Away day specialist Bamford gets home goal but set-piece issues remain for Leeds

LEEDS 5-2 NEWCASTLE

  • Goals: Patrick Bamford (£6.3m), Rodrigo (£5.7m), Stuart Dallas (£4.6m), Ezgjan Alioski (£4.4m), Jack Harrison (£5.4m)| Jeff Hendrick (£4.7m), Ciaran Clark (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Rodrigo, Harrison, Mateusz Klich (£5.5m), Pablo Hernandez (£5.7m) x2 | Callum Wilson (£6.6m), Ryan Fraser (£5.6m)
  • Bonus: Rodrigo x3, Harrison x2, Alioski x1

PAT THE TAKER

Patrick Bamford (£6.3m) scored his ninth goal of the season in Gameweek 13 as Leeds put Newcastle to the sword at Elland Road.

The striker scored the first of Leeds’ five goals, equalising in the first half after Jeff Hendrick (£4.7m) had wiped out the Whites’ clean sheet from a Callum Wilson (£6.6m) flick-on following a Ryan Fraser (£5.6m) cross.

After Rodrigo (£5.7m) headed a Raphinha (£5.4m) ball over Karl Darlow (£5.0m) onto the Newcastle crossbar, Bamford had the simplest of tasks to head home.

Bamford’s goal on Wednesday was only his second at home all season but it has been coming for several weeks. Considering that seven of his strikes have come on the road, trips to West Bromwich Albion and even Manchester United and Spurs between now and Gameweek 17 are sure to increase interest in the 40.7%-owned asset.

DALLAS BUYERS’ CLUB

Operating at right-back, Stuart Dallas (£4.6m) finally rewarded those who had shown faith in attacking abilities in Gameweek 13.

It was the Northern Ireland international who stole in at the far post to head home a Mateusz Klich (£5.5m) cross which put Leeds 3-2 up.

Luke Ayling (£4.5m) owners may feel slightly hard-done-by as Dallas scored from the position normally taken up by the Englishman, recent makeshift arrangements made at the back thanks to injuries to centre-backs Robin Koch (£4.5m) and Diego Llorente (£4.4m).

Ayling once again partnered Liam Cooper (£4.4m) at centre-back, with left-back Ezgjan Alioski (£4.4m) also getting on the scoresheets for Leeds’ fourth.

SET-PIECE BY PIECE

Clark heads past Illan Meslier from a corner

With the sides having gone in at the interval on level terms at 1-1, Rodrigo coolly converted a Jack Harrison (£5.4m) cross before Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) became the latest Premier League centre-back to expose Leeds’ deficiencies at set-pieces.

The Irish defender beat Ayling in the air to head past Illan Meslier (£4.6m) from a Fraser corner.

Before kick-off, Bielsa said on his team’s set-piece problem:

“The set-pieces are summed up by one of their players going up against one of our players. We have to beat them in this manner, in this way.” – Marcelo Bielsa

After the game, the Leeds manager remarked:

“We’re constantly trying to improve aerially – the organisation of the team will continue to do this.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Considering that Leeds are still struggling with set-plays, owners of Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) could be licking their lips ahead of a Gameweek 14 meeting with the Whites at Old Trafford.

However, the concession from a Newcastle corner was just a blip on the radar of an otherwise impressive Leeds performance.

“I’m happy because it was a good performance, especially offensively because we were constantly creating chances. In the first half we weren’t very efficient but we were more so in the second half. The construction of the attack depends a lot on the individuality of the players.” – Marcelo Bielsa

MAGPIES’ WINGS CLIPPED

Harrison strikes a stunner past Darlow

Leeds substitute Pablo Hernandez (£5.7m) picked up two assists on his return from injury, first finding Alioski in the area as Leeds broke on Newcastle before setting Harrison free for a stunning fifth.

“It was a spur of the moment thing. I didn’t think about it too much. I was fortunate to get it in in the end. We’re always trying to be intense and play until the final whistle.” – Jack Harrison

Though the Magpies profited from Leeds’ set-piece issues, they managed to concede two goals in counter-attacks while searching for equalisers at dead-ball situations.

Knowing they are weak to such a scenario could boost interest in Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) or Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m) for Gameweek 14, considering Fulham have been making progress in transitional phases of matches over the last few weeks.

And, of course, Newcastle face Manchester City (away) and Liverpool (home) in the two matches after that.

“I think simply we’ve given three poor goals away in the last ten minutes. I know Leeds caused us problems all evening but we showed a certain resilience and for me always looked a threat the other way. Unfortunately we’ve not defended well enough.” – Steve Bruce

While Newcastle boss Bruce knows his team’s naivety went punished in the final part of the game, Leeds had racked up 20 attempts on goal by 76 minutes.

COSTA LIVING

Marcelo Bielsa

Harrison and fellow winger Raphinha, who topped the shots count (seven) at Elland Road, may be more secure in their positions after former first-choice wide-man Helder Costa (£5.3m) was left out of Bielsa’s matchday 18. Following the game, the Leeds boss said of the Portuguese winger:

“No, no injury.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Bruce, meanwhile, stuck to his guns on Newcastle’s showing despite allowing Leeds 25 shots as the Whites racked up big ‘expected goals’ numbers.

“Not going to say that [the COVID-19 situation is to blame]. Up until the last twelve minutes or so I thought we gave as good as we got. We’ve been punished and given away bad goals. We’ve gifted them goals at the end which was unacceptable.” – Steve Bruce

Finally, Klich, team-mate Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) and Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden (£4.8m) all picked up their fourth bookings of the campaign in Gameweek 13. Each player will need to avoid another yellow card before their club’s 20th league fixture in order to dodge a one-match ban.

Leeds United XI (4-1-4-1): Meslier; Alioski, Cooper, Ayling, Dallas; Phillips; Harrison, Klich (Shackleton 89′), Rodrigo (Hernandez 81′), Raphinha; Bamford (Roberts 83′).

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Lewis, Clark, Fernandez, J Murphy; Fraser (Almiron 75′), S Longstaff, Hayden, Hendrick (Krafth 62′); Joelinton (Gayle 74′), C Wilson.

Help me spend a transfer, no obvious moves

    McCarthy Forster
    Targett Dias Lewis Chilwell Coufal
    KDB Mo Grealish Son Soucek
    Ings DCL Bamford

    2ft and 0itb

Only can think of target to Taylor as Brunel fixtures are good between now and the double and gives me another doubler as no first WC

Yes overlooking. 5.7m is a fantastic price. He's actually beating Bamford over the last 2 games statistically in almost every category (2 game sample size though...)

Penalties are great for Klich. xG non-penalty is very low though. I think Raphinha or Harrison are very interesting picks too. So much options in that Leeds team!

Isn’t rodrigo a forward in fpl?

He plays in midfield for Leeds, behind Bamford. I prefer Bamford & in midfield I prefer Klich

Rodrigo in the last 4 has more touches in the final third than Bamford though, with much less game time.

                  3 years, 4 months ago

Fair enough. If you don’t have Bamford already then maybe Rodrigo is the way to go but I wouldn’t double up or ditch Bamford.

Rodrigo is actually a good option

Also, at the moment you have 9 players playing in blank gw. So think about that if you are thinking about chips or transfer strategy from that perspective. In any case I won't change a perfectly good team just for double gameweek so many weeks in advance.

Curtis Jones £4.4, after his recent performances for Liverpool i think it´s his place to lose now. They are going to ease Thiago back once fit and Naby Keita seems to pick up a injury just by entering the pitch. Jones looks seriously impressive and is bound to score or assist soon.

What to do with this? (bar no suspensions and injuries of course)

          Martinez (Forster)
          Lamptey Justin Zouma (KWP Mitchell)
          Salah KdB Bruno Son Grealish
          Watkins DCL (Brewster)

0,1m in bank and 2FT. My only idea is to switch Justin/Lamptey and Mitchell to two playing 4,3-4,5m defenders but doesn't feel good to burn two transfers for that.

          Thoughts?

Nothing wrong with Son captain, he has a very good record against leicester.

Record against a given team is probably the most telling underlying stat for a forward. Only found out last night that DCL hasnt scored yet against Leic and run continued last night. Its an influential stat.

Yep, I check all past history when making captain choices. Sometimes it can be as simple as superstition, players just believe they will score against a team they always score against and therefore do. Or the tactics always match up favorably. Tottenham and Leicester have historically had some crazy games, a 6-1, and 5-4, totally nuts. Vardy also has a good record and so does Kane

Possible I'll need to downgrade martinez to find an extra 0.1m/0.2m in GW16. Who is the best 4.6/4.5 goalkeeper option from GW16 onwards?

Need to do some transfers for GW15 and beyond (with double GW in mind too but not the main consideration ) which ones is the better swap:

          A) Watkins and Grealish > Son and Ings
          B) Chillwell and Watkins > Kane and Dier

I honestly really dislike the bench boost chip and would rather they ditched it from the game. It just handicaps your squad for the chance of rolling the dice for a few extra returns which may not even materialise. For example using transfers to get say Dallas (BHA,SOU) and Johnstone (wol, wha) to sit on the bench for extra points. When compared to say Dias (CRY) and Dier (shu), who have very good good fixtures leading up to, and very good single GW fixtures, could easily get 6pts each. Dallas and Johnstone may end up with just 4pts each, plus then that money is sat on your bench costing you another 2 transfers in the future. I think i'm just going to carry on as normal, make moves that make sense form and fixture wise and use and BB and be done with it, be glad to get rid of it..!

Only way to use BB is with a WC. Its worked for me every season since the introduction of the chips and im doing it again

But this again is the problem. The WC is such a hugely valuable chip and I don't want to waste it, in order to gain 2 or 3 extra players for 1 week when a balanced team could easily match. In my past years playing I've always had massive scores in DGWs with a BB but still the actual points off the bench usually add up to around 10-15. Not that much I dont think

However, if you have beefed up your bench to protect against rotation and Covid over the busy Christmas/New Year period, you could be well placed for a bench boost in DGW19.

True, theres a balance that works. But say getting a backup GK, that will be needed in 0.0001% chance, seems a total waste because then those funds sit there until you transfer them out again.

It's a bit higher than that given that it has already happened to Martinez, Darlow, Pope, Mendy, De Gea, Ryan (twice), Pickford (twice), and Alisson (three times), but I agree there is a balance to be struck.

I disagree. TC gives you one extra player, BB 4. And even though armband is givenbto best player, there is always risk to injury (just remember Mane last year).

Right now, I would say Robbo. Harder and harder to justify that +2m premium he had over the likes of James at start of season.

Robertson and Grealish are similarly priced. He can play 4 at the back instead of 3 at the back. Its more about who will score more points.

Difficult one. I really like Robertson too much to think impartially. I would therefore sacrifice Grealish. I just think Liverpool have a great run coming up and can keep a few clean sheets very soon.

Very tricky, choices are better in the 5-5.5m def bracket than the 5.5m midfielder bracket but Robbo better fixtures, not sure tbh

Saying that, there is another way. Neto is a sneaky mid pick that will get points regardless of fixture. I took Jota down to Neto before last nights rise and its freed up funds elsewhere. I can still get son by going Robbo> Son or Grealish>Son if i wish.

I'd just get someone around the Soucek price range and then spend the rest on your XI. My planned full playing bench for BB19 will be something like Johnstone Soucek Targett Coufal.

            chilwell 2 for jiminez

I've stumbled into a full bench just recently - Bench this week was McC, Watkins, Justin and Dallas
Have Mahrez and Stones, so Watkins and Justin come off my bench ... annoyed that I had Justin and Dallas the wrong way around, but I had Wilson

Most of the season my bench has been 4.0 GK, 2 x 4.0 Defenders plus a 4.4 mid
