Harry Maguire gets so much stick, he's been great for England and was fairly good at United for the early start of his career there.

Spurs or Newcastle should be going for him

If he were available for the Europa League final, Ole would have won it imo. The team was so much better with him in it back then.

But he doesn't suit a Ten Hag team. I hope he gets a move.

He's too good to be 5th choice at United. Taking the captaincy off him is a way of making the move happen.

This is pure revisionism. We’d been in honking form leading up to the final and played terribly - 2 shots on target and only scored because of a scrappy deflection.

I think he’d be a success in pretty much any other team to be honest. Chelsea or spurs would do well to bud for him, he’d be amazing in italy as well

Why would we want Maguire when we have Botman and Burn for LCB who are both better.

      His confidence has been shattered.

Burn is deceptive, you have to be an extra stride ahead to make your play (cross/pass/shot) because he can stretch those gangly legs from an extra yard further back and get the block/tackle in. Think that is what has made him such a useful LB.

Maguire is a good defender. This often happens with the hyperbole that surrounds Man Utd. Players are either the greatest or the worst. See also McFred and DDG.

The main problem for Maguire moving is his wages. Isn't he on over £200k a week? Who is going to buy him?

Can't see Newcastle being interested. In Botman they have one of the best CBs in the league and Schar isn't too far behind. I think Newcastle will buy a right CB, but more likely to be someone younger to replace Schar longer term.

Why should Newcastle be going for him? He's nowhere near as good as Botman or Schar (or Burn for that matter) so he'd be joining as 4th choice at best. He also struggles to play out from the back, which is how we play. Nothing about Maguire suggests he should be joining Newcastle

You need to be able to pass the ball to play out from the back, but nevertheless, he’s also better at dribbling than Schar, with almost double the progressive carries, fewer miscontrols and fewer dispossessions (all per 90 stats).

Yeah, he gets pilloried for individual errors that lead to goals conceded. But to be fair, many of them were due to team mates being out of position or DDG letting him down. Nevertheless, he's also partly culpable in having less-than-stellar decision-making. He doesn't deserve the oppobrium, but at the same time, he's not good enough for United's first team.

Away from my computer but I would assume worse than Martinez and Lindelof, better than Varane (who isn’t especially great with the ball).

Botman has better pass completion overall, and in particular with medium and long passes. Also better xG and xA per 90, as well as more passes into penalty area, less passes blocked

Schar also has better progressive passes, progressive passes received, more passes into the final third, more through balls, more passes into penalty area, more passes that lead to a shot attempt, more goal creating actions, xG, xA

That's in comparison to Maguire and per 90 minutes. Not sure then how Maguire "clears both" when comparing passing and progression (with progression i assume you're just referring to carrying the ball forward).

Talking strictly 'playing out from the back' (something you said Maguire is poor at) - PL stats only

                PASS COMPLETION - TOTAL
                Maguire - 86.4% (6,940 attempts)
                Botman - 86.5% (1,765 attempts)
                Schar - 72.9% (5,301 attempts)

PASS COMPLETION - SHORT + MEDIUM
                Maguire - 90.9% (5,667 attempts)
                Botman - 90.7% (1,472 attempts)
                Schar - 84.5% (3,654 attempts)

                PROGRESSIVE CARRIES
                Maguire - 1.3 p90
                Botman - 0.23 p90
                Schar - 0.87 p90

                MISCONTROLS + DISPOSSESSIONS
                Maguire - 0.48 p90
                Botman - 0.35 p90
                Schar - 0.81 p90

I'm talking last season, which is what is relevant considering that's when Botman joined Newcastle and Howe's first full season in charge.

Maguire isn't as good as either

Hence why I used 'per 90' stats for the Premier League only - if anything, including more minutes for Maguire gives Botman an advantage.

Imagine seeing all that and just sticking by your nonsense argument - stats show that Maguire is at the very least as good as your pair at playing out from the back (which is the only thing I'm arguing, not overall ability).

I used per 90 stats as well, which were heavily in favour of Botman and Schar in playing out from the back - so certainly far from a nonsense reply, especially when looking at a wide range of relevant stats for playing out from the back.

Guess goes to show you can use stats to back up anything really

You looked at last season only, in which Maguire only started 8 games. Judging a player from a bit-part season, the worst of his senior career, is just Facebook-comments-section level of stupidity.

Nice to see some positive comments on him for once. He's brought some of the criticism onto himself with stuff like his "do you know who I am" incident when abroad on holiday and cupping his ears after scoring v San Marino, but the abuse he gets is a disgrace. I hope he goes abroad away from the British public and media and rebuilds his career much like Smalling did. The irony for me is that I think he would do far better if given a chance now with Onana behind him, someone who can actually cover some of the space he vacates when he moves up the field with the ball, but it's too late now. I hope things work out for him

Chelsea were in shambles last year.

Poch is a very good manager. You see what he managed to do with a mediocre side like Tottenham, they were almost respectable for a while.

I'm not writing off a single Chelsea asset, personally got an eye on Mudryk who was very good in the U21 Euros. But I will have to have a decent indication he is a starter.

I can see my first 3 transfers all being to get Chelsea assets. On my list are:

        GK > Kepa
        4.5 def > CHE starting 4.5m
        Foden > Sterling
        Jesus > Nkunku

3 of these by GW5, I reckon - IF they start well, of course.

Yeah, I'm the same. Making space for them at various price points. I think it makes sense. Pre-season together with 2+ gameweeks of information should give you time to make a reasoned assessment.

Don't think any are worth the risk with tricky-ish opening 2 fixtures and we have no idea who the first XI will be.

Only one I would probably argue with is GK to Kepa. If it looks like Kepa is the Nr1 I would just start with him, otherwise wait till you wildcard etc. There will be plenty of other early bandwagons to jump on before we use a Keeper transfer.

I'm starting with the Brighton keeper - 2 very likely clean sheets to start with, while I assess Kepa. If not him, Flekken or maybe Onana. But those 2 opening fixtures for Brighton are being overlooked on the GK front.

Pools front 3 is going to be a nightmare to predict so at the moment I'm on salah.
Totally understand team looks more balance without him but just depends on the rest of your mids and who you want the most as there is a lot of players being mentioned but you can't have them all.
My team has basically a back three of ars, brig, new /brent this is similar to most .

My semi-plan is to start without Liverpool assets and go big on them on my wildcard. They have a terrific run from GW9 by which time their new-look side should have bedded in, and Arsenal will be on a tricky run.

    Not set on this team by any means and definitely need to work on, but intrigued at what others thoughts are on the current draft;

    GK: Pickford (Areola)
Def: TAA, Botman, Gabriel (Bell, Bayer)
Mid: Salah, Saka, Mbeumo, Douglas Luiz (Matheus Nunes)
    For: Haaland, Nkunku, Calvert-Lewin

I'd be looking for an alternative £5m midfielder for Nunes that starts, so would have 3 cheap but starting players on bench if needed. Just balancing whether to remove TAA and spend extra money on midfield or whether he's worth keeping.

Monitoring Kane's situation at Spurs as well as tempted to bring him in for Haaland to then improve midfield.

      Looks great.

    Does anyone like this…?

    Flekken
    Trent / Shaw / Porro / Estu
    Salah / Saka / Mbuemo / Gross / Eze
    Haaland

    Areola / Cash / 4.5s

Trent, Salah and Haaland with a front 6 of penalty takers….

It's not terrible, bit I feel like trent to a 4.5 or 5.0 allows that midfield to be upgraded nicely
