Scoutcast Episode 287 – Battling

After a bruising Gameweek 29, the Scoutcast soldiers are ready to wage war on the remaining fixtures of 2018/19.

Helping them out is regular listener FPL Reuser, who has come up with a cunning plan for Fantasy Premier League success that involves collecting a strong armoury of sturdy shields and razor-sharp swords.

Joe, David, Luke and Andy discuss the best shields, which are high-owned players needed for protection against red arrows. Also covered are the finest swords, which refers to low-owned players with the perfect combination of points potential and solid fixtures.

Getting the right combination in place may well be the Holy Grail of Fantasy management that the Scoutcast has been searching for over the last decade.

Our merry band of podcast pugilists also find time to look ahead to the upcoming blank fixtures in Gameweeks 31 and 33 with a focus on the best Liverpool and Bournemouth assets to own.

While Az couldn’t attend due to other commitments, he did find time to drop by in the YouTube chat during this episode’s live streaming to set us straight about the Everton defence.

Elsewhere, David lays into Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo and reveals how a discarded plastic bag is now dictating his transfer decisions.

The Scoutcast troops also mull over the key decisions facing them in Gameweek 30, including the best differential ‘swords’ to acquire, the likeliest clean sheets and their transfer and captaincy plans.

Finally, this episode ends by flagging up the work of the charity Anthony Nolan, which carries out fantastic work saving the lives of people with blood cancer.

This follows the news from community member FPL Poker Player that his daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia last year. Although in remission, she still needs a bone marrow transplant. People can help support the work of Anthony Nolan by making a donation or signing up to be a bone marrow donor via their website

Everybody talking about the penalty, but what about the huge blunder by Buffon for the second goal? He is the reason why PSG got into this dangerous position. Their other gk areola is quite solid, don't know why they got the old man Buffon.

If Man U and Man C draw each other in the FA Cup semis and the CL quarters, they could end up playing each other 4 times in 17 days.

We need to hear Jose's thoughts on all this - since he has left utd have advanced to FA Cup Qtr finals, Champions League qtr finals and taken 32 from a possible 36 points to jump into fourth place

If the United one gets given every week and becomes consistent then fair enough, but there could be 10 of them given a weekend.

Agree about the defenders now but it has to be consistent.

When OGS talks about the man Utd way etc. it comes across so well in particular as he was part of an extraordinary time in that club's history.
It does feel that part of his success is his knowledge / feel for Utd.
When an outsider talks about a club's culture (no matter which club) it never sounds quite right/
Was very much the philosophy of the Liverpool bootroom theory.

THAT wasn't a pen . No f ing chance. Var has ruined two games tonight. Handball and offside laws arent clear enough for it to be implemented properly. It works in other sports because the rules are clear and when the two intersect the right decision is nearly always made. But not football.

4 professional refs couldn't agree on kanes pen against Arsenal,
the notion of ball to hand is just as unclear. The rules need to be rewritten

"Ball to hand" isnt even in the rules and never has been. The question is whether the player intentionally creates contact with the ball. The defender intentionally makes himself bigger with the way he positions his hand and thus creates the contact. Nothing controversial about the penalty.

It’s brilliant, there is going to be riots up and down Sunday leagues with refs firing out penos for that stuff! Can’t wait to get along to a few games! That’s where the real Benefits of VAR will be found

As much as the Porto player wouldn't reach the ball, the Man u shot was never going in. I think both were right decisions.

strange how all the refs are saying it's a pen and ex-players & others are saying it's not.
Would think one group should know the rules better than the others.

where's the debate? the people who are extensively trained and paid to implement the rules think it's one thing.
Ref's from one country, VAR official from another one so it's not even a football culture debate

Close but not exactly: operator (booth) > supervisor (booth) > match referee (field). All three have to be referees; all three must agree.

Not really. We are hearing this is what they are being told to interpret as handball, you would think they might want to pass that info onto the viewer/fan who fund the thing. If your aware of what to expect, it can be more understandable. What we need is the same thing to happen to an English side in the next round and see what the views are now we have precedent, don’t want to hear a hard done by comment

I don't like Man U, but it was a penalty.

He looks at the ball coming at him, his arm is not against his body and the ball hits it.

If you don't want to give away penalties, hold your arms by your sides/around your back and try to get your body in the way, the way Koscielny does.

      1. boc610
        • 12 Years

So hpld your arm in an unnatural position in order to not give away a pen when it just hits your arm while in a natural position? Which isnt supposed to be a pen...Kos and Luiz do that because they know the rules are a shambles.

Professional football players are paid millions of pounds and euros a year. You'd think they'd just learn the rules and stick to them?

They know what they're doing, they train all the time and they should know by now how to not give away a penalty.

So the answer is they do know where the line is, but try to blur it as much as possible to gain an advantage.

Things like 'ball to hand' which never existed just makes it all more confusing which works to offenders' advantages.

Yeah I feel sorry for someone who supports PSG. So soulless. If they were serious about winning the CL they'd buy some new centre backs and defensive mids that don't get shown up every time they play someone good.

They're like Arsenal under Wenger. Imagine all the league titles Arsenal would have if they played in France in the last 20 years...

Google translate thinks it actually says "How will the guy put his hand on his back?" (i.e. behind his back). And Urban dictionary suggests that PQP is more eqivalent to a general expletive exclamation, like f***! or pu** madre, etc. Correct me if you speak Portuguese, but I'm very suspicious. Can't find the second quote you posted, either.

Only have Pereira from Leicester, so that means no LEI attacking coverage. Been thinking of a mid as well, but might end up with Brooks instead.
