How Zouma’s future could impact Everton defensive potential

Everton’s defensive potential in 2019/20 could depend on some external factors.

The Toffees have already been targetted by Fantasy Premier League managers a team to invest in for Gameweek 1.

That’s because they top the Season Ticker for the first six matches of the new campaign.

At the time of writing, Lucas Digne (£6.0m) is sat in 28% of teams, signifying the interest in Everton’s defence for the start of the season.

He was a key part of helping his side keep eight clean sheets in the last 11 matches of 2018/19.

But Digne was not the only important member of the back-four that produced such an impressive achievement.

Alongside the Frenchman was Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma, who spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Goodison Park.

As things stand, the Frenchman is back at his parent club and was involved in Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly.

With Zouma’s future currently up in the air, there may be some who are cooling their interest in Everton defensive assets.

So the aim of this article is to assess his contribution to the Toffees defence last season so we know whether or not a potential absence from the team at the start of 2019/20 would reduce the clean sheet potential of Digne, Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) and the like.

I don’t think he’s going to be priced at more than Jiménez at Wolves who now has a proven PL record.
7.5m absolute maximum however I can see him being 7mil alongside Arnies price bracket. Here’s hoping

Not bad - no issue with a strong bench despite what most others will say. Everton very likely signing a new striker and other injuries, transfers, form etc means it is very unlikely to be your final team though.

I hope so, though it will cause selection headaches! I was so unlucky with him last year. I started with him, then Aguero took that shot on when he should have squared to KdB for a certain goal, then a couple of mins later he got injured (he wouldn't have got *that* injury if Aguero had squared, not that I am bitter :p )

Then I waited for him to get fit again, stuck him in again, and he got injured on his return! So he kind of burnt me a couple of times and this is putting me off, but he's such a good player and I would love an excuse to have another go.

I agree he might, but i’m concerned he might have his appearances managed (initially at least) as protection to avoid further injuries. Hence I won’t be going with him from the start.

As a vivid composer of my own spreadsheets for every scenarios i deem important, I have due to this years structuring of prices in the game, been investigating the Sterling/Salah-pairing for maximizing captaincies.

The more I tried to tinker with my team around them, the more frustated I got.

    Therefore I have this question:
"If Salah/Sterling is the midfield pairing that is likely gonna be template for captaincies, does it really make sense to have them both?"
I´ve looked at the predicitions for GW 1-15 and seems to be a captaincy pick for Salah on 10 occasions and Sterling for 5.
In those 5 captaincies for Sterling, he is only predicted to outscore Salah in those gameweeks by a total of apx 5,5 point.

With 99% of teams to be DEF-heavy, its gonna be tricky to navigate the premiums this year for MID/FWD, so maybe it would make better sense to just pick Salah as the focalpoint in midfield and then have some fun(ds) with playing around with Kane, KDB, Auba, Vardy, Son, Aguero and maximizing your value instead of being tied down with 12Mill for a non-captain in 66% of the games.

Definitely considering KDB & Vardy over Sterling & Deulofeu but Sterling will be in Top 2-3 for points this season.

      • 14 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

I have thought about this. The only problem is that Aguero is same price. And Auba and Kane are just 1.0 cheaper. KDB is cheaper but also for a good reason. So really its go with Salah as the only premium attacker or get Sterling. The only exception might be Son if he shows he can do what he did last season.

This has always been my thinking for several years and I always finish well but I have never quite broken the top 10k. I'm actually going to play safer with ownership this year.

Your strategy, my usual strategy, worked fine on paper last season for example for a Salah permacap, only for Mane to outscore him for the first few weeks and for Aguero to to fill in the gaps with some big scores. If you own "the other guy", even if you don't captain him, then you will always hedge those points, albeit at a 50% deficit. If you then captain the top pick whenever he is, on paper, the best option then you can never fall too far behind, allowing the rest of your meticulously-assembled squad to shine through and pick up the real points, the meat and drink of every gameweek.

With all this said, I see no value in having any more than two players above 10m. I think 8m may be my ceiling this year outside of those top picks. Every £ spent above a certain investment ceiling for any player, barring perhaps premium defenders, is wasted, and I find it hard to justify upgrading beyond, say, a Siggy or a Bilva this year.

      This works.

Until Sterling has a 16 pointer when Kun goes off at half time feeling his hammy and KdB only gets 6 points.

It's great not having Sterling and having extra cash, but it's what happens when he hits a patch of hauls that your alternatives can't match.

Personally, I think he's one of those rank killers that, if you don't have him, eventually your rank is going to let you know about it

From GW 3-10, A foursome of Son, Bilva, Vardy, King could rank up more points than Sterling, Zaha, Wilson, Defouelo.
With 2 of them on penalties as well.

I just really liking the idea of being able to transfer with the big hitters instead of tinkering with the fringe-players and punting.

Not sold on Perez (or Leicester aside from Vardy) early on, and would rather have Digne than invest in Diop considering how little I assume you'll play him. Otherwise looks good to me.

How's this looking? Constructive and destructive criticism both welcome!

    Ederson (Button)

    TAA Digne VVD (Kelly/Mings)

    Salah KDB Tielemans Zaha (Dendoncker)

    Vardy Jota King

    Latest 2 Teams, quite similar.

    Ederson, Button
    Robertson VdV, Digne, Ake, Diop
    Salah, BSilva, Siggy, Noble, Dendonker,
    Aubameyang, King, Locadia

After GW2 thinking about swapping Bsilva and Aubameyang for Sterling and Giroud (Depending on preseason and if he plays in the first 2 game weeks)

    or

    Pickford, Button
    Robertson VdV, Coleman, Smith, Diop
    Salah, BSilva, Siggy, Noble, Dendonker,
    Aubameyang, King, Giroud

After GW2 thinking about swapping Bsilva and Aubameyang for Aguero and Anderson/Antonio

    Thoughts please?

    Salah KDB Perez (Dendo Hayden)
    Kane Vardy King

What do you think? A or B?

    A) Sterling, Vardy and Yarmo

    B) KDB, Kane and Perez/Tiele

    1. Kiwi Don
      • 12 Years

Sterling vs KDB is my biggest headache as well. Sterling more explosive and better captain choice but KDB is a bonus and assist magnet and frees up funds to spend elsewhere. Might have to monitor pre-season closely.
      Probably A for me.

thoughts about some players that might just be the solution to the budget dilemma:

    1) Fanderson: good early form. I dont see him on any draft though.....
    2) Millivo: dont see that guy too anywhere
    3) Zappscosta: does he have any chance of being a starter?
    4) I honestly cannot decide between Siggy and Richy. the classic safe bet vs explosive differential option.
    5) is Fraser and King an overkilll?
    6) Murray is very tempting but his team is not.... any thoughts?

      1) was rubbish after a good run from around gw 9-19 then did absolutely nothing. Like 1 shot on target in 10 and I gave up counting
      2) Irrelevant if Zaha leaves. Living off converting the penalties he won for several seasons

      1. The Bad Seed

        1) Fandy has great potential. - if only westham can pin down a gameplan and not do massive rotations week in and week out. Should be more straightforward without Arnie. maybe not from the start for Fandy, but he'll get his time this season, especially as 7.0, he WILL be a player to make value on for a period

        2) probably true

      1. In my team for now. Had good early form indeed, just like Richarlison and Pereyra, don't see any of those three in other teams.
      2. We all tend to go for a bit more exciting picks...Mili is kinda boring and therefore under the radar I guess
      3. small chance I feel
      4. Richy for me, I probably don't have the patience to keep a Siggy for a whole season
      5. Have both in my team
      6. Not for me...still amazed by his amount of points last season though

      1. The Bad Seed

        1) im pondering him...... maybe nit from the start but he WILL make it in. I remember him from the lazio days, he's a beast
        2) True - last year he cost me 2 MLs over a 4 week period though, like Kiwi said, he is too dependent on Zaha runs
        3) if we could un-earth that, he could be phenomenal value, and a player to definitely make money on
        4) thats what i was thinking!!!!!!!!!!! but my lack of patience has cost me dearly last few years. which is very irritating.
        5) same for now....
        6) same for now....ill only get him in if the new manager and the return of Gross have a phenomenal impact on the team. which is most probably not true.

I am all for data - but I do think this article has suffered from a small bit of 'analysis paralysis'

Any article that seeks to clarify Zouma's defensive importance should clearly highlight the fact that:

In the 6 games Zouma missed, Everton kept 4 Cleansheets... And that it would have been 5 from 6 were it not for Pickford's brain fart in the last second of the derby

Gueye on the other hand - in the 5 games he missed, they conceded 13 (!)

In conclusion: Zouma appears eminently replaceable imo - Gueye is not

“... Zouma appears eminently replaceable imo - Gueye is not ...”. Personally, if Gueye goes I’m going to pass on EVE defenders.

I fear a similar outlook... Digne & Coleman with Gueye still on the books look too good to turn down though

Hopefully he stays to avoid having to make any tough decisions

That being said Zinchenko and Dunk are throwing their hats into the ring for places in a back 5... But the Everton fullbacks look to be prime FPL assets in the making if they can just hold onto Mr. Gueye for 23 more days until the window closes

Again the Kane and KDB vs Sterling and Vardy debate.
Better opening fixtures for Spurs but need to check how deep Kane is playing pre-season.
      I like A.
