Can Aaron Ramsdale prosper in FPL and will he affect Sheffield United’s defence?

There will be a different goalkeeper between the posts for Sheffield United next season.

Dean Henderson (£5.5m) has returned to parent club Manchester United after two years with the Blades and Chris Wilder has moved quickly to replace the departing loanee, snapping up Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) from relegated Bournemouth.

In this Moving Target article, we’ll assess the new shot-stopper’s prospects in Fantasy Premier League ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and whether the changing of the guard will affect Sheffield United’s clean sheet potential.

Ramsdale returns to the club he represented as a youth and has signed a four-year deal with the South Yorkshire side, who reportedly paid around £18.5m to land the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Upon sealing the deal for Ramsdale’s services, Wilder said:

The goalkeeping situation is something we have to make sure we get right.

This is not about Dean, it’s about bringing Aaron in, but Dean was outstanding for us for two years. We know a lot about Aaron, we’ve watched him develop on loan at Chesterfield and then AFC Wimbledon and obviously we’ve watched him this season too.

I’d like to thank the board for their backing given the situation. Aaron is certainly amongst the best young goalkeepers in this country and we are delighted to have him.

The new Sheffield United number one said himself:

I spoke to him [Wilder] after the fee was agreed and a couple of days later he just said, ‘are we getting it done?’

I knew him, all of his coaching staff and Darren Ward [United’s goalkeeping coach].

It’s a place I always come back to and see friends if I ever get time off over the weekend and family members are only about an hour and a half away, so I get to see them more regularly as well.

Knowing the place, the training ground and the people so well, it definitely feels like home.

The History

Born in May 1998 and still in the embryonic stage of his professional career, Ramsdale hadn’t had any playing experience in the top two tiers of English football before 2019/20.

He had originally joined Sheffield United from Bolton Wanderers in 2013, progressing through the Blades’ academy system and graduating to reserve goalkeeper ahead of the 2016/17 season.

It was, fittingly, Wilder who handed him his senior debut, with the-then teenage custodian making two starts in the opening rounds of the FA Cup in late-2016.

Although Ramsdale didn’t make a single league appearance for the Blades, Bournemouth had already seen enough and snapped up the young shot-stopper for £800,000 in January 2017.

Over two years were to pass before he played a single competitive game for the Cherries and, in between, he was sent out on loan to Chesterfield and Wimbledon.

Ramsdale made 39 league appearances across those two half-season loan spells and it was in the second of them, with the Dons in League One, that he really caught the eye, keeping seven clean sheets in 20 starts and winning their 2018/19 Young Player of the Year award despite only joining the club midway through the campaign.

Returning to the south coast and featuring prominently in pre-season under Eddie Howe, Ramsdale was given the nod between the posts in 2019/20 and went on to start all but one of Bournemouth’s 38 league fixtures.

He kept just five clean sheets (no team registered fewer shut-outs than the Cherries) and conceded on 62 occasions but, as we’ll soon discuss, that was as much a reflection on relegated Bournemouth’s overall defensive shortcomings as it was an indictment on Ramsdale.

Indeed, only a fortnight ago, fans of the Cherries voted their former goalkeeper as their Player of the Season.

It's okay. I don't like the forced move of Son > Rashford.

I think you can save some money by ditching Ryan and Taylor for 4.0s which allows you to make upgrades to Bissouma.

    Bamford (yes I know)

    Bench fodders

2mil in the bank to switch Auba & Ziyech to KDB & Bruno if needed.

The way I see it Werner may blank just like Bamford undoubtedly will and I’m more of a fan of having my money in defence and midfield.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uli23qkmXOc

Bilic interview, it's in Croatian, I know, but main points are:

    1. He expected more money from the owners. It seems that they are willing/they only have to spend only 20 million, and he estimates they need 25 million just to keep Diangana, Krovinovic and Robinson. He said to the owners that "the hard part (getting into the Prem) is done", and he urged them to strenghten so they can establish themselves in the league and stop being the yoyo club. He said if the owners think it doesn't matter if we drop, we'll get promoted again, they are wrong, and this chance has to be taken.

    2. Praises Krovinovic, says he improved, he gets in the box, can play multiple positions, assists, off the field teammates like him, good attitude.

    3. Orshich was actual when Diangana was injured, but unlikely to happen now. He also watched Grbic, goalkeeper.

TL; DR: it's nicely translated here actually: https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/west-bromwich-albion/2020/08/18/west-brom-boss-slaven-bilic-talks-grbic-orsic-and-krovinovic/

There aren’t many starters as nailed as VVD. There will be even fewer this year with fixture congestion and the risk of cancelled fixtures due to positive tests. Gomez is the first choice pairing with VVD. There’s no data to suggest otherwise.

If you can have Auba for Fulham and West Ham before moving to KDB for GW 3 after a blank and Wolves - why not? Even if it's a potential -4, I'd rather have the guy who could easily get double-digits in those first two games before switching to the better long-term option

He's in my team at the moment. Bit of a gamble given poor form post-restart but I'm hoping the time off and a fresh new start can see him return to his best. I'll want Salah and KDB too, so don't see myself wanting any other 10m+ options like Bruno for captaincy. Also have Werner at 9.5 too.

    Werner or Martial...and why?

I've got both. Both teams have good fixture runs so you'll probably want to make sure you have at least one asset from each.

Your benching Vinagre against Sheffield? I’m seeing a lot of 5.5 mids hard to go anywhere without making 2 transfers if you want to get off

Not sure how nailed he is but that Alioski at Leeds appears to be a winger with some ok attacking stats, but is classified as a defender on fpl.

    The new Lundstram?!

Which two do you prefer? Son and Dier or Pulisic and Aurier?

Neither tbh, but gun to my head I’d say Son & Dier

Pulisic if fit, he doesn't play for Mourinho.

Think Ziyech is someone to include and I think Son could match Kane, bargain at 9. These guys prices might rocket. I wouldn't go liverpool double defense yet, Arsenal and Chelsea especially with that firepower, both will breach it. Spurs defence is more likely for CS.

Also a lot of views leicester too shaky at the back with a weakened defence, especially with Chilwell leaving. I'd personally invest more in defence, picking the right defenders with the right fixtures can nail in those CS. Ings also has a proven record and good juicy fixture in GW1. I'd want one of him or Jiminez (as consistent returns as it gets and bonus point magnet...typically gets them 9 pointers at 8.5m - bargain) so maybe downgrade one of Kane/Werner? Bring in Ziyech instead? Saves money, more balance. Just my opinion anyway

I think that by the time the first whistle sounds, there will be better options than Vinagre or Saliba in the 4.5 bracket. There may be better options now, but low information without preseason matches to digest.

For those that want to have 2-3 United players for their GW2 match against palace, do you feel like you’ve seen sufficient quantity and consistency of performances by United against teams that park the bus or do you think that Palace won’t park the bus?

United are fine against parked buses now. Bruno(c) is very possible for me, though Auba does have WHU so it's not a lock.

I’d like to have a United player, but I’m not feeling what seems like the same level of urgency or freneticism about GW2. I think the blank can be navigated and that having millions on the bench or taking hits isn’t necessary.
