FPL team news: Gameweek 18 injury updates ahead of Saturday’s deadline

We’ve got the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team news information in our first press conference summary ahead of Gameweek 18.

Only four pre-match pressers took place on Thursday, involving the managers of Brentford, Burnley, Leeds United and Southampton.

The Brentford v Southampton game was subsequently postponed, however.

For much more detailed information, check out our gradually updated Predicted Line-ups page and Injuries and Bans feed ahead of Saturday’s FPL deadline at 13:30 GMT.

BURNLEY

Ashley Barnes remains absent with a thigh injury, with Maxwel Cornet‘s similar issue described as “still touch and go” in regards to making Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa; the fact that he hadn’t trained as of Thursday wouldn’t seem to bode well for his Gameweek 18 chances.

Dale Stephens and Connor Roberts are still recovering from their respective illnesses, while another unnamed Clarets player has tested positive for Covid-19.

“It is only one and we think we have removed him from the situation very quickly” – Sean Dyche on how many positive Covid tests are amongst his playing squad

LEEDS UNITED

All Marcelo Bielsa had to say on injuries is that Jamie Shackleton (Achilles) and Daniel James (muscle) have been added to the list of Patrick Bamford (hamstring), Kalvin Phillips (hamstring), Rodrigo (heel), Liam Cooper (hamstring) and Pascal Struijk (knee).

Robin Koch is ready to play for the first time since Gameweek 1 after recovering from a pelvic injury and illness. However, Junior Firpo will be suspended on Saturday, having picked up his fifth booking of the season.

BRENTFORD AND SOUTHAMPTON

Not that it matters now for Gameweek 18 but Thomas Frank revealed on Thursday that Ivan Toney (Covid) and Ethan Pinnock (Covid) are available for selection again. Sergi Canos is free of suspension, too.

Frank went on to reveal that another 13 of his players and staff have tested positive for Covid-19, which ultimately resulted in the postponement of Saturday’s game.

The Bees are still without David Raya (knee), Kristoffer Ajer (hamstring), Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen (thigh) and Josh Dasilva (hip).

Saints would have been without Che Adams (hamstring), Fraser Forster (hamstring), Alex McCarthy (hamstring), Stuart Armstrong (calf) and Adam Armstrong (calf) for the clash in west London.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

True that, I have 4 left and one of them captain of course but they are the most owned players probably, but still if they haul it would help I guess.

16 from 4 with Salah (C), Jota, TAA, James and Rudiger left (9 playerd this GW).

Can’t complain too mich I guess, but I’m still at risk of getting knocked out of the Cup against a GW14 entry with Vardy(C) and De Gea (VC)

It's going to be a low scoring GW overall, so I wouldn't worry too much. If you have half the average score when the average is 36, then that's okay. When you have half the average score when the average is 70, that's when it really blows.

I am doing well, on 27p with triple arsenal from bench to come in, do 44 in total, if if Alonso and the 3 liv assets play a full 11.
But this is not fun. I want to have more points than others because i picked players who scores more not because the others have players blanks cause of covid.

Yeah i think this is key. Captaining Salah doesn't get you anywhere, but not doing it when he smashes really hurts you. But if all 3 contribute and you have them, then some gains can be had, but, more so for players like me though, who are fighting to stay around 500k and creep forward.

Boarding this train too. Missed Antonio's explosive start but have been holding him ever since, feel like a right nob. Maybe the 2 of them can make hay.

Twitchy trigger finger though with 2.8 in the bank. My cadre of budget midfielders have contributed bar Bowen. (ESR and Gallagher have secured a spot for now).

I already had Foden once and rage transferred him out.

Yeah it's a toughie. Still, West Ham are definitely the real deal, and I'm giving Bowen an audition for those fixtures. And Antonio's last ride if he doesn't chip in lol. Up the Hammers then!

Is this game?? FPL I mean normally won in the second half of the season?? Is that when the sharks, pro pundits and planners make up the ground or will the guys on top maintain. What's the usual run of the mill. I presume the pro's make ground late on? 2022 is going to be mega fro DGW's, etc..

Generally, yes. The engaged folk with their chips in hand will finish well.

The main thing is not having to gain from too far back.

yeah definitely, you need a good placing mid season but personally I've found I can make up a lot of ground over the second half of the season

Depends who you pick the 'fpl sharks' always have blind spots and copy each other. Duffy captain a few years ago in a DGW stands out. Andy Carroll another year. Both flopped and those who went their own way made big gains.

Yeah it is something I remind myself of when I see a sudden new fpl trend out of the blue. Makes me stand by and look at other options.

Given the number of people with 'FPL' in their Twitter username dishing out advice, I'm not sure what constitutes a pro anymore. I'd lean towards a number of 4 or 5 digit overall ranks in the last few years as the game has grown.

As Rainer says, there's a lot to be said for conserving chips for GW3*, when you can typically make the most of doubles.

True. There is so much content out there now. Most are template followers. Skill is always finding your own differentials really. Most follow 'pros'. Agree with chip usage too, even though BB is nice to get out of the way sometimes early.

I agree with the posters. I think though that the BB chip can hinder your team. It's very much the 'lucky' chip as a lot of work goes into the bench build, taking away from first 11, but you've only got one gw to execute it. Then you may want to dissipate cash from bench for that final run-in.
Anything can happen preceding/during that build from covid, injuries, suspension & rotation for the dgw you play it. The rest of the chips are good for strategy fpl points as you should clearly have the advantage for doubles & blanks.

Yea I agree totally with you as regards Bench Boost. I used it early so I can focus on first 11 for second half of season when you have a high TV and can have a strong 11.I got lucky and it netted me 22 points early on, but could have gone either way.. Can be a total hit and miss chip as you say. Pure luck.

I played it early last year in a sgw, when the stars aligned, for 15 pts, similar to previous seasons dgw points. The same dgw last year would have netted me 31 pts. It's a tough call, but not worth the build I reckon.

Lewis should have given his place back on lap 1. You should feel lucky to have just 3 man u players. you could have 3 spurs players too.

I just bought a Vauxhall Astra for £1000 less than a dealer would charge me 'cause I got it from a private buyer.
It's now in the Vauxhall garage and costing me £1400 to get it on the road again.

The value of second cars has gone up so much that my brother was recently contacted out of the blue by his VW dealer. They offered him £2K more than he paid for it 3 years ago AND a further £500 off as a trade-in. My brother was staggered but he still declined their offer.

I have a 7 year old Corolla which had a market value of $7000 a last year. Checked on a used car website and got a quote for $13000 couple weeks ago. I'm still not sure if I should sell in case I need to buy back another one.

Wait to see if there is a league-wide pause or break. If so, take stock of any emergency changes you've made over the last couple of GWs (e.g. I ditched DDG, kept Ronaldo), and try and figure out any likely double game weeks that will be played sooner (e.g. not Spurs).

I'm probably going to shake up my keepers (currently Ramsdale and Steel, so maybe just ensuring Steel is replaced by someone who actually plays in case of postponements), ditch my current 4m 5th defender, and ditch Antonio with a view to upgrading a midfielder. 4 transfers seems a waste of a w/c but might as well use it.

If AFCON is cancelled though, all bets are off (currently got Salah, Jota, ESR, Gallagher and Bilva already).

When that happened (19/20) I finished in the top 5K. I was doing OK regardless, but having kept my second wildcard was a gamechanger as I could use the unlimited xfers and only need to plan for two weeks before wildcarding.

Assuming it would be a similar situation, and a similar lack of comms from FPL Towers, I think we'd just have to speculatively use up the first wildcard as the gameweek deadlines would just come and go as they stand.

Fcuked again next week no keeper or strikers (imagine Watford game is off too and I have Dennis, king and cr7).

Yeah no DDG this week has hurt me and backup is a Brighton keeper so Saturday sucks too. Rival unaffected because he’s a Liverpool fan and doesn’t bring in United players.
