Son’s strong case as the best Spurs option for FPL restart

Son Heung-min (£9.7m) will reappear on the Fantasy radar when the Premier League resumes in June, having recovered from an arm injury sustained in February.

The South Korea international is the focus of the latest article in our series that looks at Fantasy Premier League assets who are returning to fitness this summer.

In the ‘second tier’ of premium midfielders behind the £10.0m+ heavy hitters, Son is Tottenham Hotspur’s leading FPL points-scorer this season despite having seen red twice, missed a penalty and spent eight matches on the sidelines.

One of a handful of Spurs assets who have caught the eye under Jose Mourinho despite the new regime’s mixed results, Son is not only a cut-price alternative to Harry Kane (£10.8m) but also a damn sight cheaper than the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.7m), Sadio Mane (£12.5m), Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) in the upper echelons of the FPL player market.

Now we delve into the numbers to assess his credentials for the season run-in.

WHAT IS SON’S FITNESS LATEST?

pro-pundits-the-fpl-state-of-play 5

Son sustained a fractured arm in the Gameweek 26 win over Aston Villa, although played on for the duration and signed off in style with a 13-point haul.

His manager expected him to miss much of the rest of the season as a result but the Premier League’s enforced three-month hiatus has now given the Korean a chance to play a significant part in the Lilywhites’ run-in.

Son, arguably, could be the fittest player on show when we do resume, having undergone three-week military service in his homeland across April and May.

The nature of his injury was perhaps a positive, too, given that it wasn’t a muscle issue that needs careful handling upon the restart.

Having returned to the UK, the midfielder has since been taking part in training with his teammates.

Speaking at the end of May and before full-contact training was allowed to resume, Mourinho said:

I cannot say in this moment they are ready to play because one thing is to recover from an injury, and another is to be ready to play football.

Harry Kane, Son, Bergwijn, Sissoko, all of them are fine. I think with a couple of weeks of normal training, when the authorities tell us we can train normally, I think in a couple of weeks, the boys will be ready to play. Of course, not in the maximum of their potential, I think nobody can do that in this moment.

WHOSE PLACE WILL HE TAKE?

Werner off to Chelsea according to Sky. As a Chelsea fan, I could not be happier to wake up with this news.

Very harsh on Abraham. Should be looking for a new club if he wants to be a top PL player as he will be benched a lot if Werner comes in.

Abraham is still very young and needs to gain more experience, he can learn with a top striker like Werner. He could be loaned out again, that is a possibility because Giroud and Batman are still at the club. I highly doubt it. Also Lampard could play both Werner and Abraham on top.

Lampard will never play 2 up front. Chelsea buying the wrong players IMO. Should be looking for a right winger and a CB. I am expecting Willian to leave the club and he will need to be replaced. Chelsea need to do whatever they can to get RLC fit as he is a massive miss in CM. He adds a lot of physicality, which is missing with Jorginho, Mount and Kante.

The way Alonso is used is stupid. He is one of Chelsea's best attackers (yes, attackers). When Madrid had Roberto Carlos, did they get rid of him because he wasn't defensive enough? Of course not. They used Makalele to cover him. Chelsea's best team is something like this, but Zouma and Willian need replacing.

          Kepa
          Azpi Rudiger Zouma Alonso
          Jorginho RLC Kante
          Willian Abraham Pulisic

Chelsea have a good bunch of youngsters to back up this team although Barkley has massively underperformed. If they got a CB to relegate Zouma to the second team and a Willian replacement they could have a decent back up team. Christensen though has proved too fragile to be relied upon and Pedro is past it so should leave.

            Caballero
            James Tomori Zouma Emerson
            Ampadu Kovacic
            Mount Barkley CHO
            Batshuayi

Haven't they just bought right winger in Ziyech? They also have CHO, I never remember which side he plays on though. But yeah I agree about central defender, with a really world class one they would jump on another level.

I hope RLC will be able to play a lot this coming season, he is really promising. Chelsea want to buy Chilwell so he would replace Alonso. I agree with you that a priority should be a CB. Koulibaly would be amazing but his price is really high. With William likely to leave, Ziyech and Werner arriving, Chelsea could play 4-3-3 with Werner LW, Ziyech RW, Abraham ST or 4-2-3-1 with Werner LW, Mount CAM, Ziyech RW and Abraham ST.

Lampard has tested 2 striker formations in the past, there is 100% still place for Tammy in the squad. Werners best productivity comes from playing off the left of another striker.

            I imagine it would look a lot closer to this;

            Kepa
James Zouma Christensen Chilwell (or whoever is signed)
            Ziyech Kante Kovacic Mount/Pulisic
            Tammy Werner

            or

            Kepa
            James Zouma Christensen Chilwell
            Kovacic Jorginho Kante
            Ziyech Tammy Werner

Obviously with players like Tomori, RLC, Mount, Hudson-Odoi etc in and out of the team

Scrap Jorginho from that second team.

Middle three need far more attacking strength than that and Frank knows it - Kov Kante Mount for me

Players you are looking at for FH DGW39?

    Mine are:

    Arsenal: Leno, Pepe, Saka, Aubameyang
Man City: KDB, Mahrez, Sterling, Aguero
Sheff Utd: Egan, O'Connell, Fleck, Mousset
Villa: Targett, Mings, Grealish, El-Ghazi, Samatta
    Others: Button, TAA, Lascelles

Going to have 1 GK, 3 DF, 5 MF, 3 FW to make up the 12 DGW players, so need a GK and 2 DF to make up the squad.

Can't see Lundstram playing both games. He is a bit of an action man in midfield and Berge is decent competition. Whereas the CBs could be more nailed.

This DGW is a massive trap, will be mass rotation, 5 subs per game and no predictability over who will be fit enough to start.

But of that list i would add Laporte, henderson, luiz & sane.

      1. diesel001

It could be a trap, but is there a better GW to free hit? Especially for those that have lots of chips remaining?

I'm actually thinking something like BB 39 with auba, oconnell, grealish, kdb and fleck (whom i already have bar fleck but assuming we will get 1 ft at least) and i feel this is probably enough coverage for the DGW's, can WC 40 to get rid of the dross and get a strong 11, save FH for any postponements or random big hitters being quarantined (which may be a thing with covid). Worst case can play FH last gameweek.

I'm thinking the same just because I have slow wildcarded to a team of 15 starters, (in case of an epic 10-game gw38) . Now I don't want this team for the rest of the season.

Looking at below - just throwing caution completely to the wind... I'd be amazed if they all played anywhere near 180 minutes, but not too bothered

      Reina
      Egan, O'Connell, Lundy
      KDB, Sterling, Ozil, Grealish
      Kun, Auba, Laca
      (McCarthy, Targett, Taylor, Fodder)

FPL is back & what better way to get reacquainted with the old devil than the soaring optimism of 11x DGW'ers - only to watch in horror over a period of days as that hope gets brutally dashed on the rocks of rotation or runs aground on the sandy shores of uncertainty

Kun vs Sterling vs Auba is a captaincy conundrum for sure

Why KDB not in captaincy debate? I’d think he’s most likely to start both games for City even if it’s a deeper role.

Yeah its possibly a bit of false economy/price bias in overlooking him for the more expensive three

Does KDB have pens for city now too by any chance/was that ever sorted out with Pep?

In fairness if he's on Pens he probably edges towards the front of the captaincy queue for sure

      City: Mahrez/Sterling/Jesus, KDB, Aguero
      Sheff Utd: Stevens, Henderson, O'Connell/Baldock
      Villa: Grealish, Targett

Also ones to consider imo are Trent, Abraham, Pukki, Alonso, Vardy, & C.Wilson

Superb player - surely his last season below 10.0, and possibly just a matter of time before the big hitters come knocking for a transfer

Wouldn't be out of place at Madrid, Barca, Bayern, Liverpool, City, Juve, PSG...

The fact that he is actually cheaper than Kane is still hugely advantageous for FPL managers

Captaining him GW26 with THAT end to the Villa match was possibly the high point of the season so far, up there with TAA's GW19 blitz for drama

His solo run vs Burnley wasn't bad either

Top player but think he's been quite inconsistent this season. A lot off games where he just hasn't been involved in play at all, most under Poch tbf. However I'd say its his worst season in a few years

I agree, performance-wise he's delivered quite a few stinkers. I think that makes the rate of FPL returns (18 in 21) all the more encouraging, the equivalent of a title-chasing side "winning when they're not playing well".

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 9 months ago

Inconsistent this year for sure - but I'd definitely give him benefit of the doubt in terms of how much of that gets attributed to the (alleged) dressing-room circus that marked the last throes of Poch's Spurs sojourn

Interestingly, if you take a benchmark of someone like Salah (186 points in 26 starts = ~7.1 PPA) Son can actually stack up reasonably well against him, despite those stinkers, and despite being a fair bit cheaper - and obviously having had to put up with the churn at Spurs vs. the well oiled machine that Mo gets to spearhead

i.e. Son has 122 points in 21 games (~5.8 PPA) - but adjust that for his two red-card head-staggers, which were arguably out of character for him given he had only a single career premier league red card before GW18 - this jumps to 121 points from 19 starts (~6.4 PPA)

But yeah he tried my patience from GW6 onwards - eventually getting rid just in time to miss his 8-13-10-2-12 from GW12 onwards - that 45 points in 5 games I feel is much more representative of his true FPL ability

Definitely a player I'd rather have in my team that not if I'm being honest though overall - I reckon the sky's the limit for him going forwards

6.5 points per match under Mourinho, too, despite some iffy individual and collective displays under the new regime this calendar year especially. As ever, points > performance (see also: Alonso, Marcos).

Yeah when you see someone creeping above the 6.0 PPM threshold it's usually an indicator that its time to sit up & take notice - as they start to sail well above the 200-point-season mark (on a per game basis)

He's a scary player in full flight - actually very reminiscent of CR7 in playing style for me, not a bad player to emulate!

Mendy, KDB and Auba are my only DGW players currently.

Do you think the more defensive move is to play my FH and load up on DGW players? I'm trying to decide which move is more suited to being top of the league and defending my position, rather than being too risky.

    All replies appreciated.

Probably FH in 39 is best strategy for you

I'm in a very similar position to you. Others have suggested a FH is a good way to gauge how teams are setting up prior to using a WC whilst also enabling you to take advantage of the double game week.

I'm wondering how many transfers we get heading into the first game week...because Bench Boost might actually be the superior strategy just like how many teams play BB the first game of the season - although granted teams will have had less preparation than a normal pre-season...

I think we'll know more once the fixtures list is confirmed, but with need to spread games out whilst respecting the fixture list, we may see additional gameweeks with some teams playing more than once.

I’m probably playing BB even if we don’t get unlimited transfers.
Have 5 DGW players atm and would end up with 7 worst case scenario.
All depends on your team really

I'm not sure that the doubles are particularly favourable anyway. Arsenal have City and Villa are well... Villa.

City will score lots of goals surely however we don’t have data which City players are going to be fit and with their wealth of options and 5 subs it’s even a bigger lottery.
For me Auba and KDB are safe picks and so are Sheffield defenders

I’ve got Free Hit, Wildcard and Bench Boost available.

What is my best strategy with this squad?

    Henderson
    TAA Robbo Chilwell
    Salah Richarlison Mahrez Barnes
    Aguero Long Ings

    Ryan Tanganga Kelly Mooy

You'd think so. Not sure about 'great' differential though. His form was crap before his injury. Could be a good punt though as we know what he can do when in form.

Yeah, I guess I mean FPL form, which to us is just points.

In real life he was still getting into the box lots, in fact more over his last few games than normal, but he hasn't been doing anything attacking-wise when he gets there.

I think there was a tactical change midway through the season which meant that Grealish was pushed further up. McGinn's points dropped off after that whilst Grealish took off.

Not really. If you don't know you don't know.

If you try to make a transfer right now you get a message saying the game is finished.

They'll probably open it back up once they confirm the fixtures officially.

For those who missed last night....

    Main thing of note...
    Avoid Arsenal for the DGW

City Weds night will knacker them out, then play again on Saturday lunchtime

The rest after first game back will be critical

    Breaks:
    City 5 Days, (120 Hours)
    Arsenal 3 days (67 Hours!)
Sheffield Utd 4 Days (92 hours)
    Villa 4 Days (94.5 Hours)

What kind of Logic is this? Players dont need more rest between games after a long period of rest. The start of the season is always very low rotation and thats after a long summer holiday.

    2. HamezMace
      • 9 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

With this logic do we also need to avoid all the players coming back on the first weekend, who also play the following Tuesday?

The quick turnaround of games, coupled with the players having about 2 weeks of preseason training, after 10 weeks off, means mass rotation will be almost inevitable.

The only solution I see is to go for players from small squads, who still have something to play for, with good injury history, and generally considered bullet proof.

      1. HuttonDressedasLahm
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

Well, yes. It’s going to be horrendous

My main point is no point wasting chips/ branch boosting if your player is unlikely to play twice

        1. HuttonDressedasLahm
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 9 months ago

          **Bench boosting 😆

But it’s the only DGW we’re likely to get, and the issue of heavy rotation will be in play for the rest of the season, so you might as well BB in the double as you’re probably still more likely to get increased minutes from your team.

The other option to get Spurs coverage for GW40, would be Auba (who may be rotated) to Kane, but I'd want Auba back as my captain for NOR in GW41

The Express and The Mirror have printed the fixtures hundreds of thousands of times for the whole of the UK to see this morning. The Independent is a broadsheet newspaper and the fixtures have been widely leaked across reputable sports journalist Twitter accounts. This isn't Watergate. Surely these sources are robust enough for at least a hot topic with what we know!

Good to see their are some decent games free on pick, I was half expecting Sky to put the 10 games that are played concurrently in the last GW, and the weaker midweek games that clash with better fixtures on there.

Not really a matter of principles. Just a matter of opinion. Not playing wont prove or change anything anyway

I know your replies are tongue in cheeck or how one would deal with a "troll" but i figuered id reply anyway

I don't think there is any other way it could be done, just be happy the game is returning, very negative attitude
