Fernandes climbs above Salah in FPL points table as Cavani edges closer to start

Southampton 2-3 Manchester United

  • Goals: Jan Bednarek (£4.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m) | Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m), Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) x2
  • Assists: Ward-Prowse, Moussa Djenepo (£5.4m) | Cavani, Fernandes, Marcus Rashford (£9.5m)
  • Bonus: Cavani x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Bednarek x1

A stunning second-half comeback won Manchester United the points at Southampton as Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) announced himself as a Fantasy prospect in spectacular style.

The Uruguayan veteran scored two goals and set up another after replacing the ineffectual Mason Greenwood (£7.1m) at half-time.

Other than that, it was Fantasy Premier League (FPL) business as usual at St Mary’s, with more set-piece joy for Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m) and yet another away day haul from Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m).

Saints Alive – For Half A Game

Southampton led 2-0 at the interval as Ward-Prowse continued his blistering recent form with a fourth goal and second assist since Gameweek 6.

Two bonus points meant it was also a third double-digit score in those five starts and the England international is currently in the top ten FPL midfielders – and the cheapest to make that list.

His goal against United, from a free-kick, shortened David de Gea‘s (£5.4m) involvement in the match as the keeper collided with the post in trying to keep out Ward-Prowse’s pin-point effort.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn’t overly concerned about the Spaniard post-match, probably helped by the fact that Dean Henderson (£5.3m) is an excellent understudy:

A knock just above the knee, so hopefully he’ll be okay for Wednesday, but we don’t know. Let’s have a little scan or check tomorrow, but Dean came on and looked very assured.

The other keeper in action at St Mary’s, Alex McCarthy (£4.6m), was even more assured, producing fine saves to deny Greenwood, Fernandes and Marcus Rashford (£9.5m).

His 20.5% ownership did not enjoy a fourth straight home clean sheet, however, as United turned things round after the break.

Change Is Good

Solskjaer often gives the impression that he’s a conservative manager, but he made some big calls both before and during Sunday’s game.

He handed starts to Greenwood and Donny van de Beek (£6.7m) and the latter again impressed in the balanced role that caught the eye in the Champions League last week.

That role – a mix of defensive shield and midfield conduit – allows Fernandes further attacking freedom, which does dampen the Dutchman’s Fantasy appeal.

The same cannot be said of Cavani.

Two goals and an assist from 45 stellar minutes positively oozes FPL potential as Solskjaer’s decision to bring the striker on at half-time changed the game.

Small surprise, then, that the United manager was glowing in his praise for the striker:

On the training pitch, in the dressing room and during meal times, how meticulous he is. He is one of the best because of his experience and qualities, that movement. He is one of the best movers you can see. He can peel off the shoulder, he can get in front of you, he can pin you. He wants to be in between the two posts, which I love.

A Foil For Fernandes?

Despite all that love, Solskjaer preferred to start Greenwood ahead of Cavani because the youngster ‘needed the minutes’. And there is also the matter of Anthony Martial (£8.7m), who missed the match through illness.

But United’s almost unhealthy reliance on Fernandes – he’s been involved in 11 of the team’s 16 league goals this season – underlines just how important Cavani could become.

In just 127 minutes of action, he now has more goals (three) than Rashford (two) and Martial (zero) have managed from 1,175 minutes of collective toil up front.

This season’s crazy schedule will demand rotation – particularly around Christmas – but Cavani is beginning to look like a starter, not an impact sub.

If he can take some of the strain off Fernandes, who made it three straight double-digit returns and a fourth consecutive haul on the road, both could flourish.

Whether the pair can combine so well at Old Trafford against far deeper-lying teams than Southampton will be the key, however.

Fixtures Over Form

One thing in the pair’s favour could be United’s short-term schedule.

They’re back on their beloved road, at West Ham, in Gameweek 11 and will also travel to Sheffield United before Christmas.

And their wretched home form – just one win from five attempts – might actually be helped by the arrival of Manchester City and Leeds over the next four Gameweeks as neither side is likely to sit back and frustrate Solskjaer’s side.

Ings Can Maybe Get Better

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl spoke ahead of Gameweek 10 about Danny Ings (£8.3m) maybe being available for the Brighton trip and that could prove to be a nice tonic for his troops:

We had gone seven games unbeaten before now, it’s a good run. And now we’ll need to start another run.

Southampton’s schedule offers little prospect of that, with decent fixtures – Brighton and Sheffield United next and a trip to Fulham – offset by tough home matches with Man City and Liverpool.

Ings would certainly boost the side’s attacking threat, while their defenders are relatively cheap and two, Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.6m and 12.1%) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m and 10.1%), are well-owned.

But their backline is a curious beast this season.

The four clean sheets they’ve kept the second-best record in the league and yet they’ve conceded at least three goals in four separate matches.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Walker-Peters (N’Lundulu 90+4), Vestergaard, Bednarek, Bertrand; Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong (Diallo 90), Djenepo (Long 72); Walcott, Adams.

Manchester United XI (4-3-1-2): De Gea (Henderson 45); Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles (Williams 84); Fred, McTominay, van de Beek; Fernandes; Rashford, Greenwood (Cavani 45).

    Hi guys, how’s it going?

Still got five players, including Vardy (c), to play tonight but looking ahead to next GW...

I was thinking of upgrading Struijk to KWP and playing him ahead of Coufal but then City woke up so I’m thinking of doing a bit of that “upside chasing” over the next couple of weeks.

So how about Salah to KDB this week and then back to Salah a week after? And just play Coufal?

(Will wait until closer to deadline before doing any moves)

    1FT 1.7 ITB
    Martinez
    Zouma Justin Coufal
    Salah Son Bruno Grealish
    Vardy DCL Bamford

    Steer Mitchell Reed Struijk

    Thanks!

Haha, my tongue was in cheek - hard to portray with just a couple of inverted commas! Thanks though - I think the potential is better than the defensive move.

I like the Salah KdB hokey cokey

£23.5m to own both is unsustainable this year with incredible captain choices at 10.5m.

Well put. You just have to make peace with the fact you can’t have them all. And the ceiling for that Hokey Cokey is much higher than Coufal / KWP

But what do you do in GW13? Bring back KDB again for the WBA match?

This could earn you some points for sure. What I personally think is 3 transfers elsewhere for making your team better could earn you more.

Yeah, that’s the thing. I’ve taken -4 past couple of weeks and made net gains. Not usually keen on hits but been willing to take risks this season after a terrible start. So need to weigh that up.

And the “upside chasing” reference was tongue-in-cheek! I know how much it winds some up - I don’t think irony comes across that well in writing. Cheers!

That's the thing, both KdB and Salah are basically fine in any match. Salah in particular. So you just use your transfers to tend to your team and in any week that you don't need your transfer for anyone else, that hokey cokey (with maybe Salah as default) is waiting for you

With Bruno and Kane both burst onto the scene as Captain options KdB simply isn't even close to essential now. 200-250 at 11.5 now represents an unnecessary extra 1m spent out

All good points, well made. The spread of options this season at those prices makes these decisions particularly nuanced. I’ll leave it for now and consider. Thanks

They are exactly the moves i've bee toying with...

      Gw11 - Salah (wol) > KDB (FUL)
      Gw12 - KDB (mun) > Salah (ful)
Gw13 - Vardy (EVE) + Rodriguez (lei) > Wilson (lee) + KDB (WBA)

Only issue is price rises might screw me out of the gw13 move!

yep that works money wise, but i'm not convinced on taking out kane and ziyech. Ziyech is on thin ice for me but thinking i might do:

          Mane > KDB
          Bellerin > Dias

then next week probably wildcard and get Salah in

Getting rid of Ziyech makes a lot of sense. The fixtures aren't that great, KdB should crush him on points.

Kane out is again fixture and money driven. I would not lose Mane.

Yeah true on Ziyech, just not convinced moving on Kane is the way to facilitate it. Kane for me seems like one of those you keep regardless of fixtures

will have a think, cheers for the feedback

Hmm... Kane has had 1 attempt on goal in the past 2 matches. One. Paying premium for him right now seems a bit silly to me. But this was the week to get rid I guess since he has ARS and cry next two which should offer up a lot more chances.

                  This is a great point.

Watched the game yesterday and he drops so deep to bring others in to the game.

Then he's miles away from the Spurs attackers once they are near goal.

He's had some great returns this season (plus he's on pens), but I just don't think he's going to be an out and out Striker anymore.

I think if you want Spurs coverage, Son is the answer.

        Ok, team structure wise....

Defence is fine, but that midfield is understandably weakened by having Kane and Vardy.
Midfield targets are obvious - KDB, Salah, Jota
        I'd want to either
        - Soucek to Jota if I want to keep kane
        - Salah in for Mane (bit sideways)
        - Downgrade Kane or Vardy and upgrade Ziyech to KDB

i could do Soucek, Mane & Bellerin > Jota, KDB & 4.5m defender.

or alternatively (and this would be with the full intention of wildcard next week) i could do

            Bellerin > Phillips
            Ziyech > KDB
            Kane > Jesus

one week spin on Jesus hoping he catches Fulham

THIS!!!!! with your wildcard in hand, I love this option.... its Fulham..... if they look rubbish again vs Leicester tonight (which I hope they are with Vardy Captain), target the hell out of them....

Its aggressive move, saves you a hit, maximises City vs Fulham point potential. Then wildcard you can have anyone you want....

I just don't think you can discount Kane this season, especially in a NLD (and even more so if Luiz plays...).

That said, if you aren't going to captain Kane for the next few and don't have value tied up, you can always bring him back.

Klopp isn't getting much sympathy in the papers this morning over his outburst at the weekend and rightly so in my opinion.

Liverpool can't have their cake and eat it: with big TV money for domestic and European fixtures comes the necessity to play matches at awkward times. When BT bid for their contract and get the prime slot at Saturday half 12, they aren't going to choose to screen Palace Newcastle, are they? They couldn't have chosen Chelsea Spurs because Spurs had played on Thursday.

He could equally have criticised UEFA for insisting on having fixtures across two days in the Champions League making things more difficult domestically, but I note UEFA rarely take any flak because that's where the real big money is for these elite clubs.

If he pulls the trick of sending out the U19s again in the FA Cup I hope the FA fine Liverpool for bringing the competition in disrepute.

Also his argument that 'with a 5th sub I'd have taken Robertson off.' If Robertson is tired, why doesn't he rest him for the left back they never use?

          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I believe his argument was that if he takes Robbo off early he'll have no more subs left in case another player gets injured, which of course has been a very frequent occurrence for Liverpool his season.

The argument makes sense for Klopp.

It was a luxury 'resting' sub to take off Robbo that he otherwise could not afford.

Does that not reflect Wilder's point though? That it's a luxury for bigger squads?

Maybe they should just meet in the middle at 4 subs. Or add concussion subs.

Interesting that Man City, one of the main advocates of five subs, have only used their full sub allocation twice so far and on two occasions have only used one sub.

Not sure Fernandes (c) is going to match KDB/Salah next GW.

The mega hauls of previous seasons have already been repeated under Jose...
He's gotten 21 points and then 16 points x2 this season.

But it's not a bad time to get rid for Salah, KdB or Fernandes all of which I think will outscore him.

I think they could play very differently against Arsenal.

Reticent to sail literally the most nailed-on player in the league (Maguire aside?) ahead of Xmas.

Kane is a dream come true this season at that price and in this system/management. Getting rid is very short sighted imo, not least in a season where most of your transfers will get hoovered up stopping the rest of your squad falling to bits.

Kane and Bruno are sent from heaven for this. 9 man game

Best way to bring in KDB with 1ft and 2 itb?

        A) Kane + Soucek > KDB + Adams (-4)

I also want the KDB, Salah and Bruno midfield, so I'm doing Cancelo to Walker in GW11 and then Jesus and Grealish to Salah and Brewster in GW12. I'd say you'd want a guaranteed City starter in defense for the Fulham match and if you captain Salah in GW12, the hit feels justified

Amusing to recall that I wondered, during preseason, if at this time double or even triple Chelsea offense would be template. Instead, Chilwell has cemented a place in most people's teams and at 5.1M James is rising fast behind him.

I have Zouma + James and they don't look like they're going anywhere. While Chelsea are looking this good defensively and with such cheap defensive options, doubling up seems to make perfect sense.

Yes. Anything can happen in this game. No one knows for sure.

                  Worth a hit ?

                  Yay or nay ?

I'd say yes if you don't want to hold Son.

I'm thinking of ditching Kane for the extra money soon and keeping Son for now.

But it's the midfield where the picks are.

I feel neto is a better option than podence. Was playing more central last night and looked good there. Bruno is a great option, but with son and spurs current form i think he is hard to replace. Who is your other premium midfielder?

Son and Jrod have good fixtures this week.

If you don't have any Man City midfielders, which would you bring in for the Fulham game?

Not that high. 104m. I bought Grealish and dcl at 7m though. And had bruno from start and got chilwell early so this is easy for me to get. Kilman is my only bench option though. And he didn't start so its kinda annoying

                          Advice please.

Best fix, for Jimi and Rodriguez.

                          Bring in:

                          A) Wilson and Mahrez

                          B) Bruno and 5.2 fodder?

Team value definitely the big factor now with everyone trying to fit in their Bruno, KDB, Salah and Vardy/Kane ?

I am in a tough spot personally, mainly due to starting from GW2 this season and then not getting onboard the early Everton hype train, also missed out on Son and Kane bumper hauls.

KdB is basically a luxury now that we have an abundance of Captain choices. Salah remains more desirable because he's proved what he does year after year and also has pens now. Team value obviously helps but imo it's not people fitting in the max amount of premiums that are going to do well, it's people who pick the right combination and number of premiums and use their team value to good effect in the rest of the squad

Has KDB not also proved what he's done year after year and now has pens?

Please don't fall into the team value trap.
You need to maximise your points, not TV.
TV and points are not correlated!

I'm not falling into the trap but I suppose all these premium mid options every season make me think of simpler times, when all you had to do was get Ramsey, Sigurdsson and you were set for the season in terms of midfield as rest all options were a lotto basically.
