FanTeam €200k winner Josh Wooldridge’s best team reveal for £1m Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

It’s only days until FanTeam’s season-long 2021/22 Premier League Fantasy game gets underway, with another guaranteed £1m up for grabs.

And who better to turn to for advice on the big-money FPL-style game than Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €200k first prize.

Josh is writing for Fantasy Football Scout in the upcoming campaign and, having provided us with some top tips in his first article, he reveals his latest team draft here.

Hi all!

With the Premier League season beginning this coming Friday, it was an easy decision with regards to what to write my FanTeam article on this week.

I am going to do an in-depth analysis on my favourite draft, explaining why I picked each player, and I will even throw in some alternatives on one or two spots that I need a bit more information on.

I hope you enjoy!

Goalkeepers

Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m)

This was a tough call for me. I started the summer wanting to pick Dean Henderson (£5.0m), but it looks like he is now going to miss the start of the season. Bachmann has the ability to make lots of saves, in a Watford team that set defensive records in the Championship last season. At such a budget price, I think he has two avenues to points- and will make enough saves, and hopefully keep enough clean sheets, to justify this inclusion.

Ben Foster (£4.0m)

Foster is the natural understudy to Bachmann. I love pairing goalkeepers together from the same team, as long as they cost a combined £8.5m or less. I am confident Foster is second choice at Watford, and trust that he could step in if needed – both for the Hornets and my Fantasy team.

Defenders

.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m)

Alexander-Arnold is such a powerful option on any Fantasy game, providing he is fit and the Liverpool defence looks solid. Whilst last season didn’t show much evidence on the latter, hopefully the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) can help to rectify last year’s defensive woes. Alexander-Arnold missing out on the Euros could be a blessing for Liverpool, who now have their star defender fully rested.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m)

Everton’s poor pre-season form is a slight worry but I always like Digne in Fantasy games, as he has the threat at both ends of the pitch. I think the £5.5m price tag is more than reasonable, and under Rafael Benitez, you would hope that the Toffees defence becomes even more solid. With Gylfi Sigurdsson (and potentially James Rodriguez) potentially out of the picture, Digne may take a larger proportion of set pieces this year, which can only help his FanTeam output.

Joel Veltman (£4.5m)

With many casualties in the Brighton defence and a few additional doubts, Veltman is one of the last men standing for the Seagulls that I am confident is nailed. £4.5m is a fantastic price for an asset from a team with such strong expected defensive numbers as Albion, and whilst the injuries may set them back, my three £4.5m defender picks are chosen with a more long-term strategy in mind.

Luke Ayling (£4.5m)

Ayling was probably the most attacking player in the league last year not to register an attacking return. He was unlucky on several occasions last time out, and I am confident that he will get several this time around. He also rotates perfectly with Veltman, so it makes sense to pick alongside the Brighton man.

Nelson Semedo (£4.5m)

I was slightly worried when I saw that Semedo wasn’t in the Wolves squad over the weekend but it has since come out that he is merely isolating due to contact tracing and will be available for selection for the opening Premier League fixture. Wolves do not have a good first three matches but Gameweeks 4-7 are particularly strong fixtures. With this in mind, I am happy to pick who I deem to be one of Wolves’ most nailed defenders, with some attacking potential as a bonus.

Weak bench, Should I downgrade Benrahma to White and upgrade Toney to Antonio?

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA Shaw Tsimikas (Ayling) (Amartey)

I prefer Ayling over White, his underlying data suggests he was very unlucky not to have more attacking returns. In general, I prefer selecting fullbacks at this 4.5 bracket.
He also has Burnley gw3, which gives the option of resting Tsimikas against Chelsea (avoiding double Liverpool).

I think also the emergence of Tsimikas and re-shuffling of my side conveniently left me needing a 6.0 midfielder.

yeah I have a slot open too but it is my last attacking slot after Toney so think I'll go ESR over Benrahma as it saves 0.5 and I can bench him more comfortably after BB.

Yeah Madders is a safer option in terms of starts Nacho has Daka, Vardy, Barnes to contend with.

Guessing you dont fancy the Toney option upfront if you can free up some funds in defence?

            1. iL PiStOlErO
              • 4 Years

I see Toney is popular here but want to see Bre in action first (fingers crossed that he is not the new Pukki). In my original draft I had Grealish and Mount with Nacho up front. Now I am hopping that Madders can get some assits with all these strikers. In defence can only ger some decent funds if I lose TAA but I just cant. So many options this year, also maybe when Kaku comes to Che I make completly new team.

Sorry, just to add, you've currently got Obafemi, Bisso and eventually Tsimikas who won't really play so you're quite rigid with your starting 11 as it is.

It’s a bold team to start the season! ESR and Deeney seem risky, Harrison has tough fixtures and having all 3 means less value in starting 11. Also prefer Son over Vardy, or even Mahrez.

Feels surprising that you go so big at the back with 3 big hitters still. For me I’d downgrade AWB or James and get money into ESR or Deeney.

But it’s your team. I really like Vardy as an option - probably over priced but if he’s going to pay off early in seems a good time.

Toying with the idea of dropping Bruno for Jadon + stronger mid, currently on the very template a

    a)
    Sanchez (4)
    TAA Shaw Tsim (White, Amarty)
    Salah Bruno Son Raph Benrahama
    Ings Toney (4.5)

    b)
    Sanchez (4)
    TAA Shaw Tsim (White, Amarty)

I'm settled on the core of my team, I just need to decide on three final spots, each of which gives me different benefits. Any help would be much appreciated.

    The core:
    Sanchez (Foster)
    Trent Tsimikas Shaw X X
    Salah Bruno Barnes Benrahma X
    Ings Antonio Obafemi

    The options:
    A) Digne, Targett and Raphinha (very strong bench, rotation options going forward and flexibility to jump of DEF/MID bandwagons).
    B) Ayling, Targett and Raphinha + £1m ITB (average bench but ultimate flexibility to move onto GW2)
    C) Ayling, Amartey and Havertz (much weaker bench but allows me to attack Chelsea's first fixture before moving him on for a City asset against Norwich in GW2)

Probably would go with B you know. Leeds have United which is a tough fixture but Everton, Burnley and Newcastle in 3 of their next 4 is decent.

Same dilemma here. Sanchez or Bachmann...with Bachmann you can have Foster also but as you said lets maybe see how they will adopt first. On the other hand Brighton are also not defendng giants, especially now with White gone. But if we want to have cheaper gk and save money these two are our best bets when you look at fixtures....

  21. The Case for BB GW1

7 reasons why an early BB could work out well for the non-expert FPL manager:

    1. It gets it out of the way and allows you to focus your transfers on your first XI after your first WC and for the majority of the season even if it doesn't work out. If it does work out, it allows you a potentially fast start (which I believe is crucial, the seasons I've gotten off to a slow start I've had poor season ranks)

    2. It allows you to use your second WC earlier and probably more effectively in the second half of the season.

    3. Many would agree that it's a very overrated chip (even if you nail it, it's not that many points in the long scheme of things).

    4. The experts, from assessing the schedule and potential happenings (Covid aside), feel that the blanks and doubles should be very straightforward this season. Very likely just the one big DGW towards the end of the season (in 36 I think)...so is it worth holding your second WC until then?).

    5. I believe that the FH chip (if you can navigate any potential BGWs) could be a more effective play to attack the big DGW.

    6. FPL Towers have priced many assets very kindly allowing a strong starting XV to BB with (particularly we now have 2 x 4.0 gifts to further strengthen).

    7. Although some seasons I do take it seriously...I play for fun (it's a game after all) mostly and I don't find the standard (as recommended by most 'experts') BB strategy fun, actually it can be quite stressful and annoying when it doesn't work out all that well (which I reckon is quite often if you admit it to yourself).

It looks promising. I'm going even bigger on the bench, it's a proper squad of 15. Currently if I had to pick the bench (it's not obvious) then it would be: Bachmann, Tsimikas, Alonso, Benrahma.

Isn't the downside that you have to have two cheap playing keepers, and that Tsimikas and Amartey will be not in both sides squads in a couple of weeks, so will need transferring out?

I'm doing it this season for the first time. For all the reasons you've listed above. Most importantly, aside from the fact there's no way I want to hold my 2nd Wildcard until GW35 just for a Bench Boost, is that the player prices this season have really opened up a great opportunity. Looking at my current draft it's 15 upside players with no filler. Sacrificing a second premium attacker (since you can only captain one of them) opens it up even further.

It's not for everyone, but I play aggressively and all my good seasons came from fast starts. All my bad seasons came from trying to catch up against an obvious template.

You too! Mostly I think people just hate being different, it doesn't feel 'safe'. But how is it safe spending gameweek after gameweek planning for a BB, not focusing on what's right in front of you, or refusing to play the Wildcard until a predetermined gameweek, all so that your 2nd GK, two x budget defenders, and one budget attacker MIGHT get two fixtures? It's actually super rare for the full bench to even play twice on BB, either because you realise you still need certain single gameweek players moving forward, or some of the bench get rotated etc. At the end of the day we're talking about potentially around 10 points gained from those 2nd fixtures in theory, if you even get them, and you're waiting 36 gameweeks to find out if it was worth the sacrifices.

we're on the same page...I don't understand why our take on BB isn't understood or at least discussed more...we're almost totally ignored in the community as being crazy or if they're being nice maverick managers 😉

For sure. "Maverick" is an easy label to throw around. In this case I don't see how it applies at all. But there is a template way of thinking, not just a template team, and it's almost impossible to break that.

This is why I don't even bother with a RMT, not that I really care what others think anyway, but I already know the answer! See how we feel next Monday I suppose, but I won't regret it because I doubt the later punishment will be severe. I'm excited to play with freedom all season, no BB restricting my thought processes.

exactly...if I get a non runner and a couple of blanks it's not the end of the world...the whole season to play without having to worry about it as you say...better than building up to it towards then end failing and having no time to recover

Nice I like the idea of 0.5 itb actually as it allows leeway in the event of a sought after asset rising in price and leaving you 0.1 short (hate that lol and seems to happen a lot)

        1. Andy_Social

I was all set to BB if Woodman had come in for his one game in the season at 4.0m. Disappointed he isn't. I think the biggest plus side of BB GW1 now is that you'll never get another gameweek with 2x4m defenders, both of whom have very winnable fixtures.
It's also the case that we may only have 2 DGWs this season, so there are other chips to use in those GWs.
Overall, I think it's an excellent idea. I probably won't because I'm very happy with my ultra-template squad, and I'd have to make adjustments to bring in a playing 2nd keeper and 3rd forward that would weaken my structure. But if you've got the right squad, go for it, I say!

I can understand that. If you're looking at your squad and you're really happy with it, there's no reason to change. What surprises me is that people aren't at least open to the discussion.

But what you say is why I do believe it's looking good this season: the defence doesn't have to be dodgy. We all know that come DGW36 everyone will have a bench with the likes of Veltman with two fixtures against Man United and Wolves (or some other combo). There's no guarantee it does better than a strategically prepared bench of single fixtures.

Played BB week 1 after the last World Cup.
Many of the big guns were doubts to start week 1 so had the money for 15 good assured starters. Worked a treat.
Seriously thinking about doing the same this year.
Slightly different this year as Salah, Mane, Fernandes all likely to be available as well. So less funds to spread over the rest.

When would you be wcing? I'd imagine it'd be best to wc early to get funds off of your bench and get the 4.0 defenders out of their since they'll lose their spots quickly. Would also allow you to attack the early fixtures. gw 6/7 are when the big fixture swings occur although I'm wondering if it'd be better to try and wc out of it earlier to get funds off your bench. Some fixture swings also occur at gws 4/5

I think it could work if you are bench boosting with:

      Sanchez - Amartey - Tsimikas - Brownhill

You probably have 4 starters there, but the excess over the minimum is only £0.5m (£0.5m on Sanchez over a £4.0m). You have CS potential with the GK and two defenders and probably at least 2 pts with Brownhill.

      1. Bad Kompany
        • 6 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Do you not think it's worth spending a little bit more to get someone with more threat than Brownhill? I was looking at Smith Rowe or maybe Tella if he looks likely to start for 1 or .5 more.

        1. diesel001
          • 7 Years

          You could do.

Part of it depends on how you intend to use your WC. If you know you will WC GW3, for example, then you don't care about the funds on the bench as you can use the WC to shift funds to the playing eleven in GW3. So BB GW1, FT GW2, WC GW3 and you are set for the first half of the season.

Or very, very worst case if for some odd reason the DGW scenario doesn’t work out (unlikely) - I’d rather have 4x games in a bespoke single GW somewhere towards the end of the season when squads are rammed & TVs are higher

It's not a bad idea at all, just a shame that almost every player starts from scratch form-wise. If there was a 4.0 GK and/or a Capoue-esque 4.5 midfielder I'd have loved to do it.

You know, fully support your way of thinking. With one caveat - I'm going for BB in GW2. Why:
      - GW1 is always a tad risky if it comes to nailing 15 starters. For GW2 one could fix potential problem of a non starter in the team
      - GW2 fixtures sit very well for 15 with mid/low priced assets having kind fixtures (BHA home vs Watford, AVL home vs Newcastle, BRE away vs Palace) coupled with LIV, MUN and even WHU having appealing fixtures
      - plan to kee this suboptimal spread of funds until GW3 and WC before GW4, where fixtures turn dramatically for some

      Risks behind such plan:
      - Can't take a punt on City player vs. NOR, as risking non-show in BB is a no go
      - 2 or more injuries in GW1 derails my plans (but in such case playing high quality bench still helps)

So, I've decided to play BB in GW2. Let's see how it goes.

I agree with this and changed to BB gw1 1 hour before deadline.

Looking at the 3 seasons played the only close to top 10k rank (10795) achieved I bb gw1 this was 2018/2019 season...

I beleive gw1 is the best chance you have getting all your players on to the field without taking hits and/or blocking your WC for this purpose alone.

So many times I have seen players bragging about their 15-20 bb bench points...rarely I see someone also mentioning: By the way I took 2 hits to get it and now I need to take another 2 hits to get money on to the field from the bench...

If I get over 10 extra points bb gw1 I will be happy with that...no hits as I intend WC after gw3...

      Good luck everyone!

I can’t pick in midfield at that price. While their are generally more high scoring miss by end of season it’s always hard to pick which ones from the off. So I’ve decided on 3 big mids (salah, Bruno, son) and mid price forwards and defenders.

But on your question. Barnes would be one. Or Haverts is an interesting one if you can stretch the extra.

Can’t decide on some cheap spots.

    A) Bachman, Veltman, Ayling (4.5 defenders rotating)
    B) Sanchez, Target, Amartey (Target starting first 3 and then reassessing when fixtures turn)

The Brighton and Leeds rotation seems to work well for a long time, but I said I wanted to try focus on early GWs this year which lead me to Villa defence.

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I wish I could answer. I'm on the same dilemma. Don't want to double up on Brighton but also believe Sanchez and Veltman are the two best options in their price bracket.

Yeh I agree, but won’t do double up. Essentially who’s going to score more out of Bachman or Target in the opening 3 games? I can’t decide!

          Target definitely

Cheers! Would you say he’s the best Villa defender? I’m a bit worried about old Ashley Young taking his spot?

Maguire or Coufal? Already have Shaw.

    Thanks!

Depends what kind of manager you are. Coufal if you like to spread your risks. Maguire if you don't mine going all in.

Then Coufal all the way. No need for double up. Also Coufal is actually a very fun player to own and can only be better this season

This looks like my final team (with 0.5 itb) but very grateful for any thoughts / suggestions.
(note: I see the Benrahma bandwagon but cannot justify 3x West Ham – I also cannot believe Mbeumo is only 1% owned)

    Sanchez
    TAA – Shaw – Cresswell
    Bruno – Salah – Barnes – Sarr – Mbeumo
    Antonio – Ings

(Subs: Guaita – Coady – Ayling – Obafemi)

Nailed starter - 5.5m - 1% TSB - OOP mid (often partners Toney up front) - 8 goals and 10 assists last year - has his share of set pieces
(highlights of the recent Brentford vs Valencia game clinched it for me)

Nice, still new to the league so a no from me.

Is Barnes worth it over Raphiña?

Let me ask you this is Barnes worth over Maddison? Look I am the only one owning Madders but like Barnes a lot. And to answer your original question it is 50/50 both very good players but Lei has better fixtures

Sorry but dont like that defence at all. The attacking 7 are great but too unbalanced

    3. Thinkering like a Boss

Probably the best 7 frontline within the budget albeit at a cost of defence

      Could do a 5.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0 in defense. Better balance. More options.

Guita is a no go for me. Palace were solid under Hodgson, but still didn’t get clean sheets. I owned Guita last season for a while and missed out. Not convinced Viera is going to get them going quickly so would stay away. Sanchez or Bachman.

Hi guys, can't focus on FPL right now, but this is my current draft :

    Sanchez Steele
    VVD Shaw Coufal Chambers Lowton
    Salah Bruno Jota Fraser Klich
    Ings Antonio Toney

    0.5 itb

Any big mistakes ? Cheers !

Chambers is the glaring one. Go White if you want the same bracket/team.

Wouldnt call them mistakes but Fraser&Klich seems like waste of spaces. Also TAA rather then VVD, I know it is boring but it is Trent. VVD just got back from long injury.

It sure about Fraser and Klich. Personally I much prefer the 5.5 defenders.

    Which defence to start with?

    Both have their own risks

    1. TAA + Amartey + Tsimikas + Shaw + 4.0 (Double starting 4.0 risk)
    2. Chilwell + Stones + Tsimikas + Shaw + Amartey (Rotation risk)

442 with Fodder bench (high risk strategy)
