sky Sports reported that Alonso had been withdrawn with a minor knock (yet to be confirmed by the club or other media outlets) though to the observer it looked purely tactical due to the left-back’s poor display, with the premium defender having failed to make a single key pass or deliver a successful cross all afternoon. Alonso also looked vulnerable defensively, with much of Fulham’s attacking play coming down Chelsea’s left flank.

While Alonso remains high on our watchlist and still represents relatively good value for money (only Trent Alexander-Arnold is returning more points per million spent among outfielders this season), it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see him rested against Wolves on Wednesday evening – particularly with Manchester City to come on Saturday.

Mateo Kovacic (£5.8m) was pictured with an ice pack on his leg after being substituted, meanwhile, though Sarri merely said the Croatian was “a bit tired” after the game.

The club did confirm that Ross Barkley (£5.8m) missed out with a knock, however.

Loftus-Cheek could deputise at Molineux if either player is unavailable, with Sarri praising the youngster at full-time:

In the last few weeks, he solved me problems. I was really very happy after the Europa League match because I think that was his best performance from a tactical point of view. Today I felt Kovacic was a bit tired and I put him on without problems.I was sure about his impact on the match.

Sarri also praised another midfielder, N’Golo Kante, someone who he had criticised after the defeat to Spurs:

I think he played very well. He defended very well. He needs to improve a little more tactically but that’s natural. For the national team, he usually plays with two midfielders. Last season sometimes with a two and sometimes with three, but in a central position, so it’s normal that he needs to improve.

Today he was better when the ball was on the other side of the pitch, I remember only one mistake in the first half. With the ball on the other side he has to stay close to Jorginho otherwise for us it’s a big problem. Jorginho is well able to make passes through the opponents but he’s not so good in the defensive phase with open spaces.

Kante supplied the assist for Pedro’s goal after winning the ball in midfield and was noticeably prominent in attacking situations in the first half, racking up more final third touches than Kovacic and Giroud.

Another defensive-minded asset who caught the eye from an attacking perspective was Fulham’s Calum Chambers (£4.2m), who was once again used “out of position” in central midfield.

Chambers had more attempts on goal than any Fulham player and three of his side’s four shots on target, including a header from a corner that was well saved by Kepa.

Ranieri said of the on-loan Arsenal player’s display:

He played very well. He’s a good midfielder because he understands what I want and, also, when he has the ball, he moves it very quickly and in the right way. I’m very very surprised.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m), the most-bought FPL forward of Gameweek 14, didn’t have any meaningful attempt on goal but easier tests await in the coming weeks.

Mitrovic was paired up front with Ryan Sessegnon (£6.0m) in the first half, though Ranieri’s diamond formation was abandoned at half-time in favour of his more customary 4-4-1-1.

Ranieri said:

I tried to play with a diamond to close the central midfield for the Chelsea players because Chelsea want to pass the ball to Hazard, Giroud, Pedro and then from there attack the space or make one-two straight away and for this reason, I play with the diamond.

When you concede a goal from the beginning, it’s difficult. I changed the diamond at half-time and played with two wingers to make some problems to them and I think it was a good choice.

Tom Cairney (£4.8m) was a creative spark for Fulham in behind the striker(s) – creating three chances in total – and is perhaps a name to monitor as a budget-freeing, fifth-choice midfielder ahead of the Cottagers’ excellent run of fixtures from Gameweeks 17-20.

Andre Schurrle (£5.9m), meanwhile, missed the game as a precaution after he “felt a twinge” in training on Saturday.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso (Zappacosta 78′); Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic (Loftus-Cheek 67′); Pedro, Giroud (Morata 70′), Hazard.

Fulham XI (4-4-2 diamond): Rico; Christie, Odoi, Mawson, Le Marchand; Chambers, Seri, Cairney (Kebano 76′), Johansen (Ayite 45′); Mitrovic, Sessegnon (Kamara 45′).

**red face** 0ops, I wondered what all the fuss was about regarding my team value. I should have posted Arnie instead of Kane!!

I checked again when I say so many posts and realised that I'd typed my options incorrectly (wishful thinking)!!

So....now that's cleared up - what do you think about the team with Arnie instead of Kane 🙂

    Fab Pat
    Coleman TAA Doherty WanB £3.9
    Mane Sterling Martial Richarlison Sane
    Kane Jiminez Wilson

I'm considering Martial to Filipe -4.

Filipe's form is already over 3pts better already, and his fixtures are awesome.

Why now? He's going to rise a lot and I se martial continuing to fall.

Filipe is facing Cardiff at home next, martial is facing Arsenal, who MUST be scenting blood in the water.

Plus it would give me an extra half mil to improve my defence.

Salah, Martial, Aguero and Arnie to Sane, Felipe Anderson, Kane and Aubameyang for a -12. I had most the Sane and Kane transfers planned anyway, and decided Arnie had to go due to constant niggles, while Martial's benching was the end of him for me.

Salah, Auba, Kane, Sterling, Hazard – varying levels of success, varying levels of interest. But which do you think we should be buying, and which should we be selling?

Salah – A disappointing week for the Egyptian and his owners, but he could have scored some decent FPL points this week. As a non-owner, by blood pressure hit astronomical levels at various points during that game, but it’s the upcoming game I really fear. Burnley are conceding obscene numbers of shots, and seem to be the leagues real whipping boys, so Salah looks a prime option. Furthermore, following an early substitution, it looks like he will be far less likely to face rotation compared to most the other premiums around. However, his price coupled with disappointing returns might be too much for many, and he may well be used to fund many moves over the coming weeks.

Aubameyang – A fine performance for him today, 2 goals and an assist takes his tally up to 10 goals and 3 assists for the season, and (currently) is still 0.1m below what he started this year at. Arsenals upcoming games look excellent, with the next 5 all either being against teams that concede lots of shots or lower table opponents. Lacazette is another cut priced option, but we have a lot of uncertainties about game time there. Aubameyang certainly looks a great option over this festive period, but can he keep it up? With performances like these, you could see his price climbing over the coming days and weeks.

Kane – Great fixtures. Great pedigree. An impressive Spurs performance against Chelsea. All the ingredients are coming together for another lovely Kane troll. A disappointing performance for him today, with a grand total of 17 touches in the opponent’s half for him with some people pointing out that yet again he’d fallen deeper in the Spurs attack. However, he’s Harry Kane. Much like Aguero, Harry can turn it up, and quick. A midweek game against Southampton looks the perfect time to do that, and he should be a fantastic pick, especially considering he tends to start every single game ahead of Llorente.

City mids – Sterling has rocketed to the top of the FPL points tables with a string of fantastic performances, echoed by his rapid rise in price to 11.5m. Sane, meanwhile, has started to nail down some good game time with Mendy out, and has put in a number of dazzling performances. Both, however, look set to face a packed schedule under the threat of Pep roulette, meaning owners will surely be nervous to captain them for most weeks. Both, however, are looking great buys – if you can take the pain of them being benched, with this midweek game looking particularly dangerous…

Hazard – With his price going the opposite of Sterling’s, Hazard has been a popular transfer out for many. I missed the majority of the Fulham game today, so it’s hard for me to comment, but just a single assist from him in such a nice fixture must be a hard pill to swallow for owners, myself included. Somewhat shackled by Morata’s comedic performances (3 negative bps scores in a row, he must be trying to set a record or something here), Hazard’s interest from managers has certainly cooled. The fear factor is still there though – a top class talisman with some tasty fixtures will always be hard to sell. If his price continuous to fall, owners might be worried about what profits they had built up with him.

Aguero – I have to mention him. He’s class, he’s quality, and he’ll play upfront for city – what more do you want? Well, for him not to be carrying a knock for a start. It could be debated back and forth for a while, but he’s definitely a doubt for midweek. For what it’s worth, I don’t think he’ll play and will instead be saved for the Chelsea game at the weekend, but what do I know? Pep hinted at the importance of Jesus for Tuesday, but this could be interpreted in a number of ways, and Pep likes to keep us guessing. What do owners do? Keep in hope of him starting midweek? Sell for Kane or Auba? There’s lots of different plans that can used here, it often feels odd to sell such a reliable striker over such a small knock.

For me, I jumped fully into the City bandwagon with Sterling, Sane and Aguero joining Hazard in my team. As much as I want to sell Hazard now, I’m slightly lost on who I could bring in to possibly reward me enough to make the risk worth it, so Aguero’s head falls onto the chopping block. I’m a big Auba fan, but I have other plans brewing which are putting me off a little. Regarding Salah, I don’t think I will be able to watch the game without a giant sofa.

So what are your plans? Who do you have / had and who have you bought / looking to buy?

Aguero to Kane for Southampton then Kane to Auba for HUD, pretty happy with the rest of my team so I've got spare transfers. Auba the best pick for the short and medium term I rate.

Do like the look of Auba myself, fits in so nicely as a Aguero replacement too...

I guess if you are happy to use the FTs doing some back and forth work, it's a great plan. Wouldn't be as simple for me though, and still have memories of the Cardiff game earlier this year!

              Good luck! 🙂

Having this WC spare has been fun. Almost like having 2 WCs- the few weeks before the WC are like a free chance to target fixtures.
I'm also doing Kane 15 Auba 16. Wc 17. Have Mane not sane though.

Will hold Sterling, Sane, Aguero, Salah this week - unless Pep says nothing about Aguero (most likely) then prob out for Kane/Arsenal

You'll end up with the 3 most expensive players in the game there and Sane - how's the rest of the team looking?

Yeah that's why I'm not keen atm, and wouldn't ideally captain Kane either (vs Salah, MCI).
Need to sell Deulofeu but otherwise ok with it. Main issue this week is rotation, don't want to make a switch and find incomer benched/subbed on late.

Currently I have Salah, Sterling and Sane. My plan is to wait for the Burnley game to captain Salah then ship him out to get Auba or Kane (low chance it's the latter) with my 2 FTs. I do believe that having those City mids even with rotation is worth it in the long run.

My plans were forced on me tonight due to price rises, but these were my thoughts on some of them:

Salah - 13.0 is a lot for someone who is struggling to hit his form of last season, is scared of touching bonus points, and has fairly average fixtures over the next few weeks. Burnley is a potentially great send off for most, but in the end he tied up too much money for me.

Aguero - If we're being honest, most of us were talking about getting him out this week anyway. He's been poor away from home all season, and if he's carrying a knock then there's a chance Pep keeps him for Chelsea.

Sterling/Sane - Possibly the most in form players in the league right now. Sane at 9.3 seems an absolute steal, and arguably the most nailed City attacker imo.

                Kane - Likes a Christmas hat-trick...

Although those thoughts have resulted in me taking a -12 tonight, so they may be a tiny bit biased.

Nothing wrong with being biased, otherwise I would never be allowed to post 😉

A -12 makes me quiver at the knees, especially when taking out Salah is part of it! Your points, however, all make complete sense. I hope it pays off!

                Keeping Kun, Salah and Haz.

Long season yet and all 3 will be in the top end of pts scorers for sure.

How would you get any of those players in and out without taking hits in most cases... whatever you gain by shuffling and chasing will be tempered by the hits and ongoing uncertainty around your team dynamics.

I'm sticking with long term in mind.

Rival said something similar to me today about holding faith in your players and trusting that the returns will come. Do you think all 3 will match Sterling though? I'm becoming less sure with some of them as the season goes on, might bounce between a couple as the fixtures swing back and forth. Will be interesting to see which style of management works best over the long run!

I respect those who play the game in a more fluid and reactive manner - it can prove highly successful at times.

However I see FPL as a slow moving, judgemental and punishing entity that requires patience and a cool head to tame.

You are making me reconsider... I feel like Kun out is such a kneejerk, but it is an awful lot of money to have sat on the bench.

It is indeed..however my plan for this week for example, is to play Kun.. if he's does not feature... I'll have wanb coming on..

                    Doing bennett to wanb...

All depends on your squad depth and so many other aspects based purely on your specific set up.

Kun does like to punish sellers...almost as if he keeps an eye on the FPLStats website

I think I'm taking the plunge and bringing in Auba for Aguero with then bring in Sterling at the weekend for one of Haz or Salah.

I hate this, it feels so wrong to lose Kun, when I should be cramming my team as full as city as possible, but the doubts over whether he'll start this week and then away to Chelsea looks nothing as appealing as Auba at Home to Hudders.

Sterling seems too good a deal to pass up on.

I'm stuck in a similar boat. Was planning on bringing Auba in from the cold on a WC for the Huddersfield game, but the fear of rotation has put the wind up me and I might jump on this week, and protect TV a little.

Keeping Salah. Sold Hazard and Richy before this weekend for Son and Dilva. Had Arnie for a long time. Had Laca and Auba for a few weeks and keeping. Picked up Anderson a couple weeks back. Have Doherty, Lovren, TAA, Zaba, Bennett and Ryan GK. Plan to ditch Bennett for Balbuena with one FT. Looking at Rudiger for Lovren after City game.

Great post - very timely and captures all the premiums players we all want on our teams for the holidays!

I've been agonizing over Aguero out to either Kane or Aubamayang and kept flip flopping all day. I would like Auba, but feared not having Kane more (for Southampton and Burnley in the next three, especially). I'm still in front in my ML, so can afford to be a little more dull.

In the end, I used my two FTs to do Hazard --> Sterling yesterday (before any price moves) and just now did Kun --> Kane before Kun drops overnight.

We can't have them all, right? Salah is my other big hitter and hoping to get either a huge haul from him at Burnley midweek or another blank that will let me downgrade to Mane and use the funds to get another City mid.

At present have, Kun, Haz, Sterling, Sané off that list.
Really think I need either Auba or Kane, Auba has the form, nearly every shot on target is a goal?

That's one of the concerns about Aubameyang I think, will he be able to continue with his goalscoring or is it unsustainable?

I read somewhere that he is very clinical and his shots to goals ratio is up there and sustained when he was at Dortmund too.

I went with Kane early due to price drops but man, after seeing the derby and how deep he was coming I kind of wish I want for Aubameyang.

On WC and going for Sterling, Sane, D.Silva, and Auba as premiums. Silva becomes Son/Alli next GW.
I feel Auba will outscore Kane over this run, you forgot to mention that Auba won't have European games like the ManC, Liv and Spurs assets. I just don't see Kane justifying the price of 12.3M when Spurs haven't been blowing teams away, same reason for ditching Salah.

Tonight I was all set for Salah & Mitrovic to Kane & Siggy but I've now talked myself into Auba & Sane, I just think they're a better pairing long-term. I've deprived myself of the standout captain option but hopefully Sane & Sterling should keep pace. HAZARD to Eriksen next week provides a Spurs player for their run.

I really do not want to lose Salah, Hazard and Kun. You just that these players will deliver the goods.

It's controversial, but I can see Man U parking the bus effectively enough to limit Arsenal's chances. They kept Juve to just one goal in eavh game thanks to their anti-football. And I'd need to make a trip to DFS for a big sofa when Kane plays Southampton. But Auba is unignorable and that price is about to rise, so it's a very tough decision.

Although I don’t expect Man U to go all out attack. How much can Mou really park the bus at home? The fans would be furious to see that against Arsenal especially at home.

Mou does not give a $hit about anyone but himself so he will happily park the bus at home.

If he wins he 1-0 then completely justified and he will be gloating at the post-match

                Sterling / Hazard / Salah / Aguero

Two free transfers used up and now I have

                Sterling / Sane / Salah / Kane

May end up ditching Salah and Jimenez for Anderson and Auba..... but not for another couple of gameweeks. You can’t have them all

Excellent post. Great write up and also very relevant to many especially with the price rises that are about to happen.

I have Kane, Salah and Hazard as my premiums alongside Sane.

My plan is to switch Arnie and Hazard to Felipe and Auba for a hit.

It feels very knee jerky which is something I’ve avoided this season but I feel like the reasons can be validated.

Firstly I’ll be priced out if I don’t act tonight as I can’t absorb the prices rises unfortunately. Swapping Arnie to Felipe which is a side ways move for a hit doesn’t feel right but with Anderson’s form along with Arnie’s knee issues I think it may be the right call. Arnie is a great asset but he struggles to play 90 and is a constant rotation/injury threat due to this bone bruise. Anderson should play virtually every game. With the city mids always a rotation issue it would make it easier to not also carry Arnie.

Auba looked great today and while getting him in shouldn’t be based on one performance, Arsenal look to be playing well and they have some great fixtures. It’s essentially Auba to Hazard and although I think it’s a risk because Haz is a great option, with Chelsea’s form and fixtures I think it’s worth the risk.

I’ll also add that I’m trying to climb the ranks and these two differentials could help me do that. Although I do recognise Arnie and Hazard could punish me.

My 3 from this list are salah, sterling and aubameyang. Got the latter 2 in the past 2 weeks for hazard and aguero.

Feel like it's time to move on from the template. Hazard's performances have dropped a bit and Aguero has a knock and will possibly be rotated more with Jesus now like we always expected.

I'm keeping salah mainly because I'm captaining him against Burnely and will maybe reassess when I wildcard.

Kane still overpriced and overhyped by many on here. 3 pens this year have boosted his goal tally and he clearly isn't the same player. That being said he has a fantastic fixture this week and maybe I will have to get the sofa out for this one...

One week punt this week was Aguero + Mane to Mahrez and Kane.

WC the following week will contain Kane, Auba, Sterling and Sane.

All so explosive, plus a strong bench should smooth over the inevitable rotation issues.

I don’t think anybody is immune from rotation over Christmas, so best way is to stomach it, and prepare accordingly with good value, reliable and cheap bench

You need Sterling, arguably the best FPL player this year, seing how he has carried over his form from last season whére he ended on 7.5PPG. He is at 8.7PPG now, couldn't believe my eyes when I checked it earlier today.

Would these be good moves (looking at long term fixtures):

              This week:
              Hazard -> Anderson & Kun -> Kane (-4)

              Next week:
              Salah -> Sterling & Arnie -> Auba (-4)

              Ings to Arnautovic for -4?

Would mean double West Ham since I have Anderson.
