Captain Sensible

Who are the best Captain options for FPL Blank Gameweek 1?

Jan Sienkiewicz was the king of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy in 2019/20, scoring a whopping 657 points from the armband, the second-highest in the whole world. We asked him to help out with the captaincy debate ahead of the new campaign’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

Quite an unprecedented 2020/2021 pre-season is drawing to a close, as we are eagerly waiting for the new FPL campaign to start. Hundreds of drafts, multiple formations, Wildcard strategies and planning early transfers; we have all been there and, in fact, we are all living in this world right now.

There is one common denominator in our efforts; trying to find the best captain. Getting the right skipper is usually a crucial component to having a successful season and Fantasy managers are looking to start the campaign strongly with the right choice. Let’s evaluate the options available for us in Gameweek 1.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)  tops the Fantasy Football Scout captain poll with 53.3% of votes, as he faces a newly-promoted Fulham side in Gameweek 1.

The Arsenal striker, who has been reclassified as a midfielder for this season’s edition of FPL, is currently owned by 44.1% of Fantasy managers – which is more than the combined ownership of Sadio Mané (£12.0m, 13.3% ownership) and Mohammed Salah (£12.0m, 29.8% ownership).

The Gabonese international starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory two weeks ago (scoring a long-distance goal in a 1-1 draw that the Gunners won on penalties) and then netted twice in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Aston Villa behind-closed-doors.

Aubameyang’s great form is accompanied by a favourable Gameweek 1 fixture too, as Fulham’s defensive vulnerabilities are still fresh in people’s minds from the 2018/19 campaign. The Cottagers conceded a league-high of 81 goals the last time they were in the top flight, which included nine goals over two games against Arsenal (5-1 and 4-1 defeats).

Metrics

The second most popular pick for the armband among the Fantasy Football Scout users this week is Salah (25.6%). Considering that the runaway 2019/20 champions are hosting newly-promoted Leeds United, and Manchester City and Manchester United are without a fixture, it seems to some extent surprising that the Fantasy-proven Egyptian midfielder is struggling to attract more interest for the armband.

Even more of a surprise, Mané sits at third in the poll with only 3.9% of votes. The Senegalese winger, who scored 18 goals and provided 10 Fantasy assists last season, showed glimpses of class in pre-season and will be looking to improve on his impressive home record against newly-promoted opposition on Saturday.

Behind the podium we can find Chelsea’s new striker Timo Werner (£9.5m, 3.5% of votes), Liverpool’s defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m, 2.1%), as well as Tottenham Hotspur assets – Son Heung-min (£9.5, 2.1%) and Harry Kane (£10.5m, 1.8%).

Based on the poll, the main decision managers will have to make regarding captaincy will involve comparing Aubameyang with Salah. We will therefore mostly focus on the Liverpool and Arsenal options.

I've got to be honest with myself: if history is any indication, despite my best efforts I'll still end up WCing early. May as well steer into the skid.

    Johnstone (Rodak)
TAA - Dier - KWP - Justin (Mitchell)
Salah - Auba - Alli - ASM (Riedewald)
    Vardy - Ings (Brewster)

I can always talk myself into Ings > Adams and improve elsewhere, but I don't want to double up on Newcastle with Wilson and apart from Son I don't see whom else to upgrade.

Could do Alli + Ings + Brewster to Son + Adams + Mitro, but then I have a benching problem.

Why not go for Button as 2nd goalie. Would keep Alli, as his points were better than Son's when he played just behind Kane and Son was on the wing.

        If I go 8.5, McCarthy/Steer is a better combo.

    Balls

I've been going round in circles here trying to avoid the Chelsea double up but still come back to the same team. Very likely what I run with

    McCarthy (Button)
    TAA Davies Justin (Ayling Taylor)
    Auba Havertz Rodriguez Soucek
    Vardy Ings Werner

Desperately trying to avoid a repeat of last year's Gw2 WC - which ironically was riotously successful

    GW3 this time 😀

    * no one's around so I can whisper that I secretly want to put Rodriguez in defence to get Robbo for GW4 fixture turn. But even I baulk at Soucek as 3rd mid*

thinking of either 343 or 352, is JWP or Adams the better option?

also, Fernandes + Mitro or Martial + 7.5 (e.g. Barnes)? been on Son > Fernandes after gw1 all the time, might as well stick?!

I’m playing in a head to head league this season, does anybody have any tips/advice on any potential strategy’s? Or should I run my team the same as if I was playing in a classic league?

I did both and noticed that you have to pay a bit more attention to your main rival's squads in the head to head. But generally not until you are a bit into the season. There are times where you can block and cover players better in the head to head than in the classic. Just my two cents.

The winning strategy in H2H is to take tons of hits early in order to build team value -- especially in a week where you predict you're going to lose anyway. (Even if you lose a match by 52 pts, it's still just 1 loss in H2H....) You lose a few games in the beginning of the season, but by the 2nd half your team value is so high that you basically crush everyone each week.
I was in a H2H league 2 seasons ago and one guy used this strategy. He finished 200 pts behind me (seriously), but eclipsed me in the final week of the season to win the H2H crown. I think he was 17-1-1 in the final half of the season, with a team that finished over £108M, maybe even £109M.
The other hidden advantage of this strategy is that since you're "coming from behind" for most of the season, because you take early losses, the rest of the league doesn't gun for you. In the example season I mentioned above, I was in first place all year (until the last week), so everyone in the league saved their chips to try to take me out. No one else noticed that the other guy who followed this sneaky H2H strategy was actually the guy they needed to worry about.
Personally I'm too interested in my world ranking to ever follow this strategy (and why I never enter H2H leagues anymore), but it definitely works if winning your H2H is the only thing you're interested in. Good luck.

    3. I Must Break You

Oh and also, generally speaking, you don't want to double up on defenders when playing H2H. Some percentage of the time (X%) it works great, but the other 1 - X% of games it puts you at a disadvantage and therefore just biases you towards a .500 season, which is never going to come close to winning your league.
One could probably argue that TAA/Robertson might be one possible exception because both of them can score in other ways besides clean sheets. Cheers.

Peacock-Farrell? Clear 2nd choice in a defensively convincing side, only 1.5% ownership. Something I'm missing?

Conceptually similar to mine above. Like it but comes with risks no?

Like Hendo - he's been on my list for a while. Does he start? Might end up borrowing him.

Dislike Wilson. Not convinced he starts and both him and Havertz is a big call. New look Newcastle attack might struggle a bit imo especially if Jonjo is out.

Son? He's been in and out of my team - mostly ahead of Havertz. Worried about Europa. Not sure early fixtures are that great really apart from WH in GW3.

Kane - similar. Like him loads. Keeper.

The more I think about it, the potential move of Salah to Bruno may not exactly be the best move. Liverpool can go guns blazing on Chelsea and Arsenal too with their defence whereas something like Ings > martial could be the ideal Utd asset.

How exactly is Bruno more essential to his team than Salah? And how does that equate to point differential between those moves?

Data please, else spin. Sooo many other variables involved in those moves and that's such a high level response with absolutely nothing to back it up besides words. At least explain why. Polar opposite of clear and decisive imo.

With Wolves' new signings in defence, surely Coady is a much safer bet than Saiss? I don't want to waste transfers on 5.0 mil defenders.

I am concerned about these two defenders from same team :

*One is boring pick but nailed :
    Coady & lascelles

*Another slightly exciting pick but not sure in nailedness :
    Saiss & Lewis

Which one is your picks ?

    1. Joggers Nipple

I would go Saiss and Lewis

My final draft has a solid framework and 15 active players. I start with no Mancs and Werner as the only Chelsea player. The plan is GW3 sell both Auba and Salah (can be delayed if either does exceptionally well) for any 2 of: KDB, Sterling, Bruno, Havertz, Pulisic. Can take one and convert Werner to Aguero if Chelsea are sluggish. The key point is I have plenty of options and two/one games to assess. I will also have cash itb to give further options going forward. No hits, no wildcard.

I flirted with him yesterday. Didn't have sufficient confidence to go the whole slog with McCarthy so looked to 5.0. Was unsure about Ramsdale so went for Pickford given the fixtures. Got a bit doubtful due to Everton injuries at the back and, well, Pickford. Found a compromise I'm happy with in a 4.5 rotation.

Yeah, Everton injury concerns are putting me off. Not sure how secure the defense will be without Holgate.

Is it not allowed to create two teams or is this perfectly fine? Just intrugued as deciding whether to play my proper team versus a more mess about for fun team. Thanks.

Doesn't break any rules but extremely heavily frowned upon here. Personally I don't have any problem with an alternative fun team, but for your own peace of mind, you might not want to mention that one on this forum.

Ahh ok cheers Andy, i’m a seasoned player and have been on here ages, but was just a simple quandary really, i won’t mention it again haha. If i do then i do, i may even leave it as one team is enough stress haha! 😉

I suspect a huge number of posters here have fun teams, girlfriend's team, dead teams, secret mini league teams etc but don't reveal them. Even some of the hypocrites taking the moral high road when naive posters let it slip. You just do your thing 😉

Haha agreed 🙂 I was gonna set up my girlfriends team but leaving it as i know she’ll just leave it and i can’t have her doing better than me haha!
I shall decide tomorrow for a fun team alongside serious one. Cheers buddy 🙂

I'm pretty sure it does break the rules though -

Switched it around after advice on here.

    Cheers, anything else required?

    McCarthy Steer
    TAA Davies Justin Taylor Mitchell
    Salah Aubameyang JWP ASM Soucek
    Kane Ings Mitro

    Ings becomes Martial.
