What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

It turns out ‘Upside Chasing’ is in vogue these days – but how does it work and how can it help you to Fantasy Premier League success in 2020/21?

As a proponent of this strategy, I thought it would be a good idea to address this buzz-word and, at the same time, look at some of the numbers behind how it works.

It is a style of play that underpinned a successful 2019/20 campaign for me and there’s no reason why you can’t use a similar approach this time around.

So… how does it work? Let’s find out.

What is Upside Chasing?

How De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

When you’re faced with tough Fantasy decisions, Upside Chasing is when you pick the option that has the highest ceiling, the best chance of scoring you a massive points haul.

Crucially, Upside Chasing also means recalibrating your mind in terms of what you perceive to be a “high risk” move.

If there is merit in choosing a less popular player, that has a higher ceiling, backed up by eye-test and data, the only reason that choice could be a risk is if you were to pay attention to ownership and, to a certain extent, value (which we’ll talk about later).

Now, there is nothing wrong with paying attention to these factors. I certainly don’t ignore them completely but I would rather play FPL based on what I see on the football pitch and in the Members Area. If I started allowing myself to be mostly led by ownership percentages, I would take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror, I can tell you now.

I’m not saying that playing the percentage game is wrong; I do a fair bit of it. But you should not be scared of the ownership to the extent that it makes you act against your instinct when they are watching a game, catching some highlights on Match of the Day or executing a deep dive into the FFS Members Area

Simply put, Upside Chasing is about making sure I’m doing the fun (and right) thing rather than letting others dictate my game.

How did I implement Upside Chasing in 2019/20?

Knowing how Upside Chasing works is one thing. Understanding how to put it into practice on specific decisions is something else entirely.

Those of you who read this article last year will know how the performance of top players often varies depending on who the opponent is. Tracking this across a season is the key to understanding the part fixtures play in Upside Chasing.

I noticed early last season that there were a lot of big hitters and I couldn’t own all of them at the same time. This would lead to a high variance in points between Gameweeks.

I also noted that there were a lot of glue guys (set-and-forget options) in my team, primarily in the low to mid-price bracket and I held them for long parts of the season without spending transfers there. This was most of my defence and players like Raúl Jiménez (£8.5m) who just kept on delivering.

I loosely assumed that spending transfers in defence would lead to a net 15 to 20 point profit or loss over five to six Gameweeks.

I could attempt to make the same gain in a single Gameweek with high-impact big-hitter switching for captaincies primarily based on fixtures. This impact was even greater when the person I was captaining had low ownership.

This constant big-hitter switching based on fixtures is a risky strategy and you need to compromise on value for these players as well as not being afraid of ownership while doing the same.

It also a fair assumption to make that some players are not set-and-forget assets and will not maintain consistent form throughout the season as we saw with Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) during his first Liverpool campaign.

If that is the case, and you see a big hitter showcasing that kind of form throughout the season, you don’t need to move him.

Loosely put, this was the largely the thinking implemented last season but there are a lot more moving parts to it.

You don’t look at this as a hard and fast rule and should remain reactive to all the curve balls that FPL throws at you.

In fact, I might not even implement Upside Chasing this season as I strongly believe in having no rules or pre-conceived notions… although it is in my DNA, more often than not, to pick the high-ceiling option.

I realised while talking to Walsh on an FML FPL podcast appearance that it subconsciously stems from years of playing monthly FPL competitions where I used to take multiple hits at the end of the month and I got very used to having an ideal team on paper.

Anyway, enough subjective jabber for now. Let’s dive into the juicy numbers which may or may not validate the thinking behind big-hitter switching for the Upside Chasing theory. This section is for FFS Premium Members only.

    Little bit nervous to own Werner from the get go.
    Nations league qualifiers for Germany just before EPL , Frank may ease him in.

      I think he will start, he's considerably better than anything else Chelsea have to offer up front. Although Giroud was showing some nice form back end of last season

    First attempt for this season, how is this looking for GW1?

    McCarthy
    Trent, Vinagre, Doherty, Ferguson
    Salah, Auba, ASM, Soucek
    Werner, Mitro

    (Steer, Dallas, Brewster, Bruno)

    Will likely swap Auba for KDB eventually

    Lloris (Martin)

    TAA - Doherty - Dier/Davies - KWP/Vinagre (Ferguson)

    Salah - Ziyech - Armstrong (Bissouma, Anguissa)

    Ings - Vardy - Werner

    1 ITB
    GW2: Ings --> Martial (C)

    Built around a GW10 WC, defense is set with me expecting 6+ CS from both Wolves and Spurs in the first 10. If Vinagre's spot is clearly threatened (why Nuno!) KWP comes in, Saints have decent fixtures and 4 CS hopefully. Tinkered without Salah but I expect he'll score 25+ if Keita/Thiago are supplying him so he stays. Ziyech is awesome, has great fixtures, supplying excellent players, if he's as great as he looks he can be here till GW38. As said before, Saints have the fixtures and Armstrong has solid reviews so hopefully he returns a few.

    The forwards are where it gets interesting and the reason I've dropped a premium mid. I really like the options we have, FPL has done a great job of making them competitive this year. I expect most of my transfers before the WC to be spent swapping in and out looking for those hauls and getting those captains. Vardy has an amazing opening five, even if Leicester were poor late he was still as brilliant as ever. Maddison's return should benefit him too. Ings is a great placeholder for Martial, both will hopefully tear apart Palace back to back. Werner is excellent, we've all heard about him. The extra .5 ITB is so I can move Vardy to Kane when Kane has that phenomenal run GW5-8. I'm keeping an eye on a GW3 Aguero captain but besides that I don't see any great opportunities worth the risk over Kane.

    Going w/o Fernandes/Auba/KDB is risky, and mids are stronger value but comparing the fixtures and the difficulties both Manchester teams could be facing I judge it to be worth it. Thoughts?

      I don't like the lack of captaincy options. I wouldn't pick one Spurs defender, let alone two. And you've really boxed yourself in in terms of price points (3x budget midfielders; 3x £8.5-10m attackers). Final point not as crucial, but can mean hits if you need to restructure the balance of the team.

        Prefer double Spurs defense, Mourinho second season teams start the season very strongly and he's the master of clean sheets. Vardy/Martial/Salah/Kane/Werner are fine captaincy options, imo. Good point on the price points.

        1. Pegboy

          I've seen far too many Spurs games under Mourinho to know he definitely is not the master of clean sheets any more.

          I'm not putting my faith in 'second season syndrome' until I see some evidence of defensive improvement. Hojbjerg might help, but reports from Southampton are v.mixed.

          If any of the options were 4.5 I'd consider it, but you're paying 5.5 for a keeper who relied on penalty saves for points last season, and Davies and Dier are non-entities attacking wise.

            Disagree, I expect at least 6 CS in the first 10. I saw evidence of improvement, Sheffield game aside, goals were mainly conceded from wonderstrikes and set pieces. Personally very confident Spurs will start well.

      That midfield is dire.

      Remember that the points are in midfield. They get an extra point for a goal and an extra point for a clean sheet. No Son or Kane is also not a good idea imo. Would lose one of the forwards and get Son in midfield over the two duds.

      Lloris is arguably the best keeper to pick but he's also 1.0m more which is too heavy a price to pay for a goalie spot that will be worth 25-30 points tops over the season. Furthermore, you can just take McCarthy to start for his good fixtures and WC in the next best keeper if Southampton are looking poor.

        Fair points, though I like the forward options a lot more than midfielders, not sure that the increased goal/CS points make up for it. Kane will come in ~GW4 for Vardy.

    5 man Defence just doesn't work when the points are in the midfield and 3-5-2 being one of the best systems in FPL

    1. Pegboy

      There's no 'best system' in FPL. There are systems that happened to work better last season, but you can win with pretty much any formation.

      Some evidence that premium strikers are overpriced since a lot of PL teams switched to playing more variations of 4-3-3 and the attacking midfielders are essentially upfront. But it feels like FPL have adjusted their pricing to reflect this. Maybe not enough yet.

      Starting with 5 atb can work well, but it depends on the final details. Over time, you can slowly move cash up front for bandwagons that sustain themselves like an Ings over a Pukki

              It's your team so feel free to ignore but Dubravka is a no for me, he could be a 4.5 who will get close to or better his points.

              Egan, again last season Henderson saved them a lot so I'd wait to see how Ramsdale settles first, Justin Vinagre and Ferguson could all within a few weeks be non starters so something to watch out for

              Maybe downgrade mitro and get a better mid?

                Honestly, I didn't plan to stick with Justin. Mane and/or Auba will be downgraded to KDB and/or Bruno. Then I will switch Justin to Taylor (Burnley). Haven't picked him now because of the BGW and Leicester in GW2. I will also upgrade Mount to Pulišić once he's back. Vinagre will stay unless Wolves sign AMN.

      • @persecuted_by_mods

          Look how people reacted to Son scoring in a friendly against a lower league team without Kane even playing, so are those same people going to keep their nerve and to the plan they've made now when gw1 someone hits a brace they hadn't thought of, or your player gets a red? Or the team you thought would get off to a flier stumbles. Planning is sensible and fun to talk about, just expect it to not play out like that because it almost never does

            Doesn't change the fact that Son is underpriced. He's a proven like 6ppg player with good fixtures under 2nd season Mourinho. He got up to nearly 10m last season and was still picked. He starts this season at 9.0m and is still nailed on.

            I was stupid not to see it before, he should be in a lot more teams than he currently is. Lots of anti-Spurs bias when in actual fact, the team's stats post lockdown are pretty impressive overall.

                Oh yeah Son's value isn't the point I'm trying to make, he's a great option and they have great fixtures. Going with Kane myself

            I'm in the camp of benching a MUtd asset for week 1, and also like Spurs fixtures medium term. With that in mind:

            A - Son + Rashford
            B - Alli + Bruno

            Gut says A, which is what I'm on, but Bruno's ownership and Son's likely price drop given how many people seem to be using him as a placeholder are making me think B.

            Also, seeing a lot about Bruno on penalties, but didn't he share them with Rashford?

              Rashford probably still gets the odd one (he wins a pen if they're 3-0 up, he's on a hat trick etc) - I reckon he'll get 1 in 8-10 or so.

              I like A of your two options - but keep an eye on Alli.

            I really dislike the concept of 'upside chasing'. It's a pointless term, adds nothing new to the game. Yet LateRiser keeps pushing it as if it's some profound new concept and a way of playing never seen before. Honestly, when has 'picking differentials that you think will do better than the template' NOT been the absolute bog standard way to play FPL?

                I don't think you understand what it means if you think it's just 'picking differentials'.

                It's about targeting fixtures aggressively with high ceiling picks that may or may not be considered 'template'. It's not just picking random dudes no one else has. Lateriser isn't going around picking Firmino for a one week punt.

                It's stuff like bringing in Aguero for one week against WBA even though he has a ton of bad fixtures around it and isn't nailed on. Loads of people would avoid that in favor or steadier options, but chasing that Aguero pick can yield big returns.

                  Thats just a fancy way of saying ‘picking differentials with good fixtures’ is it not?

                    No. It's not. Because some of them aren't differentials. He's not picking them because they're differentials but because they have high ceilings but also high associated risk.

                        Doesn’t that apply to all strategies out there? If you are against naming any strategy, I understand that. I don’t see the point of grouping certain type of moves and branding them as a strategy useful either.

                        But for some it probably makes it easier to understand and conceptualise so I don’t have anything against naming/branding strategies as Lateriser does. Also whatever the strategy, I always find the insights from Lateriser among the most useful on this site and among the fpl community.

                          I don't see it as a separate strategy. It's simply the way to play the game. Unless you are a shite manager who is afraid to sell players just because they have high ownership even though you think there are better options out there

                  I read it. The stats about how players perform against poor, medium, and good sides is very useful, because it indicates that players like Bruno and Vardy are better with gold fixtures while Salah is more of a set and forget.

                  The concept 'upside chasing' is not useful

                My strategy this season start is similar to what he's preaching.

                GW 2 : Mane -> Rashford
                GW 3 : Auba -> Salah
                GW 4 : Son -> Sterling

                Most people like you don't/won't even consider switching between premium attackers.

              Son at 9M is such a bargain, world class player playing for a Mourinho second season team. Downgraded from 9.5 despite 13 goals and 11 assists... difficult to believe, even if he won't be at ST anymore! Only reason I won't have him is because I'll have double Spurs + Kane soon are already locked in, and he's a difficult captain as he tends to spend a few matches holding hands with the touchline and others up front with Kane. I'm confident Spurs will start strong in the first 8 GWs, happened in 14/15 and 17/18 too.

                He such a good option but if Ali is back on the scene that could make Son drift out wide and limit the chances getting forward imo
                I got Kane locked in at present 🙂

                If Kane picks up any sort of injury, Son is straight in for me.

                Otherwise nah. It wasn't just the "wide" thing for me, he just wasn't getting into the box at all. Not the explosive player we saw under Poch.

                If he starts great I might reconsider, because even 9.2/9.3 is a great price for someone like that.

                  Mourinho tended to play with aurier pushed up on the right and son was under instructions to provide width on the left, which limited son's involvement in the final third.

                    Also PSG did set up with 3 DMs basically to play entirely on counter. What are Chelsea gonna do exactly? Hope Kante's fit I guess otherwise it's a Jorginho-Kepa axis of doom either side of him.

              GW1 Draft:

              McCarthy
              TAA - Ferguson - Egan - Davies
              Salah - Aubameyang (C) - Son - Perreira
              Kane - Mitrovic
              Subs: Nyland - Justin - Anguissa - Davis
              Bank: 1.0

              Plan:
              GW 2: Aubameyang ==> Bruno
              GW 3: Son ==> KdB
              GW 4: Davies ==> 5.0 Chelsea DEF
              GW 5: Wildcard, if required

              No Salah the obvious one but liking the fixtures for Spurs/Leicester for first couple so taking a punt on Kane and Vardy as well as Auba.

              McCarthy (Steer)
              TAA, Doherty, Vinagre (Douglas, Ferguson)
              Ziyech, Armstrong, Auba, Son, Pereira

                Douglas won't even be at Leeds let alone starting most likely. Vinagre also likely not to start.

              Mates this strategy would allow to avoid an early WC use (using WC early has been my base case scenario...). Any thoughts please?

              McCarthy
              TAA, KWP, Justin, Ferguson
              ASM, Son, Auba, Salah
              Vardy, Werner

              Nyland, Bissouma, Mitchel, Davis

              Transfers:
              . Post-GW1: Save or Vardy to Martial
              . Post GW2: Auba to Greenwood, ASM to Ziyech and the above one if not yet done. Costs -4.
              . Post GW3: Son to KDB

              I would always have at least 0.5 in the bank as buffer to accommodate price changes.

              What do you think?
