Ziyech’s FPL ownership and price on the rise as new-look Chelsea find their rhythm

Chelsea 4-1 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Tammy Abraham (£7.2m), Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), Thiago Silva (£5.5m), Timo Werner (£9.4m) | David McGoldrick (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m) x2, Mateo Kovacic (£5.3m), N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) | Sander Berge (£5.0m)
  • Bonus: Ziyech x3, Abraham x2, Werner x1

Chelsea came from behind to beat Sheffield United with a performance that ticked many a Fantasy box.

All four of the home side’s goals involved summer signings and the victory underlined the impression that coach Frank Lampard is finally finding the right balance in his team, from Abraham to Ziyech.

Double Bubble

One of Lampard’s key moves has been to find room for both Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) and Timo Werner (£9.4m) in the starting XI.

Saturday’s result meant Chelsea have won three games and drawn one, scoring 14 goals and conceding four, when the duo start together in the league.

Lampard talked about the pair after the midweek win over Rennes in the Champions League in which they also both started (and scored):

When we brought in players in attacking areas we brought in players who are versatile in their nature, Timo playing on the left for instance. The qualities Tammy can bring to the team are never lost on me.

Werner’s ownership has been yo-yoing this season, with the trend upward at present. He’s now in 23.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads, with 25,000+ new managers buying into him ahead of the international break.

The 2.2%-owned Abraham remains the differential pick of the two, which is hardly surprising when he’s started just the four games to Werner’s eight in the league this season. But he’s produced  two goals and two assists from those matches.

And the pair’s threat is so strong that Lampard could be tempted to view them both, and not just Werner, as nailed-on starters.

Midfield Merriment

Maximum bonus points and a double-digit haul went to Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m) – for the second straight Gameweek.

He’s now amassed 25 points from his first two starts in the league and his ownership is ballooning.

He went from 114,819 to 624,213 FPL managers on the strength of his goal and assist against Burnley in Gameweek 7 and he’s already top of the transfers in for Gameweek 9 thanks to his brace of assists against Sheffield United.

Small wonder that Lampard was gushing in his post-match praise:

He exudes confidences in how much he wants to receive the ball and be the important player. He also has great work ethic so he is a complete player. He’s been a big plus and I expect there is a lot more to come from him.

It’s only been two full games, but there’s a strong sense that it is Ziyech, and not the self-isolating Kai Havertz (£8.3m), who could be the key player when it comes to Lampard finding the right balance in his team:

The balance of the team felt great. There were so many good things in what we were creating, we scored two goals from set pieces. I don’t want to get too carried away but I’m happy.

Not getting carried away should be the theme for FPL bosses as well because Chelsea’s next six matches are probably not as easy as they might appear on FPL’s Fixture Difficulty Rating.

A Gameweek 10 visit from Spurs and games against an obdurate Wolves and this season’s surprise package West Ham all look tricky, but Ziyech is making an incredibly strong case for inclusion anyway.

Defenders On The Attack

The second most-bought defender ahead of Gameweek 8 was Chilwell, who scored his second goal in three home matches.

That appeased the 324,298 new owners who were hoping for a fourth clean sheet in the last five league fixtures from Chelsea.

Considerably fewer managers enjoyed Thiago Silva‘s (£5.5m) first attacking return for the Blues, but those goals underlined the potency of Lampard’s defenders.

The most popular defensive transfer for the Gameweek was Kurt Zouma (£5.3m), who was brought in by more than half a million managers on the back of the Blues’ new-found defensive stability and the centre-half’s three goals this season.

Thanks to Silva’s strike, all four of Lampard’s regular backline have now scored.

Zouma leads the way for goals among defenders and Chilwell is second (he also has two assists), while Reece James (£5.0m) is the other to have found the net, with an assist to his name from his six starts as well.

Small wonder that three of that back four are now in the top 10 for both points and ownership among FPL defenders, with Thiago (3.1%) the only outlier (and differential).

Sheffield Of Bad Dreams

One point from eight matches, just four goals scored and zero clean sheets kept, the Blades are the bluntest of weapons at the moment.

Manager Chris Wilder was as honest as ever with his assessment of his team:

At times my teams are naive. It’s irrelevant. We have given away some poor goals. I think we have to look at ourselves.

It’s fair to say few Fantasy managers are looking at his players.

David McGoldrick‘s (£5.3m) second strike of the season meant he’s now been involved in half of the side’s goals.

But his strike partner, and the Blades’ most popular asset in FPL, Rhian Brewster (£4.5m and 6.7%), had a wretched time of it at Stamford Bridge.

Brewster’s undoubted promise, and cheap price tag, has persuaded a decent chunk of FPL managers to have him as their third striker.

Based on his complete non-involvement on Saturday, even at £4.5m he’s a waste of money.

As for the Blades as a team, the 431 shots they conceded last season was bettered by only seven teams. This year’s total – 120 – is the league’s second worst.

Never a team to create many chances, unless they can sort out their defensive issues, their players will remain a major Fantasy no-no.

Chelsea XI (4-3-2-1): Mendy; James, Zouma, Silva, Chilwell; Kante, Kovacic (Jorginho 71′), Mount; Werner (Giroud 87′), Ziyech; Abraham.

Sheffield United XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Baldock, Stevens, Basham, Egan; Lundstram, Berge, Lowe, Norwood (Osborn 62′); McGoldrick, Brewster (McBurnie 63′).

Antonio for me is a luxury player, he is so injury prone you get him in knowing he's a transfer waiting to happen. If you have other issues in your team then id avoid until everything is settled.

Injury record is more important this season as they are up 40%. I suspect the CL and Europa teams will be hit the hardest. If so their team performances will be affected. We have already seem how this has affected City and output of their top FPL players like Sterling and KDB. Anyone saying injurys are not a concern is being ignorant to the fact.

Avoiding injury prone players this yesr is likely to be a strategy for some managers.

I'm between Antonio or Bamford as my replacement for Wilson if he's injured. Antonio's injury record is certainly an issue!

Man City goal difference is 1, that's insanely low for one of the most attacking teams in the league. That alone tells you City have problems.

Fair enough. Some valid points about injuries this year and I think it's a shrewd strategy.

I will still be moving for Antonio though (at some point) and just hoping he can soldier through.

What a cracking player he was to own at the back end of last season. Turned my awful season into a simply bad one. I filled with nostalgia at the thought of owning him once again

Spot on. Add positive Covid-19 tests into the mix and we are going to have to burn through transfers this season anyway, without making the problem worse by getting injury-prone players.

Will Ziyech be better or worse option when Havertz and Pulisic back?

I don’t see his position being under threat tbh. Maybe CHO will come in every now and then to give him a rest.

Better. Havertz loves ghosting into the box, and Ziyech is the type to find him

Pulisic knows how to get on the end of his diagonal passes too

Werner's movement is better than Tammy's so he can get on the end of stuff in the box better as the lone striker

Then nothing really changes about how Ziyech is already playing, so that stays too

Better one would think. More options to pass to, more clever players on the pitch to find him with passes and assists.

We won't know as Frank doesn't know his best team. However those are top players so they will likely have an impact on Ziyechs points.

21 goals and 17 assists for Ajax in 2018/19 (Eredivisie and CL).
9 goals and 12 assists in 2019/20 (in tho-thirds the number of games).

He's not just an assister. Was my first pick from Chelsea pre-season before his injury.

If he goes red, I'll be selling in a heartbeat.

      McCarthy
      Chilwell / bellerin / Dallas
      Salah / Fernandes / soucek / ziyech
      Kane / Watkins / Vardy

      Button / Bissouma / Justin / Mitchell

Great players but its the structure which may leave you inflexible moving forward, i'd be tempted to get a 8m+ striker in their, Vardy, Werner, Martial, Jesus, Rich etc

Also if you have Mendy, who is a great pick, i would save £ and go for a non playing GK at 4.0

Strujik likely to be dropped once Phillips is back

I have had Werner and Jimenez up top all season and just don't think their prices justify their output when there's a lot better value in cheaper attackers. Hoping to get the big hitters in midfield that i can just set and forget rather than chop and change each week

      So here's my predicament:

I own Maupay and decided the match against Burnley was last chance saloon for him. He blanked and is now priority #1 on the chopping block.

My preferred replacement (by far) is Watkins from Villa. However, the issue is that I already have three Villa players: Martinez/Steer/Grealish (silly to have Steer, I know).

I have two free transfers so my question really is: would it be worth using one of them on getting rid of Steer so that I can replace Maupay with Watkins?

The only other replacement I would consider for Maupay is Antonio, and he's currently injured....

The best decision I made on WC was to remove Steer.

Yes, that's how sh**e my WC was.

What's wrong with Bamford? Already own him?

It's not silly to have Steer. If something happens to Mart, Steer is the most likely to play instead. That's why you got him, isn't it? A guaranteed keeper combo for a good defence at a low price

Now that you want to make the switch, and consider Watkins the priority, it's worth making the switch for free

          Haven't Villa got Heaton though?

I think he's injured right now, but he'll be back at some point and then Steer is as useless as a chocolate fire guard

Yes, Steer becomes useless when Heaton returns, which is still a while from now. So Steer is still Mart's backup. And at the time you most likely got him, Heaton was still far off a return and triple Villa was far off people's thoughts/plans

It's okay to sell now, but it's not silly to have gotten him

        No.

I wouldn't get Watkins personally. He won't score points against sides that sit back.

What makes you think that? On penalties too and with Grealish floating around oppositions final thirds in games where they sit back - it's a real possibilty of getting goals that way.

I will hold my WC but plan to ditch Saiss and Son, i'll have 16.2 to spend, best combo?

      A) Cancelo and Bruno
      B) Chillwel and Rashford
      C) Cancelo and Ziyech (leaves money to improve my 11th attacker slot, Lookman or Brewster up)
      D) Target and KDB

      Mendy
      Bellerin KWP XXXX
      Sterling Salah Grealish Lookman XXXX
      DCL Werner

      Button Dallas Mitchell Brewster

All good options to be honest. It all depends on your mindset I think.

Do you want to try to get ahead of the curve? If so, A/C/D are solid choices.

If playing safer, B is the one.

Yeah less keen on B, like you, if Antonio is back, then C looks great with a hit maybe to Brewter to Antonio. Even without Antonio, a hit for lookman to Zaha or Brewster to Watkins seems a fairly good hit all considering

      Thoughts on plan below:

Son to Bruno, followed by Reguilon Kane to Cancelo Vardy the week after?

      2FTs, 1.6ITB

      Martinez
      Robo/Reguilon/Chilwell
      Salah/Son/Hamez/Grealish
      Kane/DCL/Bamford

        DCL Bamford Maupay

        1 FT 0.5itb. No WC

        Issues:
        1. Sterling, Robbo, Maupay,Son, JRod.
        2. Can't get in Grealish or Watkins due to triple villa already.

Sacrifice Konsa so that you can bring in Watkins for Maupay

Sterling’s fixtures about to change and so not the worst hold

Robbo and Son out for Bruno and Chillwell if you have enough?

In your situation I would forget about Sterling (amazing upcoming fixtures... straight swap for KdB if necessary) and JRod (Great fixtures, Rich back) and Son (quality player regardless of fixtures)

Come back and look at your team in 2 weeks when you might have other fires to fight

In your shoes I'd probably get shot of steer and monitor how villa go. If they haul again your decision is made for the following weeks move/s, if they blank it buys you time to examine other parts of your team

Maybe just hold your nerve, roll the transfer and then make 3-4 transfers the following week. There's a lot of fixture swings that week to take advantage of and if you leave it to the last minute you'll avoid any injuries in the meantime

Yeah that could be the best play.
Keeping calm at 3m OR and holding a transfer when Bruno/Ziyech are screaming to be bought is another thing though.
                Thanks for your suggestion.

Should i do Son, Podence -> Ziyech, Grealish (-4)?

        Martinez
        Сhilwell, Lamptey, Cresswell
        Salah (C), Son, Bruno, Bowen
        Kane, DCL, Bamford

        Forster, Podence, Mitchell, Dunne
        1FT, 1.0 ITB

Other option is save FT to do Kane, Son -> Jesus, KdB after GW 9

            Son is 1m less FWIW

Unless you are keeping them for the season, or bringing them back soon, it’s better to realise the profits as prices will inevitably fall

I think that if i keep Kane for the ManCity game then the only tough game is Chelsea.Arsenal at home and Palace away are good games. The problem is that there are other teams with much better fixtures and the profits as you said could be huge.

            Kane, DCL, Bamford

            Salah, KDB, Grealish, Bruno, Ziyech
