The Community Round Up

Our community writers have been on fine form over the past week, presenting us with one of the busiest periods for articles on record.

Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point changes, squad rotation and goalkeeper selection were among the array of issues assessed. It was also a bumper week for Hot Topics, as we look back on discussions on Fantasy football’s unofficial achievements, the best premium players on offer and also welcome the youngest new recruit to the Fantasy Football Scout family.

The Community Articles

The changes to Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System (BPS) was the subject of The 3rd Turd’s impressive research this week. Incredibly he has managed to configure next season’s changes to last season’s games to find out just who will be the winners and losers when it comes to bonus allocation.

Another stellar piece of analysis was unveiled by The Shoemaker, newly established as one of the community’s top new contributors. This time he examined the subject of squad rotation, assessing those teams with the most and least settled sides.

Rotation of a different nature was the focus of O’Shaughnessy latest article, in which he considered the best strategy for captains at the start of the season. This was an issue also picked up by Match of the Dan later in the week.  Le Saux Solid Crew’s look at Fantasy Football’s best all round attacking players in recent years proved further, essential reading in the search for the best armband selection.

As Fantasy managers prepare for Gameweek 1, price is always a primary consideration. This week saw a flurry of community articles offering sound advice for those in search of value players.

Kompany man’s focus was the best bang for your buck goalkeepers, while p00sbrown took an in depth look at the budget assets available in Watford’s squad. Chicken Mandy also has an eye on value in his pick of the best Tottenham prospects.

Triggerlips has also been looking at price and the time-honoured tactic of selecting a cheap fifth midfielder to afford the premium captain candidates elsewhere. But, he wonders, is 2015/16 the season to ditch the strategy and splash the cash on all five midfielders? The search for value continued in TM245‘s look at Value Over Replacement Player theory, which considered the best value midfielders as well forwards.

When the FPL player price list was announced there were more than a few surprises, with the majority of the community overestimating many price tags, according to the results from Dat Guy’s Price Prediction Challenge. Congratulations though to the crystal ball gazing skills of Henrzd, who had the best predictions.

The Sky Sports game also launched this week and our resident expert Disable was on hand to offer advice in our dedicated Rate My Team (RMT) article.

Finally, we wanted to hark back beyond the last week to The Sarjeant’s superb analysis of Southampton’s conveyor belt of young talent – a terrific insight into a club that’s been feeding our Fantasy Football squads in recent years and may well do for seasons to come.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Later this month we have big plans regarding the steady stream of “Rate My Team” or “RMT” posts coming in. In the meantime, the community offered their advice on RMT etiquette to ensure that they attract replies.

A number of Hot Topics over the week took a look at some of the key names already featuring in many early Fantasy football draft teams. Branislav Ivanovic has emerged as the most popular premium priced defender, according to our poll. While for Wakey Manchester City’s David Silva is a name that should be top of the list of midfield candidates and Parm took a look at Alexis Sanchez’ Fantasy returns with and without some of Arsenal’s key men on the pitch.

More than half of FPL teams already own Eden Hazard but Rattan64 ponders whether Fantasy managers could be better off with 2.5 million in their pockets by drafting in his cheaper Chelsea team mate Cesc Fabregas instead?

A team with no shortage of choice in midfield is Man United, who this week added Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastien Schweinsteiger to a midfield that already boats Juan Mata and Memphis Depay. Doosra, however, is unimpressed and sparked a lively discussion this week after declaring the Red Devil’s revamped midfield a mess. In contrast, Wild Rover thinks the summer spending spree shows a side mounting a genuine title challenge.

Reacting quickly to the form of players such as United’s new recruits early on in the season is amongst the key advice on offer in Birdman77’s discussion on increasing team value in FPL. Reacting to transfer developments is also important, with Younes Kaboul’s move from Tottenham to Sunderland prompting Fantasy Noob to launch a debate on the most nailed-on Black Cat defenders.

Amongst the toughest players to predict a rise in form from are those from promoted teams. Yu Suk Young took this look back at some of the promoted players that proved a worthy investment. The Puntmaster also provides some useful information about those new to the Premier League with this update on his research into new recruits and promoted teams’ players. While Champs took a look at some of those promoted stars that failed to deliver.

Speaking of delivery, Granville popped by with the happy news that this week Mark welcomed a new addition to the family, with the birth of his daughter Edith. While Edith is the youngest birthday marked, this week also saw our resident Southampton expert Lucy celebrate her birthday, which she shares with former Saints star Gareth Bale.

Finally, one of this week’s most popular posts was Bsloebadger’s discussion on unofficial achievements in FPL, such as the Bench Buster, where your bench outscores your starting 11, and Captain Fantastic, where your armband selection delivers returns for 10 weeks in a row.

The Members Tables

With goalkeepers’ stock rising following a change to the bonus points Davejug1’s table went on the hunt for the most prolific penalty savers on offer.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

When you see Yaya strolling around like this and playing a "bigger" game than everybody else it's almost daft not to pick him.

Hello Gents, would appreciate your comments on the following:

    A) Azpilicueta & Chadli

    or

    B) Ivanovic & Richie

Ritchie - Unsure of him at the moment. I don't know much about him, he seemed to do very well in the Championship last season but how do people think he will adapt to the PL?

Chadli - This is a strange one. I haven't seen him in many teams on this site. Given how many minutes he played last season and his return (11 goals, 7 assists) he seems good value for money if he can nail down a spot in the starting XI most weeks. I also like Spurs fixtures over the first 6 weeks (barring GW1 against Man Utd, perhaps) and think he could go on a good run over this period. A nice filler until the next low-mid priced midfielder bargain becomes obvious.

Ivanovic - I told myself all season that Ivanovic would be the first name on my team sheet when the FPL season opened for 15/16. He has been extremely consistent over the last 5 season (19 goals, 14 assists), last season being his best ever. I am also acutely aware of the fact that he has gone on incredible runs at the beginning of the last two seasons. I realise he is almost definitely the best defender option but do people think he is worth the money? Does he justify his price tag? What about this snowballing perception that he always starts the season well, myth or reality?

Azpilicueta - Word on the street is that the new bonus point system could benifit him in a big way. We know what he has to offer - not much goal threat and perhaps 3-6 assists per year. It does look like Filipe Luis is heading back to Spain which should mean Cesar will be guaranteed more game time, however, there are rumours that Chelsea are looking to sign a defender or two this summer (Ghana defender Baba Rahman springs to mind). Personally I think he will end the season with a higher points total than the previous one but how will his points tally compare to his right-sided counterpart? 6.0 is a tempting price for such a talented Chelsea defender.

I find it a little surprising that no one is considering Courtois in goal at that price (and potentially a 4.0m counterpart).
      Saves decent money.

He'll probably outscore any 9m rotation, but he takes up a chelsea slot. people are going with either aspi or ivan -- who have more potential

    4. Pasqualinho
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

For each of the 3 seasons that Azpi has been with Chelsea, Ivanovic outscored him by 40+ points. This is a recurring trend but, of course, we've no way of knowing whether it will be the same in the 4th season. However, if you do think it's the same, then you need to ask yourself whether Chadli will be able to outscore Ritchie by a sufficient amount to cover this.

      1. PinchyWinchy
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

That's an interesting point but it does depend on whether or not Azpilicueta can start to get as much game time as Terry/Ivanovic since his last three seasons saw him play between 2200-2500 minutes out of a possible 3420 while Ivanovic has seen significantly more game time, playing every minute of last season. I suppose it's a guessing game at the moment with the history and stats suggesting that Ivan is the safest option. Thanks for the response 🙂

          • 14 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

Very true. So you can probably factor in that you'll have your 4th choice defender's score for the games that Azpi misses to factor in also. Last year that was 9 matches.

    Afternoon all.

Given I'm fairly set on a GW4 WC strategy, how does this team look for the first 3 weeks only?

    Panti, Hamer
    Kos, Azpi, Huth, O'Shea, Targett
    Hazard, Walcott, Mata, Mane, Wanyama
    Rooney, Lukaku, Murray

    GW2: Lukaku -> Sakho

Is a bit of a gamble but am considering no MCY, LIV or TOT for the first 3 weeks.

    GW1 would look like this:

    Azpilicueta / Cedric / Bellerin
    Hazard (c) / Chadli / Ritchie / Cazorla
    Aguero / Deeney / Kane
    (Myhill / Wanyama / Francis / Matthews)

Has anyone considered getting both Rooney and Aguero into their team? I've just had a go and it's possible to get 3 "premium" mids in as well, but almost everything else then has to be budget. Not convinced it's worth it.

    4.5 - 4.5
    Azpi - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5
    Hazard - Walcott - Sterling - 4.5 - 4.5
    Aguero - Rooney - 4.5

This is why I don't like it, it's the trade off of spreading risk vs. missing big hauls.

    Regarding Player Prices

Does anyone have any stats or feelings on how close the initial FPL prices for players relate to their final FPL scores?

What I mean is - does a 7.0 MID usually finish at that price/expected score?

Of course there are always players who have breakout seasons (Kane, Austin for example), but does the pricing in general reflect the outcome?

They're based more on the previous season's score - so a theory is the best players to buy are the ones who underachieved last year, and the worst ones are the ones who overachieved. The overachievers are normally the ones that you had in your team at the end of last season.

A few groups are predictable, but not all.

For example... 6.0M midfielders. They return average points for average money and are usually best avoided, in favour of punty 5.0/5.5M midfielders.

That advice is totally true for other fantasy games too.
I'm playing fantasy Aussie Rules right now, and that is definitely good advice.

If people actually did as predicted, we would all have the same score right?

Pricing often reflecting on ownership, as well as points scored.

Cheers for the replies. I was surprised by some of the pricing so far.
6.0 for Smalling? - a player who in 7 seasons has barely played 50% of games and scored 91 last year. I wouldn't have him in my team if he 4.5!

Also if you had told me this time last year that Ings and Falcao would have the same starting price, I'd have doubted your sanity lol

If you could have ANY midfielder in the whole game for just the first 2 GWs, who would it be? Budget no bar.

I've got Hazard. My plan post GW2 is MID + Rooney out for Depay + Aguero. So need that MID spot filled. Currently got Silva but seeing how he was Chelsea in GW2, I feel like a Walcott/Mane/Mirallas punt could potentially be better (over the first 2 GWs)

Confident of Walcott? I see Sanchez back in action by gw2 and I don't think Wenger will displace Giroud up top.

Player prices change during the season dependent on the popularity of the player in the transfer market. Player prices do not change until the season starts.

Wow! Great minds etc. Murray is the obvious risk, but those first 3 weeks look decent for attacking returns. How's your defence shaping up?

For defence I'm probably going with kosc, smalling, fonte and 2x4.5 (huth+1 more). Just want nailed on players with good fix til gw4

I only signed in yesterday though so it'll change.

Great RMT scores and lets me load up on the likes of City from gw 4 onwards.

Yep. Won't be any snow before 28 Dec and three GWs should be enough to identify starting line-ups, budget defenders etc.

Something slightly different, with many eggs in few baskets. RMT please, first 4 weeks only.

    --------------------- Courtois
    ---- Darmian  Mertesacker  Cedric
    Hazard  Cazorla  Mata  Henderson
    ------ Rooney  Giroud  Rodriguez

Giroud will be out for Walcott if Theo starts charity shield. Should see if JRod and Mata are nailed before the deadline. Any suggestions much appreciated, thanks.
