Ziyech’s FPL ownership and price on the rise as new-look Chelsea find their rhythm

Chelsea 4-1 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Tammy Abraham (£7.2m), Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), Thiago Silva (£5.5m), Timo Werner (£9.4m) | David McGoldrick (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m) x2, Mateo Kovacic (£5.3m), N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) | Sander Berge (£5.0m)
  • Bonus: Ziyech x3, Abraham x2, Werner x1

Chelsea came from behind to beat Sheffield United with a performance that ticked many a Fantasy box.

All four of the home side’s goals involved summer signings and the victory underlined the impression that coach Frank Lampard is finally finding the right balance in his team, from Abraham to Ziyech.

Double Bubble

One of Lampard’s key moves has been to find room for both Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) and Timo Werner (£9.4m) in the starting XI.

Saturday’s result meant Chelsea have won three games and drawn one, scoring 14 goals and conceding four, when the duo start together in the league.

Lampard talked about the pair after the midweek win over Rennes in the Champions League in which they also both started (and scored):

When we brought in players in attacking areas we brought in players who are versatile in their nature, Timo playing on the left for instance. The qualities Tammy can bring to the team are never lost on me.

Werner’s ownership has been yo-yoing this season, with the trend upward at present. He’s now in 23.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads, with 25,000+ new managers buying into him ahead of the international break.

The 2.2%-owned Abraham remains the differential pick of the two, which is hardly surprising when he’s started just the four games to Werner’s eight in the league this season. But he’s produced  two goals and two assists from those matches.

And the pair’s threat is so strong that Lampard could be tempted to view them both, and not just Werner, as nailed-on starters.

Midfield Merriment

Maximum bonus points and a double-digit haul went to Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m) – for the second straight Gameweek.

He’s now amassed 25 points from his first two starts in the league and his ownership is ballooning.

He went from 114,819 to 624,213 FPL managers on the strength of his goal and assist against Burnley in Gameweek 7 and he’s already top of the transfers in for Gameweek 9 thanks to his brace of assists against Sheffield United.

Small wonder that Lampard was gushing in his post-match praise:

He exudes confidences in how much he wants to receive the ball and be the important player. He also has great work ethic so he is a complete player. He’s been a big plus and I expect there is a lot more to come from him.

It’s only been two full games, but there’s a strong sense that it is Ziyech, and not the self-isolating Kai Havertz (£8.3m), who could be the key player when it comes to Lampard finding the right balance in his team:

The balance of the team felt great. There were so many good things in what we were creating, we scored two goals from set pieces. I don’t want to get too carried away but I’m happy.

Not getting carried away should be the theme for FPL bosses as well because Chelsea’s next six matches are probably not as easy as they might appear on FPL’s Fixture Difficulty Rating.

A Gameweek 10 visit from Spurs and games against an obdurate Wolves and this season’s surprise package West Ham all look tricky, but Ziyech is making an incredibly strong case for inclusion anyway.

Defenders On The Attack

The second most-bought defender ahead of Gameweek 8 was Chilwell, who scored his second goal in three home matches.

That appeased the 324,298 new owners who were hoping for a fourth clean sheet in the last five league fixtures from Chelsea.

Considerably fewer managers enjoyed Thiago Silva‘s (£5.5m) first attacking return for the Blues, but those goals underlined the potency of Lampard’s defenders.

The most popular defensive transfer for the Gameweek was Kurt Zouma (£5.3m), who was brought in by more than half a million managers on the back of the Blues’ new-found defensive stability and the centre-half’s three goals this season.

Thanks to Silva’s strike, all four of Lampard’s regular backline have now scored.

Zouma leads the way for goals among defenders and Chilwell is second (he also has two assists), while Reece James (£5.0m) is the other to have found the net, with an assist to his name from his six starts as well.

Small wonder that three of that back four are now in the top 10 for both points and ownership among FPL defenders, with Thiago (3.1%) the only outlier (and differential).

Sheffield Of Bad Dreams

One point from eight matches, just four goals scored and zero clean sheets kept, the Blades are the bluntest of weapons at the moment.

Manager Chris Wilder was as honest as ever with his assessment of his team:

At times my teams are naive. It’s irrelevant. We have given away some poor goals. I think we have to look at ourselves.

It’s fair to say few Fantasy managers are looking at his players.

David McGoldrick‘s (£5.3m) second strike of the season meant he’s now been involved in half of the side’s goals.

But his strike partner, and the Blades’ most popular asset in FPL, Rhian Brewster (£4.5m and 6.7%), had a wretched time of it at Stamford Bridge.

Brewster’s undoubted promise, and cheap price tag, has persuaded a decent chunk of FPL managers to have him as their third striker.

Based on his complete non-involvement on Saturday, even at £4.5m he’s a waste of money.

As for the Blades as a team, the 431 shots they conceded last season was bettered by only seven teams. This year’s total – 120 – is the league’s second worst.

Never a team to create many chances, unless they can sort out their defensive issues, their players will remain a major Fantasy no-no.

Chelsea XI (4-3-2-1): Mendy; James, Zouma, Silva, Chilwell; Kante, Kovacic (Jorginho 71′), Mount; Werner (Giroud 87′), Ziyech; Abraham.

Sheffield United XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Baldock, Stevens, Basham, Egan; Lundstram, Berge, Lowe, Norwood (Osborn 62′); McGoldrick, Brewster (McBurnie 63′).

This Bruno or Vardy on WC dilemma is absolutely killing me... Might be one of the toughest decisions I've made all season.

While I think Bruno seems the better pick, Vardy would be a part of a 343 and Bruno 352 and i feel 343 might be the way to go with so much value up top with cheap strikers. 0.4 price difference between them as well to make things harder.

Keep switching between the two but atleast I have time to think about it

vardy's stats haven't been great, but he's raked the points in despite that. i've got him and happy to keep (would have been a great pick but for that second penalty).

I am probably about to activate the WC today. Every season I am seem to do it on the second International break.

      Consistency!!

I am thinking Fernandes too for the same reasons. I am thinking two 6m strikers with DCL so will still go 3-4-3

You're never gunna get the definite answer you're looking for as none of us has a crystal ball.

But, Utd are the better side (current form notwithstanding), Bruno has more ways to score points with more assists, an extra point for goals and even cleanie points.

So, I'd do the 3-5-2 with Bruno personally. You can thank or chastise me later when we see how it plays out

When stuck between forwards and mids in FPL who look like a coin toss, I go with midfielders. Because the game is skewed to give them more points. It might not work out short term, but it's been proven this way on the long haul. Again and again. For three seasons now

Bruno will be the top scorer in FPL. He has amassed points when United were rubbish. His away record is second to none. United are ready to bounce now.
I can have Ziyech, Vardy and KDB or Bruno, KDB and a cheap striker. The first option gives me more flexibility with strikers upto 10.1m. Having Bruno means I'm trapped by low priced strikers under 7.7m. If Bruno output drops like it did after the break then its a problem.

3 4 3 seems the best formation right now. When I switched to 3 5 2 my rank dropped from 350k to 1.2m.

Think we need to put in Leicester’s 8 penalties in 8 games into perspective... those numbers will not be sustainable therefore severely hindering Vardy’s output.

From open play Vardy does not justify anywhere near his 10.0m pricetag

Of course he won't. But you don't expect him to score 38, if you would, his price will be £14m. And you don't want him for 38 gameweeks either. But at the right time he's always a good option. And GW10-13 feels like the right time for a lot of us.

Kane is the only premium striker to own long term. You could even make a case for going without any premium striker at all considering all the prospects in midfield.

Just a flippant reamrk about it looking like a decent BB squad.

I would start with Forster Bissouma/Brewster and a 4.0 ish defender and work your way from there. At best you only ever want one 50/50 call on your bench. Saw a few benching Watkins this week cause of the fixture.

You’re right, I personally benched 9 pointer KWP. But my consideration with bench was soucek who got 9 points too. I think we can plan all we want but we’re gonna leave points on the Bench no matter what. Why not go with a strong 15 and go with fixtures, come what may? They are prob more prone to price rises too

      What's that 2.0m ITB for?

Definitely get KdB on WC ahead of GW10.

I hate the defense. It's way too expensive.

If I was on WC my defense would be Chilwell, Cancelo, Lamptey, Coufal, 3.9m fodder.

Yeah if I downgrade 2 premium def I can definitely get kdb in.. for who though? Needs a rethink on my end.

I’m leaning Antonio. Not sure I want two Villa attackers with Grealish as well.

I’ve tried to ignore Bamford so far, but he’s remarkably consistent. But it has to dry up soon, right?!

That's my hope but his stats are very impressive. Not sure I fully trust Antonio's fitness now and even though I have Grealish I may double up with Watkins this GW.

I know what the article is saying regarding Brewster being a poor option even at 4.5. But, I can't agree at all.

It's not like any of us will actually be playing him (for a while). So he's got plenty of time to bed into his new team and SHU have got plenty of time to get their s**t together.

At the end of the day he's only competing with other 4.5 options. So, who exactly is so much better at that price? Bissouma is okay I suppose, but still likely to get you a 2pter if called upon.

Brewster might end up with between 5-10 goals once the season is done just through being a playing striker with an eye for goal (even playing in a poor attacking side).

I dont really like ur def tbh taylor has pretty bad fixtures Pva after the next 3 the same I would want a west ham def in there for sure and I think chilwell is def one to own at the moment.

Midfield is solid trio I forgot to add Kdb in my confirmed picks below, I dont like berge either but we all need enablers and hes probably as good an option as soucek considering berge has pens.

Strikers are solid I am also considering getting in an everton striker and swapping to Vardy but I have bad memories of last year where I planned to get Vardy then decided to get wilson for 2 weeks as he had amazing fixtures and would then switch to vardy, even captained Wilson and he blanked both games and I think Vardy got like 2 or 3 goals and went up 0.3 in price. I think if u are going for an Everton pick you shd just get DCL and 1 fixture shdn't be as brutal as it was for me last year if it goes wrong.

PvA to Robbo in GW 12, Justin to Ayling in GW 13 probably.
I'll always have minimum 3 defenders playing week in week out (easy fixtures on paper) with this setup. Try making a spreadsheet and you'll know..

DC-L for Richarlison will always be an option as they are the same price now.

all Wildcards lets discuss what options we have.

who are your essential picks that are set in your team ?

who are the options you are trying to fit in and what combinations are you looking at?

For me I haven't finalised my formation as yet and I am also struggling with the Vardy or Bruno debate.

My essentials (confirmed picks I shd say) are Salah, Grealish and Ziyech in midfield and Chilwell and Coufal in defence

one of Watkins/Bamford one of Vardy/Bruno one of Cancelo/Bellerin and I would like either Antonio or Soucek

What are you guys looking at currently ?

If I had to choose, my priorities would be:

      Cresswell
      Chilwell

with trent out cant u afford it now ? That seems like the ultimate Power 5 midfield on WC but means no vardy and 6m strikers for me, might just abt be able to push up to DCL tho

I’ll have DCL and likely Antonio/Watkins. My TV is very poor so I’m surprised I’m able to fit all this in.

DCL I’ve had from gw1 at 7.0 so makes it a bit easier

I'm on WC and settled on this exact mid, including:
        Martines GK
        Chilwell + Bellerin + 4.5 + 4.5 def
        DCL + Watins in front

I think that team will settle into the template WC team at least for 3-5-2 formation

with trent likely out for a few weeks the defence looks better and allows Chilwell

I think if Antonio is fit then he comes in for watkins and probably locks this team in for me as well.

so it seems most of us are set on

      Salah, Kdb, Grealish in midfield

Chilwell and a West ham def
      and
most likely Watkins as the 6m striker option

Ziyech has 2 AFCON qualifying games for Monaco during the international break. He started the season late due to injury. Theres no doubt I'm bringing him in, but unsure about timing.

My plan is to move TAA and Foden to Ziyech and Digne (or alternative)

Digne - not fully convinced yet due to his fixtures after GW11, but would be a great short term option with FUL, LEE and BUR as his next 3

Do I wait until after these international fixtures and lose out on the price rise, or go in early before he goes up again?

It just occurred to me that I can get double City defence with KDB by GW10, giving this:

    Mart Steer
    Chilwell Cancelo Dias Vestergaard Coufal
    Salah KDB Bruno Ziyech Grealish
    DCL Bamford Brewster

    The transfers:
GW9: Kane to DCL for free
    GW10: Son + Kilman to KDB + Dias (-4)

Coufal and Vest on bench duty most of the time anyway

Too much on the bench? Too much City?

I've got my eggs in one basket, double Liverpool in midfield...Mane and Salah.

Would you keep Mane for this week or move him on to get the likes of Fernandes/Ziyech?

Historically he's got a good record vs Leicester

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years

The issue with owning both Pool mids is that they're very likely to be among top 3 for FPL points by the end of the season, repeatedly, until Liverpool's performances fall off a cliff or they have injuries

There's never really a justification for selling one of them. But if you have an opportunity to spread the funds, take the leap. Accept the funds and different cap choice as your reason. Has to be for top talents like Bruno, City boys and Ziyech, yes. Makes an impending Mane explosion easier to swallow
