Is fit-again McGinn a viable route into Villa attack for FPL Double Gameweek 30+?

The return to fitness of John McGinn (£5.4m) offers an alternative route into Aston Villa’s attack for Double Gameweek 30+.

But is it worth using the Scottish international to go without Jack Grealish (£6.4m) and save some money? That’s what some Fantasy managers will be asking ahead of Project Restart.

And for anyone looking to invest in a Villa attacking double-up, is McGinn necessarily the right person to compliment Grealish in our squads?

We have performed another deep dive into the data to answer these important questions.

As this article uses large chunks from the Members Area, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can read it in full.

WHAT IS MCGINN’S FITNESS LATEST?

McGinn was last seen on the pitch in Gameweek 18, when he managed just seven minutes of the 3-1 home defeat to Southampton. He was taken off with an ankle injury, which an X-ray confirmed was a fracture.

That kept him out of Dean Smith’s considerations until early March when he returned to full training.

The Villa manager had planned to assess McGinn’s fitness ahead of the Gameweek 30 meeting with Chelsea, suggesting that the international break could be a good time to get him back up to full speed.

“John is back in full contact training with the players. It’s a boost for us and I’ll have to make a decision on whether he is ready to play a part against Chelsea. After the Chelsea game, we have the international break and also a break where we were supposed to be playing Newcastle as well. We will arrange a game for John to play and hopefully, we will see the best of him after the international break.” – Dean Smith, speaking on March 12

However, the coronavirus suspension for the Premier League put paid to McGinn’s chances of a March comeback.

Three months without competitive action will have helped clear up any lasting niggles from the injury for McGinn, but it has also robbed Smith of any chance to build up the player’s match fitness.

The international break he was hoping to use for that was also put on hold and such a long time without full squad training will have also been a stagnating factor in bringing McGinn back up to full speed.

While most of his colleagues last tested themselves in a Premier League match setting in March, McGinn has not done so since mid-December, roughly six months ago now.

Ahead of a Double Gameweek 30+, there are encouraging messages coming out of the Villa camp about McGinn though.

“He (John McGinn) looks back to his normal self. Everyone knows he’s like a little bulldog when he’s on the pitch and he’s certainly been like that in training. I can’t give him enough credit. I know everyone says he runs around and has legs, but he isn’t just about that, he has class about him as well. He’s one of those players you don’t appreciate until you play alongside him, and he’s like that in the changing room as well. Even the first day he came back into training he just gave everyone a lift because he’s such a popular figure in the dressing room, he always puts a smile on everyone’s face at the club.” – Jack Grealish

“Ginny is a great player and he has such an infectious personality that when he isn’t around the team, it does make a big difference. I think he is one of the players who, when they are on the team sheet, it affects the mindset of the opposition. He is certainly one of those players for us because he brings so much on and off the pitch. It will be good to have him back, for sure. We have got quality throughout the team but this period now has allowed players to come back and for teams to perhaps refresh their squad in terms of players that would have missed the season if it had finished on time. I think we are in a fortunate position in that we get John McGinn back. Teams around us will strengthen too.” – Tyrone Mings

If Salah is out injured (missed their last internal friendly with a knock) does that make Mane more or less appealing? I'm thinking he's more likely to be on the end of the chances if Salah isn't around.

Liverpool play Blackburn at Anfield tomorrow so we'll know how precautionary his exclusion actually was.

And fwiw, I think Salah scores more goals than Mane for the run-in. He's only 3 goals (iirc) behind the leading scorer to win the golden boot for a third year running.

pretty darn good tbh, think it would be nice to get another city player in though; like attacking defence if more goals start coming in they may be nice differential as providers. I may go Pukki punt over DCL and not touching martial again would prefer rash/fernan but I am often wrong

    How is this BB team?

    Leno Reina
    TAA Basham O’Connell Targett Lascelles

    Aguero Auba Jimenez

Would want 3rd Arsenal player but not many worth it. Could maybe do Cantwell to Saka?

    KdB - Salah - Fernandes - Martial

It has been really tough to buld a BB squad30+ I can tell you.... man...

The thing is I have decided to keep TAA, Mané and Jimenez which makes it impossible to fit all of Auba, Aguero, KDB and Sterling....

    Not been easy.

I'm finding it hard for similar reasons (need to keep TAA and one of Salah and Bruno for the TV), if I can get out of it without any rank lose I will be happy. My 31+ WC and GW33+ and GW32+ FH teams look great however, so hopefully I can make up ground then

Hows this BB? Will WC next gw:
    Ederson Henderson
    TAA D.Luiz O'Connell Egan Boly
    KDB Grealish Ozil Mount Cantwell
    Auba Kun Jimenez

Got 3 city, arsenal and Sheffield which I like.
My theory on Ozil is that hes well known to go missing in big games so I figured he doesn't like crowds, so who knows, with an empty stadium maybe he'll my great..? 😉
TAA and Jimenez I'm saving value by keeping them.

    Thoughts?

I quite like Ozil as a gamble but not sure about luiz. I’d prefer a third city attacker - sterling or mahrez.

How much value are you saving in Jiménez? He’s quite an expensive single game week asset when you can WC next week.

      1. Tempestic

Could get Leno and Stevens instead of Henderson and Luiz but this way just uses all my funds.
Quite like the security u get with Ederson, just worried Sterling might not even see 90 minutes across the 2 matches with mahrez and sane back and 5 subs at peps disposal. Although the same logic should also go to Kun and KDB I suppose.

0.3, hes also up against WHU tho so I don't see why he cant peform.

Looks like I’m going against the grain by using FH this week instead of BB. During the preceding blank weeks, I set up my preferred squad for the rest of the season. The problem I see with BB is that you lose the value in players in long held players. For example .08 in TAA, .03 in Salah. If you transfer out enough of your current team to load your GW30 squad with players doubling up you won’t be able to afford to buy everyone back when you WC in GW31. This way I have my best squad ready to go in GW31 and still have my WC in case dire circumstances emerge or to set up my BB team for GW 38 when goals seem to flow.

That's what I'm finding, I need to keep TTA and one of Salah and Bruno otherwise I can't afford the team I want for GW31+, and that ties so much cash I can't come up with a DGW team I'm happy with.

You will only need TAA after Liv wraps up the title. With likes of Fernades, Son, Martial, Pulisic maybe even Pogba options ahead of fight for top 4. I am doing BB and keeping 11Dgw and Taa Doherty Jiminez

MY TV peaked at 110.0 in gw33 and was down to 109.7 by gw38 ... now it's 108.9
I'm keeping TAA, Bruno and Jimenez, otherwise I would loose another 800K - they are definitely players that I would want back

On the bright side, when I WC (next Wednesday), I can go cheap on the subs ... my gw38 subs were worth 19.7M

Same here - I wanted to keep TAA, Bruno and Jimi, but also Salah, Rashford and Wan-Bissaka. No way I could have done it with BB and WC. With FH I get them all back for GW31.

thank you. I thought he had been rested a bit and made some great appearances off the bench...and will most likely be in the starting team again? or not?

I think it’s a risk not worth taking when you can have O’Connell, Egan, Stevens, Basham or Henderson who are as good as nailed for two starts at a similar, or cheaper price.

With 5 subs, I can't see Lundstram not having a run out ... he's going to be in my team

Oh he’ll get a run out. But needs 60minutes to get clean sheet points.

Of course other SHU defenders are more nailed but with 23 starts and 2000+ minutes he’s on the same level of starts and minutes as ‚nailed’ Sterling.
He gets 6 points per goal and cost me 4.0, no way I’m goo to get anyone else near that value 🙂

                Who says Sterling is nailed?

Not saying Lundstram is a bad pick, especially if you’ve had him since GW1.
But I wouldn’t bring him in now instead of the SHU defenders I mentioned.

Sterling is picked as the most nailed of MCI attackers, I included it for comparison to show SHU ‚less nailed’ are still pretty nailed compared to other DGW teams.
I wouldn’t bring Lund now but will not get anyone better at sell price 4.4 so he has to stay and many will be in similar position

                    I think we agree.

If you have Lundstram already, keep him.

If you don’t, there are better SHU options than him.

I thought Sokratis marginally more likely, but it's a risk. Don't forget Leno.

Sorry to ask what might seem a stupid question given that it's probably been discussed loads already, but can you play your BB chip while making unlimited transfers?

I own Mane at 11.6. Would you advise me selling him this week as I am already holding Trent at 7. I have WC, FH and BB left and plan to use BB this week so I could use the funds from selling Mane

Do you want him for the rest of the season? If yes, keep. If no, sell.

I'm holding Mane, but losing Trent. Probably best to only keep one with BB, so just flip a coin.

Anyone thinking sterling over Aguero? With Jesus’s role against Madrid I can see Pep wanting him to have plenty of gametime before the champs league. Sterling seems more likely to manage two in a few days too
