Pre-Season

FPL midfielders deployed in defence while Liverpool score seven

Two Fantasy Premier League midfielders were deployed as defenders in their respective clubs’ first pre-season matches.

Those hoping to sign either Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) or Artur Masuaku (£4.5m) will be disappointed to see their how managers look set to use them this season, although of course it’s early days just yet.

Elsewhere, there was some experimentation at Southampton and Liverpool ran wild at Chrester, while some of the bargain bucket options at Fulham found the net against Crawley.

FULHAM 4-2 CRAWLEY TOWN

Despite being classified as a midfielder in FPL, Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) was deployed as a left-back as Fulham beat Crawley 4-2 in their first pre-season fixture.

The 18-year-old was not involved in any of the goals but did threaten with his crosses into the box.

Crawley took the lead through Ollie Palmer in the ninth minute but Mattias Kait soon equalised after latching onto an insightful Stefan Johansen (£5.5m) pass.

After a complete rotation of all 11 players at half-time Floyd Ayite (£4.5m), playing on the flanks of a 4-3-3, scored a 25-yard free-kick.

A Tom Cairney (£5.0m) corner was then headed in by Marcelo Djalo before Rui Fonte (£4.5m) played in Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m), also playing as a wide-forward, to make it 4-1.

Thomas Verheydt lobbed Taye Ashby-Hammond shortly after as Crawley pressed late on.

FULHAM FIRST-HALF XI (4-3-3): Rodak; R Sessegnon, Jenz, Odoi, Christie; Johansen, O’Riley, de la Torre; Thorsteinsson, Kait, Kamara.

FULHAM SECOND-HALF XI (4-3-3): Ashby-Hammond; S Sessegnon, Ream, Djalo, Fossey; Francois, Cisse, Cairney; Kebano, Fonte, Ayite.

FC Winterthur 3-2 West Ham United

Artur Masuaku (£4.5m) played at left-back as Andy Carroll (£5.5m) missed a penalty in West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to FC Winterthur on Sunday.

Masuaku has been reclassified as a midfielder in FPL this season after he spent some time operating as a left-winger in 2017/18. However, 45 minutes spent back in defence before being replaced at half-time by Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m) in Switzerland will likely curtail any interest in the player, in spite of his low price.

Leading the line for the first of two XIs that were entirely swapped at the interval, Carroll did find the net in the match, though. Edimilison Fernandes (£4.5m) played a ball across the six-yard box in the 33rd minute for the striker to slot home on the line and equalise.

The Hammers had fell behind in the 25th minute when Calla stole a yard on Masuaku in the box and headed past Adrian.

The hosts regained the lead in the 39th minute when a ball over the defence was slotted into the net by Manuel Sutter.

It was right-back Pablo Zabaleta (£4.5m) who won the penalty in the 43rd minute before Carroll’s effort was saved.

Winterthur extended their lead to 3-1 in the second-half when Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) undercooked his cushioned header back to goalkeeper Nathan Trott, which was pounced upon by Gele.

Forward Jordan Hugill (£5.0m) was fouled in the box with five minutes to go and this time Mark Noble (£5.0m) dispatched the penalty.

Although part of the training group in Switzerland, Michail Antonio (£7.0m) and Winston Reid (£4.5m) missed out on the match as they continue rehabilitation from hamstring and knee injuries respectively, while Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) was unavailable too, having suffered a minor groin injury.

WEST HAM FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Adrian; Masuaku, Rice, Oxford, Zabaleta; Coventry, Obiang; Holland, Fernandes, Haksabanovic; Carroll.

WEST HAM SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Trott; Fredericks, Diop, Ogbonna, Byram; Noble, Cullen; Snodgrass, Browne, Samuelsen; Hugill.

FC Schalke 04 3-3 Southampton

Southampton experimented with three at the back as they drew 3-3 with Schalke in China on Thursday.

Yevhen Konoplyanka put Schalke ahead in the 21st minute as his deflected shot looped over goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (£4.5m).

Good hold-up play from Charlie Austin (£6.0m) on the stroke of half-time got Southampton back into the game. He received the ball on the edge of the box and found Nathan Redmond’s (£5.5m) advancing run beyond him, who slotted home to equalise.

The Saints took the lead just after half-time when a brilliant sweeping cross-field ball from Jordy Clasie was collected by Harrison Reed (neither player in FPL yet) on the right-flank. He shrugged of the attention of a defender and poked under the goalkeeper for 2-1.

Suat Serdar equalised for Schalke shortly after, a powerful strike from range just out of Fraser Forster’s (£4.5m) reach.

Reed turned the provider for Southampton’s third, his short pass in the box teed up Jake Hesketh’s curling shot from just outside the area, deflected into the net by Benjamin Stambouli.

Schalke struck late to salvage a draw as Forster was beaten from range again, this time by Steven Skrzybski.

SOUTHAMPTON FIRST-HALF XI (3-5-2): McCarthy, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Targett, Armstrong, Lemina, Hojberg, Long; Redmond, Austin.

SOUTHAMPTON SECOND-HALF XI (3-5-2): Forster; McQueen, Valery, Romeu; Sims, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Hesketh, Reed; Gabbiadini, Gallagher.

CHESTER 0-7 LIVERPOOL

Fabinho (£6.0m) and Naby Keita (£7.5m) were involved as Liverpool started their pre-season campaign with a routine 7-0 win over Chester.

The new pair did not play together though, each one used in differing line-ups used in the first and second halves.

Harry Wilson scored twice, in the 40th and 47th minute to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead at half-time, Alberto Moreno (£4.5m) and Curtis Jones getting the assists.

After the complete rotation of the starting XI, James Milner (£5.5m) scored a second-half penalty and Daniel Sturridge (not yet in FPL) slotted home after Naby Keita (£7.5m) put pressure on the Chester defence.

Ryan Kent smashed in a fifth from the left-flank before Milner’s flick in the box was driven into the bottom corner by Danny Ings (£5.5m). Sturridge rounded off the route by bending in an effort from the edge of the box.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Karius; Moreno, Phillips, Gomez, Clyne; Jones, Fabinho; Wilson, Solanke, Woodburn; Origi.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI: Ward; Robertson, Klavan, Phillips (Chirivella), Camacho, Milner, Keita, Kent, Ojo, Ings, Sturridge.

His conversion rate last season was 22.3%, his best ever. It was the highest in the league and significantly higher than Kane’s which was an average 16%

It is a valid argument. Kane scored more points, you don't win FPL by having players that have good goals to minutes stats. You think Aguero will play more this season? If anything he will play less. He's not getting any younger and he's a lot slower than he used to be

              • 7 Years

Your post was not about Aguero being a rotation threat. It was about Aguero not looking his old great self in a long long time. Which is false, proved clearly by his stats.

"He's not getting any younger and he's a lot slower than he used to be" - Yet he was the most clinical striker in the league last season.

OK let me re-phrase. Lost his pace, older, surely to miss out on more game time.

I think his pace is fairly irrelevant, Kane is as slow as you can be while being a pro footballer but still slams them in the net.

He played the majority of games he was fit for last season and Jesus went further in the WC. Just until GW3 or 4 I think he's the best premium option.

              Then hopefully Aubameyang.

Your post and your counter argument doesn't makes sense. It sounds redundant.

First decide, if you want to question Kun's quality and FPL credentials or you're just a blatant hater? If you're the latter then not much one can do to convince you otherwise.

        (4.5/4.0 vs 4.5/4.0)

Typically I'd go for a 4.5, but I think Leno and Karius might be worth the extra 0.5 this year. The problem is that they take slots from their teams. So I think only Pickford is left, and his good fixtures could be worth 0.5, but I'm not convinced.

        So I'll likely go for Fabianski + Bettinelli, 4.5 + 4.0, or Karius + 4.0.

Mkhi, Ramsey and Auba are great options. If I don't start with all three, I want space for them. There's also Lacazette, Ozil and the entire defence which could be great value come GW3, too.

Fair enough, I can't see really ever see myself having three, or even two midfielders that aren't City, or Liverpool players. They're all potentially good, but if all five of them are in form that would surely coincide with Arsenal running away with the league...which isn't happening, especially when their only world cup winning player will be on the bench again

The players and their prices dictate the game to me, though. You can't have all the firing City assest with no consequesces in your team. Cheap players don't have to score 2 goals a week. Premium players have perform well for you to get any points!

Besides I currently have premiums in Auba, Firmino Aguero, Silva, Mahrez and Mendy (and Mkhi). Just have to drop one for Ramsey and I could afford Kane over one of the forwards 😀

I'm gonna switch him out. I love Talisman Theory though, which is ultimately what I think he'll become for them so I daresay he'll go back in once their fixtures improve.

Mahrez could go to City where he'd be rotated. Silva will get rotated due to his age, Pep said. Duelofeu is fairly punty. TAA mightn't start for the first week or two.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

That's why I got Mahrez. Silva is still Silva. Rotation can't hurt that much with a decent first sub (and hopefully better third and fourth). Besides, Mahrez and Silva are likely to start GW1 and start rotating a bit later. I'm happy to downgrade one to Ramsey in order to find Kan or something in GW3 🙂

Deu seems to be the least punty pick for me. He's very popular around here because he's nailed and probably Watford's most attacking threat when he's been on the pitch.

If TAA doesn't start, Mkhi comes on. But I could always get Clyne instead, or both if I downgrade Karius 🙂

          Thanks for the input

Mendy TAA and Schlupp all rotation risks. Same with Delo, and Mahrez, and Silva, and Puncheon.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

Well whether or not Schlupp is a rotation risk can't really be debated right now. We could be saying he's nailed come GW3 or 4. Just gotta wait and see for now.

See above about TAA and Silva.

Deu is an injury risk at worst. Can't see why on earth he'd be rotated.

Puncheon won't likely stay in my team tbh. Looking for better options that can cover Deu's poor fixtures, and willing to upgrade to a 5,0 in necessary. (The whole team will likely change anyway haha)

Like Deu, TAA a worry though. Would have him in in a flash if nailed early, Figure he will be nailed in time but not sure at the start ?

I'm not expecting naildness from TAA. People owned Bavies through non-nailedness the entire season last season at 5.5 😮 At 5.0, he's good enough value when he plays, and you can back him up with 4.5 or Clyne, or whatever your bench is.

I always have had a keen interest in the goings on across the water with our closest neighbors. It always delivers great drama in that house and i respect and admire the procedures custom and rule of law they stand up for.

I kind of envy the UK for being brave enough to try and go it alone any throw off the European yoke.At least their politicians are willing to listen to the will of the people and go for Brexit rather than keep making the people vote until they get the answer they want like they do here in Ireland.

Cheers. Feel Pogba is worth a punt because of the Fred signing plus decent fixtures. Bench is fairly poor but with De Gea there, I only need fodder for my other keeper slot. Schindler and Cedric rotate really well while Masuaku is arguably the best of the 4.5 bench fodder mids. Peltier is fodder too though he may play.

So for now I'm avoiding any semi finalists until I know more so this is my current draft:

    Fabianski, McCarthy
    Robertson, Douglas, Cedric, Daniels, Wan-Bissaka
    Salah, Sanchez, Jota, Deulofeu, Masuaka
    Aguero, Firmino, King

With the plan of integrating some semi-finalists in like De Bruyne, Trent, Mendy. Alongside probably Aubameyang when Jesus starts coming back into the picture probably and Kolasinac (if nailed) when the first couple of poor Arsenal fixtures are out the way and we've assessed their defence.

How is this looking so far? Appreciate any feedback!

Think how us Liverpool fans feel. Issue is Klopp doesn't feel like buying a £30m keeper would be enough of an upgrade for the money (and he's probably right). The two we were interested in Alisson and Oblak we've been priced out of because Roma are being absurd wanting like £80m for Alisson when he's worth about £50m. For Oblak we'd have to pay him £90m for his buy-out which I do personally think he's worth but we don't have the spare funds to just spend £90m in one big lump sum. I think if we could buy Oblak over instalments then it'd be a lot more likely but from the sounds of it, it'd have to be £90m in one sum which I don't think we can afford due to other long term projects we want to invest in (apparently).

Playes OOP by the end of the season (though Del will play there now most likely), but was great as a wing back too. Will he be nailed on RWB or RB?

Watford have got 12 defenders listed so far this season, 3 are right backs. Looks like Kiko will have extra competition for the RB/RWB spot. Janmaat is still there and they recently signed Marc Navarro.

Feedback on this team would be much appreciated

    Leno
    Azpilicueta - Bailly - Arnold - Cedric
    Salah - Sane - Jota - Matic
    Aguero - Aubameyang

    Button - Dunk - Romeu - Quaner

Not bad. Not sure about the Matic pick and your bench isn't great

I couldn't find any quality at 5m so just thought i'd go for Matic to get a clean sheet point most weeks.

Probably one to avoid early on as late as Belgium have got in WC.
