Learning to stick to my guns in challenging FPL season

When you’re still struggling this far into a Fantasy Premier League season, it can be easy to ask, even now, what went wrong?

I’m currently ranked 910,047 in the world, albeit with 10 players left to play in Gameweek 26.

After a season-high 97,729 rank in Gameweek 3, I haven’t been higher than 506,273 since Gameweek 10.

Even though we’re not at the end of the season yet, and there’s plenty of points to play for, I’ve still been looking back at I could have done differently.

Overthinking

It’s fairly common knowledge that my FPL account was compromised between Gameweek 6 and 7. This resulted in me having to use one of my chips early. I haven’t used that as an excuse, but it is where the overthinking began.

Lundstram benched again as unchanged Sheffield United face Bournemouth

Because John Lundstram (£5.0m) wasn’t £4.0m any more I questioned whether he was still worth a place in my team. I’d have to pay £4.4m, which looking back I have to laugh at how I even questioned it.

He’d even scored 12 points for me the week before. When you see a player like this you buy them, simple. Instead, I looked to try and play the fixtures and looked at defensive rotations that saw me buy Fikayo Tomori (£4.4m) and Issa Diop (£4.4m) instead.

A player listed as a defender, playing in midfield. Genuine attacking threat and clean sheets to boot. In the past there’s no way I’d turn this down, I’m still not sure why I did this year.

Ignoring Form

In Gameweek 23 I wanted a Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) replacement. I need to take money out of my attack to use in defence and looked at both Neal Maupay (£5.8m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.1m).

The Everton man had scored three goals in the previous four matches, Maupay had one assist.

There wasn’t even anything in the underlying statistics to say that Maupay was the better choice either. Below is Gameweek 19 to 22.

andys-article

14 shots in the box versus just two should have been all I needed to tell me who was the better pick.

Instead, I turned to the fixtures. I don’t think that using fixtures as a basis to bring players in is wrong, but I tried looking too long term and ignored the clear difference in form between the two.

Maupay’s next seven – Aston Villa (home), Bournemouth (away), West Ham (away), Watford (home), Sheffield United (away), Crystal Palace (home), Wolves (away)

Calvert-Lewin’s next seven – West Ham (away), Newcastle (home), Watford (away), Crystal Palace (home), Arsenal (away), Man United (home), Chelsea (away)

Although the next seven fixtures at the time were better for Maupay, Calvert-Lewin had a nice short-term run and given the form should have been the obvious choice. While long-term picks are nice it’s clear that a mistake was made here – ignoring form, and also the shorter-term fixtures.

Short Term Transfers

Back in Gameweek 12 I made a fairly big move by taking Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) out as part of an eight-point hit to bring in the in-form Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.7m).

It worked well. Since then Sterling has only hit double figures twice, and has one score of seven outside of that.

This is where tunnel vision kicked in. Because a risky move had worked once it would definitely work again, right?

In Gameweek 18 I wrote an infamous article about why I was taking Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m) out for a hit. I gave it a good bit of thought. He had a blank, Leicester (away), Wolves (home), Sheffield United (home), Tottenham Hotspur (away), and Man United (home) to come.

Not the most ideal fixtures, but I didn’t take into account that I’d almost certainly want him back at some point and mostly ignored the fact that Liverpool were the best team in the league, using their full-backs to attack and also had plenty of clean sheet potential. This was a short-term move that didn’t work out.

Going Forward

I think what I’ve learned from the above is that I’ve ignored my own advice of sticking to your game-plan even if things are going wrong.

I haven’t reacted well to doing badly and have been overthinking, ignoring form and making moves that are too short term at times.

I Wildcarded in Gameweek 26.

andys-article 2

I feel I’ve picked a team that fits in better with how I like to play, and eliminates some of the bad decisions I’ve made above.

No Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m) was a big decision (I owned prior to Wildcarding) and it does feel a little like the Alexander-Arnold call but I feel with Son Heung-min (£10.0m) I’ve made a calculated risk to get a player who I hope can keep up with De Bruyne in the coming weeks at a lower ownership.

Up-front, I’ve picked two players in Jiménez and Roberto Firmino (£9.7m) who have both the form and fixtures. As you can see below both are in the top six forwards over their last four matches for Expected Goal Involvement.

andys-article 3

And while Danny Ings (£7.0m) doesn’t feature there it’s worth noting that he’s played Leicester, Wolves, and Liverpool in the last four fixtures and was rested for most of the match versus Crystal Palace.

I’m expecting him to find form again with the upcoming fixtures.

Conclusion

I think whatever happens from here I’m probably going to have my worst ever finish in FPL.

There’s been some bad luck like the Sadio Mané (£12.2m) Triple Captain in Gameweek 24 but ultimately I’m in this position because of some bad decision-making.

My only hope is that it will allow me to remember how I like to play FPL and what has worked best in the past.

I’m inspired when I see people like Lateriser who make big decisions like betting against Jamie Vardy when the crowd isn’t necessarily thinking the same way, but that’s not how I play the game and I think I need to stick to what I know.

O’Con if can still put a full team out in BGW, though I picked Egan over him because historically more attacking threat.

    Morning,

Silly question but if the city vs West ham is scheduled for Monday I would assume it would still be counted as gw26 as there is a game on Monday already?

Fair play on the honesty in the article. Top 100k still possible, just aim for that.

"but that’s not how I play the game and I think I need to stick to what I know."

    - dont agree with this at all. Surely when having your worst season ever, its the perfect opportunity to have fun, be maverick, F the template and take risks. Play differently than you ever have before, even for just 13 GWs.

      I agree with this.
I was "cruising" along at 250k then the World Club thing came along.
Took out TAA to finance Son with the view to bringing back TAA for the Wolves game. Son (c) sent off, TAA haul against Leicester etc.
Ok Utd were poor at Watford until Pogba came on so I thought nice differential replacement for Son for Utd vs Newcastle. Triggered a load of choices on 3rd mids that looked good on paper but didn't work out.

Plummeted to 970k by New Year. Since then dragged it back to 620k which is only 24 pts ahead of Andy. i.e. 1 good GW.

Point gaps are still tight. I'm "only" 76 pts of 100k. Or an average of 5 pts per remaining GWs to claw back.
So I still think I can keep my streak of 8 consecutive top 1% finishes going.

A lot of good differential options out there until a new template is formed. Now's a good time to attack as one template seems to be breaking up a bit.

Gutsy article. As the prizes are poor, you've got to play to enjoy the game imo. This enjoyment can come from that warm fuzzy feeling looking at your team nicely set for next week. I play conservatively to mitigate the horrors such as not having Kun for monster hauls a few years back. Trent, Mo and Kdb are great set and forget players to have and by no coincidence are in the top 5 players in the league.

Manchester City and West Ham held talks with the Premier League on Monday and it is likely that the postponed game (due to storm Ciara) will be rescheduled for next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Heard on the radio this morning that the PL are going to announce the new date for City v West Ham today.
Sounds like it could well be next week.

  10. StoichkovFPL

Nice article Andy. You made some mistakes like we all do so its normal and no reason to feel bad now. With the data we have now its so easy to say that "this decison was stupid" or "it was so obvious". We cant see the future so no one could predict Mane injury etc. Also logic isnt always helping when we play FPL as many situations arent logic - that's how it works.
But for me your (only) mistake was playing against yourselfe by making decisions that normally you wouldnt make. For me most important thing is playing your own game the way as you like and you planned. Only that way you can say "ok, this didnt work but it was my idea/plan". Nothing worse than overthinking or listen to others and make a move you feel is wrong.

This season I plan my own game, make my own decisions, sticking to the plan and beleieve in my picks, ideas, observations etc. I also reah/listen to others but final idea/move is my own decision. Thanks to that I really enjoy this season. I make most obvious moves which looks best for me and not changing them by hours of overtinhinking. I obv make mistakes but I dont feel bad about it. Im 19k and most of decisions I made was correct which helps obviously. My biggest problem in previous seasons was overthinking and changing oryginal plan which most of the time was bad for my rank.

My advice - make your own decisions, always stick to the plan if you have one (if not - make one) and you will feel good playing FPL again...dont think - feel.

If a less owned player scores the same amount of points as a highly owned player, does it matter? Points are points. The more points you score the better you do.

I'm trying to understand the logic of highly owned vs low ownership.

    1. StoichkovFPL
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 2 months ago

Most of the time high own players are good (thats why many owns them) so they get points often. If you dont own them when they score your rank goes down.
Low owned players are low owned because they score less points.
You bet that high own player dont score AND your low owned one score - gambling and risky. Can give big red or big green.

IF they both score in a GW than its fine and like you said, it doesnt matter.

    2. Holmes
      • 10 Years

You play the percentage and hope/expect your low ownership player to outscore high ownership player.

As you said, this obviously wont matter if they score same. This is considered as calculated risk.

      1. pavlev
        • 13 Years

you're not playing the percentages: when you differentiate from a template (assuming perfect information, ie the template is "right") then your expected rank will go down. however the point is you have a specific target in mind and if you are out of the money, then you're more likely to get there by increasing the volatiliyt of your rank even if your expected rank falls. in english, you don't care about a (relatively likely) drop from 500k to 600k, you care about a (relatively unlikely) increase from 500k to 300k.

Err I don’t agree with you. If a low owned player scores points, it is much more beneficial to your rank than if a highly owned player scores points, especially if the latter has over 100% EO, which would actually hurt your rank.

      1. mad_beer ✅
        • 9 Years

If they both score the same amount, the ownership won't matter.

          • 12 Years

Again, I don’t agree. If you have two players who both score 20 points, one of which is low owned and the other highly, that is much better for your rank than if both score 2 points. Yes we play for points, but this game is more about your rank. I’d much rather get a score of 50 in a given GW where that ranks inside the 100k GW rank than a score of 80 where that’s just inside the 1M GW rank.

Also, you’re failing to take into account EO. If someone has more than 100% EO and you don’t captain him, you’re losing rank every time they score a point.

      2. StoichkovFPL

What?? So for example if I have high owned player who score 10 points and my team have for eg. 80 pts overall in that GW my rank will be better than in a situation when in place of that high owned player some low owned one would score me that 10 pts to get my team same 80 pts? 🙂

If you own a high ownership player who does well then all your co-owners will get the same hike. If, on the other other hand, your low ownership player does well and the the other managers who do not have a compensatory high scorer then you could leapfrog many of them .
Of course the bottom line is your total score - if it's better than those around you then you will go up the rankings.

lets say u captain someone like calvert lewin or deeney and they score a brace. And popular captains like salah, mane, kun, vardy blank or get max 6 pts. Ur rank will skyrocket.

If you have two players. One at 50%, one at 0.5% ownership and both do very well, you jump more spots than if you have two at 50%.

Whilst, yes, points are points, highly owned players that you don’t own and do well, hit your rank more.

Low owned players don’t relegate you if they do poorly, but do jump you if they perform well.

Yes and City will again this season several times. My point is this is City’s biggest game of the season so if they have a choice not to play 2 games prior in the same week as it, they will take it. Player’s holidays is a factor but also a convenient excuse.

If it happens - which I doubt it - there will be massive rotation in that game.

Why else pay them that much? Fatigue is a factor of course but what is proposed after the break they should be able to handle it.

I’m not saying they can’t handle it but City will have to be at their best to beat Madrid, it’s clearly a big factor.

    1) Vardy + Maddison (nor AVL wat BHA eve CRY)

Seems Man City have proposed the 19th

The EPL will do whatever a team with money wants so they'll agree it

All down to West Ham/Moyes I guess....

Or possibly Arsenal/Arteta as that game could conceivably be played on the 19th to easy the City fixture congestion.

Not sure where he's sourcing it from but Whetstone (Claret & Hugh writer, supposed WH 'in the know' type) states:

"The Hammers and the Premier League are considering the date proposed by Manchester City which falls within the Premier League winter break period."

Their website is generally clickbait nonsense but they do get thrown the odd bit of info from Sullivan occasionally....

Great article Andy - very honest. I think this season has been a train wreck for many 'veterans', and whilst a lot of regular players are displaying their frustrations via anger, patronising others etc it's refreshing to see an article like this. There's still enough time to turn things around and DGWs etc to capitalise on.

This looks like really funny rollercoster:

    - people get Kun for WHU (non owners scared)
    - people say rotation (owners scared)
    - tweets about game being postponed (owners mad)...in women football (non owners still scared but have hope)
    - game being postponed (owners mad, non owners laughing)
    - talks about possible dates of that game (non owners say GW 27 or later, owners hope for GW26)
    Now imagine:
    - game in GW 26 (non owners scared)
    - Kun benched (non owners laughing)
    - Kun come one for a brace (owners laughing)

    1. Gudjohnsen
      • 7 Years

        So it could be like:
        - Hayden 10pts off the bench (Kun owners happy)
        - game to take place in GW26 (Kun owners not that happy)
        - Kun not in team sheet 🙂

V unlucky. Before this season began, I intended to try and stick with a team and take no hits. I think it’s paid off quite well, not took one hit (so far!) this season. I would consider I have made about 3 schoolboy errors and now sit 12k, was 3k at one stage 2 was ago. Still lots to play for yet, just don’t panic.
