End of Season Awards – Midfielders

After rolling through the leading goalkeepers and defenders from a Fantasy Football perspective over the 2016/17 campaign, our end of season award nominations continue with the main men in midfield.

Once again, we’ve released a poll in the right column of the homepage to collect your votes – please remember that each person can cast four votes this time around.

2015/16 Fantasy Football Scout Team of the Season Review

Goalkeeper – Jack Butland

Defenders – Toby Alderweireld, Hector Bellerin, Christian Fuchs

Midfielders – Riyad Mahrez, Dele Alli, Dimitri Payet, Mesut Ozil

Forwards – Jamie Vardy,Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane

The contrast in the Fantasy landscape over the last two seasons is more than apparent here, with only Dele Alli making the shortlist among 2015/16’s leading lights.

The Spurs starlet made huge strides to improve on the 10 goals and 12 assists racked up in his debut season, with 18 goals and 11 assists as Mauricio Pochettino’s side capped an impressive campaign with a second-place finish.

Raised expectations, the move to the London Stadium and some poor recruitment last summer suggested it could be a difficult season for West Ham United, and that was reflected in the fortunes of Dimitri Payet.

The Frenchman only managed two goals and seven assists during the first half of the season, before forcing a move back to his former club Marseille in the January transfer window.

Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil both endured disappointing campaigns.

Mahrez – the top scoring player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last season with 240 points – only managed half that number this time around, and was rarely a factor in 2016/17.

Initially priced at 9.5 in FPL on the back of his heroics in Leicester’s shock title-winning campaign, the Algerian looks certain to drop in price next season, although a summer move away from the King Power Stadium could re-ignite his Fantasy prospects.

Ozil also started the season available at 9.5 and initially got off to a strong start, scoring three goals in his first six starts.

But a poor run of form during the winter months saw the German largely forgotten as a Fantasy asset, before he showed flashes of his best form towards the end of the campaign, producing a goal and three assists in his last four appearances.

The Gunners playmaker still ended the season with 167 points in FPL, so his price is unlikely to change drastically next term, with a drop to 9.0 perhaps a possibility.

So with Alli the only name retained, here are this season’s runners and riders for the midfield spots.

Alexis Sanchez

After a couple of relatively impressive seasons at the Emirates, the Arsenal attacker finally proved himself as Fantasy royalty and more than justified his lofty 11.0 starting price.

The top-scoring player in FPL, Sanchez ended the campaign on 264 points – a career-high for the Chilean and some 97 points ahead of his previous season.

Sanchez’s total of 24 goals was just five down from his tally for the last two years combined (16 and 13), while it’s a similar story for his 11 assists – just two fewer than the pair of seasons (eight and five) beforehand.

His versatility helped. Stationed as a lone striker or on the left of a 4-2-3-1, he then partnered with Mesut Ozil in central support roles in a 3-4-2-1 set-up over the final few Gameweeks.

A total of 11 double-digit hauls underlined his captaincy credentials, with the highlights including a 23-point return at West Ham in Gameweek 14 and 27 points over Double Gameweek 37.

A rise in price to 12.0 or even 13.0 could be on the cards in light of his improved output, though it’s uncertain whether he’ll still be at Arsenal by that point, amid mounting interest from Chelsea and Man City.

Top-scoring midfielder in the Telegraph game and number one striker in the Sky Sports offering, it remains to be seen whether Sanchez will be reclassified as a forward in FPL next time around.

Eden Hazard and Pedro

Both endured difficult campaigns in 2015/16, tallying just 104 and 113 points respectively, but the Chelsea wide men thrived under new manager Antonio Conte.

Hazard began the season strongly, producing double-digit scores in two of his first three matches, with Conte at that stage favouring a 4-1-4-1 formation.

But it was the Italian’s switch to a 3-4-3 in Gameweek 6 that helped Hazard reach another level.

The Belgian registered 49 points in just four appearances between Gameweeks 8 and 11, including a 19-point haul in the 5-0 thrashing over Everton.

Hazard didn’t really attain those lofty heights during the rest of the campaign, but a steady stream of attacking returns saw him end the season with 16 goals and nine assists and finish as the third highest scoring midfielder with 224 points.

In front of his own fans in particular, Hazard flourished. Whereas 15 of Sanchez’s strikes, and 150 points, were registered on the road, the Chelsea winner netted 12 of his 16 goals on home turf – at least three more than any midfield rival.

We can expect a rise from last year’s initial 10.0 valuation, with 11.5 or 12.0 perhaps on the cards. Yet as one of the few premium midfielders offering spot-kick duties, Hazard could more than merit such a hike – he’s now returned 190+ points in four of his five seasons in the top flight.

The change in system was also pivotal to Pedro’s success – he’d started just one of Chelsea’s first seven matches, returning a single assist.

But his first start in the new formation yielded an assist in the 3-0 win over Leicester City in Gameweek 8 before he produced 36 points in the Blues’ next three home encounters.

The Spaniard was, at this stage of the season, sharing playing time with Willian, but he would start 12 of Chelsea’s 13 matches between Gameweeks 20 and 33, registering three double-digit scores.

Pedro ended the campaign with nine goals and 10 assists, totalling 162 points in FPL. Despite his ability to plunder big scores in any single Gameweek, Pedro remained a differential throughout the campaign, with his ownership peaking at 486,673 in Gameweek 30.

Having kicked off last term at 7.5, Pedro could be similarly priced next season, with a hike to 8.5 the likely ceiling. But with rotation set to be more of a factor due to the Blues’ involvement in the Champions League, it may be that Hazard proves to be the only safe option from the Chelsea midfield.

Runner-up among midfielders in Sky Sports, Hazard claimed fourth in the Telegraph offering, while Pedro grabbed sixth spot in the latter game.

Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min

Alli and Eriksen featured on this very shortlist 12 months ago and both enjoyed stellar campaigns once again, registering 225 and 218 points respectively to finish second and fourth among FPL midfielders.

Although the pair were identical for ppm (6.1), how they came about it vastly differed – Alli offered the main goal threat (18 strikes to Eriksen’s eight) with Eriksen adding the creative edge (20 assists to Alli’s 11).

When it came to output, Alli was the most consistent – he produced points in 22 of his 35 starts, whereas Eriksen delivered in 17 of 36 outings. Yet the latter was more liable to serve up substantial returns, bettering Alli by 10 double-digit hauls to seven.

In terms of the underlying statistics, though, Eriksen reigned supreme – the Dane registered more goal attempts (133) and chances created (112) than any other FPL midfielder.

The pair were near-certain starters when fit, in either the 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-2-1 formations generally favoured by Pochettino, and battled it out for our attention throughout the season.

Both began the campaign priced at 8.5 in FPL, though we can surely expect a shift into the premium bracket next time out, with a cost of around 10.0 to 11.0 on the cards. But with Harry Kane likely to be earmarked by many as the prime route into the Spurs attack, the midfield pair could struggle to claim a place in our initial plans, at least.

The Spurs duo also claimed a place in the top four midfield spots in Sky Sports and the Telegraph, with Alli finishing first in the former game due to Sanchez’s classification as a forward.

Despite failing to secure a regular role under Pochettino, Son Heung-min still finished ninth in the FPL midfield standings with 174 points.

The South Korean’s total of 14 goals and nine assists from just 23 starts was hugely impressive, with his most consistent spell of the season coming between Gameweeks 30 and 33, when he produced 42 points in FPL and shone as a mid-price differential playing predominantly on the left flank.

Impressively, an average of 154.5 minutes per goal was second only to Sanchez’s 140.8 among FPL midfielders.

Son will surely come in cheaper than his high-scoring midfield team-mates, yet there’s no question that he remains far more prone to his manager’s rotation plans than Alli and Eriksen, particularly when Spurs opt for a 3-4-2-1.

Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane

Liverpool’s star midfield trio all enjoyed strong campaigns, although it was rarely clear which one provided the best option.

Although Firmino finished as the Reds’ top scorer on 180 points, this can mainly be put down to injuries – Coutinho and Mane started just 26 and 28 matches to the former’s 34 appearances on Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet.

Indeed, in terms of ppm, Mane (5.8) and Coutinho (5.5) both bettered Firmino’s 5.1.

All three started the 20161/7 campaign with different price tags in FPL – Coutinho came in as low as 8.0, with Firmino at 8.5 and Mane 9.0. This time around, there’d be no real surprise if there was no disparity, with a move to 9.5 or even 10.0 a possibility for all three.

Looking forward, much may depend on what system Klopp employs.

The Reds’ manager mainly chose a 4-3-3 last time out, with Coutinho, Firmino and Mane as the front three, though a switch to a midfield diamond in the final two Gameweeks helped Liverpool put seven past West Ham and Middlesbrough without reply.

Coutinho was utilised in a deeper role yet still amassed 29 points over that pair of matches, though the notion of Firmino and Mane as a front two – particularly if, as expected, they remain as midfielders – will increase the appeal of both players.

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Following his best ever FPL campaign in 2015/16, when he registered 158 points, much was expected from Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson on the back of a successful Euro 2016 with Iceland.

Priced at 7.5 in FPL, a tough opening fixture list persuaded many managers to largely ignore Sigurdsson from the outset.

But despite the Welsh club battling to avoid relegation for the majority of the season, he still ended as the sixth top midfielder, serving up a career-high 181 FPL points thanks to nine goals, 12 assists and 18 bonus points.

Sigurdsson’s role on set-pieces and as the first-choice penalty taker almost guarantees a steady stream of attacking points – indeed, despite providing just three double-figure hauls, he still supplied attacking returns in 19 of his 37 starts.

Joint-top with Sanchez for shots on target (49) from midfield, the Icelandic schemer scored or assisted 48.8% of the Swans’ 45 goals and his output over the past nine months may justify a price rise to 8.0 or even 8.5 in FPL.

It remains to be seen, however, whether he will still be at the Liberty by that point, as he continues to be linked with a move to Everton.

Kevin De Bruyne

An injury-hit first campaign limited Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne to just 131 points in FPL, but much was expected of the Belgian heading into 2016/17 following the appointment of head coach Pep Guardiola.

De Bruyne was handed a price tag of 10.5 in FPL but, despite topping the assist charts with 21, he struggled to gain significant investment due to a lack of goals, finishing the campaign with just six.

The City star spent a sizeable period of the season playing in a deeper midfield role, but his form over the final few weeks, when he averaged 8.3 ppm in his last seven appearances from a more advanced position, may be a sign of things to come in 2017/18.

De Bruyne ended the season ranked fifth among FPL midfielders with 199 points, although he was joint-first across the entire game for bonus points, with 33.

Heading into next season, De Bruyne is likely to come in around the same price and looks set to remain as City’s chief creator. Despite his lowly goal output, it’s worth noting that he struck the woodwork on eight occasions last year – more than any player in the top-flight.

But with Gabriel Jesus already a preferred pick for many and Sergio Aguero still in the mix, De Bruyne could face a tough task to claim a spot in our five-man midfield – particularly if Leroy Sane remains in the mid-price bracket, having delivered just 103 points in his debut campaign. Factor in new boy Bernardo Silva and there’s no shortage of competition for our attentions at the Etihad.

Michail Antonio

After enjoying a fine debut campaign in the Premier League in 2015/16, the West Ham midfielder produced another strong run of form until sustaining a season-ending hamstring injury against Swansea City in Gameweek 32.

Antonio ended with 132 points, registering nine goals and eight assists from just 29 starts – an average of 4.6 ppm that was on a par with Chelsea’s Pedro, for example.

He enjoyed a purple patch at the start of the season, tallying 38 points between Gameweek 2 and 5 and played in a variety of positions under West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, from right-back to a central striker, although the bulk of his production came when operating on the right wing.

The former Forest man seems set to remain around the 7.0 mark for 2017/18 and could again emerge as a popular midfield asset thanks to his aerial ability – only Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (13) has scored more headed goals than Antonio (12) over the past two seasons.

Josh King

A sensational second half of the season saw King rival the likes of Swansea City’s Michu from 2012/13 and Dele Alli from 2015/16 as a stand-out budget midfield option.

Although he ultimately returned 16 goals, three assists, 17 bonus points and a total of 178 points in FPL, King struggled for the first few months and netted just twice in his first 18 matches. However, a run of 14 goals from Gameweek 19 onwards was more than any other midfielder.

By the time King emerged as a viable Fantasy asset, his price had dropped from an initial 5.5 to 5.3, with just over 30,000 managers owning the Cherries attacker in Gameweek 22. And despite ending the campaign priced at 6.2, that late-season surge ensured that he ranked second for value in terms of points per million (28.7).

Versatile enough to play in a central support role or up front, King’s classification will be one to watch next time out, given that he is already listed as a forward in the Sky Sports game.

We can expect a rise to around 7.0 or 7.5, although our attentions could turn to Jermain Defoe if the veteran returns to the club over the summer.

Having scored in each of the final three Gameweeks, Junior Stanislas could also offer competition among the Cherries midfield contingent – his average of 5.1 ppm was superior to King’s 4.9.

Etienne Capoue

Starting off at a cost of 4.5, the Frenchman served up seven goals, two assists and 14 bonus points to end the season as the number one value midfielder in terms of points per million (29.1) and second overall to Burnley stopper Tom Heaton (29.2) in 2016/17.

After registering just a single assist during the previous season, Capoue had next to no history as a viable FPL asset. But our assessment soon changed after he was utilised in an advanced midfield role by Hornets head coach Walter Mazzarri.

Stuck on numerous benches through the opening Gameweeks, Capoue racked up four goals and an assist over the first five matches, becoming the cause of much frustration as many failed to find a spot in their starting XI for the red-hot Watford midfielder.

Capoue was the first major bandwagon of the campaign, finding himself owned by over 1,700,000 managers by Gameweek 8 to peak at a price of 5.3.

His total of 131 points in FPL – more than double any other Watford midfielder – should earn Capoue a slight price hike for 2017/18.

Joe Allen

Moving from Liverpool to Stoke City in the summer, little was expected from a player whose most prolific season was back in 2011/12, where he scored four times for Swansea.

But a surprising shift into the No 10 role meant Allen burst into life, registering four goals and two assists between Gameweeks 6 and 10.

That run of form saw the Welshman emerge as a favoured cheap fifth midfield option, but he was unable to hit those heights again, failing to add to the three double-figure hauls produced over that spell.

Ending the season as Stoke’s top scoring player in FPL with 118 points, Allen looks set to be the subject of a slight price rise from last term’s starting value of 5.0.

      For me:

Sanchez - been so consistent and my most captained player along with Aguero this year

Son - End of season heroics were amazing for my team, a 19 point haul!

Josh King - Doesn't get much better than being able to rely on a player you picked up for less than £6m

Special mention for Capoue - start of season heroics which we were kind of hoping for based on pre-season but equally annoyed at for benching 🙂

Sanchez - Very consistent and explosive.

Eriksen - I had the Dane for large parts of the season and captained him against Swansea when scoring 19 points.

King - Still happy Phillips got injured cause that's when I brought in the Bournemouth forward and I'll always remember that GW28 haul. He even missed a penalty!

Mané and Sané deserve a mention as well. Will definitely look at them in 2017/2018.

      1. King was always the most satisfying to own. Mighty point-scoring powers; teeny tiny price.

      2. Sanchez delivered the goods. Mostly.

      3. Siggurdson had a really good season - and delivers when he needed to.

      4. Alli - practically a second striker, and thrived when Kane was out as well as when he was back.

      5. Fraser was my favourite 5th mid. His connection with King from the wing was highly profitable.

Special mentions: Mane, Sane, Eriksen, Capoue.

Alexis - the go-to default captain option in the middle part of the season when Aguero went off the rails
Dele - consistent performer and loved differential captaining him against Swansea when everyone went with Sanchez vs West Ham in GW31

I'm struggling to think of a third who did well for me this season, I had all the right players but not necessarily in the right order. Hazard/Firmino massively underperformed, Siggy/Eriksen were solid but due to lack of goals their numbers aren't great in my side, Mane/Sane/Pedro all blanked, getting Sterling for DGW27 cost me points, Zaha was another poor DGW option, Walcott tempted me twice, Barkley/Lamela/Antonio were all early bandwagons that went wrong, held Redmond far too long at the start, Snodgrass and Philips struggled to get on the pitch when I needed them in and I jumped on King far too late.

Sanchez - obvious choice despite almost costing me the ML title in GW37
Sigurdsson - once again proven he's a fantasy god
Son - a perfect punt when Kane was out
King - despite not owning him for the most of his hauls, he's brought me a lot and the instagram post was historic
Capoue - despite me not managing him properly, he has been the perfect fodder

      1. Joshua King. Cheap, OOP, incredible involvement. An enabler who actually was one of my best scorers in 5-man midfield. Also didn't fail me when I captained him.
      2. Eriksen. A lot of people here complain about him, but worked brilliantly for me. Guaranteed flow of points.
      3. KDB. If you owned him at the right times, the point hauls were fantastic. I did.
      4. Sanchez. Consistent flow of points and probably my most profitable captain.
      5. Firmino. That frustrating piece of carp scored me a few good hauls too, when I did NOT captain him.

I hated every other midfielder. Also Firmino a bit.

Sanchez, King, Eriksen and Sane for me, in that order.

I've talked about this before, but Sanchez because he could always be relied on to be my captain - captained 13 times and blanked only once, he delivered 22.9 ppg as captain. And of course he helped me rise from the 7 to 10k region before GW36 to 2k by the end of the season.

King needs little explanation - I got him just before his hat-trick and he never left my team since, phenomenal value.

Eriksen because he's my favourite player in the league after Sanchez.

Sane because he emerged as a handy differential, even when people were buying him during the DGW.

Sane, Alli. Cheap, with a stable delivery of points (sensational output from both Alli and Eriksen, I only owned Alli). Otherwise I didn't really nail the midfield this year, I had Mane and Coutinho for a few good hauls but I also missed out on a lot. I got Sanchez in after his haul against Watford and kept him for most of the season, that was profitable at least. But I gambled on going without him for gw 35-38 and that cost me a lot.

So just Sane and Alli really. Coutinho at a push.

Sanchez - top-scoring midfielder and a reliable captain - wish I'd saved my TC chip for him or Harry in GW37!
King - great form and great value in the last 16 game-weeks.

Eriksen, Alli and Hazard - all excellent, but sometimes difficult to select the best one or two of the three - I often seemed to have Alli when Eriksen was outscoring him and vice versa.

But why don't we get the chance to vote for 5 midfielders in the End of Season Awards?
3-5-2 is far more popular than 4-4-2 and competes with 3-4-3 as the most popular formation, yet we get 4 votes for defenders but only 4 for midfielders.

…except Sané might rather be 9.0. I know he didn't score al that much in the end, but was pretty nailed on and got chances and is expectably going to be better next season. It's risky to leave him at 8.5, everybody will have him at that price.

I think these are very close. I'd put Aguero at 12.5 (just because, Aguero), and I think Alli will be valued 0.5 higher than Eriksen due to goal threat (so maybe, hopefully, Eriksen comes in at 9.5).

            I would assume so yeah.

I personally wasn't convinced he'd come straight in like he did. Have to be careful pricing him too low and then realising he's number one choice.

            I wouldn't be surprised by

            Aguero - 12m
Jesus - 11m (but more likely to be 10-10.5 as he hasn't had a full season)

There's a real danger that, if the prices aren't clever, we'll see Kane just get 60% ownership from the off.

I getting Jesus or Aguero means I can't get Sanchez and Kane, then I won't even look at City's attack and will go with Sane.

Depending on fixtures, I think we could see a Kane/mid-price/mid-price template form early on.

Will also be interesting to see if Alli and Eriksen are "differentials" early on due to Kane's popularity. I wouldn't be surprised.

Was thinking the same about Kane/mid-price/mid-price. Hoping that Nacho goes to a mid-table club which could give us the option of a frontline like: Kane - Iheanacho - Defoe. Not a bad frontline that, fixtures prevailing.

Should there be a different method of selecting a player as midfielder or forward for FPL?

There's now quite a bit of crossover with players playing as "forwards" rather than midfielders - the likes of Hazard, Sanchez etc. Firmino is a false 9 but classed as a midfielder (could change next year).

Alli plays as a no.10 but is often as far forward as Kane over the course of a game.

I was discussing on Twitter whether FPL should consider using a model similar to Dugout FC where certain players can be classed as midfielders or forwards in your team and the points change depending on the position.

So lets say this year where there weren't any decent mid priced forwards for the majority of the season you could bring in Firmino at 8.5 and he'd get you 4 points a goal rather than 5 but wouldn't take up a midfield slot.

Whether they would allow you to do that with all midfielders I don't know but for the no.10s, then inside wingers etc you could. I played Sterling up front in Dugout for a little while which helped me get Yaya and Sane in midfield.

    What do people think?

For a lot of people around here it may be uncomplicated, but not for others. I have a friend who played all season long using auto sub, what happens to him. The game will lose its appeal. he may never the whole thing, but will the game expand if players like him dont bother anymore.

Agreed with some of the other posters, it needs to be simple for the masses. No mid-priced forwards was a problem this season, but that was mainly because for example none of the Arsenal forwards were nailed, Janssen was a bad alternative to Kane so Son played instead and lots of teams changed their system to either false 9 or 3 at the back.

Bad idea imo. Ye there was a lack of forward options at times the season but it meant that some managers would have adopted to 352 formation quicker and thus making the lack of options in a certain position something that can be exploited very beneficially when it works out.

With the hybrid position, you'll still be playing 352 but it will layout as 343 in the game so what's the point in any case.

    10. Ziro

      This won't happen imo.

The team starts 3-4-3 and there is an injury to a CB in the 25th minute, the team shifts to 4-4-2 with the inside left forward shifting to midfield. What points will he get?

I think Andy was suggesting that the FPL manager decides whether the player is a midfielder or a forward for the current game-week. So what actually happens to the player in real life shouldn't affect it.

He appears to want to include 6 midfielders but only 2 forwards in his squad and then play all six midfielders in his team, one of them as a forward.

I don't see his problem if he still wants to include 2 genuine forwards in his team; it doesn't matter if there are no good mid-price candidates for the 3rd forward position - just play 3-5-2.
Does he really want to include only one decent genuine forward in his squad and effectively play 3-6-1 (but with one of the 6 midfielders only scoring as if he was a forward)?

As others have already said, this would be an unnecessary complication. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Won't we just always select the mid-option out of the F/M classification for any player? 1 more point for a goal and 1 for a CS.

But it is as you've mentioned, not broke, don't fix.

Not necessarily but it probably would be rare.

For example - there's no good cheap forwards you want but there's a couple of midfielders you like. You could then cheapen the midfield with first 5 then still select a mid priced midfielder you want to play up front instead.

Im not sure if this would work, although i like the idea. My concern would be whether it might actually serve to further reduce the pool of players everyone would choose from.

For example. Sigurdsson 181 pts and 9 goals - so 9 points less (all things being equal) as a forward gives him 172 points for 7.4m. Comparing that to this years forwards he would pretty much have been a permanent fixture in my team (lean periods aside).

There are others, Coutinho is a better example perhaps. The issue being the price difference, a mid being usually slightly cheaper for the scoring equivalent, so if you can fill a slot with an equivalent scoring player for less you would, leaving you more to spend elsewhere.

Bonus points for a goal are different for both positions so it's a no.

I'd like to see this happen, am worried however, about the impact something like this would have on wingbacks. Losing the clean sheet potential for someone like Alonso kills his attractiveness

        Wouldn't mind this

I'd be happy though if they just sorted out the AOA chip - removed it or replaced it!

Identifying OOP players is part of the skill of the game, selecting a mixture of players that are more attacking than their categorisation is part of the game ... why take this requirement away ?

I really hope the likes of spurs and pool mids stay around the 8-9 price bracket.

This year we had a lack of mid price forwards. Next could be a severe lack of mid price midfield. Otherwise if all the popular picks are now 10+ million the game would be worse off imo.

I think most of them will move up to 9-9.5m

Alli will be £10m+ I imagine.

If that's the case though we would have to go even cheaper on defense. Or sacrifice both 4th and 5th mids just to get in a extra 'heavy hitter'. We need players across all the mid point price brackets not just the 10+ and then the 4.5s.

Feel free to disagree just creating discussion but would be horrible if I have to have a 4.5 4th mid 4.5 5th mid and then 5 4.5 defense just to get a decent attack.

You'll have to sacrifice something somewhere, happens every season.

            This was my GW1 midfield

            Hazard - Eriksen - Firmino - Remond - Capoue

Which is balanced because you have one heavy hitter. 2 mid priced, a low end mid. and a bench fodder.

If erikson and firmino were 9.5 and 10 that line up would be unobtainable.

Exactly!! so we would have to play more 4.5 fodder in our team to get all the new expensive players in because there will be little to no options left between 8-9 million

But there will be options there - Sane, Sterling, King potentially, Ozil, Pedro.

We don't know who's going to move teams yet either.

Alli must be £10m+. He's playing basically as a striker, but since his position in the formation is listed in midfield, he will stay as a midfielder. Must be 10+ priced.

          Hear hear.

No matter who is priced as what people will panic at the start of the season that they can't build their team with 7 high priced attackers.

          Happens every season 🙂

But this season there was a lack of mid price forwards maybe because of ighalo and vardy ruining things before. To create variety in the game we need players in all price brackets. To have 3 10+ players from one team would seem excessive.

How much say does Mark have in deciding changes for next season? i.e. should Sanchez be classed as a forward (he shouldn't)? How much should Harry Kane cost?

Does a committee over at FPL decide these things? Is there much transparency in the process?

Aw thanks mate very kind of you.

Erm bit of a mixed bag tbh, in terms of my main ML I pushed from 4th to 2nd which won me cash, despite being about 90 pts behind before 37! But in terms of OR I think I underperformed; was in top 4k last year so wanted 10k at least.. sadly it wasn't to be, ended up at 21k which as I said was below expectations. Paid the price for an awful November when I just couldn't get anything right!

Good stuff. Will have a listen.

Not sure I agree on pricing; 15/16 was a relative oddity but they're normally pretty good at optimizing for £100m squad. Personally think more likely there'll just be too many decent heavy-hitter options at the start for the spots, but we'll see.

Cheers MTP! Yeah it could be totally wrong and they could rebalance it of course, but I feel like it was a really interesting one this year given what happened the year before and fancied some future gazing. Don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that they'd want us to start choosing our big guns though.. especially if they start giving a role to more defensive players it could really shake down the way I've suggested! But yeah, all idle speculation at the moment 🙂

A few comments re prices for next season.

Every year we tend to over estimate the prices of players en masse. We will have a few surprises but i'm convinced the priority of FPL, when setting prices, is to make a game that is playable within the 100 mill budget...and that's why they don't get carried away over pricing every player in the game.

        We'll see....

I think normally that might be the case, but this season very few of the mid-price options did anything of note, as a result FPL Towers may be forced to keep some of the more impressive ones under 10.0

            1. Dr Dream
              • 11 Years
              6 years, 11 months ago

Their first priority is to make a game that is playable from the off.

We have a template early on for most teams based on cost...for example 2 big hitters in midfield, two mid priced and one cheap.

I'm sure FPL have the same sort of thought process when deciding prices...and resist the temptation to over price too many players.

            2. noquarternt

Chelsea will have the most expensive. City and Spurs the next most expensive and so on down the table. Quality performers who got huge scores will be higher and 'break' the price structure. Hazard, Sanchez, Kane etc.

It's always like this. The prices will be a lot lower than most are predicting. Everyone on here gets too carried away.

I'm hoping so. Been a bit unlucky with the woodwork and created a fair few chances - just have to hope we can convert more of them.

I try to stay away from United players, Ibra broke my rule this season 😉 If Crabtree can do it, so can I!

Similar hunch from me with KDB, if he scores instead of hitting the woodwork, that's nine more goals, and that's crazy numbers. Also the most likely to start week in week out for City imo. And good end of season form. Perhaps I should shut up myself, huh? 😉

Whatever about the woodwork/shooting (because in fairness he also missed a few absolute sitters this season), if United get the shooting boots on Pogba should triple his assist figures. The number of chances wasted by others from his passes was actually disgraceful.

Bolasie and Zaha are two players that I seem to happily jump on and off at the right time....same for Eriksen in seasons gone by for me when he was less consistent.

              Funny old game.

He didn't play the full season up front. By that logic a lot of #10s in the game have to be relassified as a striker.

Kane did score a lot and I think that justifies a 12.5m tag. 13m looks too inflated.

Didn't he also used to be thought of as a striker?

If anything he looks to me like a forward who was playing reverse OOP in midfield at the start of the season.

Always played #10 when a striker was fit and available.

Played up front few times otherwise.

                That I think doesn't warrant a reclassification.

13 games as a centre forward, 13 games as a secondary striker, 6 games as a right winger, 2 games as a left winger and 1 game as an attacking midfielder.

Played a couple of front last season as well.

                  Striker for me.

                    That screams midfielder to me.

                          (26 games/ 34 games)*100 = 76.47%

So by PoP's own claim he should be reclassified as a forward? 😉

        A) A club legend, who doesn't play anymore, a safe choice.

People are worrying too much about price next year on here, it seems to me. FPL won't be stupid; surely they'll make things just overpriced enough so you can't afford the whole "dream" team but fairly priced enough so that people will see a point in playing the game. Their aim, after all, is to get people to play their game, not to get people to leave it. If there is a multitude of quality players coming into the PL over the off season (e.g. Griezmann, Aubameyang etc), and the performers from last season all stay in the PL, they won't give them all unreasonable prices, they'll bring all prices down a little so things will be affordable. It seems like the logical thing for them to do instead of buff up all prices and make things less happy for casuals when they can only afford Kane, Sanchez and Alli before they fill up their defence with 4.5's

If there are price increases at the sharp end of the game then we need fair pricing at the mid to lower end as well to get a decent squad. It will be impossible to get Kane/Sanchez/Jesus/Hazard for example without viable options in the mid priced range like Antonio/King/Lallana/ etc and a mid bench fodder spot.

I suspect one has to go cheap defence competely. I hope Holding/Holgate/Mawson/Stephen/Yoshida dont go to 5.0 or we are screwed. I dont see how to fit in premium defenders to be honest unless I downgrade a heavy hitter in mid.

With my initial lineup, my plan is to have cover for 4 of the top 6 teams in the front 7. Liverpool lose out due to champs league qualifiers and Man U is a minefield. J.King/Antonio/Vokes are punts.

Defence will be 4.5s only with 2 playing 4s from promoted teams. Heaton is a season pick and Im hoping for a playing 4 keeper like Pickford emerges.

        Heaton 5.0/4.0 = 9

        Evans 4.5 Holding 4.5 Mawson 4.5 (playing 4.0x2) = 21.5

        Hazard 11 Antonio 7 J.King 7 Sanchez 12 (bench fodder 4) = 41

        Kane 12 Jesus 10.5 Vokes 6 = 28.5

        0 ITB

Sacrifices may have to be made to get a balanced team, but for me it will be easy... Hazard>Fabregas should give me some loot to spread around the team - not going to have Hazard unless he finds some serious consistency, whenever I brought him in he stopped scoring... Something like 4 goals in my team and only one double figure haul 🙁 .

I'll go Iheanacho for that 3rd striker. I'd rather get Firmino than Mane and then get King as one of the other midfielders (assuming he is not reclassified). I'd love to get Sigurdsson in there somehow too.

              Mane & 5.5m > Siggy & King

Ignore Liverpool mids point sharing nonsense?

The goals do tend to be shared amongst them though. That said, I do agree Mane is the best option as he is the most explosive but he is also the most expensive and I wouldn't expect a 5.5 to compensate for having reasonably regular goals and/or assists for Siggy/King. In other words, I would expect Firmino and Siggy/King to do better than Mane and John Smith from Not-a-Hope FC. I suppose it depends if poor John will be benched or be used a playing midfielder though.

        Spurs - Alli, Eriksen, Son
City - KdB, Sane, Sterling, Silva (if cheap), new buys
Chelsea - Hazard, Pedro, Willian, Fabregas
Liverpool - Mane, Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana, even Wijnaldum

Picking the right mids next season, gonna be so tough. Reckon there'll be a lot of hot bunking like this season. Especially if Sanchez stays at/in Arsenal/PL, that already down to two spots (for price bracket of players above) with other two spots for cheapish fodder.

The money in PL is just ridiculous. Huddersfield or Reading, which ever barely makes it to the PL, will just by that win ~£100M, and even in the worst case scenario of immediate descending back to Championship they will be handed another in the end of the season £74M just for the visit - the same sum that Sunderland and others get now that they go down. And that's just the TV money they get automatically, without sponsorship deals, ticket sales, or better league position. In comparison, Ajax's whole yearly revenue is ~£70M. AS Monaco's budget for this season was £126M.

Yup. When China's got money, football is ruined. When Sunderland, Newcastle and even fecking Nottingham have budgets bigger than continental league top clubs, that makes football exciting. 🙄

I'd love it if transfer fees and agents got banned, with squad size restrictions and prohibition of loaning players. The FIFPro plan.

Completely agree ! Unfotunately European football died a long time ago. Theres no way continental clubs can compete.

                http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=2017/matches/index.html#dw/1068

                😉

In fact, Bundesliga is healthier and wealthier than ever, La Liga is, erm, strong in any case, and Serie A and Ligue 1 are coming back and even Netherlands and Belgium are rising again.

It's not that continental leagues were weak, they are not. It's just that the money poured in PL is absolutely fudging ridiculous.

Could do with something closer to the draft system, but not sure how that would work across domestic and international leagues/laws/currencies.

              Agreed.

AFL in Australia has nailed it (draft), along with salary caps. But then they're the only ones who play it.

Not sure what you mean. I don't think the system is that different from English one in France or Netherlands. There just plainly is less money in those leagues.

                  6 years, 11 months ago

I mean the english system doesn't work with colleges feeding the nfl. But even if something similar was somehow implemented here - imagine players and revenue would just chase the £ to another country.

On why the PL is generally so 'rich'? No idea, perhaps we're just morons here when it money spending & inward 'investment'.
