Moving Target

What can FPL managers expect from Graham Potter at Chelsea?

While the short-term uncertainty over fixtures leaves us unable to do much Fantasy Premier League (FPL) planning with any great conviction, our editorial content will slowly resume with some less Gameweek-focused articles.

Here we look at what Graham Potter’s appointment as Chelsea manager means for FPL managers, and which players could potentially thrive under their new boss.

Chelsea announced the appointment of Potter as their new head coach on Thursday, following the departure of Thomas Tuchel.

The 47-year-old led Brighton and Hove Albion to their highest-ever top-flight finish in 2021/22 and left the Seagulls in fourth in the Premier League table.

As things stand, Potter’s first match in charge is set to be the UEFA Champions League clash against RB Salzburg on Wednesday.

THE HISTORY

Having come through the ranks at Birmingham City, Graham Potter went on to represent 12 different clubs across a 13-year playing career, including Stoke City, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

A few years after retiring, he began his coaching journey in Sweden with Ostersund’s, leading them from the fourth division to the top-flight, as well as winning the Swedish Cup and reaching the knock-out stages of the UEFA Europa League. The latter feat was especially impressive, given that they progressed from a group that included Athletic Bilbao and Hertha Berlin.

“When I started, we got attendances of 500 – now we’re playing in front of 30,000 at Hammarby and beating Gothenburg, who have competed in the Champions League before. It’s some difference to where we were a few years ago.” – Graham Potter

In 2018, Potter took over at Swansea City following their relegation from the Premier League. Although he could only guide them to a 10th-place finish in the Championship, his time in Wales was largely deemed a success, as he rebuilt a new, youthful side who hit their stride in the second half of the campaign. They also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

That was enough to earn a move to Brighton in 2019, who had recently dismissed Chris Hughton. However, it took a while to implement his ideas and philosophy, with 15th and 16th place finishes in his first two seasons at the club. Still, the owners kept faith and were rewarded in 2021/22, when Brighton finished ninth, the club’s highest-ever Premier League finish.

2022/23 began with a first-ever win at Old Trafford, while last week’s 5-2 win over Leicester City lifted Brighton to fourth, which is even more impressive given that they sold two of their best players – Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) and Yves Bissouma (£4.8m) – in the summer.

PLAYING STYLE

“We were in front of the best English manager right now. As a spectator, I like to watch these teams. I like watching Brighton play. I recognise it. When I was a football player, I would love to play in this team.” – Pep Guardiola on Graham Potter’s Brighton

At Brighton, Graham Potter would regularly change systems, shifting from back four to back three formations depending on the opponent. However, since the backend of last season, he has favoured a possession-based and fluid 3-4-2-1 (see below), which is a similar shape to Tuchel’s Chelsea.

He likes to use players who are comfortable in a number of different positions, like Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m), Solly March (£5.0m) and Leandro Trossard (£6.5m).

Indeed, the latter was signed as a winger, but also played as a number 10, a false nine, a central midfielder and more recently as a hybrid wing-back/inside forward, a position he thrived in.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Potter will stick with a 3-4-2-1 at Chelsea, but regardless of the formation, the fundamentals remain the same – defend as a team, focus on shape, build from the back, press a lot and commit players forward.

“He’s a players’ manager. He’s a problem solver. Tactically, he’s incredible at making sure when you step onto the pitch, everyone knows what they’re doing. What he’ll bring to Chelsea is exactly that. He’s a very calm person, and if he wants you to do something on the pitch, he takes responsibility if it goes wrong. He’s never there to throw anybody under the bus.” – Former Swansea City winger Nathan Dyer

THE PROSPECTS

 1

At this stage, we can only speculate about how Graham Potter will set up his team. However, we will get to see Chelsea in action prior to the next FPL deadline, when they face RB Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The fixtures, meanwhile, are very good from Gameweeks 9 to 12.

Chelsea’s defence has really struggled under Tuchel this season, but it’s an area that Potter should be able to fix, given his impressive record at Brighton in the past two seasons (see below).

Indeed, the Seagulls have allowed just five goals in their six league games in 2022/23, and two they have conceded were own-goals. By contrast, Chelsea have already conceded on nine occasions.

We are waiting for the morons at the FA and PL to make a decision.

If there are more postponements then ideally the games should be played BEFORE the break for the World Cup. I've just looked at the dates for league games and both cups. Between 26th Dec and 31st Jan there are 10 games scheduled.

I think it’s time we scrapped the league cup. There is simply no need for it. Hardly any other country has 2 cups so why do we? One league, one cup. And scrap international friendlies/nations league too while you’re at it. People will say “the games give a chance for managers to experiment and try out players” but it’d be the same for all nations if there were no friendlies; I’m really not bothered if fringe players like JWP get s as cap or not. Less football =more rest for the players = better quality

I think better to keep it but if you qualified for europe the previous season then you are not entered into the draw foe this season, then have it so the winner of the league cup gets the euro conference place. Would be a good opportunity for non big 6 to see wembley, have a bit of a cup run and a bit of european action now and then.

So games this weekend been cancelled because of authorities worried that some fans on some grounds may be disrespectful during minute of silence.

Do we think then that once football resumes clubs will just go over their business as usual and not commemorate The Queen ?

If so, fair enough "great" plan may work but if clubs try to have minute of silence at the 1st possible occasion aren't we just postponing inevitable ?

The Metro is an advertising trash paper owned by the Daily Mail Group.

I wouldn't give it much credence.

The games were postponed as a mark of respect and to allow reflection.

The Queen had a long standing relationship with the FA and football. At Wembley, the World Cup Final in 1966 and many FA Cup final. The Queen reopened Valley Parade when Bradford City beat an England 11.

Of course football will mark her passing at every ground at the next opportunity.

There may be one or two idiots but the vast majority will be dignified and respectful.

Games weren't postponed because of fears of booing. That's a trash headline.

Fair enough, still think that having fans united across country this weekend would be much powerful and respectful way of saying thank you & goodbye than just silence and empty grounds.

There is roughly 70 million people in Britain. A big percentage of those are anti monarchy (I’m not saying the percentage is bigger than royalists). So say for example 12 million adults in Britain are anti monarchists, are you telling me 10 million of those anti monarchists out the 12 million are “down with the monarchy but I quite like the queen”?

Recent polls suggest 25% of adults in Britain are anti monarchy. What % of those that would activity feel the need to boo a memorial at a football match will be tiny. There will be a few delinquents though as there always are.

I don’t think hardly any would boo. My guess would be that there’s a few million who disliked her. Disliking someone is not the same as not being able to stand someone. Despite my scepticism, you could be right, it’s just aggravating (to me) when people state something to be a fact just because they have an opinion they’re feeling confident about

Tony Benn was born with a silver spoon in his mouth yet still shunned aristocracy and did more for the working class people of Britain than anyone. Now he is someone who deserves respect

The dailymail blowing up what was likely a passing comment in the meeting - guaranteed the decision was based more on some big voices calling for postponement- clubs that wanted time. It’s a money game and there would have been some wanting to take advantage of the break

I do think it wise that we stick to content on this forum that relates to football and FPL. Yes - and how recent and future events over how the Queen's passing is affecting sporting fixtures and the fantasy game rules.

But to get into volatile arguments about monarchy, politics, imperialism etc... there are plenty of other forums if that's your bag. And there is of lot of other history that affects most nations and empires of the world and not just Britain.

Listening to Talksport. Looks like all Euro club UK home games to go ahead, they seem hopeful on PL games next weekend, didn't mention PL games in London. It's all changeable though so maybe hold off on transfers, WC, FH etc yet in anticipation of games progressing/postponed some or all.

Southgate naming his squad for Italy and Germany games on Thursday. Expected recalls for Sancho and Rashford, possible call-up for Toney. Pickford starting keeper? Pope is playing great stuff. Trent and Maguire probably not included on current form. Who do you think will make it for the Qatar squad to be named on October 19th and who would pick that Southgate won't?

I think the label that he is the goalkeeper most suited to the way Southgate sets up the team is better than sayibg he is the best goalie among England goalies.
He is superb in some aspect of the game, quick reactions, good with deliveries. His reach is not good which makes him vulnerable for letting in shots from distance you expect goalies to save, he is lacking commandmentship which gives his defenders trouble, and he makes howlers too frequently.

I wouldn't drop him. Playing very well and goes up the level for England. Has good backup too. Henderson knocking on the squad door, competition for places can only improve that squad.

I watched him closely in a couple of games this season. In one, he was a complete liability, worst player on the pitch; in the other, he got motm but looked far from convincing to my eye, his own poor positioning and decision-making cycling back to make him look good with over-dramatic saves. He's just going through a period of luck in terms of how people perceive him imo

Pickford is injured. Might give us a good idea who is the clear #2 though, if they get both.

It's a shame West Ham are doing poorly as that perhaps endangers Bowen's spot.

Very much doubt Maguire will be dropped. He actually turns up for England most of the time. Similar case for Trent.

Interesting to know what will happen to the LB spot. Tripper will definitely get picked, and probably play there, even though he's more of a RB. Wonder if Shaw or Chilwell gets called up in addition tonhim.

So GW8 aside as it is an utter shambles postponing GW7 instead of 8...

GW9 will be a tough test for Chelsea with a new manager and new stylevof play away to Palace.

I might jump off Chelsea having 2FT's in GW8 as they are unlikely to play GW8 whereas we could have actually seen how Potter 1st game vs Fulham this week.

There's a bit of uncertainty with Chelsea, Brighton, Liverpool lineups. United not quite settled yet. For Spurs who starts from Son, Kulusveski, Richarlison on current form? Euro midweek games, international break with possible injuries. Might be better holding WC for now.

Didn’t they do similar with Covid cancellations last year though. I think their priority is mass engagement though and people logging in to see their teams full of blanks and having used their wildcards already might make some give up early. Agreed it is a bit unfair though.

If the postponements stay as-is, is a wildcard a good roll of the dice?

I'm only posting for discussion. May not necessarily do this, but it has it's upsides.

Should the postponements stay as they currently are, eight teams would be without a game next weekend. TOT/LEI, BRE/ARS, CHE/LIV & BHA/CRY. Good thing out teams aren't full with those players right?!

Playing a wildcard could help you navigate this week & maximise a jump on a fair few other players, yet still set you up decently for the weeks to come, e.g.

    Pope
    Cancelo Trippier Neco Patterson*
    KDB Rashford MGW* Andreas
    Haaland Mitrovic
    Ward // Martinelli James Toney

*This team gives me 4.6m ITB, enough to move KDB/Patterson to Salah/TAA if really needed for example.

You could choose a better option for Patterson in the short term, given TAA's fixtures iffy in the next three. Tricky choice however unless you get Bruno over KDB for one week to get a City defender.

The MGW (and Rashford) spot is up for debate too. Could instead be ASM (if fit), or a Leeds midfielder although the latter's fixtures not amazing. Bailey also a shout if he starts... Fixtures actually good for him.

What do you think? It's turned my head given my team has the likes of: Sanchez, Ward, TAA, James, Cucurella, Jesus, Martinelli, Salah & Archer. Some who I'd like to keep, others not so much.

      I think FH is best.

Otherwise it's possibly not your optimal wildcard.

If the London theory holds true then I've got 7 of my first 11 out.

I'm not sure you need to worry about an optimal WC massively since we get 2 more WCs.

This WC you use only needs to be from GW8 - GW16.

I think the FH chip is more valuable for a week with doubles/blanks later in the season. You may not be able to WC to a good forward-looking team in a future instance, but absolutely can right now.

true, but 8 game weeks is a while.

I just think playing against the crowd with a differential FH is the best way to gain rank. I always prefer it to navigate a big blank week anyhow.

Good point on using it to navigate what could be a big blank week; it tends to be thought of as the chip to use for a good double game week, but (as far as I'm concerned anyway) that never tends to work out as well as I hoped!

Yes I’m still without Rashford so him and a few others might be worth a WC. I’m pretty sure I’d transfer my way through this if we didn’t get another wc for the World Cup. It’s a bit frustrating as I’m happy with my team and yet I feel pressure to change it.

I'm giving it some serious thought too - bar Sanchez, I've got those players in too. Was thinking of WC soon-ish anyway. It may still look different to a WC I'd have done without any uncertainty over W8, but not much, and there are still players I will be keeping and subbing for W8.

WC away from this team? Definitely not.

Should postponements go ahead as-is, there's only 5 in your XI without a match, but Neco & Harrison can come in for you. With 2 FTs you could sell Salah/Trent for a DEF/MID of choice. Then you could choose to sell Gross for a hit.

How different from that team would your WC look anyway? Surely pretty similar.

i don't think policing football on a Saturday in London is an issue. It's more likely to be a timing issue on the Sunday.

Then it's also a commercial issue with Sky Sports so expect prevarication into the week.

Based on other large events, there’s going to be road closures and loads of barriers and facilities getting put in from the previous evening and all through the night. Not impossible to do the match too but logistical consideration with 10s of thousands of fans too.

It's over 3 miles from Westminster and London has an underground of course.

I just think it's not timely to have a big sporting occasion the day before the funeral and on a Sunday too.

I think you'll find that your view is completely wrong. Around 10,000 police officers are likely to be on duty in London EVERY DAY leading up to the Queen's funeral.

            Great avatar though.

Is there a chance one or two London games can go ahead or would it be all or nothing for fairness?

Spurs game is on Saturday so more time to the funeral so perhaps its ok?

Brentford capacity 17k so approx 100 police required as low risk so could be ok?

Chelsea against Liverpool is probably a higher risk game with a significant police requirement so this game could go if any?

I know nobody knows but just interested what people think will happen?

I agree it is not likely to be purely logistics. Despite the best efforts of some, there are still plenty of police in the Met to cover a football match on Saturday, two on Sunday and a very, very large public gathering on Monday. On the Monday event they are likely to pull in some police from other forces anyway.

As above, I don't think any football games will go ahead this weekend. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but you asked what people thought.

The Queen's coffin will be lying in state from Tuesday/Wednesday. You have Heads of State arriving in theor droves from around the world. The security operation will be unprecedented. Have you ever seen the security around the President of the United States?

They won't all be grabbing an Easy Jet flight on the Monday morning and hoping they can hail down a cab to Westminster.

I expect that all police leave will be cancelled and officers drafted into London from all over the country.

The idea that they would also have to police thousands of unruly oiks at football grounds is fanciful imho. They won't admit it, but the authorities are very concerned about the behaviour of Liverpool fans in particular. The fact they are playing at Chelsea exacerbates this.

They could/should have played fixtures this weekend and cancelled next weekend's. But they panicked for the last reason I mentioned.

So I am working on the assumption of no PL fixtures next weekend.

Neco concerns me slightly as Forest are shipping goals but he is on set pieces

Emerson has good fixtures coming up so could be gold at 4.0 but possibly not nailed
