Recapping the best Southampton players ahead of FPL restart

With just days to go before the Premier League season restarts, our series of team-by-team refresher articles continues with a look at Southampton.

Taking data from Gameweeks 24-29 as a jumping-off point for wider analysis, we will be discussing the players from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad who most catch the eye.

Fantasy managers may well be swerving the Saints to start off, with some tricky matches to come between Gameweeks 31+ and 35+.

Should the south coast club still have ‘something to play for’ come the fixture swing in Gameweek 36+, however, then they will likely re-enter the radar at that point.

With this article borrowing heavily from the data available in our Members Area, only subscribers of Fantasy Football Scout can read on.

How is this for a BB team this week:

    Leno McCarthy
    TAA Doherty Stevens McConnell Lascelles
KDB (c) Grealish Mane Fleck Sarr
    Auba (vc) DCL Jota

No WC remaining but going with 7 DGW players this week. Want to try and make it as future-proof as possible.

    Any obvious changes?

    Cheers!

Not keen on McCarthy away to Norwich, is your forth defender O'Connell after he's been to McDonalds ?

        Haha yes, O'Connell, my bad.

McCarthy I have value tied up in, and not many cheap GKs about with any decent fixtures from what I can see!

If future-proofing, what's your plan for Utd players given their fixtures from GW31 onwards?

I have my eye keenly on Fernandes. I plan to do Mane - > Son and KDB - > Fernandes within the next couple weeks. Please tell me if that is lunacy...

I currently am as I think a bench boost with the likes of Doherty and Alonso and a more powerful 15 could pay off.

A few variables to consider, such as the suggestion as the away games being less difficult and City have been porous

VFPL, in case anyone is still interested.

First off, props to Ragabolly for fulfilling our fantasy fix whilst FPL was in suspension. This was much appreciated.

    Survival Sunday.

So, it all boils down to this: Who goes down with The Villa tonight?

2 of these 4 are going to be relegated:

West Ham (bur) : 31 pts (-36 GD)
    Bournemouth (wat) : 33 pts (-31 GD)
    Newcastle (che) : 33 pts (-29 GD)
    Brighton (SHU) : 34 pts (-23 GD)

West Ham look doomed to me and I have a sneaky feeling Bournemouth will beat Watford and pull off the great escape tonight.

Brighton should get a point at home, so it looks like Newcastle will be joining Villa and West Ham in the virtual Championship next season.

Who do you guys think will get relegated this evening?

On form, feels like Bournemouth will make it. They've been banging them in.

All depends on which Sheffield United turn up!

The three who get relegated from the real FPL, surely the next time Ragabolly runs VFPL it will have the 20 teams that are in that, so who gets relegated today is immaterial. Sorry Norwich.

West Ham and Bournemouth, has Ragabolly mentioned anything about motivation to stay up being written into FPL ? I trying to decide whether to play Lescelles or switch to Burn for a hit.

Yes, it’s been written into the scripts.

Lascalles on my bench but playing BB tonight. Whenever I play him he does nothing, and has a tough matchup against free scoring Chelsea.

But City play Wednesday then not again until Monday, that’s a decent amount of time.

And they only have three centre backs, so quite possible one of them starts twice, don’t ask me which though.

I just think the position of centre back is probably the safest, outside of the keeper, and although it’s a DGW.
If we looked at the timescale as it were a SGW playing on a Sunday, and then the following Friday, I think we’d be less panicked about the rotation.

Well I’m talking about the three who would be considered natural centre backs, but yes Fernandinho has played there as cover.

But yes, it’s Pep, so could play Foden and B.Silva for banter.

Pep is a historic selection troll, to the point I’m convinced he is aware of FPL rules and enjoys signing on to FFS at the end of a City game to read through our rage comments.

agree but I'm actually less concerned with rotation with the 5 sub rule. I'd like to think attackers will see a 60 minute run-out and then perhaps a 20-30 minute one in the next game as well. Still equals 90 minutes, but doesn't put all your eggs in one basket. We've seen players like Mahrez and (even Jesus) sub into a game and put up nice scores. I'm hoping for the best.

I wouldn't be confident of him starting both. However, it's possible that he does but then is subbed off to preserve him at say the 58th minute mark with City up 2 or 3 nil.

Just putting this here to remind myself, but inputs are welcomed

    Advantages of TC30 FH31:

    - Only chance to use TC in DGW
    - Get a chance to go all out on Leicester assets in GW31 (don't own any now), 3 Liverpool, Doherty, maybe Kane
    - Comes out with a better team from GW32
    - Different to most people (could prove good)

    Disadvantages:

    - Less DGW players, 2 sheff utd defenders instead of 3, no Arsenal. 2 City attacker and Laporte instead of 3 attackers
    - Aguero TC risk with minutes
    - Uses 1 extra chip than I would do if FHing in 30

Not sure on Luiz, think there could be a better sgw player - he’s just as likely to see red as do well!

Start Hendo. Bench Targett and Fleck.

      Hardly worth bench boosting

Maguire | Enda Stevens | Doherty (Lundstram, Simpson)
Fernandes | KDB | Sterling | Grealish (Fleck)
    Aguero | Pukki | Jimenez

Hard to say... maybe later in the season if you sell kun for someone like rashford and spread the funds to the bench?

No to Target, Yes to Jimenz instead of Ozil, otherwise seems solid

FH GW30+ so for this week only:

    A) 343 with Mount
    or
    B) 433 with Alonso
    ..?

Looks like a lot of terms will be fairly similar. I guess the big choice is whether to go with Auba, Aguero, KDB and Sterling or to drop one and spread the wealth bit.. What do you guys think?

Yeh I think it is worth it also, will lose a bit of value in the likes of TAA to do it though..

On free hit I would have all 4, without its probably a choice of 2 for me, KDB plus a striker

I’m going for all bar Sterling. Went for Pépé to get 12DGW players.

Outside of Fleck, Sarr and Grealish I think cheap mids are difficult to find whilst there's quite a few potential cheaper strikers.

Yeah. Sterling + Pukki/Tammy etc better than Auba + whatever mid at that price.

Yes, looking at something like that, no real budget options in midfield

I think Auba will score at least one. Feel like Sterling could go big though, would hate to miss out..

I see from your team above that you are maximising the DGW players, which is fair. I’m on the same boat but some SGW players do worry me a little.

Torn between free hit and BB with unlimited transfers. Its the impact from 31 onwards that concerns me the most. Which combo do you prefer for 31+ onwards and why?

    A. Leno, Egan, B, fernandes, Grealish, Norwood, Aubameyang
(this will be if i use unlimited transfers)

    B. McCarthy, Robertson, Barnes, Sarr, Hayden, Aguero
(this is what I return to if I free hit)
