FPL Gameweek 1 recap: Haaland’s price rises after first City haul

Having already brought you the statistical summary of Sunday’s Gameweek 1 action, we now turn our attention to the wider Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the day’s fixtures.

WEST HAM UNITED 0-2 MANCHESTER CITY

Erling Haaland (£11.6m) netted his first ever Premier League goals against West Ham United, in a comfortable 2-0 away win for Manchester City.

The big man stepped up to convert a first-half penalty, before he timed his run to perfection to latch onto an excellent ball from Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) for his second.

Despite eyeing a Premier League debut hat-trick, Haaland was withdrawn with 12 minutes remaining, which should ensure he is fit and raring to go for City’s Etihad clash with Bournemouth in Gameweek 2.

HAALAND’S PREMIER LEAGUE DEBUT BY NUMBERS

Big chances4

Expected goals (xG)1.52

“Haaland gives us his qualities. We are not going to change much, we will adapt, we know we have a threat there. He is an incredible deep runner and finisher. He is adapting perfectly in the way we want to play. We are going to find him more and more and hopefully we can give him the opportunity to score more goals.

“When it was a penalty he immediately took the ball and I like that. The penalty is the guy who has the confidence to do it, is going to do it.” – Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland’s performance

The Norwegian rose in price overnight and it’s no coincidence that Harry Kane (£11.4m) fell, with many managers making the sideways switch.

De Bruyne, meanwhile, delivered an all-round impressive display, creating three chances and taking two shots.

Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Kyle Walker’s (£5.0m) inverted roles, which saw them both move into central midfield when City were in possession, meant the Belgian and fellow number eight Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m) advanced closer to Haaland in the attacking positions.

Above: Man City’s 2-3-4-1 shape in possession, with both full-backs (Walker no2/Cancelo no7) tucking inside to join Rodri in a narrow midfield three

“Sometimes they (the full-backs) play outside it depends on the opponent. I like to have a lot of players in the middle it is like the kitchen in the apartment. We just want to create.” – Pep Guardiola on Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo

Explaining his decision to start Phil Foden (£8.0m) over Riyad Mahrez (£8.0m) on the right wing, Pep Guardiola said:

“Phil trained incredibly well this week. Phil is always fit, in terms of physicality he’s always beyond expectation. Step by step he will be in his best form.” – Pep Guardiola on his decision to start Foden

City had 76 per cent possession, which meant West Ham were left chasing shadows for large periods. As a result, Michail Antonio (£7.5m) was isolated up front and they failed to provide him with much service (their six shots carried a combined xG value of just 0.29), a theme which was also evident in pre-season.

“They were so good. I felt that tactically they completely outdid us today. They played differently than at the end of last season with both full-backs in the middle of the pitch like midfielders. We worked hard to try and replicate what we did in that game. It was a case of trying to stay in the game. It was only 1-0 at half-time with a penalty and it gave us an opportunity and a chance. We’d just started to grow into the game and their quality told. I felt like we had not played well enough so I wanted to try and change the run of the game. We got a little bit more of the ball for about five mins. They were far better than us and we couldn’t cope today.” – David Moyes

West Ham had just one centre-back available for the match, with Craig Dawson (£5.0m), Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) and Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) all injured, while Issa Diop (£4.5m) did not put himself forward for selection.

The Hammers’ injury woes then worsened when Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) was forced off before the half-hour mark after colliding with Haaland and Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m), although Moyes didn’t think it was too serious.

“He got a knock on his hip, which he thinks has numbed his leg completely, so the knock makes me feel not so bad. Hopefully, it won’t be anything serious but he’s limping badly at the moment.” – David Moyes on Lukasz Fabianski

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski (Areola 29); Coufal, Johnson, Zouma, Cresswell; Soucek, Rice; Bowen (Downes 90+2), Lanzini (Benrahma 57), Fornals (Coventry 90+2); Antonio (Scamacca 57)

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo; Rodri (Phillips 88), De Bruyne (Palmer 88), Gundogan (Bernardo 78); Foden (Mahrez 88), Grealish, Haaland (Alvarez 78)

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-2 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) was enough to save Manchester United, as Erik ten Hag made a losing start in the Old Trafford dugout.

Lining up in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 formation, Christian Eriksen (£5.5m) was deployed as a false nine in the first-half, an experiment that didn’t work and led to the introduction of Ronaldo after just 53 minutes.

“It was clear to see the second half we were better in the midfield with Eriksen down and Ronaldo up, then we created. It was a pity we didn’t score then. It all takes time, you cannot force it. He is one week in training, a little bit more now. He has to do more to get fit and this game will help him. He will be better next week.” – Erik ten Hag on Cristiano Ronaldo

Elsewhere, Scott McTominay (£5.0m) was deployed higher up the pitch than would normally be the case, while Marcus Rashford’s (£6.5m) position was the most advanced of all United players, as he racked up three shots in the box from his role on the wing.

He was also denied by a point-blank save from Robert Sanchez (£4.5m), something not captured by the stats due to a narrow offside call in the build-up.

“We have two strikers, maybe a third one with Rashford as well, you could see him as a striker. He had a really good pre-season on the left side and also today had two really good chances, coming in from the left side, so I think it was the right decision to do it like this. But we didn’t have the typical nine. He was not available today. If he was available – the striker (Martial) – I would have played him. Cristiano Ronaldo has now, for 10 days, (been) team training, that is too short for 90 minutes. That’s the reason he didn’t start.” – Erik ten Hag

A Brighton and Hove Albion win certainly wasn’t in the script, but tactician Graham Potter masterminded an excellent win for the Seagulls thanks to a Pascal Gross (£5.5m) brace.

The former Ingolstadt 04 midfielder created more chances per 90 minutes than any FPL midfielder bar De Bruyne and Eriksen last season, and may pick up a bit of Fantasy interest ahead of an appealing run of fixtures, which sees Brighton sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 2 to 8.

Danny Welbeck (£6.5m), meanwhile, led the line and was a real menace to his former club, with his runs down the channels causing problems for United’s backline throughout.

“It was a great performance and a deserved win. A great way to start. I thought we had an idea of how to attack and when we could we tried to press and put them under pressure. We were positive, brave and the boys gave everything. Our performance in the first-half was really strong.

It’s not easy (losing Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella) because as the transfer fees suggests they were two really key players. In any team you miss good players. We have got a good group, they are ambitious they are not perfect but they give everything and when you’re a coach it gives you a chance.” – Graham Potter

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw (Malacia 90); Fred (Ronaldo 53), McTominay (van de Beek 78), Fernandes (Garnacho 90); Sancho (Elanga 90), Rashford, Eriksen

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (3-4-2-1): Sanchez; Veltman, Dunk, Webster; Gross, Mac Aallister, Caicedo, Trossard (Lamptey 75); March (Colwill 90+1), Lallana (Mwepu 76); Welbeck (Undav 90+5)

LEICESTER CITY 2-2 BRENTFORD

James Maddison (£8.0m) picked up from where he left off last season with an assist for Leicester City’s opener at the King Power.

Notably, the playmaker has now been directly involved in 14 Premier League goals for the Foxes in 2022 (seven goals and seven FPL assists), only five players have had a hand in more this calendar year.

Elsewhere, Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) and James Justin (£4.5m) were extremely advanced from their wing-back roles, racking up 27 and 17 final-third touches respectively, while £4.0m ‘keeper Danny Ward started in goal.

However, Leicester’s inability to keep clean sheets, plus away trips to Arsenal and Chelsea in the next three, means owners will likely be relying on saves to boost his points tally in the coming weeks.

The 3-5-1-1 formation also allowed Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) plenty of freedom to attack, and he responded by hitting the post, one of four shots he registered on the day.

Above: Youri Tielemans’ touch heatmap v Brentford in Gameweek 1

As for the visitors, Thomas Frank’s substitutions changed the game, with Josh Dasilva (£4.5m) coming on to net the equaliser after 86 minutes.

Brentford had a shot blocked which looped out to the budget midfielder, who then curled a peach of a strike inside the far post.

“I wanted to say something about Josh in the dressing room after the game. I almost got emotional just thinking about it. He’s been out for 18 months; almost a year then a setback and another setback. He had a very good pre-season. The last week he’s looked just that little bit sharper and I knew I wanted to put him on the pitch. In that moment – when he cut in – I just knew it was going to be a goal. I’ve seen that so many times from him. It’s a great moment and a great story.” – Thomas Frank on Josh Dasilva

Last season’s 14-goal top scorer Ivan Toney (£7.0m) was also on the scoresheet via a Rico Henry (£4.5m) assist, and is an intriguing differential given Brentford’s forthcoming fixtures, especially if they can add Mikkel Damsgaard into the mix.

“We stayed in the game and made a few changes at half-time. We wanted to go after them, but then conceded after two minutes. It was another worldie! I don’t know what they feed them here in Leicester! He’s (Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall) scored from 28 yards; a brilliant goal. We changed quickly after that to the 3-4-3 and grew into the game. We looked very fit, we worked very hard and showed the mentality that I know is in this squad. The difference between teams is small, so the mentality that the guys have is the difference. They showed it in abundance at the end – what a way to come back. It’s a deserved point and a fantastic comeback.” – Thomas Frank

Leicester City XI (3-5-1-1): Ward; Fofana, Evans, Amartey; Castagne, Dewsbury-Hall (Daka 73), Ndidi, Tielemans, Justin; Maddison; Vardy

Brentford XI (4-3-3): Raya; Hickey (Bech 84), Jansson, Mee (Lewis-Potter 59), Henry; Norgaard (Baptiste 73), Janelt, Jensen (Dasilva 59); Mbeumo, Wissa (Dervisoglu 84), Toney

Haaland Foden

Mahrez should really leave City at some point like Sterling did

Depends what we wants from this career.

And also depends whether he sees Sterling/Jesus succeed or flop. Both Chelsea and Arsenal have players waiting to take their places if they do!

Signed a new deal not long ago. He's 31 now and will be 32 at the start of next year, realistically maybe he knows his best chance of winning more trophies is at City, won't be too many big clubs that would want someone of his age despite his ability. Seems to be happy knowing he's one of the few players that's nearly always going to play in the Champions League too.

He won the league with Leicester, think he's going to be content playing a rotation role for one of the biggest clubs in the world on a massive salary while picking up more trophies.

There should be a hot topic on formation. I'm seeing quite a few managers go for 5-3-2 compared to the popular 4-4-2. Do we think 5-3-2 will eventually take over?

The 5.5 mids are all meh tbh

343 for me balanced flexible. Look at number of posts today needing hit or wanting to WC because had 4.5 striker and big at the back

Big at the back works if you pick sides which will keep clean sheets. Not your 'Villas' who are not good for clean sheets..

Despite popular belief, historically the most points come from the midfield so playing with less than 4 in the mid is not statistically recommended.

The temptation to knee jerk is strong but I think I'll stick with my single premium approach for now. Salah showed just about enough to give me confidence as a perma cap for the first 8 and on another week my 3 8m mids all haul. Not the best start but 61 points isn't bad.

Good luck to you. Was my plan also to stick with just Salah. But after seeing Haarland yesterday and the fact he has Penalties I caved in. Their fixtures are just to good and until they start in Europe I cant see Haarland not starting.

Mitrovic price rice is just crazy to me. Mixed fixtures at best. Plays for a promoted club and won’t haul every week. Craziest part is who are people ditching? Jesus? Kane?

Kane mostly from the looks of things, we'll see how things go. I was impressed by Fulham's tenacity, pressing and pace, I read from a few Fulham fans that their build-up play was too slow last year and that they'd have little chance this season if they didn't change that. That being said, nearly any other defender than TAA should have dealt with the first goal, didn't see the second yet but heard it may have been a lucky penalty from a dive. Definitely kneejerky though, I forgot how volatile price changes were in the first 3-4 weeks last year and it looks like it's the same again this year

I agree re: Fulham and the TAA defending. Although Mitrovic is going to destroy Martinez at United…

I’ve watched the penalty incident over and over and I still can’t tell whether there was contact or not.

I'm yet to see how bad ManUtd were but heard "The Butcher" didn't impress, early days of course but I was very sceptical of that big fee they paid. No disrespect to the Eredivisie but it's a very different standard to the PL so you'd really want to be paying prices like that for the very best players in that league, and even then there will be big questions

Mate. Watching Mitrovic and Haaland play this weekend with such physicality, Martinez will be lucky to not come off on a stretcher when United play Fulham and City. He clearly doesn’t have the physicality to be a PL centre back. He offers nothing at set pieces either. Really odd signing.

Ten Hag just looked baffled that there will be more than two competitive league games to play in a season.

I get and did Kane for Haaland.

But Kane for Mitrovic is madness. Casuals helping make Kane cheaper later on for us though when they forget about their team…

Pukki got the third most points out of all forwards last season, despite Norwich getting relegated. Cheap third forward who is on pens can be played against any defense.

Mount to Martinelli is a pretty good downgrade to fund 4.5 to Mitrovic before Chelsea plays Spurs.

Locking in a hit (assuming Trippier not your only transfer of that nature) means you got 3 points from him. Unless you were expecting a 15 pointer then seems like poor management to me

I chose Kane instead of Haaland and even though I still believe it was the percentage call beforehand it was still a proper boot in the goolies to watch. But hey-ho, he could have scored more and I'm sure I'll have more traumatic experiences over the next nine months.

Quite fortuitously however, I took the captaincy off him before the deadline and gave it to Salah so things could have been a whole lot worse. All things being equal, I was almost certainly going to switch to Haaland for GW2 anyway so I haven't really wasted a transfer although with hindsight obviously I wish I didn't have to make it in the first place. I also made that transfer last night so I'm patting myself on the back for the moment as I've gained a small advantage (in my mind anyway) on the 4m people who don't already own him and the 2m who still have Kane.

At the end of the day it was 11 points down the drain, a mere drop in the ocean when the final count is made on the 28th May next year.

    Onwards and Upwards!

On the other hand though I got some big decisions right (Salah(c) Haaland Kulusevski Martinelli) BUT it was the small stuff that added up to at least 11 points lost (wrong Gk, wrong 5M defender) not to mention other decisions I was happy with though they failed (TAA Robbo Jesus)

The Spurs team on Saturday was the same one that lost 2-0, 2-0, 3-0 and 1-0 to Chelsea last season! I guess you could say they are due a goal, but Kane Son were marshalled easily by Silva last season. Richarlison cameo Spurs best hope.

    Panic stations?
A massive bandwagon for Kane to Haaland; fair enough; it is warranted. But changing your side dramatically is ridiculous.
I had a poor start with 58 points. I made the Haaland move and now have 11 home starters against "easier sides" apart from RJames and Mount.
No panic for me, just boredom.

    Some advice if possible.

Had a good week. Decided to go with Kulu & Sterling over Haaland & Bailey, which actually paid off. 78 points, not bad!

I build my team on the assumption that Haaland wouldn’t fire early. That he would take some time to settle in.

I was very wrong. Watching the game today, it’s clear he really will be as impactful as many expected. Want him.

I have no route to Haaland with my team structure. It’s 3 transfers, as I have the inflexible one premium structure with Sterling.

    Do I…

    A) Roll transfer, hide behind sofa for his match vs Bournemouth, get him in for a minus 4 next week, take the price hit.

    B) Take the -8 this week. I had a good week, 78 points, and can afford to spend early on.

    C) Hit WC. I made a mistake. Haaland is essential, with the World Cup giving us a lifeline, it’s okay to use the first WC early. Also bring in Nunez, and tidy up some other areas in the team.

    Thoughts?

It’s not necessarily that I knew what I was getting into. More that I made a judgement that was incorrect, and want to now adjust due to the new information.

Like I said - I actually did better not choosing Haaland in that team structure. Sterling and Kulu (16 points) out scored Haaland and Bailey (15 points).

I’ll mull it over. C is tempting me. I’m the past GW2 WCs were always a thing.

Is the main strategy to use it during a double game week?
Also as you said it is as if you did not log on that gameweek do you then receive an additional transfer the following gameweweek?

I'd recommend reading the Help>Rules>Chips section of the official website

Free Hit Make unlimited free transfers for a single Gameweek. At the next deadline your squad is returned to how it was at the start of the Gameweek.

The Free Hit chip can be used once a season, is played when confirming your transfers and can't be cancelled after confirmed.

Please note that when playing either a Wildcard or your Free Hit chip, any saved free transfers will be lost. You will be back to the usual 1 free transfer the following Gameweek.

Guessing most people with Haaland are rolling the transfer?

Most the big teams have home fixtures next week.

It was the plan but I moved Kane to Nunez. Didn't think he's start so well amd quickly and the comments about Kane here over the weekend didn't sound too promising going forward. Just seen MOTD and he didn't look too far away from returns but Nunez looks great value

Hitting WC and getting in Haaland and Darwin two players which look like they will be running rampant and making at least 9 changes initially having Mount and Sterling in midfield seemed like a good idea to me.

Is a front 3 of Jesus, Darwin and Haaland too much or should I make cash available by bringing in Trolmitro to have a decent defence and a sexy midfield? I did have Bamford, Jesus and Archer so downgrading Bamford to Mitrovic and ditching Archer is not the end of the world.

Jesus obviously has the majority backing him at the moment but in a couple of weeks from now that could change.

I like the look of 343

What will you do next week when you don't have another wildcard?

      What's your current team?

Loads will be hitting their WC jumping onto Haaland and Darwin pretty much makes sense to me and WC was the only viable way.

Haaland's price will be rocketing so early WC and my GW1 team is now history.

I always go 343. I started with Jesus Darwin Kane and FT Kane to Haaland today. Don't understand point of getting stuck with 4.5m striker that doesn't play 90 mins vs a 4m def or 2 that do at least early doors anyway

Yes, Patterson, Neco and Andreas all getting full games vs Archer getting a 5 minute run out.

        I agree!

Would think it is a bit too early to WC. Even better go for a -4 if for long term moves.

This time last year people changed their team to get Lukaku in after a great GW1 but it fell apart. These wholesale changes seem bonkers. Sterling Jesus and Bamford being rubbished after one game, but played quite well.

I have not rubbished Jesus or Bamford. I had Mount and Sterling double up and based on GW1, I do not think CHE are up to speed.

I am even avoiding CHE assets for now on my WC.

Sorry, a bit OTT by me! Still think too early to wildcard. This is the only time all season Chelsea and other big clubs will get a week off between GW1 and 2, and 2 and 3, so think they will all be up to speed quite quickly. Having read some of the reviews on best formation I think 442 seemed best value.

You think Haaland will do a Lukaku?

No but just think one needs to remember only one game played.

Wouldn't generally recommend WC yet, but that is my front line & formation. Dont think its "too much" - still easy combined with a premium mid (Son for me) + 8m mid + a couple premium defenders

I like Mitro off the back of 42 goals in championship

      Couldn't believe he's still only 27, maybe he's matured a bit

Didn't he get 34 or something season before Fulham last came up?

I disagree with the “it’s too early to WC” narrative.

If the new information means you need to make changes but your team structure doesn’t allow it, then do it. Watching Haaland yesterday, he’s a beast who people need.

Are we expecting a double price rise for Zincenko before the gw2 deadline?
