Meet the Manager #5 – Matthew Jones (aka Numb)

In what proved to be a perfectly timed Meet the Manager interview, we caught up with Matthew Jones (known as Numb round these parts) just days after he reached the summit of our Live Hall of Fame for the first time.

In this series, we meet a manager with an exceptional track record in their Fantasy Premier League and find out their strategies for success as well as gathering some top tips for the current campaign.

With seven top 10,000 finishes, including three in the top 500, across his previous nine seasons, Matthew has indeed had an exceptional career.

In fact, his lowest ever finish is still a highly respectable 15,353 and with a rank just outside the top 20k this time around he looks on course for another memorable season.

During the interview, he reveals how patience has proved a virtue, including during this campaign with the bulk of his Gameweek 1 team still in place as he prioritises avoiding hits and swerving short-term bandwagons.

Matthew (FPL team link here) also explains how his rigid, four-stage preparation each week has been key to his success. This strategy also helped him pull off perhaps his greatest achievement, leaping from 2,993,511 in the overall rankings in Gameweek 5 last season to the edge of the top 10,000 by the close of the campaign.

The chat with Matthew is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

So who's getting KdB in on WC? I had him in GW1. Gutted about his injury.

      • 9 Years

Kane currently offers worse value than Kun but he seems assured of minutes. IF he maintains his minutes you have to think the potential is there for greater returns. Kun is scoring pretty much what you'd expect given he's playing 2/3 of each game.

Why not just TAA for the single transfer

VvD is not really in favor of late amongst top managers but I think his stock has risen a little given he is the only second Liverpool def with no doubts hovering over him. Those clean sheets look as locked in as a clean sheet ever had done. And attacking returns are possible.

I think he's a fair shout. Potentially a better value one than attackers and more reliable one than TAA, and tripper for that matter

Give penalties to someone who doesn't expect to take them and who time and again had passed the ball directly to the keeper this season

Mane has a better record. But I'd never put it past a manager to make errors in penalty selections. They do it time and again. See Rooney/Siggy, Mahrez/,Jesus

No-one knows tbh. We seemed to have a miss one lose them policy going until Mikner assumed full duties. Mane took one in pre-season, so may be him. Salah may need the confidence booster. Firmino has taken some too but he's missed a couple. Could be any of those 3, perhaps even a 'whoever wins it, takes it policy'.

isn't there going forwards better value doubling in man city Chelsea or Liverpool defenders than mid range midfielders?

      5 years, 6 months ago

i don't know about doubling, but the cohort of 6-6.5m defenders offer better value in most cases than the mids in the same bracket. that kind of pushes us towards 4 at the back - perhaps.

I mean people always say this. And it seems true, yes. But then keep in mind that defenders who cost 5.5 also outscore most 5.5 mids. And defenders who cost 4.5 also outscore 4.5 mids. So is it worth having a 6.5 defender and 4.5 mid, or the other way round? Obviously it depends on the player, and many times it is, just saying it's more complicated than comparing prices and it's difficult to compare prices across positions.

With awb and Bennett there's no need to double up imo unless get a gk

I agree. However if wolves defenders keep getting a decent amount of cs’s and occasional attacking returns then you could also have the money for mid priced mids. Currently debating this on my wc

I think I'm gonna go Bennett, then 4 defenders plus gk from Liverpool, City and Chelsea. Allison, Robertson, Laporte, Alonso and David Luiz

Honestly I’d prefer Patricio over Alisson and Doherty over David Luiz. It’s either the big hitters (Mendy, Robertson, Alonso) or just go Doherty, jonny even imo. Although I do like Laporte and think he’s worth the money. Alisson isn’t worth the money over Patricio

Wolves fixtures get tough though surely Alison will get a lot more clean sheets. less saves of course but still

In my defence I have Trippier, Alonso, Walker and Robertson and I was planning for weeks to wildcard over this international break but now I think I've changed my mind. I've been stupidly holding onto Salah because I've been waiting for him to get big points and I know its going to be the week I transfer him out meaning that I've missed out on Hazards points.

    Ryan Button
    Alonso Mendy Taa Bennett Diop
    Salah Hazard Rich _____ Kenedy

Kun's a very popular choice considering he's playing 60 minutes per match

The psychology of this is really interesting. A lot of people have expressed serious doubts about some other high scoring players because of rotation (full resting, not 1 pointers). But Kun is essentially being rested 1 in 4 games, without the benefit from the subs bench you get when a player is fully rested.

This isn't an anti-Kun pitch, it's just interesting those two different minutes issues seem to be treated differently

Kun is more popular and rightly so because of others not performing period. That and the fact that he is citays only trusted striker. Read what you like from that.

But interestingly the rotation fear seems to put many off Sterling and has been one factor that has meant we haven't seen the crazy re-investment in Mendy

I think a lot of managers (myself included) would love to get Sterling in for Kun. The current fixture swing just means most people have other pressing issues, like getting Liverpool players back in.

The Mendy situation is a little odd. Stinked of a bust up. Mendy wasnt exactly lying low when out of yhe team either. A worry perhaps.

Sterling has competition in mahrez bSilva and sane. Bsilva was dropped deeper due to KDB injury but now that KDB is back then you hace sane sterling mahrez and bsilva fighting for the front two positions either side of kun. BSilva is the safest of that lot as he can play deeper to accomodate the other two if needs be.

Kun is the only forward city have at the moment (jesus not trusted for sone reason)

Sterling has competition in the same way Kun does in Jesus. Basically none

I think you will see the reinvestment in Mendy. A lot of folks are waiting until near the start of the next gameweek... a lot of others want to know if he'll play so it'll be game after. He'll be back in a LOT of teams.

If Trip rises I'm selling for Mendy asap.

Agreed. 30 minutes per week of football is a lot to miss - especially in tight games when city run riot nearer the end.

I really want hazard in my team. Current team with Trip, Alonso and Robertson, Mane and Salah, and Aguero as expensive players.

I'm thinking Mane and Alonso out Hazard and Alexander Arnold in...

    What are your thoughts? Thx!

I am trying to crowbar hazard in also and I have a similar defence. I would prefer to sacrifice Trippier over Alonso and that means downgrading to Schindler whose fixtures turn after this week, nice price also or duffy.

Probably not, you could regret selling Kane before West Ham and Fraser has good fixture- I would do both for free next week. Main worry would be a couple more price rises for Haz so monitor that.
