Doherty set for FPL price rise but underlying stats hint at more returns

Wolves’ Matt Doherty (£5.3m) joins Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.8m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.7m) in our Team of the Season.

The Irishman was a Fantasy favourite in a fantastic season for Wolves, who achieved a seventh-place finish on their return to the Premier League.

Doherty had great freedom to attack from the right wing-back position in Nuno Espirito Santo’s system, which yielded plenty of attacking returns for his owners.

Doherty came third in our end-of-season poll for Defender of the Year, gaining 12.81% of the vote and finishing just ahead of Double Gameweek hero Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m).

Trent Alexander-Arnold 970 25.25%

Matt Doherty 492 12.81%
Aymeric Laporte 484 12.6%

Virgil van Dijk 370 9.63%
Lucas Digne 127 3.31%
David Luiz 21 0.55%

THE STATISTICS

Doherty accumulated 144 points over the course of the campaign, in large part thanks to his four goals and seven assists as Wolves didn’t keep clean sheets too often (just nine in total).

He was booked on five occasions and managed to get his name on the own-goals chart for the season too, against Leicester way back in Gameweek 2.

Doherty put the ball past his own goalkeeper in Gameweek 2

The Irish international recorded four double-digit hauls in 2018/19, with three of them coming between Gameweeks 5 and 8. Those managers who identified his potential early reaped the benefits during that period before the masses jumped on him.

His underlying statistics were very impressive right throughout 2018/19. He registered 110 touches in the opposition box over the course of the season which was bettered only by Cardiff’s Sean Morrison (£4.7m) among FPL defenders (128). Doherty was much more productive with those touches though, outscoring Morrison by 47 points in the end.

Doherty registered more goal attempts (46) than any other defender in the league. The most eye-catching stat of all is that 40 of those attempts were from inside the box.

He was also ranked number one among players in his position for big chances, with nine.

In terms of defenders, only Brighton’s Shane Duffy (£4.7m) scored more goals (five).

In total, Doherty had 836 touches in the final third, 128 more than Manchester City’s Kyle Walker (£6.4m) and 182 more than his teammate on the opposite flank, Jonny (£4.3m).

SEASON RECAP

Doherty’s season started slowly. He managed to score just two points in the first three Gameweeks thanks to zero clean sheets and that aforementioned own-goal against Leicester.

He then went on his best points-scoring run of the season from Gameweek 4 to Gameweek 8, picking up four clean sheets, two assists and scoring his first goal of the campaign away to Crystal Palace. Over the course of those five matches, Doherty racked up an impressive 47 points.

Doherty’s biggest single Gameweek score of the season was his 15-point haul against Crystal Palace

By that point he was no longer a differential and, in typical FPL fashion, he followed up his hot streak by scoring just six points in his next five games to leave those managers who were late to the Doherty party very frustrated.

Gameweeks 14, 15 and 16 were productive for Doherty despite Wolves failing to keep any clean sheets, as he got an attacking return in each of them (two goals and one assist).

After that, there was nothing spectacular until Gameweek 37 when he provided an assist and picked up all three bonus points in the 1-0 win over Fulham.

During the second half of the season, Doherty was rotated by Santo a few times to the frustration of his owners. He played less than 60 minutes on four occasions, including one dreaded 59th-minute substitution, scoring zero points against Southampton in Gameweek 34.

OWNERSHIP

After the slow start to the season, Doherty dropped to £4.4m in Gameweek 3 which proved to be one of the bargains of the season for those who were lucky enough to get on him at that point.

He was owned by just 59,443 in Gameweek 1 and that figure had dropped to 39,336 by Gameweek 4.

The hot streak resulted in a surge of transfers for the coveted Irishman. In Gameweek 9 alone, he was snapped up by more than half a million managers. His ownership crossed the one-million mark in Gameweek 13, with his price also rising to £4.9m.

Doherty’s ownership and price reached its peak in Gameweek 29 when he was in over 1.6 million teams and cost £1.0m more than he did in August at £5.5m.

The season ended with Doherty as the sixth-most-owned defender in the game with an ownership percentage of 21.9.

THE PROSPECTS

Like many other high-achieving defenders, Doherty is set for a rise in price for the 2019/20 season. He reached £5.5m at one point this season and that could well be his starting price when the game is relaunched.

When you fork out £5.5m for a defender, you want clean sheets as well as attacking points. Those who do back Doherty from Gameweek 1 next season will be hoping Wolves are better defensively and can improve on their tally of nine clean sheets.

Santo is likely to continue with his tried-and-trusted system of three centre-halves which will again give Doherty the freedom to play more like a winger than a full-back.

Jonny has competition from the highly rated Ruben Vinagre (£4.3m) on the left but Doherty’s place in the starting XI should be fairly secure given how well he has performed this year: the Irishman is an integral part of Wolves’ attack, as well as their defence.

It will be interesting to see how many managers are willing to keep faith in him for a higher price.

Doherty is like a dream !!
Came in @ 4.4m in gw 5 & never left the team.
I have a feeling that he'd be too expensive next season though 😮

Alot of these solid FPL assets I'll look at, but (stating obvious) be duwn to their fixtures. If Wolves have good opening fixs then I think he'll be in from the off, especially at 5.5 which seems right price. But, then again how will Europe qualifying effect them

Agreed. I suspect Pereira will be 0.5 cheaper, Digbe will be more nailed and someone better value will emerge (Fredericks, Schar etc). Shame though. Europa is more off putting than price for me.

I see why he isn’t on the list but I’m wondering if Pereira might not be a really interesting option next season. Awkward price point perhaps.

I can see Rodgers might be good for him if Leicester are consistently less passive than they were under Puel. Also the end of season performance against City by Leicester was encouraging. They took the game to them and never looked like by overrun. More cs next season?

If he keeps his spot ahead of Zouma (I guess) and Christensen then Luiz could also be a decent premium differential. He’s another that flew a bit under the radar this season - good value for me when I had him.

Apologies if I’ve got this twisted but I had thought he started a number of fixtures oop. That was enough to do for Zaha who’s only really played up front because Palace strikers (such as they are) are more than a bit injury prone.

He played as a right winger when they had injuries early in the season. I think he was right back for every game under Rodgers.

Remains to be seen how many international games The Doc will get. For me McCarthy should play him left and Seamus right. Europa League will do him no harm. European football can only make him a better player. Not like any other wing backs will have such an attacking threat for a similar price.

                PvA perhaps.

They ended the season with very similar returns and price points. There was little to separate them on value over the season. I’m fairly sure I read somewhere that PvA was right up there with shots. If they come in at similar price points next year then for me the chief discussion is about nailedness and likelihood of defensive returns.

Doh wins imo not on likely attacking returns but because I suspect Wolves will be defensively more solid next time around.

I don't really get the Doherty hype. His success boils down to these hauls he had in the matter of weeks.

When we take the rest of the season into account (from GW9) then he only averages 3ppg. A lot of this boils down to a lack of CS from Wolves.

This puts him in the same class as Rudiger/Zouma/Duffy and not far ahead of Tarkowski/Morrison/Ecuele Manga. It was all about timing with Doherty - if we didn't catch those hauls through GW 5-8, then he wasn't worth owning especially at his inflated price, and not even at his original price imo.

As one who never had him I sort of agree. I was quite happy he became so template. But his underlying stats and FA cup returns show he could be value even at a higher price point.

Also I’m fairly sure the evidence is that newly promoted sides typically improve defensively in the second season*. If you add in some more cs then Doh looks better.

*read that somewhere so happy to be proved wrong

I luckily jumped on in GW3 so was very happy with his value as a fancy 4th defender. He kept getting points in cup matches which hinted at an upturn in points in the latter stages, but he was still worth owning.

The thing was when you watched Wolves games he always looked so threatening that it was hard to take him out, if anything he underperformed in terms of returns

Independently of last season's performance, if he comes @5,5 it could be very borderline decision (depending also on team structure / budget) of having vs not having him.

If we assume that TAA / Robbo / Laporte (?) are @6,5+ then it will be high competition for the 3rd defender - especially at this price range!

Doherty was actually better value than AWB and all other defenders who started out below £5.0m, based on points per million spent.

OK, Doherty is better value than AWB based on points per million.

AWB and Doherty actually had very similar records against teams outside the big six. Apart from their price, the difference was in their matches against the big six - Doherty averaged 2.5ppg against them but AWB only 1.3.

Laporte is a quality option, AWB an excellent cheap one, and Doherty a decent compromise.

I'm inclined to agree, actually, and didn't vote for him myself (went for Laporte instead).

As I said in a comment below, he was the best-value defender who started off below £5.0m based on FPL points per million spent but post-Gameweek 8 there was very little to be excited about.

Wolves massively underachieved in terms of clean sheets, based on xGC, big chances conceded and even plain old goals conceded (46 - 24 fewer than Bournemouth, who picked up one more CS), so you'd expect that to improve slightly next season. Not sure where Santo would strengthen, mind - a Bennett upgrade?

Nowt wrong with the attacking returns really (only one fewer than Robbo) so if there's a tightening up at the back then £5.5m will look OK. It's an awkward price though so if folk are doubling-up on Liverpool defenders and drafting in Laporte there's only so much money to go around elsewhere and it would take a good set of opening fixtures for me to consider him.

yes you're right that despite having a good record for total goals conceded, their distribution (few but often) hurt for FPL. i don't think this is necessarily predictive though, just bad luck for owners.

wolves finished the season with =5th best record for goals conceded. ahead of them are the top 4. if you want attacking assets from those clubs then it makes sense to pick the most attacking assets available in the bracket below. unsure why people find this confusing.

Yes but that doesn’t win fantasy points.

I’d only be interested if Wolves were more likely to get cs next season. Had they picked up more this one gone then Doh would have been a more valuable asset.

They might of course as I understand the trend is fit newly promoted sides to improve their record defensively second time out.

As it is I’m as interested in Palace (pva?) and Newcastle for my extra defender as both Roy and Rafa fairly often set out with a cs as a goal or to preserve one. Wolves under Nuno by contrast looked more prepared to keep on pushing forward and the fewer cs doesn’t especially surprise me.

I’m going to go for the super heavy 5 man defence and hope I hold my nerve.

Tried to play 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 as much as I could this year (although 4-4-2 ended up being most common).

Could be 30% plus of my budget, depends how many premium mids I want really.

How much will a back 5 of TAA, Doherty, Laporte, Digne, 4.0 likely cost?

Between him and Laporte for me.

Determined to have Trent and Digne regardless of their prices.

May actually consider 442 most weeks as cheap mids weren't as good value as their similarly priced defenders.

His real life form was a bit ho-hum this season. The signs were there when he missed the fa cup quarter - irritatingly I missed his haul on 32FH as I thought he’d miss that one too.

                                          Agreed

I’m not sure if these stats are available or not but judging from conversations on here Doh was benched an awful lot this season - doesn’t feel like team of the year material.

My feeling is people got fond of him as much for what he added to tv as actual returns. That became a trap when they would quite possibly have done better cashing in and investing 0.5 elsewhere.

I’m referring to fantasy benching. My memory is that on here he fairly frequently featured in who should I bench conversations.

No idea how often he was actually benched but his returns over the middle two thirds of the season should have made him a prime candidate for benching.

Different positions I know but there was or should have been title temptation to bench Jim who was not only good value but kept pace with premium strikers right up until the run in - the model of consistency

Combination of things, think his price and play deserved an inclusion on the basis of fpl. Vvd did great, flew under the radar with his points total for me. Couldn't argue if he was included but also, don't think taa, Robertson, laporte, Doherty is wildly off the mark for an fpl team of the year.

Did Doherty really only score 66 points in 25 GW’s from 9-34?

He’ll catch a lot of people out next year returning at that rate

on what basis have you decided that's his base return rate?

Depends on your definition of base return rate? If he repeats what he did this year and returns like that for 25 consecutive games he’ll catch a lot of people out

There were points towards the end of the season I kinda regretted not owning. But the article probably put in perspective that for all the good he did owner's, a fair bit of damage was done as I don't remember many shouts to bench him at any point. Anyone got on around the 4.4-4.9 mark probably did ok, any point after would have been a let down imo. His ownership should be interesting, I enjoyed watching him play as much of a pain that was as a non owner.

Wolves fixtures will dictate if he's an option for me

He had some lovely fixtures in that spell though...

GW 13, 28, 29 were beautiful fixtures, two starts and a sub appearance netted him 3 points from those

Price rise + Europa added to his already well demonstrated ability to go for literally months without points put a big question mark over him for me

Yeah, for sure there would have been some great looking fixtures in that run. It's more the case that I don't look at anyone aa set and forget player, more if they can be useful in a 4-5-6 match sequence that I can then flip to someone else. Maybe that stretch and lack of clean sheets might put him in at 5 which makes him a different proposition

Talking of flipping players for 5-6 match runs to me there’s the intriguing possibility of a few players in his bracket next season who could comfortably switch. I’m thinking

                                                        Doh
Digne (possibly up a price bracket)
                                                        Pereira
PvA (slightly surprised at how well he returned)

They won’t all come in at the same price but they should be there or thereabouts. I didn’t really have anyone much in this range last season but I could well next.

I almost certainly won’t go Doh early because of Europa but can see myself switching into him if he’s looking good from one of the others if they look to have a nice fixture run from GW1

I had Doherty for much of last season as well. But at the end of the day he only managed 3.8 pts per match played.
Among defenders in his rough (or lower) price bracket, that was bettered by £5.2 Coleman (4.5), £5.4 Digne (4.4), £5.3 Pereira (4.2), £4.8 Keane (4.0), £4.5 Schar, (3.9), £5.5 Van Aanholt (3.9), and even matched by £4.9 Matip (3.8).
