Is fit-again McGinn a viable route into Villa attack for FPL Double Gameweek 30+?

The return to fitness of John McGinn (£5.4m) offers an alternative route into Aston Villa’s attack for Double Gameweek 30+.

But is it worth using the Scottish international to go without Jack Grealish (£6.4m) and save some money? That’s what some Fantasy managers will be asking ahead of Project Restart.

And for anyone looking to invest in a Villa attacking double-up, is McGinn necessarily the right person to compliment Grealish in our squads?

We have performed another deep dive into the data to answer these important questions.

As this article uses large chunks from the Members Area, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can read it in full.

WHAT IS MCGINN’S FITNESS LATEST?

McGinn was last seen on the pitch in Gameweek 18, when he managed just seven minutes of the 3-1 home defeat to Southampton. He was taken off with an ankle injury, which an X-ray confirmed was a fracture.

That kept him out of Dean Smith’s considerations until early March when he returned to full training.

The Villa manager had planned to assess McGinn’s fitness ahead of the Gameweek 30 meeting with Chelsea, suggesting that the international break could be a good time to get him back up to full speed.

“John is back in full contact training with the players. It’s a boost for us and I’ll have to make a decision on whether he is ready to play a part against Chelsea. After the Chelsea game, we have the international break and also a break where we were supposed to be playing Newcastle as well. We will arrange a game for John to play and hopefully, we will see the best of him after the international break.” – Dean Smith, speaking on March 12

However, the coronavirus suspension for the Premier League put paid to McGinn’s chances of a March comeback.

Three months without competitive action will have helped clear up any lasting niggles from the injury for McGinn, but it has also robbed Smith of any chance to build up the player’s match fitness.

The international break he was hoping to use for that was also put on hold and such a long time without full squad training will have also been a stagnating factor in bringing McGinn back up to full speed.

While most of his colleagues last tested themselves in a Premier League match setting in March, McGinn has not done so since mid-December, roughly six months ago now.

Ahead of a Double Gameweek 30+, there are encouraging messages coming out of the Villa camp about McGinn though.

“He (John McGinn) looks back to his normal self. Everyone knows he’s like a little bulldog when he’s on the pitch and he’s certainly been like that in training. I can’t give him enough credit. I know everyone says he runs around and has legs, but he isn’t just about that, he has class about him as well. He’s one of those players you don’t appreciate until you play alongside him, and he’s like that in the changing room as well. Even the first day he came back into training he just gave everyone a lift because he’s such a popular figure in the dressing room, he always puts a smile on everyone’s face at the club.” – Jack Grealish

“Ginny is a great player and he has such an infectious personality that when he isn’t around the team, it does make a big difference. I think he is one of the players who, when they are on the team sheet, it affects the mindset of the opposition. He is certainly one of those players for us because he brings so much on and off the pitch. It will be good to have him back, for sure. We have got quality throughout the team but this period now has allowed players to come back and for teams to perhaps refresh their squad in terms of players that would have missed the season if it had finished on time. I think we are in a fortunate position in that we get John McGinn back. Teams around us will strengthen too.” – Tyrone Mings

    Hey everyone

Even though logic points to making use of the unlimited transfers and BB, I have my WC and I’m still tempted by FH.

I had chipped away during lockdown to get

    Pope McCarthy
    TAA Doherty Maguire Egan Williams
    Salah KdB Martial Mount Dendoncker
    Jimenez DCL Ings

    With something like 3.7-4 ITB

But if I use FH now, I’m wasting the unlimited transfers and wasting a FH further down the line.

I should just take the TV hit on a few and go with the BB this week, right?

I think it'd be advisable, I just don't see using a fh now being worth it just to keep value

I think its gotta be, losing unlimited transfers and a FH, plus being stuck with a BB in a single gw and then also not being able to WC out of that BB team just to save a bit of value just doesn't make logical sense to me. Anytime 🙂

Having exactly the same thoughts. It seems so counter-intuitive to ignore unlimited transfers but your squad is in good shape already - and anyway, who really knows about form after such a long break. What is less discussed is that people BBing and wildcarding the week after to get rid of the dgw dross are not only having to commit to doing a wildcard in 31 that you will still have in your back pocket but may also end up with a worse team than your existing one because of the hit their unlimited transfers will inevitably make to their tv. I’m top 1k at the moment, also happy with my squad already, so seriously considering ignoring the ‘logic’ and doing FH 30. Another point people miss is that BB only really adds on points for the worst 4 members of your squad who are either mediocre / poor sgw players or absolutely garbage dgw players. I couldn’t get a decent bench with any provisional BB when I fiddled around despite a good tv.

That’s interesting, thanks. Good to know I’m not the only one! And especially with a rank like yours.

I think the FH has been appealing because I’ve been using my transfers during lockdown, and now they feel like they’ve gone to waste and they’ll only serve to hinder me (should I ever tie with anyone, rare as that is). So I probably need to recognise that’s my own bias, and I feel like logic might win out and I’ll use the BB after all! Strong arguments for both sides, though. This game can be so complex!

I have to stress that I’m still undecided about what I’ll do. I just think it’s sometimes important to put the other case out there to kick back against the herd mentality that always develops and can sometimes make something seem obvious when it isn’t. Thinking for yourself and going against the grain doesn’t do anything positive for stress levels though, so that’s why many understandably prefer to follow what everyone else does. At least if one lemming goes over the cliff, they all follow together.

            Btw...
have you checked out your current team’s fixtures for gw31? Mine already look great without having to make any transfers, let alone unlimited ones. If they don’t, then this lessens appeal of FH30. But If you like them for at least 31 you will still have a wildcard and BB with a bit more valuable post-restart data than those who’ve had to play it already prior to 31, even if it’s just 1 week more data. They will only have FH left. However, you can make a counter argument that you want to play your wc early anyway to get the most benefit from it. I reckon wc benefits last, on average, about 6 weeks. Decisions....

What’s the rest of your team who are in the ‘starting’ 11. I’m
Guessing it won’t be nearly as good as a FH 11, all dgw or not.

As I said before, the advantage to a BB is only gained from the 4 players you wouldn’t be playing anyway. Theoretically would you not ‘start’ those three anyway?

Good team overall. I like it. But I would say your bench was Leno, Lundstram, Targett and Saka. I’m going to predict 16 extra points from those 4. I hope I’m proved wrong and you get more.

Disagree. I think he'll start both. Sane is recently recovered from an ACL - I think it's more likely he plays 15 minutes the first match, 30 the second, than being thrown in from the start given the severity of the injury. Mahrez, Bilva are threats to his minutes, yes, but both prefer playing on the right to the left. Foden will play centrally (when he does play, probably). Jesus is more of a threat to Aguero than to Sterling, and is in my opinion more of a threat to Aguero's minutes than the rest are to Sterling's minutes combined (for the first two games).

      Foden isn’t competition for Sterling.
You would assume Jesus and Aguero will share minutes.
And Sane hasn’t played for months.

But you’re right, it would be silly to think any player, bar Ederson, is ‘likely’ to start two games in a row under Pep.

Foden played right wing a couple times before the season stopped and Jesus has played on the left. Not direct competition but they can be used there if Pep feels like it.

I’d be amazed if he started Foden on the wing and benched Mahrez, Sterling, Sane and B.Silva to do so.

There is actually 5 days (Wednesday to Monday) between the City fixtures so there might be such extreme rotation as we’re expecting.

For me, none of Aguero, Sterling, KdB, Mahrez etc will play 180 mins, but all of them will play more than 90. So still worth getting them.

My guess would be Sterling and Mahrez starts vs Burnley and Sterling and B. Silva starts vs Arsenal.

Don’t expect Sane to start either, Jesus more likely to start as striker, Foden might or might not start one but even if he does, more likely to start in central midfield

Of course it’s impossible to know for sure, but Sterling is one of the most likely to start both out of City players.

Played the full 90 in the last 4 games and scored 3. I would guess so but as James is back they may put Azpillicueta on the left who knows. I’d say it’s worth the risk just make sure you have a half decent sub incase

Think a lot will depend on formation.

If they go to a back 4 then could be James and Azpilicueta in the full back spots.

He was such a good option pre-lockdown. If he starts he'll be great again potentially, but it's hard to say for sure.

      Chelsea fans might know better!

Only one man that knows and that is the manager. It is a punt that could pay off for the braver players or could be really annoying and a waste of funds for an important gameweek

I like it, have you considered Wolves attack. Personally I believe if you have a 2nd wildcard you could gamble on someone like Mahrez ahead of Fernandes but that team looks strong.

I'm in the same situation, what's your plan man? I've created a team designed for future game weeks in mind and expect to be punished during the dgw but could reap the benefits from game week 31 onwards against those in the same spot as us.

6 dgw players is what I have at the moment mate.

          Henderson* - Leno*
          Aarons - Boly - Lascelles - O'Connell* - Soyuncu
          Cantwell - Fernandes - Grealish* - KDB* - Mane*
          Auba* - Jiminez - Rashford

If I don't BB I'm tempted to replace Leno with Pope.

Imo bb this week does not giv you anymore advantage than doing it any other week. If anything loading up on 10 or 11 dgw players means you have to make drastic changes the next gw which will cost you hits or a wc. Hence I'm holding in to my wc bb and fh for later

    4. Johnny too hotty
      • 12 Years

bit late to party here I also only have BB and FH left.
Isnt the best option to use all the free transfers to plan for all GW's after the DGW.
Then we use the FH for this DGW and then effectively go back to our team (which is like a WC).

THen we are left with a BB whenever?

i am probably wrong.. please shoot me down

This what I first thought. I might be wrong but I think you would go back to your original team before covid.

Unfortunately even if you make unlimited transfers if you FH your team will revert back to your team before the game reopened. My plan is probably to BB because I like the Norwich fixture and I believe (if my math is right) that I have a player in every game but one 🙂
