The Scout Squad for FPL Gameweek 24

The Scout Squad panel return to offer their long-list of players to be considered for our regular Scout Picks feature, which will be published on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming set of Premier League fixtures in midweek.

The 72 nominations listed will be whittled down to a squad of 14 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.5m) ahead of the Gameweek 23 deadline at 18:45 GMT on Tuesday.

Joe, Peter, Paul and Az – who have five top 1,000 finishes between them – expand on their notable selections and omissions in the article below.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United can each boast two assets with unanimous backing this week, while there is plenty of support for Wolves players too.

Similar to the previous Gameweek, the value on offer in defence and up front can help free up cash for our Scout Picks midfield.

Along with the list of the usual names and players finding form ahead of Gameweek 24, I’ve added three differentials.

Sead Kolasinac could prove a productive option for Arsenal’s home clash with Cardiff.

The left-back has delivered six or more points in four successive matches at the Emirates.

Indeed, since his first start of the season in Gameweek 11, only Lucas Digne (28 to 21) has created more chances among FPL defenders.

Kolasinac has four favourable matches in the next five, which includes a visit from Southampton in the reduced Gameweek 27.

Ryan Babel impressed on his debut down the Fulham left flank in Gameweek 23.

Despite being limited to 54 minutes, the Dutchman fired three efforts on goal, more than any team-mate.

He now welcomes a Brighton defence that have conceded in each of their last seven road trips.

In all likelihood, this is the only time we’ll be able to put forward Fernando Llorente’s name for an article this season.

Although the return of Son Heung-min places question marks over his pitch-time, the South Korean’s recent comments on his own energy levels suggest that Llorente can retain his start at home to Watford.

Only Paul Pogba (eight to six) has fired more shots in the box over the last two Gameweeks than the Spaniard, who was on the scoresheet against Chelsea in the EFL Cup last Thursday.

On last week’s Scoutcast, I strongly advocated doubling up on attacking assets from teams with strong fixtures as a way of climbing the rankings.

Gameweek 24 looks a perfect time to put this strategy to the test with Liverpool, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers offering a wealth of goal threat as they take on favourable opposition.

Costing less than £17.0m between them, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford are already a popular attacking double-up. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over in Gameweek 18, they have amassed an incredible ten goals and seven assists between them in the league. They take on a Burnley side that is the third-worst for conceding shots in the box over their last six away matches.

Pairing Mohamed Salah with Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane looks set to be another fruitful move. The Brazilian striker gets my vote after scoring five goals over his last four league run-outs. Visitors Leicester look particularly obliging after letting in four against Wolves last time out and having the second-worst record for conceding close-range efforts over their last six away days.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ Diogo Jota (£5.9m) and Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) look an ideal combination as we look to squeeze as much quality as we can into our budget. The Portuguese midfielder has double-digit points hauls in two of his last four league appearances, while his Mexican team-mate has found the net six times and assisted a further seven goals this campaign. They host a West Ham outfit with only one clean sheet in their last six league matches.

Another tragedy underpins an FPL Gameweek and I’d like to express my sympathy after the events that have once again shocked us all – my condolences to the families of Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson.

On to happier things, and midweek games are a favourite of mine and many others in the FPL community. The Double Gameweek looks set to have people considering their transfers even more so than usual but before that, we have a single Gameweek to attend to and some fantastic fixtures to try and reap the benefits from.

Arsenal looks a tough test for Cardiff this week and the overshadowing events add an extra layer of uncertainty as to how Cardiff will perform. I think a comfortable home win will be likely for Arsenal and Sead Kolasinac, a favourite of mine, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has flattered to deceive recently, should reward owners with good hauls.

I also like the look of Wolves vs West Ham, where West Ham are in a funny situation with Marko Arnautovic’s U-turn and two bad results against Bournemouth and AFC Wimbledon. Wolves have all the momentum going into this one, and I reckon Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota, who have both scored vital last-minute goals recently, are going to be in the points again.

I also see great potential in the Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United games, with all four teams playing sides with suspect defences. Add in Everton versus a beleaguered Huddersfield side and I can’t see this being anything but a high-scoring week. Should be a good one!

Peter said…

In amongst the excitement of Double Gameweek speculation and, in one case, confirmation, we mustn’t overlook the importance of setting up our sides to accumulate bread-and-butter points in single weeks such as this. Of course, free transfers become particularly precious as canny managers start building for the future but my selections are solely built on form, the Gameweek 24 fixtures and, as always, a degree of gut instinct.

The budget takes a battering this week with no fewer than 11 selections drawn from the current top six sides (though none from a Spurs team which has a series of alluring fixtures but which I was struggling to trust even before Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Palace).

When Ole Gunnar Solskjær took the helm at Old Trafford before Gameweek 18, Marcus Rashford immediately joined my selections, albeit that I advocated a wait-and-see approach generally. Since then, he’s had more attempts on goal (27) than any other striker and has five goals to his name, a goal tally matched by team-mate Paul Pogba, who is equally as near-essential on current form as Burnley come to town.

The Red Devils’ latest victims, Arsenal, entertain a Cardiff side which recently shipped three goals at St James’ Park. I’ll be at the Emirates on Tuesday and fully expect to see the attacking combination of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette – with six goals and three assists between them in the last six matches – inflict further woe upon the Bluebirds. Sead Kolasinac’s attacking threat has been well-documented and I’m hopeful that he can add to his four assists for the season in a game where he may well spend more time in the opposition half than in his own.

In truth, very few (if any) of my selections this week are particularly left-field, though Lucas Digne can be thankful that Huddersfield’s form (a single point from the last six games) is marginally worse than his own side’s (two wins and four defeats during the same period).

There is at least a nice circular narrative in Diogo Jota’s inclusion. Like many, I included him in both my first Scout Squad of the season and my own team and watched in dismay as the Portuguese racked up blank after blank. I don’t expect his hat-trick heroics against Leicester to be a regular thing but as the excellent recent Scout article on the midfielder concluded: “Jota certainly has the underlying stats to back up his recent form.”

The Community Champion

This week’s contender is Joax2, who is currently ranked 19,831st in the world and who hasn’t finished outside the top 15k in his two seasons as an FPL manager.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last weekend, Athletico Timbo was beaten by our Scout Picks 70-54 with a 4-3-3 line-up of Alisson (1); Lindelof (2), Robertson (5), Bednarek (2); Pogba (8), Sterling (10), Salah (15), Pedro (2); Aguero (5), Deeney (2), Ings (2).

fclackless’s Gameweek 10 victory over the Scout Squad crew by a score of 77-44 remains the deficit to beat.

With Leroy Sané and Raheem Sterling both completely rested over Manchester City’s last two games and double gameweek 25 now on the horizon, could this be the optimum time to wield our Triple Captaincy chip?

City face Arsenal and their decimated defence at the Etihad on Sunday before travelling to Everton on the following Wednesday to face a team that have looked increasingly leaky of late and who shipped three goals at Millwall on Saturday despite having their first choice back line in place.

If City can win at Newcastle on Tuesday and then triumph over Arsenal and Everton in the double, then they could go just one point behind Liverpool in the title race, maybe even above them should Liverpool slip up.

It is therefore arguable that the likes of Sterling and Sané have got the form, fixtures and motivation to really come good over those games. Rotation is always a concern with City assets, but like I say, they go into this period already rested and could have another break over the next FA Cup weekend in mid February, particularly if City get a favourable draw.

Are you planning on playing your Triple Captain in Double GW25? Should we be considering players beyond Sterling and Sané? Do you think there will be a better opportunity to use this chip later in the season?

What are your current thoughts with regards to the Triple Captaincy chip?

I wouldn't use the triple captain chip on either just yet. However, Sane is guaranteed (C) for me in gw25.

Strongly considering Sane TC. I feel the rotation is being slightly overblown. Many of the key assets may feature in both fixtures, and they can all score points off the bench. Is it really any 'riskier' than TC on a SGW player later on?

Not more risky than captaining a player in a SGW, but it is more risky than TCing a nailed captain with better fixtures later in the season (should it arise) Kane, Hazard, Pogba would be guaranteed 90 x 2.

I'm tempted on TC'ing Sane or Sterling. Think I will let the NewC match deside it. If any of them play 60-70 mins etc.

Rotation is the worry with City so personally will likely wait for the Hazard double gameweek, he is a season keeper for me anyway and especially given his double could be BRI & WAT - or even a remote possibility of a triple gameweek for Chelsea that would be my preference.

Yeah, that’s the danger, a separate double for Chelsea could be the one to go for, but if Chelsea get knocked out of the cups then it probably doesn’t materialise, plus you’re relying on Hazard/Higuain being fit and on form.

      Too risky for me.

For me TC is for Kane, Haz or Salah in a DGW. Players you know won't get rested or make stupid 1 minute cameos in one of the DGW games.

Can't trust Pep enough to TC a City mid.

I know, merely pointing out the 3 players I would ideally use the TC chip on for the stated reasons.

Plus, I don't think those fixtures are as plum as people think.

Arsenal tend to save their best performances for the top 6 sides and then go and stuff it up against crap like West Ham.

Everton equally capable of holding their own and not getting blown away by City.

City should win both games but very possibly by small margins.

If they were playing Fulham and Cardiff or Hudds at the Etihad then yeah, fire up the TC chip.

It's a gamble at the end of the day and many will take that chance.

Pep liable to rest Raz or Sane worries me.

I'd captain Raz next week but don't think I'd be confident enough in Pep roulette to burn the TC chip on this one.

How many DGW's will there be?
Im consider TC GW25, partly to "get it over with" since I would like to use FH and BB in the bigger DGW's.
      Hazard TC also possible though.

There will be 3 (25, 32, 35). Therefore if playing FH & BB in the other 2 which have bigger upsides I can't see any reason to not triple captain GWK 25 unless you are happy to use as a single game week captain, Salah v Huddersfield the obvious option.

Feels like a trap. Reminds me of last season when Spurs had an early double game week which was disappointing. Great opportunity if you already have Aguero, Jesus, Sane, and Sterling in your squad, but I can't see taking any hits and turning your team up side down to accommodate them will be worth it.

With 2 FT's I can transfer Auba to Aguero/Jesus and I would have to downgrade one of Hazard/Salah for Sane/Sterling. Pep will likely rotate Jesus and Aguero for the two matches and I've been patiently waiting for Hazard to perform against BOU and HUD back on the left wing. Dropping Salah is huge risk with his ownership.

I think it's best to hold onto the TC chip for opportunity down the road for Salah.

Sterling (TC) is too risky IMO. He doesn't haul vs the big six and could be benched vs Everton - as he was in the midweek GW15.

I'm considering KDB as triple captain - or Sane, if Mendy is still injured.

There are no big six imo. There's the top 5 - Arsenal does not belong in that category and their defense is bad on the best of days. With all the injuries, they are reeeeeally bad at the moment.

But how many minutes would you expect someone like hazard to play if there are 3 games in a week? You are reasonably happy for a triple captain to get 75% of minutes in a DGW so that would mean 200 minutes or so?

TC Sterling is a strong possibility. He got 7 and 6 versus the same two teams in the reverse fixtures, respectively. He has 27 points in his last 4 games and he has registered attacking returns in 8 out of 10 home games played. He is very well rested and Arsenal and Everton have shocking defences. I will probably do it. Waiting for the optimal TC week has backfired many a time.

Triple captain Sane or Sterling seems a legitimate option for 25.

Always hard to pull off the optimum TC chip but I think there's a good chance of a return in both games and for the reasons you mentioned it seems likely pep will name a strong side for those 2 games against arsenal and Everton.

For people who already have a premium city player - might be worth considering a TC punt if you are feeling lucky and confident of second guessing Pep Roulette.

For people who don't have City premiums - It's that scenario of Kane v Cardiff gameweek 8 again. You should not be looking to get in players who you would want to drop 2 gameweeks later for the blank in Gameweek 27. Not worth so much hassle. Wait for rest of the season to unfold to get some other opportune time for TC.

There will be two more double gameweeks at least this season - and maybe 3 depending on Chelsea's schedule. Given many DGW teams will be in better form than Everton are now, and with a clear candidate less prone to rotation than Man City are now, why would you not wait?

My annual reminder to FPL that the term 'triple captain' is inaccurate and that triple captaincy should actually be renamed either to:

      1.5x captaincy; or
      The triple baseline points chip

      My plan:

      WC30
      FH31
      BB32
      TC35

Seeing how there probably will be two blanks i 33, there should not be a problem to cope with that ^^

Not extremely decided on the TC, tho. So I might just wing it with MCI in DGW25 if I fear that DGW35 will give less rewarding fixtures for top6 teams.

Oof, that’s a three week break between your Wildcard team and your Bench Boost team though.

To me the best reasoning behind using the TC in DGW25 is simply how bad the use of any other chip looks to me.
Not like you would want to FH to fill your team with DGW players (City & Everton), since the Everton players will play against City 😀 The WC chip looks bad due to the BGW lurking around the corner. The bench boost looks poor due to the same reasoning as the WC (only two teams with two fixtures). In a bigger DGW you can fill your team with DGW players, and your players won't play each other, and if they do then atleast it would be a more fair matchup compared to Everton-City.

Due to the above reasoning I will probably play Sterling & Sané TC in DGW25. After DGW25 I will focus on transfering in players with a DGW in GW31,32, 35 or whenever it is gonna be. I will then FH when those teams got BGW and BB when they do have the DGW.

Then I don't have to use either BB or TC in a single GW if GW25 and just one other GW end up being a double GW.

Pretty much the best post I've seen on the site this season lol. There will be 3 double game weeks this season (25, 32, 35). Therefore if playing FH & BB in the other 2 which have bigger upsides by process of elimination makes sense to triple captain GWK 25. Strong alternative would be to use as a single game week captain, Salah v Huddersfield the obvious option.

The argument for me is TC 25 vs single GWK Salah v Huddersfield. On paper Salah v Huddersfield looks best but feels a lot of uncertainty to wait till then though. So will probably go with City TC in 25.

What seems to have been barely mentioned here is that if you have all your chips left, this is percentage wise the only likely chance you'll get to play it on a double.

There will likely only be two other double weeks. And I will be saving my free hit/wildcard for one and bench boost for the other (which of the first two to play first for later discussion)

There is a small chance (around 25%) that Chelsea might get a third double, but drawing a reborn United in cup is certainly not ideal.

So for me, who's committed to the above chip strategy the choice is simple.

      1. Triple Sane/Sterling in 25
      2. Triple Salah in a single week
      3. Hope Chelsea get an extra double and triple Hazard, and if they don't, see 2 and hope Pool haven't won league by then

For me given the long rest just afforded to the two City boys and their position in the league. It's 1 all the way.

Kind of. He came back, played 30 mins off the bench, got knee swelling, then didn't feature. I think it's highly doubtful his next appearance will be as a starter, and even then it might be at least a week away.

Realistically, City could play two entirely separate front 6s in DGW25:

    Sterling Aguero Sané

    2. Vs Everton
    Delph Foden Gundogan

City's fixture at home to Arsenal is easier than Everton away in my opinion.

We've seen Arsenal concede 5 vs the other form team in the league & they now have a decimated defense with Sokratis, Koscielny and Bellerin out. I think it'll be mayhem.

I thought Spurs played well yesterday. N'Koudou and Llorente missed sitters and Trippier missed a penalty. Really Spurs should have won that game.

This was without Lamela, Eriksen and Son. I can see them doing well if they give Son a rest this GW. Gazzaniga was poor IMO (as he was in the EFL Cup) and hopefully Lloris will be an upgrade on him.
