Vinagre to offer FPL value in 2020/21 following Jonny’s long-term injury

Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) could prove to be one of the most effective budget defenders in Fantasy Premier League this season.

The 21-year-old defender looks certain to fill the gap left in the Wolves team by a long-term injury to Jonny Otto (£5.5m).

The Spaniard is unlikely to feature for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men for an extended period following an operation on his damaged anterior cruciate ligament, injured against Olympiakos earlier this month.

Preliminary estimates indicate that Jonny may not play until 2021, which could unlock Vinagre’s FPL potential as a set-and-forget budget option.

After two years as an understudy on the left-hand side of Wolves’ wing-back system, Vinagre finally has a chance to string together consistent starts in 2020/21. That could see him surpass his 24 and 32-point total scores from the two previous campaigns by a considerable margin.

In fact, Vinagre may even act as a powerful differential in the early weeks of the campaign provided we don’t see massive ownership shifts between now and Gameweek 1. The left wing-back currently sits in 11.7% of Fantasy teams, roughly half the ownership of Matt Doherty (£6.0m).

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), owned by 56%, is currently the only more fashionable defender than the Republic of Ireland international and the heavy backing for Wolves’ right wing-back could see Vinagre slip under the radar for those outside the hardcore Fantasy community.

This article serves to bring the Wolves youngster into the light, examining what he produced in fleeting appearances during 2019/20 using some key underlying statistics.

As this article uses Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

Are Wolves defenders worth owning for 2020/21?

Ayling is EFL Championship's player of the year.
    He is a 4.5 Def.

Is vinagre really a great, bargain purchase when compared to other 4.5 Burnley Def.

    Coady 118pts, 38g = 3.10 ppg
    Saiss 103pt, 33g = 3.12 ppg
    Jonny 123pt, 35g = 3.5 ppg
    Boly 97pt, 22g = 4.1ppg

    Bardsley 78pts, 21g = 3.71 ppg
    Taylor 84pts, 24g = 3.5 ppg
    Pieter's 77pts, 24g = 3.2 ppg
    Lowton 48pts, 17g = 2.82

This is just a basic stats analysis and I'm sure others who really like that sort of thing can delve deeper and help give some sort of correct context.

My basic point is that although vinagre seems a great FPL asset, is he as good\amazing as it seems? If Burnley players can get regular starts they can maybe match the points for wolves?

Gotta take into account the games that Boly was injured for though and how much their defence improved when he came back but having said that, it'll be interesting to see if Vinagre can match Jonny's defensive contribution.

I can't see a team with top six ambitions, like Wolves, heading into the season with one recognised left-back, so I'd be surprised if Vinagre remains an option. Ch Taylor I like a lot.

I like how predictable C.Taylor and Burnley’s clean sheets tend to be. Easy to rotate in and out unlike a set and forget Pope but without the saves and bonus.

I'll probably transfer between the 2 depending on fixtures as I'm going with 5 at the back. Taa, Rob, vvd and doh plus Taylor and or vinagre, or whoever else looks good that week

If someone owns Doherty then he should go for Burnley def for sure and not double up.
I think we will probably ignore Vinagre with Wolves looking to sign a first team quality LB in the coming days.

I just think because Vinagre with Burnley def won't have that big difference in PTS. Double wolves and ignoring Burnley Def is more risky.
But if the fixtures of Wolves are very very better than Burnley's then you can go double wolves no problem mate.

There is one spot in my team that's waiting for the fixture list: Wolves and Burnley, affecting three players: Taylor, Soucek and Vinagre

If Wolves start out more favourably, I'm getting Vinagre and always starting him due to his higher attack threat than Taylor, with Soucek first sub (I'll ignore all his goals and have him come in for emergencies or Vinagre's worst games)

If Burnley have the more favourable fixtures, I'm getting Taylor for his predictable clean sheets and benching him for Soucek whenever he faces the top 8 because I don't expect attacking returns from him in his tougher games

Doherty stays in my team except if, and only if, Wolves start off with like *5 or 6 top 8 games in their first 10 GWs, which is possible

I don't care about Soucek's fixtures, as his goals come in basically any game, with no real pattern

Burnley would need to repeat their defensive stats from last season and remember, Wolves with Boly are surely a top tier defence. I think if Vinagre starts as full back, you cant overlook him - yet to have both Taylor and Vinagre is the way to go imo.

    Bottomed.

    Guys

One more point to mention in regards to my previous post.

Don't you think that recent reclassification and logic for positioing (Auba, Rashford etc.) make giving 3 spots to forwards too much? In fact, So many positions to be classified as MF (DMF, CMF, R/LMF, AMF, now wingers) and only lone forwards and second strikers are classified as FWs. We assume that other than Everton there is 1 FW is general formation of most clubs. This gives as 10% space for FWs in real life (GKs aside). And what happens in FPL? 3 from 13, more than 23%!

I think FPL should adress this and give one forward slot to MF (6 MFs, 2 FWs) with option to have 3-6-1.

    Your thoughts, please.

Think it comes down to Dallas vs Ayling - saw a good write up by a Leeds fan FPL account ton twitter. Think I marginally preferred Dallas from what I read but Ayling probably more nailed as a CB whereas Dallas started in multiple games (45 IIRC) so can’t really say he isn’t nailed.

Who is the team you expect to go against the template and prosper early doors? Excuse the bias but I think it could be Everton. Richarlison in particular is on the brink of a 20 goal season and their defence will be sured up under the Ancelotti watch. I’m expecting the Italian to do some solid business to bolster the midfield during the transfer window. Which other clubs to watch out for.. Southampton and West Ham could challenge the top 8-10 this season also

I foresee very very little movement in the PL this season. As teams finished last season so they will this one, with just minor movement. One side that might move more than 2 places upwards is West Ham, but only if they change their manager. Another one is Arsenal, but still short of Top 4. Wolves should increase their points although it will probably result in moving up just one spot.

Gordon at 4.5 could be a steal. Branthwaite too. Both breaking into the side last season (granted latter was due to injury/suspension at CB). Gordon though - had a few starts ahead of Siggurdsson.

Spurs are going to fly out of the blocks and we're all going to be jumping on them early. The amount of people discounting a Mourinho second season team is absurd, just look at his achievements in all of those seasons. Ended the season in excellent form plus Mourinho tends to start prime seasons very strongly.

I believe their defense will be outstanding this year purely on the brilliance of Mourinho. He's the absolute master of defense and like I said, his second season is always phenomenal. Early prediction is 3rd in PL and winners of EL plus a defense that is up there with Liverpool and City. Their form after the break comes into my thinking too, they mostly only conceded wonder goals/set pieces, which will be improved on, and looked a lot more secure. Plus, Lloris was fantastic. De Gea 16/17 2.0, I expect.

Also the signing of Hojbjerg is one that will transform Spurs. They've lacked a quality DM since 2017, which has resulted in the likes of Sissoko and Winks being forced to play there and hurting their defensive record. His stats are brilliant and Mourinho clearly likes him, so even if the general consensus is pretty meh I will trust him. Anyways, having a capable DM is a massive boon in many ways. Firstly, it helps protect the defense making them more secure. Second, it allows the midfield - Lo Celso and Ndombele/Alli - to focus more on what they do best - breaking the lines and playing killer passes. Thirdly, this has the knock on benefit of finally, finally stopping everyone's favorite 11M CDM from dropping deep and instead letting him focus on staying up, getting in the box and scoring and we saw evidence of this before the break.

I'm not sure they finished the season in excellent form, it was more okay, IMO.

Didn't they draw with Palace and Bournemouth in the last five?

Personally, I'd be surprised if they're anywhere near the top four next season, unless some really good signings are made, but that's just my opinion, of course I may be proved wrong.

      Any thoughts on this.

We all know KDB is a fantastic player and rightfully so was he the top scoring FPL asset for last season. Comparing him against Bruno, however, from GW25 onwards when Bruno played his first game it seems like Bruno comes out on top. Granted he overperformed with an xGI delta of +6.47 vs KDB's +2.81. Bruno will inevitably slow down a bit but he may very well be able to match KDB's output and is less likely to be rested. Would any of you consider going with Bruno instead of KDB if you could only have one of those? Is saving £1.0 worth it given that every man and his dog would have KDB?

If you think Fernandes and the spare 1.0 over de Bruyne will get you more points then do it, who cares what we think.

It’s gonna be fixture dependent initially though. Also, at a similar price point, I envisage you’ll switch around or even own both during various periods.

I think this is why I'm pretty set on having three premium spots in midfield come what may. Incredible options and transferring between the likes of KDB and Bruno sounds torture. So may as well look to try and squeeze in both

I have initially gone with a similar approach as you with Salah, KDB, and Bruno as my 3 premium mid spots. I am trying to squeeze in Werner to partner Jimenez in attack. Will just have to wait and see what the fixtures are like, however, both Bruno and KDB are fixture proof anyway :/

It's certainly possible, KDB had his best season yet and I wouldn't bet on him repeating it, especially if Aguero is still on penalties.

Not helpful I know, but from day 1 long before prices were out, 3 names were inked on my team sheet - TAA, KDB and Bruno. The rest I can chop and change to work towards my optimal squad.

      5. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

There's good reason to go with both and count TAA as your Liverpool captain

That's a reliable (few blanks) Man U cap in Bruno, a reliable (few blanks) City cap in KDB, and a reliable (few blanks) Pool captain in TAA

This is in contrast to spending 4.0m more on your Pool captain, who'll most likely score more individual AND captaincy points than TAA but the 4m upgrades elsewhere count for A LOT

If you trust Sterling, he can replace KDB as a reliable captain, especially if his assists are finally back

Auba is a very, VERY good captain against the lower half of the table, but the 1.5m saving with Penandes and 0.5m saving with City caps do count... Before I bring up TAA again

Hard to see many GWs coming where TAA, KDB and Bruno will be terrible captains. Toss Pulisic/Ziyech/Werner into the mix, and there's a long term plan with 4 reliable (not the most explosive) captains from the some of top scoring teams... And maybe a cheeky Doherty punt here and there... Plus lots of extra funds in the XI

If you want to have the most explosive captain possible in most GWs, you'd need to cram Auba + Sterling + Salah + KDB + Bruno +/- Pulisic +/- Rashford in there somehow, then Kane + Werner + Martial + Agüero up front. This is very possible and works quite well with lateriser's strategy of using transfers on premiums, mind

I might be alone in this, but oh well

      Potentially interesting 5-4-1 combo

      McCarthy

      TAA - VVD - Robertson - Vinagre - Ferguson/Mitchell/Johnson

      Auba - Bruno - KDB - Soucek

      Werner

      Nyland - Bissouma - Brewster - Davis

Obvious "flaws", but could be a decent way to start the season

I like it. Personally, I still would rather go top heavy, but it is not like you have gone light up top either. Biggest problem I see is the lack of bench which would be more important this season than the previous ones. Good team though.

yes, the bench is terrible, but a Brewster loan move and Davis cameos is tolerable I think.

              Not for the bench, no

I'd do Robbo to Doh and shuffle according my with the likes of Greenwood potentially coming in

The only reason the lose a Pool defender would be for more flexibility to obtain (C) Salah or Mane

I like it a lot but it comes with attendant risk, obvs. Here's one that hasn't been mentioned: with a sole striker you have to be damn sure he plays every match. Jimi and Vardy give such security, as does Ings until he gets crocked. With Werner we don't know. He might underwhelm for Frank to start Tammy or Giroud. Do we know if he's made of steel, ie low change of injury? I don't think he's the striker I'd put all my eggs in a basket on at this stage.

It's Werner's price point and potential that's got him shoehorned in there. Had no flexibility to get Aguero early doors last year and then Vardy emerged

Tinkering with a defence like this:

      Pope

      TAA / Gomez / Saiss / Vinagre

      Salah / KDB / Fernandes / Soucek

      Werner / Mitrovic

Come a from thinking how to get an edge from owning TAA, Wolves and Burnlwy defenders, who'll alone highly owner

Double Liverpool and Double Wolves defense. Although not much chance of attacking returns from defense other than TAA

And covers Burnley with their best option. Starting to think the save points and bonus justify the extra 1m, but know I'll likely consider him a cash cow unless he gets a flying start

Thoughts? Too little attacking threat from the defense?

      Pope (4.0)
      TAA Doherty Vinagre (Ayling) (Ferguson)
      KDB Bruno Mane Soucek ASM
      Jimi Antonio (Davis)

Fairly happy. Think Mane is a good differential

No looks balanced to me, nice team 6 Premium Players plus Pope, Tierney and Greenwood.

I'm not sure about Mitty and Soucek as regular starters

Well it’s worth it to start I don’t expect too much from them.. Also fixture dependant

      Ryan - Mccarthy
      TAA - VVD - Laporte - Taylor - Vinagre
      KDB - Son - Greenwood - ASM - Stephens
      Werner - Jiminez - Mitrovic

      Thoughts?

Laporte - City's defence bit shaky? (Doherty instead)
        Ings over Jimi
        Armstrong over ASM
        Son could be a bargain
No Liverpool attack could be risky

Dont agree with Ings over Jimi. With no Europe Jimi could be even better. 17 prem goals last season playing twice most weeks... Flip side of that argument is he'll be knackered and will be average... hmmmm. Not buying the Juve transfer gossip though. I think Ings will have another good season about 15 goals but i'm not so keen for >8m
