Improving Burnley on FPL radar ahead of fixture turn

Burnley players are being widely overlooked by Fantasy Premier League managers as we approach the start of the 2019/20 season.

Not one of the Clarets’ first-choice outfielders sits in more than 2.5% of FPL squads at the time of writing, while their most-owned asset – goalkeeper Tom Heaton (£4.5m) – has been strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa.

The collective cold shoulder is warranted, with Sean Dyche’s side facing Arsenal, Wolves and Liverpool in the first four Gameweeks.

As a result, Burnley sit bottom of our Season Ticker until after the September international break.

After that, the picture looks much rosier: Dyche’s troops are catapulted to the top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 5-14 and meet only Chelsea of last season’s top six in those ten matches.

With the fixture turn in mind, our latest Numbers Game article delves into last season’s statistics to see if there is any incentive to invest in the Clarets’ players from mid-September onwards.

    King/delofeu/aguero
And change fraser and ake with perez and davud lui after 2 gw or

    B) ederson/button

Definitely B for me, you've got to have at least one of Sterling/Salah, & VVD is a waaaaay better option than Ake

The midfielders anywhere below 8m are such bad selection only 1 or 2 good ones at the minute.

Plenty at Leicester and options at Chelsea should emerge quickly.

Tielemans, Perez, Maddison, Mili, Zaha, Felipe, Lanzini, Martial, Brooks etc.

Pick 1 (or 2) and then just transfer to whoever starts the season well.

One or two players to monitor over pre-season:

Fraser, Anderson, Zaha, Maddison, Perez/Tielemans, Pereyra

Punts: Moura, Silva, Martial, Willian, Brooks, Gross, Redmond, Fornals, Graelish, Buendia, Almiron, Townsend, Trossard, Yarmolenko, James, CHO (i), Djenepo, Moutinho, El Ghazi

They are all very punty at the minute, but if any other them nail a starting spot then they are massively under-priced great value players.

Shape of my squad is largely there with only a couple of places left, what do you think starts the season in best from:

    A) Giroud/Haller and Laporte
    B) Vardy and Adam Smith
    C) Deulofeu and Maddison
    D) Wilson and Zinchenko

    Cheers all.

I’d start with D with a view to moving to A after a couple of weeks if Zinc looks nailed.

By that you mean keep Zink and downgrade Wilson to Haller or whomever is centre forward at Chelsea (assuming Abraham and Batsyuayi are also priced at 7.0)?

I fancy WH to get off to a flier - after week 1 that is - and if he looks settled I’d go Haller. I’m supposing that rotation will be a constant risk at Chelsea unless someone really takes off and then it becomes a no brainer.

Dunno what change getting Haller would leave elsewhere but I’m supposing there’ll be other moves on after a few weeks. Pogba and Son who are currently nowhere to be seen might easily be attractive for instance.

Which players do you have down as the biggest punts (could either score big or not play at all).
The £7 - 7.5m bracket looks very punty with Martial, Moura, Sanchez, Mkhitaryan, Willian and Antonio - IF they start they are all capable of double figure returns.

The £6 - 6.5m bracket has Mendy, Walcott, Yarmolenko and Barkley.

I know the majority on here prefer 11 guaranteed starters but I like the odd punt for a bit of excitement.

yes...Willian, Martial and Yarmolenko could be nice punts
Riskier, but maybe one of the promoted sides: Buendia, Robinson, El Ghazi

On my spreadsheet, I gave Spurs' defence a slight negative offset to account for their ageing defence:

    Vertonghen 32
    Alderweireld 30
    Tripper 28 (29 in Spetember)
    Rose 29
    Lloris 32

But they seem to be aware of this and are actively resolving it. Selling Rose and Trippier just before they approach 30 is very shrewd business, and good "soccernomics". The growing trend for clubs is to buy players around the ages of 16-23, so it will be interesting to see who they buy, and if any new FPL options can arise.

Really hope Spurs sign Max Aarons from Norwich (4.5m) to replace Trippier.

Seems plausible. But Norwich may well use the tried and tested he’s as good as AWB valuation (see Tierney)

A starting defender at Spurs, for 4.5, would be brilliant.

Aarons, Alexander-Arnold, Laporte and Robertson, for 25!

I don't think Poch is fully convinced by KWP, hence Foyth getting a couple of starts ahead of him last season, hope I'm wrong tho as he's looked fairly assured when I've seen him.

No chance he plays regularly this season. We've still got Aurier, and he'd get rotated with Walker-Peters and Foyth as back-up.

Going into the season with Aurier, KWP and Foyth as cover tho - I'm not convinced. When you add in Alderweireld probably leaving, and Rose / Davies at LB, there is quite a lot still to do, IMO.

        1. Pegboy
          • 13 Years

I'm not saying we won't buy him, I just don't think he'll play much this year if we do.

Agree entirely on the rest - the defence is the priority for the rest of the window. We've been stuck in limbo with all four of the full-backs not *quite* being good enough for a while, and it looks like we might bite the bullet and sort it out this summer, but it'll be a difficult transition. It's feasible that only Ben Davies remains and we end up buying Sessegnon, Aarons and An Other right-back (potentially Sakai/Atal/Alves). Chuck in another centre back (Saliba?) if Alderweireld goes, and I'd steer clear of Spurs defence short-term. Long-term, I think the addition of N'Dombele will sure things up and allow us to start controlling games a bit more.

It will level out over a few games I am going for it more than likely - it will be fun.

          Ryan (button)

          VVD-Robertson-TAA-Coleman-(Azpileceuta)

          Fraser-Sigurdsson-KDB-(Dendocker-Trybull)

          Wilson-King-Kane

I don't buy this cheering on defensive points 'is boring' narrative.
In the past when I had Double defences it was fun watching to see if a team held out.
Treble defence for a few gameweeks will be a notch up.
I see value in those defences compared to elsewhere.
Defensive players such as TAA are also viable captain options.
What you describe is just loss aversion the fear of losing something you could have had.
It is a completely different mindset to getting a midfield/attacker and hope they 'get' something different to not wanting to 'lose' something.

I have no problem with getting my head around it.
I even captained the likes of Ivanovic back in the day.

It definitely comes down to the, “each to their own”, way of thinking.
I haven’t completely written off the idea of spending big in defence and have a nice 4-4-2 to fall back on, but it just doesn’t sit right with me to start the season with all that money at the back. Would rather invest more in attack, then it’s easier to downgrade to a premium defender than upgrade to a premium attacker...

I can get him in a few weeks time if really required.
AIso, I see KDB as potentially better value
Captain choices will vary between liverpool defence and Kane for the first few weeks,
I will transfer out one liverpool defender gw3 and phase in the Leicester/Villa/Chelsea lads moving out Bournemouth players gradually.
To me I see Chelsea as great captain options once we know who lampards set team is - giving decent captain choices with thier fixtures and value players too boot.
I am never afraid to captain any player I see who (I think) will get the most points regardless of position or price. I picked Fabinaski/Anderson/Arnautovic last year.

Who do you have down as the most under-priced players?
I think a-the whole defensive category is £1m under priced.
Midfielders: Maddison, Barkley, Pogba, Anderson, Perez,
Forwards: Kane, Vardy, Wilson (possibly King but if he was listed as a mid), Andone, (would also say Lukaku if he was staying at ManUtd).

I didn't list the punty players on this due to uncertain gametime and starting position. Obviously an OOP starter would be under-priced value gold.
Someone like Martial, Antonio, Walcott, Yarmolenko or like you say Sanchez (who is on my watchlist).

With the lack of decent cheap options its looking likely that Salah will be the only player that I start with above £8m.
This hinges on him being a viable captain option for the first 9 weeks.
I think there is more value in having a strong bench and rotating players based on fixture than making sacrifices to fit Sterling or Kane in.
Hopefully I can have 15 players increasing in value who can them be upgraded later on in the season.

I’m sort of eying up FAnderson as an outside choice.

There was heaps of churn in WH midfield last time and a fit Lanzini Yarm and added Fornals makes it a minefield imo.

FAnderson would appear to be the most likely constant. Just don’t know whether the options inside him make him more or less attractive.

Listening to Hammer fans one reason he dipped last time was that he was the standard outlet from the back and so progressively got the ball deeper and wider. If there’s a more central outlet then perhaps he’ll receive the ball more often in attacking positions.

So if I do zinchenko and King instead of Laporte and Wilson then I can upgrade KDB to Sterling or put another way...

    A. Zinchenko, Sterling and King OR
    B. Laporte, KDB or Wilson

Not planning to captain Sterling as I’ve got Salah who I’d probably go with for the first two game weeks at least.

    Thoughts???

      Solid 12/13 playing players.

In that setup, I’d have King over Jota GW1/2 then move to Jota provided Europa isn’t hitting him and bench one of the Bournemouth players for City in GW3.

What do you expect Bournemouth to do in the first two games? 5 goals maybe? Wolves maybe 2?
10 vs 4 attacking returns for the two clubs, I would think King is expected to hit more.

5 goals would be way above average for Bournemouth in the first two.

They really aren’t goal machines when you look at last season - they were only marginally more productive than WH Leicester Everton Watford and Palace. Go back one more season - when they also had the attacking reputation- and they were average.

Bournemouth stand out because the attacking returns were funnelled into 2 players mostly

      Its a good team.
      Very similar to my setup.

"West Ham will be broadcast live in the UK by Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage starting at 1.15pm UK time and kick-off at 1.30pm. The Hammers will tackle Premier League title holders Manchester City in the semi-finals at Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium today, following the tournament opener between Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The losers and winners will then square off in a third/fourth-place play-off and final at Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai on Sunday.

Manuel Pellegrini has a fully-fit 23-man squad to pick from for Wednesday’s game in Nanjing, with Lukasz Fabianski set to make his first appearance of the preseason.

New signing Pablo Fornals, Fabian Balbuena and Arthur Masuaku miss out as they are still on a post-international duty break.

West Ham United squad: Antonio, Cresswell, Cullen, Diangana, Diop, Felipe Anderson, Fredericks, Chicharito, Fabianski, Johnson, Lanzini, Martin, Noble, Obiang, Ogbonna, Reid, Rice, Roberto, Sanchez, Snodgrass, Wilshere, Yarmolenko, Zabaleta"

    - Sean Whetstone, for Claret & Hugh.
