FPL team guide 2021/22 – Burnley: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League season continues with this preview of Burnley.

After a tenth-place finish in 2019/20, last season was a little underwhelming for Sean Dyche’s side.

The Clarets failed to pick up three points until November, and ended the season just as poorly, losing seven of their final nine matches.

In the end, survival was confirmed by a comfortable 11 points, thanks largely to a good run of results over the festive period, but a 17th place finish indicates that the current squad needs reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

DOUBLE FIGURES FOR WOOD AGAIN

Despite that, there were positives, including the performances of Chris Wood (£7.0m).

The 29-year-old scored 12 Premier League goals as he recorded double figures for the fourth consecutive season, and finished particularly strongly, registering eight goals and three assists between Gameweeks 27 and 35.

Chris Wood’s xG shot map 2020/21

However, for large parts of the season he struggled, which isn’t a huge surprise given Burnley’s attacking numbers:

MIDFIELD FOUND WANTING

One of the key areas Sean Dyche will surely look to address this summer is the lack of goals throughout the rest of the team.

None of Wood’s team-mates managed to score more than three, with their midfielders combining for a measly three big chances over the entire season. It really was that bad.

Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) and Ashley Westwood (£5.5m) do at least provide some threat from set-pieces and crossing, and Josh Brownhill (£4.5m) may appear in a few squads simply as a budget enabler, but even the most ardent Burnley fan would struggle to get too excited about their attacking assets given their Gameweeks 1-8 fixtures:

Aside from Wood, Matěj Vydra (£5.5m) is perhaps the other forward with the most potential.

The Czech put himself back in contention with some good performances at the end of the season, with his partnership with Wood adding a new layer to Burnley’s attack.

However, he has always struggled to maintain a regular place under Dyche, and it’s hard to see that changing with Ashley Barnes (£5.5m) and Jay Rodriguez (£5.5m) also vying for starts.

DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES

Meanwhile, Burnley had a surprisingly porous defence since the turn of the year, as they kept just five clean sheets in 23 fixtures.

During that period, they conceded 35 goals, and aside from a legendary Matthew Lowton (£4.5m) haul in Double Gameweek 24, it was all a bit uninspiring.

Over the course of the season, Nick Pope’s (£5.5m) points-per-match average of 4.5 was the best among Burnley assets and the fourth-highest among Fantasy goalkeepers.

The Burnley no. 1 managed to hit clean sheet double figures (11) for the second consecutive season, with only Emiliano Martínez (£5.5m) collecting more bonus points, which does suggest he could be a useful asset at times next season, providing the fixtures fall kindly.

However, with Pope coming in as one of the more expensive goalkeepers in the game, and given last season’s defensive numbers, it does maybe feel a little pricey for what’s on offer.

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded5515th
Shots conceded57018th
Shots in the box conceded35818th
Shots on target conceded17915th
Big chances conceded7312th=
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.5615th

Some of those totals may cause concern, but they do require careful analysis.

Burnley do give up a lot of shots, that’s clear, but they also get a lot of bodies behind the ball, and it’s no surprise that centre-backs Ben Mee (£5.0m) and James Tarkowski (£5.0m) both ranked in the top three defenders for blocks last season.

The full-backs also played their part, and that could be where the real value lies.

Matthew Lowton (£4.5m) played his way back into form in the second half of the season, and a quick comparison between his performances from Gameweeks 1-22 and 23-38 highlight just how much his role developed as the campaign went on, and essentially how much more attacking he became:

Above: Matthew Lowton’s attacking numbers between Gameweeks 1-22 (left) and Gameweeks 23-38 (right). Averages per match shown.

Investing in Lowton from Gameweek 9 could be an idea, then, when the Clarets’ fixtures ease:

FINAL THOUGHTS

Wood’s consistency helped Burnley get over the line last season, but if they want to progress, he will need help on the goalscoring front in 2021/22.

Having recently been acquired by American business firm ALK Capital, the hope is now that they can add new faces to a squad that has been stretched to the limit in recent times.

The early signs are promising, with defender Nathan Collins (£4.5m) arriving from Stoke City for an initial £12m fee last month, but it’s those attacking midfield areas where additions are needed most.

As it stands, the only offensive asset worth considering is Wood, and it’s worth noting that he will return to training late as he has been named in New Zealand’s squad for the Olympics, with the final on August 7, just one week before the Premier League season kicks off.

FPL managers should probably look elsewhere to begin with, then, and reassess ahead of Gameweek 9 when their fixtures ease.

I am a bit on the fence on it to be honest. It all depends if Holgate or Holding cement a first team place. Both seem doubtful to do that at the moment?

But the logic seems sound. My advice would be keep a close eye on preseason and pick the one in which all three are likely to start. Given the fixtures I think I slightly prefer B - but it is very close.

If I remember correctly Brighton had a knack of looking like they would get a clean sheet sheet and concede that one goal. Plus Lamptey was very injury prone. And used to be taken off early as well? Great fun to own though

Plus Ben White is rumoured to be joining The Gunners

I’m still wondering how a debatable penalty is still the focus after Sterling being one of, if not the, best player in the Euros.

I guess negative press will follow Sterling around for the rest of his life.

Another point is that Kane went down very, very easily for the free kick that led to our second against Ukraine but that hasn’t been mentioned.

Sterling probably went home and said if I was white I’d be a national hero.

A former Irish FAI CEO and now Basketball chief Bernard O'Byrne got himself in serious hot water for tweeting 'Black Dives Matter'.

      https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/very-insensitive-diversity-committee-member-resigns-over-bernard-obyrnes-post-on-controversial-raheem-sterling-penalty-40635807.html

Years ago I think many would have viewed such a comment as funny and said it openly as well. However, given the current culture and climate of the world everything has become politicised and tense.

I would not be surprised if O'Byrne loses his job for it because of today's climate. I think the world has gone mad to be honest!

It just shows to me that politics and sport don't mix.

What has politics or sport got anything to with racial jokes being completely insensitive?

Because BLM is a political organisation and brings politics into football brought straight out from an American prism.
Europe is not America. People should just play football/soccer and stop this symbolism. IMO the joke was not meant to be racial but funny. However in today's climate people seek 'outrage'.
Zaha, Les Ferdinand and John Barnes have all pointed out that this BLM taking a knee stuff

          1) Is demeaning to black people (Zaha refuses to kneel)
          2) It becomes background noise people going through the motions no meaning to it (Les Ferdinand)
          3) It achieves nothing in reality (John Barnes)

I firmly believe in a decades time people will be laughing at all this malarkey.

Black lives matters is a political movement raising awareness of systimatic racism within governmental systems.

            Racism is not political.

Black dives matters is an insensitive racist joke because the word black is added to make diving a race issue. Its not, we can all name a lot of players from every race who dive.

            Nothing political in this

              • 14 Years

Of course it is political because

              1) BLM is a political orgnisation it takes the mick out of them
              2) It takes the mick at Sterling's moralising with said political organisation BLM - while cheating/diving on the pitch. Waiting for contact or whatever you wish to call it.

However, if you were of a certain 'agenda' you could view it as racist because of the current world climate and how there was no clarification in the tweet.

I would say O'Byrne will likely lose his job for it which is the way of the world now.

The issue is that he’s made a joke which is partly dependent upon the colour of Sterling’s skin.

Is it a clever play on words? Yes. Should he lose his job? I don’t think he should. Is he a total t**t for making the joke which simply reinforces the racism directly towards Sterling? Absolutely.

Is Shaw necessarily the better choice than AWB - especially from week 1?

As a Palace fan I've been pleasantly surprised at how he's improved. There's been a fairly steady uptick in AWB attacking returns at OT and he managed 2 goals and 5 assists to Shaw's 1 goal and 5 assists last season. Played more minutes of course but I'm not seeing that as a bad thing!

This is partly a week 1 play of course with marginal doubts about Shaw (and Maguire come to that) post Euros but seems valid.

I agree I currently like Wan to start the season due to Shaw being still involved in the Euros. I also feel Wan could get more room to cross with Sancho in the side?

      Perhaps that’s naive.

I don't think he is at his best when crossing, but the way he was used changed towards the end of the season. He gave short passes and even run towards goal trying to score sometimes after them. Tbh I have zero idea whether this will continue with Sancho or not.

I believe both are good picks. I think I'll want Shaw and Lamptey can play gw 1 as my first sub. The biggest question for me is whether to have AWB or Stones. Atm I am considering to start with AWB as safer option since I am not happy to have both Stones and Shaw gw 1. Pep probably also needs to be monitored. Every man and his dog is going to have Shaw, so to make ground with MU AWB is safest option for third spot.

124 Points last season with 1 goal and five assists. His best season so far.

If I remember from last season AWB was frustrating to own, missed out on so many assists. Looked threatening but on the other side Shaw seemed to hoover up the points.
Like another poster said I am benching Shaw gw1. Mainly because I think Leeds will likely score and maybe could be rested after the long Euros?

        Shaw was equally frustrating 🙂

Agreed on AWB point but do think he's been improving season on season and can see that continuing. Add in a Sancho ahead of him perhaps as suggested above and he could grow.

Does Chilwell come into your thinking?

Early fixtures less than exciting of course but City are also slightly mixed if you're looking at a longish hold and not that much in it up to week 8 or so. Think he's the 6.0 I'd be aiming for.

Find it hard to commit to 6.0 cs with Dias on week 1 budget and prefer the Chilwell risk reward ratio to Cancelo.

Why not Stones at 5.5? Cancelo looked very good, but pretty much "the Lamptey way". His shots were soft and Stones was very dangerous from set pieces. Therefore comparing xG with them is like comparing Ayling and Dallas last season.

Yea. As written above I am considering MU def double up. AWB at least shoud be certain starter and having both Shaw and Stones gw 1 is probably too much. Dias is the safest bet, but I will probably want cheaper and more exciting Stones if he gets regular starts.

Pretty good. Close to my team where I have Buendia over Grealish and no Targett or Coufal. I just simply don't want to force my hand to early WC. It will probably cost me -4 come gw 4, but I prefer the latter ib when there is more info and bigger fixture swing.

Not a fan of the WC after IB1. I feel it's 50/50 in getting it right. I think after IB2 where we have more information is a good time to WC. Of course if your team needs major changes then WC is the right play

I've seen a few teams with Barnes. Are we expecting him to start most games?
            If so, who loses out?

            I'm expecting Leicester to play a 3-4-3.

            Schmeichel
            Fofana Soyuncu Evans
            Castagne Tielemens Ndidi Thomas
            Maddison
            Iheanacho Vardy

            Thoughts?

If this happens then Tielemans may become an option if he takes set pieces.

Hard to predict. I like Iheanacho as his form was so good I don’t see how he isn’t first choice. Maddison and Barnes a wait ‘n see for me. Not sure whether Maddison might not be as good as he thinks he is.

With Nacho now stepping up and new signing Daka, LEI team are now flexible to a few formations. They can easily go 4 or 5ATB. Play 2 up top or go with 3 with Vardy Nacho Barnes. I expect Daka to be eased in and Vardy to have reduced game time but play the bigger games. Quite difficult to guess at the moment

Looking for thoughts on the latest draft.

4.5def and 7.5fwd can be interchanged. I could go 352 and upgrade Brownhill to Buendia and Toney to 4.5fwd but that reduces the team to 1 playing bench player which I may need to cover Mahrez.

                  A fan

I'm dubious about Fofana. Wonder if the's one of those early template options that will fall by the wayside. Haven't got him in yet but Coufal is increasingly part of my thoughts.

                  Mahrez? Tempting.

White and Holding is high on my list to change Fofana.

With City attackers going deep in the Euros and KDB with ankle ligament injury, Mahrez rested and full preseason looks a good option into City team

Coufal has played a lot of games in season 20/21 and Euros. I don't think WHU have an alternative for him and when you consider the Europa fixtures, WHU players become less appealing due to the squad depth

Europa kicks in only from week 5 iirc and the schedule under the new format looks a lot kinder so not really factoring that in - not least as earlyish WC is probable if history is any guide,

                      But not sold on him.

I didn't know specifically when Europa kicked in. Just knew it was near the start of the season. At his price point, I just feel I could use that 0.5 in attackers and get a 4.5def. If I had to pick a WHU def, Coufal over Cresswell would be my preferred pick. I hope Masuaku can become an option. Looked great at LWB

My thinking behind Mahrez is that the likes of Foden, Sterling and Torres going deep in the Euros and KDB with an ankle injury, Mahrez should be be nailed for the first few GWs as he is well rested and should have preseason behind him

I think in general the pricing is fine but it would've been good to price some players differently so you can at least ask the question rather than completely ruling them out as an option e.g. Mane vs Salah

Maybe Bellerin, if he stays, and Justin, when fit. Aurier and Firpo can be an interesting picks if they are nailed.

Just on the Burnley article. It is funny how I always end up avoiding them except for defence and keeper. I got burnt getting Barnes before when himself and Wood were a similar price.

But there is one player who is always a funny one. Ticks along extremely consistently all season. Gets an assist here or there from play. Takes some set pieces - corners etc.

Ashley Westwood - 5.5 top of the midfielders at that price or under (if you discount Dallas)

The amount of times season in season out. Westwood pops up with assists - and I say oh him again. Last season he got three goals and four assists - eleven clean sheet points.
Nearly always seems to be in the mix for bonus points when I am watching a game live and looking at those in contention,

There is a good reason to avoid Burnley in the beginning of the season.

True enough from the fixtures point of view. But if I need to save a .5 or 1m ish at some time in the season. I think I do worse than Westwood.

No one is essential but TAA is nailed in my team for the start. Similar mids and fwds. Defence looks better with the use of the TAA funds. Not a huge fan on planning defender transfers. I would prefer to use FTs on attackers and get Cancelo from the start

Maybe not essential, but to gamble with Mahrez over him isn't my piece of cake. TAA gets cs + A + 3 bps too often and has plum fixtures to start with.

No player is essential so get that out of your head for a start.
What is essential is that you maximise the points of your team overall.
I actually messed around with various options and going without a liverpool defender means you can get a very balanced side - lots of 5.5m ish defenders for example. Like you have shown.
But I hedged my bets and went Robertson will downgrade him maybe gw3.
As for your side I like the balance in it. Mahrez could be a shrewd pick. Not many have mentioned him - no Euros for an Algerian player either.
The only player you have picked that I am not sure about is Antonio. Injury prone etc. I would prefer Wilson/Iheanacho at that price.

Yeah agreed mate there are some great options around 5.5, a back three of Digne, Shaw and Cresswell for example could be a great shout!! Yeah Mahrez could be a good pick especially as you say no international involvement over the summer!! Antonio could be Wilson or Nacho for sure I like all 3 option there but completely understand your injury concerns the same could be said for Wilson too, will be nice to See Jimmy back too at some point at that price!!!

What would you do if Sancho comes in at a similar price to Mahrez? Not on it yet but I have a putative variation of this with Kane Sancho over Bruno Mahrez.

                    - number of players that are reliable and can be locked in for the half season to pick
                    - number of high upside players to pick

Just had a gander at the palace squad, biers has really got his hands full there. He’s going to have to pull off some real transfer coups even to get them competitive, I can see him getting quite a few loanees in from his old mates at Arsenal and City

The owners said they would bring players in when they appointed him so it should happen.

They also have a lot of young developing players which plays to his strengths

Less worrying than it looks at first sight to my mind. Most of the blanks in the squad are just that - squad players - the core is intact. The biggest worry for me - as a Palace fan is how Vieira himself turns out. especially given the tough start. FdB replay can't be ruled out.

Olise is essentially a left footed Eze - similar class. There's a CB on the way apparently - young Dane with decent pedigree. Also there are a couple of other exciting young attackers that we're probably favourites for given Vieira and that there's a good chance of first team action.

The big gaps right now are at right back and central mid mostly - depending on where Kouyate fits in. The ease of the Olise signing - a real coup - is good news as most everyone was after him.

Easy to forget this squad were safe by week 30 in each of the last 2 seasons. Most of the absentees were peripheral. Cahill and Ward the biggest misses, Townsend I'll miss but he wasn't central at all last season.

Nervous but less pessimistic than I expected.

Antonio doesn’t get much chances in games. In other words, he is not in center of everything like bamford or watkins

                    100% agree

You know every season when the game closes, and you have these little thoughts on generic things/what to do for the following year?

One that screamed to me was “just get Bamford - don’t overthink, don’t look at fixtures, don’t try to be clever by timing him - just get him from the start and take a lean Gameweek or two if necessary”

Really hope I end up following my own advice lol

Antonio is proper class too though - like a genuine wrecking ball of a player

I’m actually quite worried that I can’t fit him in 🙁

He just destroys teams when he’s fit, completely unplayable, could have had several much larger hauls than last season if he’d been a bit luckier (and who can forget the 4 goal demolition of Norwich about 18 months ago)

His problem is his fitness, nothing else imo

                          What striker do you have?

Toney - Bamford - Watkins would be my guess 🙂

At the minute - Toney, Bamford, Nacho - with 1.5m ITB

Nacho is the other guy I don’t want to overthink, he’s just so good 😆

But tbh Watkins & DCL become very dangerous when you go without for GW1 with their ownerships, so it’s nowhere near settled yet

But if GW1 was tomorrow that’s my front 3

I have the money to get Bamford if I get him instead of DCL

But Going Bamford and DCL could be a different way to go than most - as most are going the 7.5m players route. An option I have not considered until posting this.
I have bad memories of last season got rid of Bamford for a -4 for Aguero and Bamford scored a hattrick.

I think I do too, to be honest. FFS influence is making me going for Raphinha.

I’m on both at the minute - you can instantly feel the friction on the FFS boards towards “wow, wow, wow - that’s way too much Leeds”, “fixtures are bad” etc etc

But take a step back and look at what you get for 14.5m - two fixture proof, nailed attacking maestros in what is basically a champions league level goalscoring team, with penalties and corners between them

One of the caveats for me is how Leeds share the goals around - it's in their DNA and part of what makes that attack work so well.

I'm expecting an uptick in returns this time around but not sure that it will be that significant with the extra returns being spread about and not necessarily focussed on those two and Bambam feels fairly marginal for value when looking at the competition.

Yeah Bamford with 28 returns in 38 appearances is obscene - and has he safety net of penalties which is easily worth 0.5 imo

Raphinha - look at what he did from GW14 onwards (only joined Leeds GW5, didn’t get his first start to GW9 & didn’t really hit his straps until GW14… but boy did he have an effective GW14-38)

Plus watching Raphinha he looks Liverpool or Man City material, Leeds have a proper, proper player there - if there was a criticism from an FPL a perspective it’s hat the one thing he isn’t is selfish (very much a team player, as is Bamford) but set pieces more than even that out imo & I see him generating a lot of interest this year & possibly even earning a big move away

My initial draft is very similar - essentially Robbo as a forward the only real difference.

KdB I imagine I will turn into Sancho or Mahrez. There's a decent price point there potentially and the KdB injury situation is off-putting.

Prefer my set up as I manage a 4.5 defensive back up. Fofana I don't believe is nailed at all and both Shaw and Lamptey are slight worries for different reasons.

Will be keeping an eye on De Bruyne and Kane incase he gets rested too start with.

What makes you think Fofana won’t start he had a great season for Leicester?

A 4-3-3 must be a potential line up - that leaves 2 spots for Soy Evans and Fofana. Also last season there was so much churn in Leicester defence generally I'm not putting too much weight on what happened then. They were ravaged by injuries.

Having both is too highly leveraged towards Liverpool conceding a single goal imo

Barnes, Maddison, Lingard, Siggy, Raphinia, Bowen, Saka, Harrison, Sarr, ESR... At least a couple of these guys are going to bang and structurally it could be good to have a quick route to them (or even get lucky and have the right one from the start)

Don’t want to back against Trent’s ridiculous underlyings

If VVD goes 50/75/100% above his XGi he might get his 5 goals again…

But if Trent exceeds his XGi (or even just plays closer to it than he did last year) he’s just instantly in double figure attacking returns

Plus VVD’s cruciate now has to be tested rigorously - the next time he goes for a 50:50 challenge or tries to turn quickly it has to be in the back of his mind

I would probably get white instead of Lamptey if White moves to Arsenal. To spread the risk of Brighton conceding since you already have Sanchez.

Front line is a standout and the defence. Would prefer Saka instead of Buendia.

Previously had fofana but he is just a CS guy.

It could be close. But I would not be doubling up on both that is for sure. Particularly with Ben White being rumoured to leave and how Brighton have a knack of finding a way to concede a goal when they look comfortable.

Everton xG and xGC since 2016/17

                2016/17 (Koeman): xG: 49.6, aG: 62 (big overperformance), xGC: 45.8, aGC: 44
                2017/18 (Allardyce): xG: 43.7, aG: 44, xGC: 55.5, aGC: 58
                2018/19 (Silva): xG: 53.9, aG: 54, xGC: 49.3, aGC: 46
                2019/20 (Ancelotti): xG: 53.7, aG: 44 (big underperformance), xGC: 49.2, aGC: 56
                2020/21 (Ancelotti): xG: 49.2, aG: 47, xGC: 50.2, aGC: 48

Everton are basically a team that score 50 goals a season and concede 50 goals a season. They have had some good managers in that time too so can you expect Benitez to improve them that much?

More interesting to me is the form surges there. Spot on about the 50 goal record and the managerial history but there have been some purple patches there - the Silva defence springs to mind - those deceptively flattering spells are a key part of their DNA too.
