What to expect from Fulham manager Scott Parker in FPL

Fulham have made a swift return to the Premier League, bouncing back to the top tier of English football after just one year away.

The Cottagers went up after defeating Brentford in the Championship play-off final at the beginning of August and join Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion as the three newly promoted sides in the top flight next season.

What can Fantasy managers expect from Parker and the Cottagers in 2020/21, then?

Our three-part series on Fulham will feature an in-depth examination of their defence and attack but we begin with a closer look at the man in the dugout.

To aid our analysis, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout frequenter, Fulham fan and co-host of the excellent Always Cheating podcast, Brandon Kelley.

WHAT IS PARKER’S BACKGROUND?

Parker has plenty of top-flight experience from his playing days, with stints of various length at Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham.

The ex-England international called time on his on-the-field career at the age of 36 in 2017, subsequently returning to Spurs to coach their under-18 side.

Moving back to west London in 2018, Parker served as a first-team coach to both Slavisa Jokanovic and Claudio Ranieri in their spells in the Fulham hot seat before taking temporary charge himself when Ranieri was fired in February 2019.

Some improved displays and three successive wins in April weren’t enough to keep the Cottagers up but they were enough to convince owner Shahid Khan to name Parker permanent boss, with the retired midfielder signing a two-year deal.

His first full season as a manager was a successful one, with the west London side never out of the top half from the Championship equivalent of Gameweek 2 onwards.

The Cottagers indeed held a play-off place from late-November right the way through to the end of the season before sealing promotion at Wembley.

WHAT STYLE OF FOOTBALL DOES PARKER USE?

Parker’s preferred tactics, at least in terms of basic formation, are similar to those of Slaven Bilic.

A 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 were Fulham’s most-used set-ups in 2019/20, which were systems the West Bromwich Albion manager turned to in the Baggies’ promotion-winning campaign.

Brandon Kelley explains:

Parker frequently played a 4-2-3-1 last season, with Mitro as the lone striker and Harrison Reed and Tom Cairney as a midfield pivot. On occasion, Josh Onomah would push up to play off of Mitrovic for a 4-2-2-2.

You’ll see a fair amount of overlapping with the full-backs and wide-midfielders, but it has to be said that Fulham haven’t been a particularly fast side since the departure of Ryan Sessegnon. They will struggle to beat many Premier League clubs for pace.

For Parker, it’s all about one thing: possession.

The Cottagers were ball-hoggers extraordinaire last season, registering more passes and short passes than any other club in the English second tier.

Their passing success rate of 83.2% was the best in the Championship and was beaten by just the top four and Arsenal among Premier League sides last season.

Only Leeds averaged more possession than Fulham (58.3%) in the second division of English football last season.

From an FPL (and Sky) perspective, that’s a good thing when it comes to bonus points – although retaining the ball in the Premier League will be a much stiffer test.

Some cynics have suggested that Parker’s crab-like qualities as a player are now apparent in his Fulham team, with there being a lot of passing for passing’s sake and not much penetration at the end of their slow build-up play.

It seems an odd slur given that that they boast the league’s top goalscorer in Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) but the criticism is not completely unfounded, with the Cottagers, despite being ranked first for passes, a lot further back when we assess other attacking metrics.

Rank v other Championship clubs
Passes1st
Goals scored7th
Shots5th
Shots in the box11th=

Despite the safety-first approach, they did concede on more occasions (48) than Leeds, West Brom and Brentford.

The Cottagers did beat all bar the champions of those teams for clean sheets (17), at least.

If there is one thing that Parker is unquestionably good at, it’s man-management.

The emotional scenes at the end of the win over Brentford were a testament to that, with play-off hero Joe Bryan saying of his head coach:

He’s very good at motivational talking. When he talks, everyone respects it – he’s been there and done it. It’s good to play for a manager you know is speaking from personal experience of being a player.

Always Cheating’s Brandon Kelley indeed told us:

Fulham suffered a number of key injuries throughout the season, perhaps most notably losing Mitrovic for their play-off run.

As a result, Parker has been forced to get more from his second-choice players, and Onomah’s impact at the end of Fulham’s play-off run is a true testament to Parker’s ability to adapt and motivate.

Parker will face a number of different challenges in his first full season in the Premier League, so I suspect he’ll be flexible throughout, especially given he’s too young in his managerial career to be stuck in his ways.

DOES PARKER LIKE A SETTLED SIDE OR WILL HE ROTATE?

Rotation: the scourge of the Fantasy manager.

The likes of Pep Guardiola and Graham Potter make life a nightmare for FPL bosses and team news writers alike and many of us long for a top flight full of Sean Dyches.

The attacking midfield and wide positions look particularly at risk for Fulham, with Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m), Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.5m) and Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m) having made 28 substitute appearances between them.

Always Cheating co-host and Fulham fan Brandon Kelley told us:

Parker will happily rotate but Fulham’s squad won’t be especially deep, so I don’t expect we’ll see rotation among key players like Mitrovic or the entire defensive backline.

It was interesting to see Parker start Denis Odoi at right-back against Brentford in the playoff final, which not many supporters had anticipated, so that does speak to Parker’s desire to pick the right players for the right jobs in the right matches.

On the whole, wide attackers like Knockaert, Reid, and Cavaleiro will be most prone to rotation.

HOW DOES PARKER HANDLE THE PRESS?

A likeable character, Parker gives off the air of an honest sort in his post and pre-match interviews.

Those are the types of managers we Fantasy managers love, of course, especially when it comes to team news.

Always Cheating’s Brandon Kelley echoed those sentiments, although did cite a cautionary tale from the play-offs:

The press adores Scott Parker for many reasons: he’s handsome, he’s well-dressed, he’s humble, he’s English, and he’s generally pretty open and honest at pressers.

Just watch this interview given after the 2-1 Brentford win for a sense of how utterly wholesome he can be.

I believe Parker to be fairly forthcoming. But, you could point to his handling of the press with Mitrovic’s injury during the EFL play-offs as an example of him being less so. I believe that was a special circumstance, though, and don’t expect to see much of that this coming season.

WHERE MIGHT PARKER STRENGTHEN IN THE SUMMER AND WHICH PLAYERS ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING THEIR PLACE?

Fulham likely won’t make the same mistakes they did two years ago when they spent big on overpriced players ahead of their top-flight return.

Some level of investment will be needed, however, with a right-back and some attacking midfielders potentially on Parker’s shopping list according to our Fulham correspondent, Brandon Kelley:

Fulham desperately need a right-back as Cyrus Christie won’t be able to handle that position in the top flight. Wild rumours had linked 36-year-old Branislav Ivanovic to Fulham, perhaps looking for some experience to settle the backline (and join Mitrovic in some Serbian hijinks, no doubt), but after the disastrous signing of Andre Schurrle in 2018, I really hope Fulham will think twice before buying another Chelsea retiree.

Harrison Reed really impressed as a defensive midfielder on loan from Southampton. With Reed in front of the defence, Fulham appeared much more stable and found it easier to link with their attacking players. If that chemistry with Reed was as evident to Scott Parker as it was to every Fulham supporter, then the club will be desperate to buy him permanently off of his parent club.

In the attack, Fulham could use a bit more Premier League experience just behind Mitrovic. Some rumours have linked Ryan Fraser to the club, and I think it’s correct that Parker will be looking for some speed that will be able to break defensive lines and feed balls into the centre-forward.

Bobby Reid, Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro are all players who I would expect to sit on the bench if the right signings are made. Lesser-known players like Onomah and Kebano have at least proven they can adapt to Scott Parker’s tactics and play key roles in key moments, so they may stand a better chance of featuring throughout the coming season.

And if you’re expecting more spot-kick drama with Aboubaker Kamara, don’t hold your breath – he will become surplus to requirements.

Our huge thanks again go to Brandon for his time and insight. Keep your eyes peeled for two more Fulham articles in The Promoted series, which will be landing soon.

(Leeds fan) I would hold fire on Dallas until we see what Marcelo intends to do at LB. He likes Douglas but he has fitness issues and they're in the market in that area. Ayling would be the better choice of the two to start as he's guaranteed to play. Dallas will get in the team, but I'm interested to see where he fits in at first.

Oh and the rest looks ok.

I’d downgrade Doherty to Vinagre and upgrade one of Soucek or Antonio.

Also I think Mitchell is more likely to get starts compared to Ferguson (hasn’t played since January).

The Ferguson Mitchell thing may be a matter of time frame. If you’re looking for a long hold Ferguson could be the better choice but that means having him 3rd bench early on perhaps

Yes but with Mitchell at least you’d be getting nearly certain starts at the beginning until Van Aanholy is back whereas with Ferguson you most likely will not gonna get starts at the beginning followed by a period of uncertainty. Is it for sure that he will get into the team right away as soon as he is match-fit?

Agreed - it wouldn’t really surprise if Ferguson only happened mid late season.

The current ownership of both is back to front imo - refelects this sites influence. Joe mentions him and people get him because people get him more people get him.

Palace will play Ferguson as palace were suppose to sign him for £9mill but pulled out due to him ‘failing’ a medical and then signed him In the summer for free so it was a bit of a dodgy deal. Palace and Ferguson wouldn’t have done all that without some sort of promise of starting for Ferguson

              1. Ferguson hasn't played for over 6 months
              2. He will have been with the club for 3 weeks when season starts with minimal preseason
              3. He has never played at this level
              4. Roy is very keen on defensive organisation - that'll take more than a couple of very friendly friendlies and the odd training session
              5. The failed medical was a long term injury with surgery - nothing dodgy

Yes he is likely to get in at some point but week 1 is a reach. Very possibly he'll wait until Ward gets his inevitable injury. Guaita who was a leading keeper in the top division in Spain was kept waiting for almost half a season behind Hennessey.

I didn’t say Palace won’t play Ferguson. What I mean is it is very unlikely to be straight away for the reasons mentioned by Pingissimus mentioned below.

Personally I would opt for Puli instead of Ziyech.
Also, I love Doherty and had him almost all the time in last two seasons but would shift for Vinagre this one and use extra funds to try fit Werner in.

    B) Son + Ziyech (451)

The whole point of FPL for most people is entering leagues to compete against others. It is absolutely stupid to then forbid people from deciding to put money on the line in that league. It is their own personal decision surely

Most people are perfectly happy competing against one another without having money at stake.

There are plenty of bookmakers if you want to put money on football results.

You’re suggesting betting on individual matches and outcomes with a bookmaker giving odds is a comparable alternative to paying a one off entry fee in a skill based competition between friends. It’s not.

                      Skill-based is a bit pushing it 😀

Also betting your best friend a fiver over who gets more points (which I don't do anyway) is not the same as paying money to a stranger to enter a mini-league.

They aren’t, at least not intentionally (3rd parties facilitate it using their platform as a basis) but it doesn’t mean they might not get investigated about it if a case was to be opened up.

I, and I suspect FPL, think it should be up to everyone not to be arses and not to get duped either, but thats a society culture discussion really.

You can understand why theyve done it. They dont need the bad rep so are taking some responsibility.

I can see why but I also feel like it would be massively shooting themselves in the foot to start banning people because of it, considering a massive % of their customer base are partaking in such leagues

I don't know about that. If you're referring to Alexander Antonov, there's nothing to say that the PL/FPL searched for anything; the evidence was presented to them by an individual. The Premier League is hardly the NSA.

    GK. 2x 4.5 rotating or 4/5
    DEF. TAA and 4x 4.5s
MID. Salah. KDB. Son. Pulisic. Greenwood.
    FWD. Mito. Antonio. 4.5 bench

depends on the lineup. if auba plays up front and willian pepe/saka play as wingers, his points will increase imo.

If anything it could increase them, apparently willian is set to start in a more central role to supply the attackers as Arsenal have nothing since ozil was frozen.

If that's the case he should in theory have more opportunities as Willian is a lot more creative than most people think.

Here's another Doherty-related price quirk: for 6.0, you can get Doherty and around 160-200 points over a season. Or, for 0.5 more, you can get Lallana!

Also for the same price as Doherty, you can get Joelinton, Batshuayi or Samatta.

    Best 4.5m keeper?

According to last year's xGC data post lockdown, it should be Heaton... Villa's defense were the best out of all the 4.5m keeper options. Villa and Southampton had the best defense.

Maybe we should be looking at Heaton - Nyland combo to cover another Heaton injury?

      Heaton/Nyland is my current plan.

      Good keeper. Poor side.
      Save points. Tick
      Few cleanies. Tick
      4.5 Tick
      4.0 backup tick.

Only risk is when they blank/get cancelled for COVID.

    Under the radar?

They're the second and third best semi-premium mids for value (8.0 and up) on season value. Were plenty popular at the end of last season and returned just under and just over 170 points. Decent price point too if you need Greenwood switch.

The only mids better than both for value are

    KDB - of course

Lund Westwood Grealish Henderson Noble Rice

Answer comes from checking season value for mids on main FPL site 🙂

        Mahrez and Willian

Easy to see why they're being almost universally ignored but with Mahrez anyway there's a case for just leaving him in there for when he does play and there's a good fixture run. Decent first bench enablers are there.

          Willian won’t have pens

Are people expecting a bit too much from the wolves defence? They have had an extremely long season with little rotation due to squad size. They might really struggle to begin with.

Over the season they should be good as they won’t have Europa League this year.

Armstrong at Southampton looks a reasonable option at the price. Why, over the last two seasons, has only played half the time?

Last season, he played about 1,700 mins out of 3,420. Was he injured at all? Or is he not nailed?

FYI, he scored 98 points at half mins, if he played 3,000 this season, and kept close to his score rate, he’s be a bargain

Mix of rotation and injury and not starting first half of season.

Personally don't like to see gambling cross over into FPL, but respect people make their own choices regardless.

I love LR's mindset of "attacking the GW" and freeing yourself from the shackles of value.

It takes skill to do that for sure. Timing is perhaps the most important element of it.

I think its more nuanced. You cant attack the gameweek from every position. I'm planning to have high rotation in midfield with short term planning, coupled with longer term purches in defence and attack.

What I really want is a list of the players capable of hauling. No point attacking the gameweek by purchasing Jonjo Shelvey.

Yeah, it's about attacking the GW with the explosive players. The 9.0m+ players really...

Has anyone worked out Auba’s points last season if he was a mid?

237, his current 205 plus 22 for the extra mid goal pt and then 10 for clean sheets.

Not sure if bonuses work differently for player positions.

This, plus minus 7 bonus points = 230.

He doesn't actually compare as favourably to other premium mids on pts per game though as I expected.

My first draft doesn't include any Man United players due to the high chance they are gonna miss the GW1 (GW2 too if they advance to the final?) but I have trouble fitting any of them in the team anyways. It's a long time till the deadline and lot may change but for now I can't see a way to get any of Martial, Fernandes or Rashford. I'm quite not sure if it is a right attitude due to their high ownership though.

I may somehow stretch to have Fernandes in my team as he could be the biggest rank killer if United get couple of pens at the start of the season, but I don't think he could be a captain option if having a Man City asset (KDB or Raheem) and Salah, and that price is quite high for a player that I would rarely captain (fixture dependant really, as I say a lot can change).

Instead of Rashford I would prefer Pulisic who could be a great value at 8.5. All the Chelsea players seem to be undervalued frankly speaking and that's where I believe the value could lie. I probably won't have Ziyech at the start of the season due to doubts over his position on the pitch and how he settles in the new team but at 8.0 he can potentially be a steal later in the season. The same applies to Werner and I still debate whether to pick him or Martial but Timo seems to have enormous potential FPL points wise this season in that attacking Chelsea side. I'm only slightly worried about whether he won't play at the left wing (maybe that would even be better?) and his minutes. I can see him being substituted at 60min for Tammy. But with 28 goals in 34 games in Bundesliga and 0.75 xG per game he's hard to ignore really. Even at 9.0 and reclassified to striker, in my opinion Martial is still a good option though. Probably safer that Werner too. If he plays all the games (I also think there is a room for a lot of improvement) I think he can even get 25 goals a season (bear in mind I've always been a huge admirer of his talent though...) I would need to calculate whether it would be a good value but I'm pretty sure it would. The team structure probably only allows for one of them and so far with both of them at around 30% ownership it could be a lot to gain or a lot to lose if one of them starts well and the second not.
    Choices, choices...

Your thoughts? How many United assets are you planning to have when they start the season?

At least one, maybe two if Greenwood is an option.

Cant make a legitimate draft until the fixtures are out and we know about blanks etc, but based on price points I currently have room for 9.5 and 7.5 mids, which at the minute are Rashford and Greenwood. Again, just price points though, not an actual draft.
