The Community Round Up

The hectic final day of the transfer window provided the inspiration for a raft of discussions on the new additions to the Premier League last week. We also take a look back at the best members tables of the previous few days and catch up on the risers and fallers in our community leagues taking place.

The Community Articles

While many Fantasy managers were preoccupied with the Premier League’s new players such as Manchester United recruit Radamel Falcao, Tiggsy reminded us that the more established players still have something to offer. His passionate defence of Steven Gerrard sparked a fascinating debate as to whether the Liverpool captain still has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

Another established name in the community is the FFS UEFA group. Elninorules dropped by to tell us about their latest intriguing group contest for Fantasy managers, this time based around hockey.

The Hottest Topics

With a grand total of £835m spent, this summer’s transfer window was one of the most exciting for years and offers us plenty of new options heading into Gameweek 4. Danny Welbeck’s 11th hour move to Arsenal emerged as the key transfer from a Fantasy point of view, according to this deadline day discussion. McNulty was also on hand with further expert analysis on Welbeck’s prospects, which if he can grab a central striker role, look highly promising.

Another fascinating transfer was Falcao’s loan move to Manchester United. With manager Luis Van Gaal unlikely to find room for all his attacking stars there was plenty of debate over the potential starting XI. However, our discussion will prove grim reading for Juan Mata owners.

While Falcao’s goal scoring prowess is not in question, Balotelly pondered whether the Colombian striker could hit the ground running or would need time to adjust to the Premier League. Turns out from his research that Falcao has a very strong track record of settling in quickly into new sides.

For Lanley Staural, one of the biggest talking points from the transfer window was whether it had hammered the last nail into the coffin of the so-called template team. With even more options in teams such as Manchester United and Liverpool, he is convinced we may have seen the last of the template squad this season.

The Sports Guy’s guide to constructing a wildcard team acknowledges the increase in choice this season, but still maintains a rough template exists. He asked, who realistically would have a wildcard team without Gylfi Sigurdsson or a Chelsea defender?

At 6.5m and climbing, Sigurdsson is no longer an option for Sporting in his search for a 6m midfielder. His discussion on the best mid priced midfield assets did, however, offer up some slightly cheaper alternatives. Among those touted were Gameweek 3’s surprise stars, Swansea’s Nathan Dyer and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, who both bagged a brace. In our discussion on why so few managers have Dyer in their squads, a key factor to emerge was an unwillingness to pair him with Sigurdsson, who is seen as the best Swansea midfield option. But, argued Applebonkers, is Sigurdsson a player that can be relied on every gameweek?

Our resident Southampton expert Lucy also joined this budget-friendly midfielder chat to warn managers against drafting in Morgan Schneiderlin, due to his more withdrawn role in most matches.

Elsewhere, Gargamel visited to tell us about some of the updates to his Gargatron tool, which offers Fantasy managers a greater insight into their performance. JWF is among fans of the Gargatron and also told us about another another useful tool, the FPL Stats Calculator.

Price changes also continued to vex the community, after the realisation that it will be far harder to anticipate rises and falls this season. Quibit‘s glass was half full though as he put a positive spin on this development.

Finally, with the international break offering some time for reflection, Courtois in the Rye, asked the community to recall some of their worst ever Fantasy Football moments. We also looked ahead to the new season and asked what new strategies and tactics we will adopt. Jinswick revealed he is going to be more aggressive with transfers and will look to make at least one hit a week. Meanwhile, Van Gaalelujah is among those looking to save their wildcard for the second half of the season and target double Gameweeks.

The Members Tables

Danny Welbeck’s move to Arsenal got me wondering as to how well he compares to other Fantasy favourites. My shot accuracy members’ table shows the former Manchester United fares very strongly against last season’s top strikers and could prove exceptional value at a price of 6.9.

Shots in the box remains a key guide to goal scoring prospects, according to The Fantasy Freak’s ‘most threatening forwards’ table, which is a must read for those considering freshening up their forward lines.

Wakey has been looking at last season to see which defenders had the most touches in the penalty area. He has kindly left the time filter open to allow members to see how the current crop of attacking defenders are faring. Another to look at attacking defenders this week has been Why Always Mesut, with touches in the final third his guide to goal scoring prospects from the back.

Oz Lotto, meanwhile, was focusing on midfield attacking potential. As was Koflok, who looked at chances created for his midfield point machine table.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how these work. Also be aware that when making a table tags (such as ‘shot accuracy’ or ‘assists’) are now available to help others find them more easily.

The Community Leagues

In Zep’s Dead Team Challenge, where managers pick a Gameweek 1 squad that has to stay unchanged throughout the season, Kerrazy and Michudagawd are joint top with 198 points and an overall rank of around 2,000. The highest scorer in Gameweek 3 was Canadian Football, with an impressive 82 points.

Doosra has emerged as an early favourite to claim AZ’s Early Bird Cup. He won all three of his group games to book himself into the last 16. AZ also won all his group games and is another one to watch in this competition.

In @OFCProdicgy’s Scout Picks Challenge, which is loosely based on our own Scout Picks Timtastic was triumphant in Gameweek 3 with a score of 60 points.

Greek Fan has rocketed to the top of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league, closely followed by Mark in second place.

The safety score in TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing was 37 in Gameweek 3. This meant 92 teams were eliminated and 1,410 progress.

    Daily price change rant

No, cant be bothered , Itsbeyond belief. Massive amounts of drops for first two weeks , then suddenly hardly anyone drops or rises.
    What next week?

Very unfair on those that played theor wildcards this week as there was no warning of the radical change.

Lack of volatile price movements mean you can jump around with transfers a bit more, i.e. last season we all had so much value tied up in the likes of Suarez and Ramsey that getting rid would be very expensive if you ever wanted to get them back.

Now, for e.g. it's less of an issue to ditch a player for a few tough fixtures than before.

Newcastle fan - I don't think Haidara had much to do with the defensive errors tbh. If he were to get dropped, and Dummett reinstated, which is possible, it would just have likely occurred after a 1-0 win imo.

Not sure. I'd say the fans are about 60% in favour of Haidara and 40% in favour of Dummet. I think El muppet (Pardew) might keep rotating them to keep them on their toes/ shift the attention on them. No one really knows to be honest. I'm not expecting many CS from the Toon either regardless of opposition until Mr Muppet leaves

Roy Hodgson handed Jordan Henderson injury scare ahead of Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland.

The England midfielder limped out of training with an ankle injury to leave Roy Hodgson short of options in Monday night's match with Switzerland.

Jordan Henderson was forced out of England’s final training session in Basle on Sunday night after the midfielder hurt his right ankle. Henderson went down clutching his ankle and, after being looked at by England medics, limped out of training and back to the dressing rooms.

James Milner played the remainder of the training session next to Jack Wilshere in the centre of midfield.

But if you are such a good FPL manager as you claim, then you should be 50-100 pts ahead by then with only half a season to go.

It should be easy enough to win to win your ML from that position.

Understand your point Kinnear. Someone put it this way, the .1 falls and .2 rises are virtually worth .5 now.
All teams will look v similar in Jan which is a shame but hey, guess we just carry on. Avoid drops at all costs, we wont be making many .2 profits.

Yeah, I made that point (others might have too). You used to be able to make up a 0.1 drop by a 0.2 rise elsewhere. Now, the danger is your team just has to downgrade.

And the players you want won't be out of the reach of casuals either. That's my point.
The old system allowed people with high TV to have a monster team whilst those with low TV had to make do with their inferior budget. Now it will be a more level playing field

Ok I see where you're coming from but as we've already discussed it to death, there are upsides to it as well, mostly notably it gives you the license to be different ie less templated teams. Lets see how it develops over time and not whine over personal short term loses and jump to conclusions.

I think it's an annoyance we don't know what's going on, but find it refreshing we just need to concentrate on the players who'll score the most points, not worry about making/losing money.

I think everyone will be worried, losing value on players will not be made up. The only way to make any money is to get on bandwagons early, which isn't good for points.

Say if Falcao scores and 100,000 get him in and he doesnt score for 3 gws after, but during those gws balotelli scores. It will cause all havoc. people will lose money, it's better to have a team that you like most of the season

Ok that didn't make much sense, but I'm posting it anyway

      not only
i agree with those saying that the price value was a key component of this game and worried that already template teams have been formed and as price changes are minimal , this template will continue until the vast majority of the season making those who are more into this game lose interest

  14. buffrey

I know it's been done to death and for that I apologise but the price change discussions have made me think a couple things.

Firstly it appears the majority complaining (51%+) are those that have wildcarded GW3 and want to build team value. They also claim it removes the 'skill' from the game.

Well, frankly, skill isn't plagiarising Simone else's work to achieve a better result, that's intelligence as opposed to skill. Looking on someone else's website to find out who will rise is not skill. Skill would be cracking the code yourself, so those people should start up on that.

Secondly, we're already a couple weeks into the season and the price changes are as they are. If you have any sort of intelligence you would realise your 'tools' aren't working and the landscape is different before activating the Wildcard anyway, rather than so it just because it's what you planned to do and then moan about it. Skill is adapting to change and being early to realise the way to use the change to your advantage. It's like me suddenly deciding to drive to Newcastle (I live in Bristol) but my car has broke down, I can still do it on public transport but I'll be moaning about it I'm sure.

So there we go, I for one, as not on WC hope they don't "crack the code" and have appreciated the change FPL have made.

Agreed, what they are squealing about is that the people who spend a lot of time on this game should have some advantage over the casuals.

      Id say thats fair.

Well said Buffrey. I would use Total FPL and Fiso to catch the rises/ avoid falls but would never imply this was skillful, its using, as you say, intelligence.

The fact that those 2 sites went all drunk in the 2nd(?) week plus the randomness of of the changes should have been enough to inform people that something had changed.

I don't mind my players not rising, it's just that there doesn't seem to be a way of roughly predicting price changes, be that looking at some web site or manually looking at NTI/NTO. It's taken a lot from the game, randomising something that was previously so important.

Anyone think Pellegrini may set up like this against Arsenal if Jovetic is out? Jovetic did quite a bit of defensive work as well while playing in the hole. More I think about it, the more sense this makes to me.

Falcao making his debut at QPR.

    --
    http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2014/Sep/radamel-falcao-hopes-to-gain-clearance-for-debut.aspx

Manchester United's new no.9 Radamel Falcao is excited about the prospect of making his debut against Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The loan signing from Monaco can't wait to join up with Louis van Gaal's men and is keen for all the necessary paperwork to be processed in time to face Harry Redknapp's newly-promoted Londoners, possibly going head-to-head with former Reds favourite Rio Ferdinand.

After featuring for Colombia in a 1-0 loss to Brazil, Falcao spoke to reporters in Miami and underlined his enthusiasm for competing in the Barclays Premier League.

"I am very happy," he is quoted as saying by The Observer. "I hope to give my team the best and help to bring a lot of goals and victories.

"I now leave in a very good condition to join my club and I hope to be available next week. I go to Manchester with lots of hopes to try to win a place in the team and then come back to play for Colombia. It's better to not overthink and let things happen normally instead."
