Fixtures

What the FA Cup fifth round results will mean for the Blank Gameweek 31 picture

The schedule for Blank Gameweek 31 will be determined by the results of the FA Cup fifth round this week.

The quarter-finals of that competition clash with the Premier League’s final set of fixtures before the March international break, so any top-flight club progressing to the last eight of the FA Cup will blank in FPL.

Ahead of this week’s cup ties, we had only two Premier League fixtures definitely going ahead in Blank Gameweek 31:

Burnley v Watford
Wolverhampton Wanderers
v Bournemouth

One of Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United or Norwich City v Everton will definitely go ahead in Gameweek 31, as Jose Mourinho and Daniel Farke’s sides meet each other in the FA Cup on Wednesday and one of those two clubs will be eliminated.

The ties in the FA Cup fifth round are as follows:

Monday 2nd March

Portsmouth v Arsenal

Tuesday 3rd March

Chelsea v Liverpool
Reading v Sheffield United
West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United

Wednesday 4th March

Leicester City v Birmingham City
Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City

Thursday 5th March

Derby County v Manchester United

Therefore, at the time of writing, we can still have anything between two and seven blanks in Gameweek 31.

If Sheffield United see off Reading, then we will know the full fixture list for Gameweek 31 even before Manchester United face Derby County on Thursday.

Blanks will be confirmed in Gameweek 31 if the following events occur:

GW31 Premier League fixtureA blank will happen if the following happens in the FA Cup fifth round:
Spurs v West HamSpurs beat Norwich
Chelsea v Man CityChelsea beat Liverpool or Man City beat Sheff Wed
Man Utd v Sheff UtdMan Utd beat Derby or Sheff Utd beat Reading
Newcastle v Aston VillaNewcastle beat West Brom
Norwich v EvertonNorwich beat Spurs
Liverpool v Crystal PalaceLiverpool beat Chelsea
Leicester v BrightonLeicester beat Birmingham
Southampton v ArsenalArsenal beat Portsmouth

The maximum of seven blanks will happen in Gameweek 31 if Manchester City, Leicester, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle all win their FA Cup fifth-round ties and at least one of Manchester United or Sheffield United also progress.

Looking further ahead to Gameweek 34, which clashes with the FA Cup semi-finals, there are again only two Premier League matches currently confirmed as going ahead:

Everton v Southampton
West Ham United
v Burnley

The results of the FA Cup fifth round and quarter-finals will determine which of the other scheduled Premier League games will survive.

There’ll be fewer blanks in Gameweek 34 (a maximum of four) and, given that there is a free midweek after that set of fixtures, it is widely assumed that 2019/20’s first ‘big’ Double Gameweek will fall then, with outstanding fixtures from Gameweek 28/31/34 needing to be rearranged.

As many as eight scheduled Gameweek 34 fixtures could be confirmed as going ahead this week, although that would require a succession of cup shocks.

More details of the prospective blanks and doubles can be read below:

Both Jimenez and Traore are heavily owned by live managers, Jota still on 6% and that 30% ownership of Jimenez is also a lot of dead teams. Adding that Traore is owned by 20% and he was not owned by dead teams, so would suspect a lot have double up with those two and then one defender also popular. People, like me, find themselves with Traore and Ings probably wished they had gone Jota and someone else in midfield. With Ings having 2 very good fixtures i will keep and if selling it would be DCL in 31, if he plays which i think is very likely. I would rather have DCl than Ricarlison cause of price and i rather want him than Jota as i think Everton could be very good from 31 and onwards. No cups and could be fighting for europe.

Time to target urgency as a key factor in form swings in FPL. Bottom sides chasing currently on top, followed by top 4 contenders behind LIV, CITY and arguably LEI.

For Norwich and AV it's very relevant at this moment. Also BOU, West Ham and Watford have the urgency. The difference is that Norwich is a lot more 'fragile' - that urgency will turn to lethargy if they fail gaining momentum in the next three.

        1. Citizenkane91
          • 9 Years

The other teams have a slightly bigger 'buffer' before that motivational incentive turns into a disadvantage.

  18. Citizenkane91
    • 9 Years
    4 years, 2 months ago

Similarly, teams too comfortable in the middle of the table will tend to underperform, given fixture ratings based on seasonal performance until this point. They don't have fire closing in on their trail to run from, nor a rainbow to chase for gold.

    1. Greek Freak
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 2 months ago

Are there comfortable teams? Everyone from Everton up is fighting for European football, everyone from Brighton down is fighting relegation. This leaves Southampton and Newcastle, who are only 2 good/bad results away from being in Europe/relegation contention!

      1. Citizenkane91
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

You are never "comfortable" in absolute terms in competition, but relatively to the teams already fighting relegation, I'd say yes.

Good point, though. There's of course nuances to this, more motivational factors to consider, etc. But, this will be on my mind a lot in planning.

    R.Perreira --> Doherty (free transfer)

    A) Good shout. Great fixture. Doherty more chance of assisting/scoring.

    B) You're a fool. Waste of a transfer. Perreira big points potential v Villa

As an early owner of Doherty multiple times this season, I have to say B, AS much as I love his attacking threat.

LEI have Ndidi back to shield their defense, takes a lot of work off their center backs and allows Pereira a generally higher positioning.

In isolation, you will probably get more value out of 2 FTs next GW.

Would be interested in Vardy and Ings to Auba and Jota -4?

Don't get the Auba love at all with the alternatives.

A pre-season study was done on how well the price of mids, strikers, defs and GKs predicted actual FPL points.
In short, premium prices were most predictive of returns for miss and attacking defs (closely followed by set piece/duel defs). Strikers had the lowest prediction. This season, the value is even more so in the mid price bracket.

Auba has unsustainable productivity numbers behind his FPL points, btw. That's not a good sign, given he isn't exactly smashing it as it is.

I've owned him in plenty of FPL seasons, watched him since Dortmund. Never been more doubtful of him as a player (FPL and otherwise).

Yet he keeps producing above average numbers. Look at his EPL career points per minute. Its outstanding.

Very much aware of his numbers, stats and qualitative metrics.

But unlike in FPL draft, there is a price tag that comes along. And even before that price tag is a factor, he's arguably going to be outscored by a at least three strikers in the 6-8 million category.

Iheanacho ( don’t ask- seemed a good idea at 6.58 last Friday!) to

    A Jota
    B DCL

Other strikers are Jiménez and Ings. Whichever of A or B don’t get probably in for Ings following week

Oh dear, taking hits to ship out Vardy versus Villa when Ndidi is back, can only end in bumps in the wall, bruised fists and the taste of salt tears.

Beware of the bandwagon - few players haul consecutively.

Vardy is due (and are Villa still downbeat from losing a final?)

Vardy has been due for a loooong time. Don't fall into the gamblers' trap of sticking with him just because you've invested so much time in him. There's better options out there.

Liverpool 4 wins to win the title.

At what GW did Arsenal claim the title in the Invincibles season?

What's your defensive slots and striker slots currently? Depends on your constellation.

Objectively, I've preferred Jimenez, Doherty, Jota this season, in that order.

    B. Kun+Torssard -> Auba+Sarr for -4
