The Community Round Up

For those who kept a keen eye on our community submissions and Hot Topics this week, the first Gameweek should be progressing well. The community served up with a wealth of excellent analysis about formations, players and team value from an array of writers and posters. We look back on the best of the last seven days, allowing those who missed out a belated opportunity to pick up some pearls of wisdom from fellow Fantasy managers.

The Community Submissions

In under a week, we’ve seen an impressive 17 articles contributed by community writers, offering some sound advice ahead of Saturday’s kick-off.

Template teams were the focus of Aussie Pundit’s look at the most popular players among Fantasy Football Scout’s veteran managers, while Nisag17 took a look at the template team emerging based on overall ownership.

The game’s heavy-hitting midfielders, such as Eden Hazard and Aaron Ramsey, remained popular targets for veterans and casual Fantasy managers alike. Bowstring the Trout provided this excellent round up of the elite midfield options and Eoin K followed up to cast his eye over these premium options in part 1 and part 2 of his analysis of the Fantasy Premier League’s cast of 9.0 men.

Further up the pitch, Daniel Sturridge was the subject of Jose’s Magic Omelette’s detailed look at how the Liverpool striker will fare without Luis Suarez by his side.

The community were also on hand to help those looking to plunged down the price brackets. The Puntmaster offered up this motley crew of budget punts, Nice to Finally Michu served up this look at FPL’s best 4.5m midfielders and Bowstring the Trout returned to chart his pick of FPL’s differentials with low ownership. On the other side of the fence, Home Run Baker warned against putting too much faith in poorly owned players as he looked to debunk the differential myth.

There are pricing pitfalls to watch for when investing in highly owned players. Anytimescorer’s look at the key groups of players that are likely to suffer early season price falls offered some early food for thought. With this in mind, AZ urged Fantasy Managers to keep their budget allocation flexible in order to react swiftly to a volatile market.

Player prices remained a focus as Rodellegabomb looked at the true value of players, as well as offering an explanation of “Value Over Replacement Player” theory. Another economist in our midst, Nisag17, has developed a theory of player value using incremental gain analysis, which in layman’s terms means getting more bang for your buck.

Premier League players making the transition from La Liga came under analysis in Khaled’s article. Meanwhile, Balotelli’s Bib ran the rule over the the best top flight teenagers and other young starlets.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Two major schools of thought emerged on the comment boards during the final week of preparation. While some were stressing the importance of identifying the very best budget options, others were promoting the explosive points potential of the premium players.

Sting was amongst those advocating penny pinching at the back in his excellent look at the the cheapest options, while Athletico Timbo was also on hand to offer his thoughts on the best 4.0 options. Madridista was another urging caution with the cheque book. His analysis of the midfield’s heavy-hitters concludes that Yaya Toure and Alexis Sanchez are simply not worthy of their inflated price tags.

In stark contrast, Absinthe put forward a powerful argument for investing in top-end defenders in order to avoid a repeat of last season’s desperate scramble for the defensive bandwagons as a result of the bonus point re-invention.

Elninorules was another Fantasy manager promoting big investment. He focused on a single midfield target, advocating seeing past Eden Hazard’s 10.0 price tag in order to swoop for a player who could be set for a “breakout” season as a true heavy-hitter.

Elsewhere, The Holy Trinity Freak spent much of the week constructing a team that included not only Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge, but also Chelsea’s Diego Costa. Hellbent on splashing the cash up front, he urged other Fantasy Managers to follow suit.

While many of us will lay down the Wildcard to repair a broken team, few of us contemplate revamping our team names. Your Mum’s Athletic provided some inspiration in this area, presenting the best team names around, with “50 Shades of O’Shea” and “Xavi Got News For You” among his picks.

The Community Tournaments

AZ has set up a new tournament for FPL managers – an early bird cup with 32 teams taking part. The latest standings can be found here.

Can anyone explain to me why Caulker got absoutely ripped to shreds by Ferdinand on BAPS? I thought i was paying an extra 0.5 for a better defender and attacking threat?

He had one great, possibly outlier, season and scored a goal in the next season.

He's not better than Hazard, Silva,Toure, Walcott or Mata.

Remains to be seen if he's better than Fabregas, Sterling and a few more.

Needs a few seasons of greatness like Ronaldo, Gerrard, Fabregas had to be called the best midfielder in the league.

What's your criteria other than 1 good season. You could say Yaya was the best CM in the league based on last year. It wouldn't be true but may would ignore that he got many goals from frees to make the claim. Taking out wingers, which most of my arguement was for, I'd agree he's the best attacking midfielder there at the moment. CM always says defensive minded to me. Ramsey is a great footballer, can defend, get forward, pick a pass. Needs to do it consistently though. Not doubting that he can, just need to see it.

That's my point. He actually plays CM unlike Yaya who dithers around and leaves City exposed defensively. And the fact that he consistently changes matches with goals and assists from open play is of note as well. It's remarkable.

2 years ago I laughed at Walcott's potential. The big Southampton transfer, went to Arsenal too young. He's proved me wrong big style. Though MRU has said, I was comparing wingers with central mids. Has the potential to be as good as Fabregas.

In 3 or 4 seasons he'll be way ahead of Toure, Walcott and Mata. Silva is a genius on the ball and can pick out the most ridiculous passes, and Hazard is the complete package for an attacking midfielder (skills, pace, one on one ability and shooting), but I can still see Ramsey being just as good, if not possibly better than both.

Also he does it from deep while being very good defensively both positionally and in the tackle. Rare combination which makes him more special than Hazard.

Funny how philosophical I am about having 9pt-Clyne on my bench.
I will stick to the rotation, and I know I will miss out on some decent hauls.

That said: who to play as a 3rd defender next week?
NTaylor (BUR) - subbed early against ManU - place under threat?
Pieters (hul) - Hull has a Europa game on Thursday.

It's not a matter of having a perfect team, just assigning funds correctly. Even if you don't have the right defender you should be able to make a sideways trade to get them in. Overloading in any third usually stuffs any chance of this.

Stats about football are one thing. Knowing exactly when one player is going to rise or fall in value is not. Im not saying its morally wrong or anything just that its not part of the game. And those stats are specific to the game . Its like having a cheat manual for a playstation game.

Like I said already. Its different. These are stats specific to the game that Fpl didnt release. Fair enough you found a way round it but like I said. You didnt really work it out. Someone else did. So its like having a cheat manual telling you what to do.

I would dispute the notion that it is cheating. FPL publish enough information such that the mechanisms behind price changes can be deduced. It's like me broadcasting my gmail password and then acting surprised when people read my email.

Cheating may be a bit harsh. I did say kinda cheating. But anyways people can defend it all they want. After all like you said, the info is readily available. Im just saying that for the casual player its a part of the game not knowing and you physically had to extract that data from other sources not through the permission of Fpl.

We've had this debate before. FPL don't want people to know excatly when players value will rise and fall. Those numbers are there so casuals would know who the popular players were for a given week/ season upto that point. It also allows for a fun guess game etc. All part of the fun.

How is it that people in the sky game have 120+ points for this GW? When I add up the scores of their players + C it only adds upto around 70 on average.

He had some chances and was relatively energetic. Since it's a big game against Liverpool, I fear he'll be dropped, but it could really go either way depending on how cautious Pellegrini wants to be with the Kun.

Can everyone just take a breath, calm down, it's been 9 games, the game week still isn't over.. Your side isn't that bad 🙂 hits are a probably OK early but outside of Siggy is there really a bandwagon worth jumping on?

I've got a crazy idea on low percentage ownership players and their higher % of ownership on here. If, you've got Arnautovic, think this, IF you do want to see what he can do with a really good set of fixtures up coming
    (GW2 Hull (A), GW4 Leicester (H), GW5 QPR (A), GW6 Newcastle (H) , GW7 Sunderland (A), GW8 Swansea (H), GW9 Southampton (A), GW10 West Ham (H) GW12 Burnley (H))

won't the other more "savvy" in comparison to casual members of this site (and or forum) , think the same? now hear me out, Arnie has 2.5% ownership yet i saw him in a boat load of RMTs in the preseason. So if, we, the FFS community decide to keep, his price should be safe from the ravaging of casuals.

Now, here comes my debate for keeping him, He's selfish, arrogant and goal hungry, He played well, STOKE are an issue, Mark Hughes failed us, not Arnie (and also not Bojan though with his high ownership i doubt the FFS community could save his price) Arnie bombed over the middle and let go some decent long shots, he demands the ball, even with the intent of playing a cross, His attitude is such that if he's not involved he's not happy, so whilst he is on the outside he's still wanting to play the final ball in. His delivery was deceptively good, the problem was Diouf was almost always the only stoke player in the box.

Arnie is still an excellent pick and a FFS community pick and Scout pick. Give him time, show faith in your judgement and stick by your man. I feel like this is like the scene in gladiator where if you run off you get killed but, if you stay together you'll be survive.

So i urge you, use your Free transfer elsewhere.

Arnie is love, Arnie is life.

I wouldn't be dropping Stoke attacking players,
Diouf was afforded no support other than Bojan's odd good flicks and couple of tastey plays from arnie although to be fair he usually followed any nice play with a shot attempt 😀

Bojan has great touch, ( I don't want him in fantasy)

you're a member have a look at Arnie, i reckon from watching him he let fire a couple of nice shots and did a few key dribbles and his cross completion percentage was hindered by there only ever being 1 player in the box...

Agree re the need for calm.

Even the Siggy bandwagon is a little out of control. One goal at Old Trafford and suddenly he is the new Michu. I'll still probably get him mind you 🙂

Liverpool at home to Soton was a plum fixture. Sterling is a decent choice for the season but tough couple of games coming up, not worth bringing in for a player like Mata or even Erik / Lamela imo

Chester hasn't suddenly become this year's John Terry just because he scored a goal, he will be lucky to get 3 more over the season.

      Have I missed any?

I agree on the need for people to calm down. One game is not enough to crown the player of the year.

The problem is the importance of building team value. Most successful teams are up to 110m by xmas. The only way to do that is to jump on bandwagons.
