Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Monday

Joe Allen’s injury is a turning point for Wales and an untimely blow for Stoke City. Elsewhere, a former Fantasy favourite comes to the fore to help Iceland make World Cup history, while Burnley assets continue their fine October form.

Here are the notes from a tense night of decisive World Cup qualifying action.

Allen joins international casualties…

Stoke City’s task of taming Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City attack may well have suffered a major blow following Joe Allen’s withdrawal for Wales last night.

Allen was an integral figure for the Welshmen against the Republic of Ireland prior to his departure – a turning point in the encounter which eventually saw the Irish prevail by a single goal.

Allen was withdrawn on 37 minutes following a head injury and will now be an early doubt for Stoke’s Gameweek 8 encounter.

Owned by just 2.3%, his relevance as a Fantasy asset is minimal. Nonetheless, his potential absence will surely be felt by Mark Hughes’ men, making their task of nulifiying City’s attacking threat all the more difficult.

A good break for Gylfi…

Helping your country to its first ever World Cup finals will have gone quite a large way towards persuading Gylfi Sigurdsson that this season might actually turn his way.

The challenge now is to bring his international form back with him to Merseyside.

The midfielder has endured a woeful start to his career with Everton, scoring a spectacular goal against Hajduk Split in the Europa League and…that’s it.

His goal and assist in a historic 2-0 win over Kosovo last night reminded us all of his talent and built on the signs of a personal revival hinted at in his most recent domestic outing.

Everton lost 1-0 at home to Burnley in Gameweek 7, but there was an improvement in both the team and Sigurdsson – the Icelander led the way with seven chances created and also had three shots on goal.

The Toffees still haven’t been revived following a cruel opening schedule, in which they played both Manchester sides, Spurs and Chelsea over four brutal Gameweeks.

But aside from a Gameweek 9 visit by Arsenal, the fixtures now fall favourably until the Merseyside derby on December 10.

Sigurdsson’s struggles, however, have reduced him to the role of a 3.2%-owned disappointment who has lost close to half of his managers, and 0.3 of value, since the season kick-off.

…and Burnley assets as well

Sigurdsson set up Iceland’s clinching goal last night, scored by Burnley’s Johann Berg Gudmondsson – his second strike of the international break.

The Clarets midfielder remains a fringe Fantasy option, though his Burnley team-mates also maintained positive form.

Jeff Hendrick set up the Republic of Ireland’s winner, from West Brom’s James McClean, that broke Welsh hearts in Cardiff, while team-mate Stephen Ward earned back-to-back clean sheets and an assist over the two matches for Martin O’Neill’s side.

Ward, with 8.1% ownership, is the most popular Burnley player in FPL, and only Spurs’ Ben Davies has enjoyed more transfers-in among defenders than his 106,000+ ahead of Gameweek 8.

Sean Dyche’s side enjoy favourable fixtures through to Gameweek 18, with a trip to Man City and a visit from Arsenal the only two sticking points. Beaten just once all season, confidence in his squad remains high ahead of West Ham’s Gameweek 8 visit.

Elsewhere…

The showdown in Cardiff featured a number of other Premier League players.

For the hosts were Wayne Hennessey, Ashley Williams, Spurs defender Davies and Aaron Ramsey, who all played the full match, while Hal Robson-Kanu was given 71 minutes before being replaced by Sam Vokes, and Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn was brought on after 65 minutes for Leicester City’s Andy King.

Shane Duffy and Ciaran Clark joined the aforementioned Burnley trio and McClean in playing 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland, while Bournemouth’s Harry Arter was subbed off after 77 minutes.

A Marko Arnautovic corner set up Austria’s winner in Moldova.

The West Ham midfielder enjoyed a fine international break, also scoring in his country’s 3-2 win over Serbia last week.

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic provided an assist as the Serbians beat Georgia 1-0 to win Group D ahead of the Irish.

He played 77 minutes before being replaced by Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic. Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic lasted the full 90 and Southampton’s Dusan Tadic played until the 89-minute mark.

Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren overcame back and Achilles problems to turn out for 90 minutes for Croatia in their 2-0 win over Ukraine.

The centre-back is reportedly forced to take painkillers to get through matches and was omitted from Croatia’s previous qualifier against Finland.

He now looks well placed to form his regular central defensive partnership with Joel Matip against Manchester United on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp’s other alternative – Ragnar Klavan – is due in action tonight for Estonia against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Matteo Darmian could well be facing Liverpool in the United backline. He started Italy’s 1-0 win in Albania before being replaced by Chelsea’s Davide Zappacosta after 61 minutes. That could be significant given that Darmian is likely to be in Jose Mourinho’s plans for Saturday’s early kick-off at Anfield.

Regular right-back Antonio Valencia started against Crystal Palace last time out having been billed as a fitness doubt by Mourinho. The Ecuadorian may well be considered a risk by the United manager given that he is returning via a long-haul flight following his clash with Argentina in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini’s international break consisted of an 89th-minute substitute appearance last night.

The Italians finished as runners-up in Group G to Spain, who rang the changes in a 1-0 win in Israel.

Nacho Monreal, César Azpilicueta and Pedro were given their first starts of the October break, with the latter replaced after 76 minutes.

Man United keeper David de Gea was on the bench, while Man City playmaker David Silva missed the match through suspension, surely making his starting role against Stoke City all the more likely.

Finally, Brighton striker Tomer Hemed, currently serving a three-match domestic ban, played the full 90 minutes for Israel.

Wise to sell Liverpool Spurs and Utd. Assets for the next 2/3? For Chelsea and City?..

Spurs have Liverpool And Man U back to back after Bournemouth.

Utd have LIV TOT CHE in next 4

Liv have Utd tot back to back.

Chelsea and City meanwhile have beautiful fixtures. Short term as well as Long term

      1) With nearly 60% ownership, is it safe to get rid of Lukaku on a Wildcard? Does any of the panel have any experience of going without a highly owned player?

      2) How on earth has 4-3-3 become the formation of choice on FFS? Was Mark right all along about the "double pivot"?

      3) Will Mark extract his revenge when assessing Jonty's Wildcard?

      4) Is triple Spurs too much?

      5) It's just a matter of time before proven performers like Hazard and Sanchez score heavily. There are two types of manager: one that likes to bring in these players early and get ahead of the curve and ones that likes to wait for them to start scoring before bringing them in. Which type of manager are you?

      6) Will Mourinho's bus parking in the tough fixtures, drain the points away from their attacking players?

Regarding number 6, Mourinho parking the bus is an exagerrated term. Against teams like Liverpool that are easily exposed on counter attacks, defending and playing counter attack doesn't mean no goals. They can still score 2 or 3 that way. Same tactic worked against Barca's dream team with Inter and they scored 3 goals.

          Chelsea 4 - Man U 0
          Liverpool 0 Man U 0
          Man City 0 Man U 0
          Arsenal 2 Man U 0

If my memory serves me right the last two matches vs Spurs and Arsenal were rotated United sides as they'd given up on the league by then. Doesn't excuse the lack of goals mind.

Yeah, I think they had thrown in the towel in the league by that point. What I was getting at was the tactics employed in all of those games- try and shut up shop and nick a goal. Even when the league had gone they were still parking that bus.

Lukaku could help if they're still aiming to try and play on the break. We've yet to see him in a big game for United yet though, these next few should be a good test for him.

Last season Utd were a very different team. Mourinho in his second season now (usually a title winning one), current form compared to last season, the confidence. Last year Mourinho never considered his team fighting for the title. Totally different situation.

“Manchester United – for many years success was just routine and in this moment the last three years are to forget. I want the players to forget. I don’t want the players to think we have to do better and finish fourth. Finishing fourth is not the aim.” Jose Mourinho 05/07/2016

"We feel that we are a candidate to win the title. We know that others have the same ambitions as us.If, at the end of the season, somebody who is champion has been better than us, then great - that is football. In this moment as Manchester United football club, we cannot speak differently. We are going to fight for the title.' Jose Mourinho 12/08/2016

I think 4-3-3 has emerged because of 3 factors:

        1) There is no striker below 8.5 who has performed, this means more budget than usual in attack, pressurinsing the rest of the teams budget
        2) No obvious option has emerged as a 4th midfielder in the 5.5 - 7.5m midfielder bracket
        3) There are a wealth of options scoring well in defence, at all price points

As for point 3, I really hope so! The banter was excellent to watch when Mark's was dissected, best scoutcast I've seen.

And point 6, possibly yes. Although if Man U are ahead and the opposition chasing the game, there will be space to exploit their opponents on the counter. All depends whether Utd have a lead by the 70th minute or not I'd say. If they do, I could easily see them scoring 3 or 4 again.

Is the Jamie Vardy bandwagon a bit short sighted?

Lukaku might not be captainable in the next few weeks but most people are admitting they want him back in GW12. It seems risky to plan such an overhaul already since there is also an international break that week so potential for further injuries.

So, downgrading Lukaku to Vardy gives us 3m which means we can get one more premium midfielder. I am assuming the money goes there since spreading that money in defence will make it hard to get Lukaku back, even Alonso > 4.5m won't be enough for the Vardy upgrade..

However when looking at investing in midfield, the only premium midfielders that seem worth looking at are Liverpool (Salah/Coutinho) or Eriksen who also have mixed fixtures as well and then there is Hazard who is basically the same price as Lukaku anyway with a lot more doubts. Man City midfielders cost around 8m which is pretty easy to fit in any team structure.

It just seems crazy to me that Lukaku > Vardy is an automatic option for most.

Not a very well phrased question and perhaps I have bias here, but in short... Lukaku (+1FT) vs Vardy +3m???

I'm planning to do Jesus -> Lukaku GW12 so it's not that tough to get him in as you might think. Plus I can make transfers for the next weeks having that in mind. I'll certainly spread the 3M gained from doing Lukaku -> Vardy around the defense/midfield which will give me an advantage over Lukaku owners for the next weeks. Can easily recoup 1M to do Jesus -> Lukaku in GW12. But of course there is a risk involved due to his high ownership, but worth it imo.

Are the likes of Bournemouth and Everton worth considering on a wildcard as they look to "turn the corner" with some ok fixtures coming up?

ie. Daniels, Stanislas, King, Keane, DCL?

        1) With lack of options in the 7.5-9.5 price range in forwards (only Firmino and Vardy basically) and abundance for the same price bracket in midfield (The City trio, Coutinho, Salah,Mane, Mkhi and Alli to name some), is it wiser to play only 2 up top and have the 3rd striker as a bench fodder than to have two 4.5-5m midfielders as many here do? I expect every one of the midfielders I listed above to outscore Vardy and Firmino (even Sterling given the amount of minutes he is getting). Tempted by this on wildcard

        2) Is Lukaku's flat track bully tag a bit overused here? He was never in a side that is challenging for the title before or that could compete with the top 6. Lets be realistic playing for an Everton side that has been declining year after year is not the same as playing for a strong Man Utd team where he is the focal point. Now is his chance to prove his worth in the big matches.

Conte doesn't trust him for some reason. And he is a risky option as we don't know how long Morata is really out for. Conflicting reports. Some suggest he can make the Palace game which seems unlikely to me. But still if he is back after 2 or 3 weeks, I wouldn't want Bats for such a short period where his minutes are still not guaranteed.

        Best Man City option:
Stirling - Higher points ceiling but not as reliable and could be rotated or
Silva - Will start most games but might only get a trickle of points and more expensive.

        - Is the double-pivot really a price worth paying for a big 3 up front?

        - Is triple City attack too much for the next 2 or 3? (With Jesus as a placeholder for Morata)?

        - Does attacking rotation always end in tears? (Considering Chopo/Wood)

How long does Morata need to be ruled out, before it makes sense to transfer him out?

Assuming the notion that every FT is worth -4 and assuming that one would want Morata back when Aguero returns, is it really worth doing Morata for Jesus if Morata is out for example 2 GWs? Will Jesus outscore 5th mid / 4th defender by 8 points in 2 GWs?

        Cheers

        1. A 10.5m Jesus who plays 60mins or a 10.5m Hazrd who plays 90mins, On penalties, gets extra points for being a mid

        1. Who are your wc must haves?
        2. So many injuries... which one will have the biggest effect on the game and why?
        3. There have been a lot more cs this year - which has helped those with 4-5 at the back. Do you expect this to continue and will this mean that out traditional 343 is no longer the way to go?
        4. Are you going with 2 or 3 big hitters up front and how does that effect your team structure?
        5. Do you have a hazard/sanchez strategy?
        6. Is it worth going without kaku? He is so highly owned and done nothing wrong so far.

Why is nobody considering Rashford? With Utd likely to start shutting up shop Vs tougher opponents he could be a key figure in their counter attacking style of play great differential pick? Also on some corners & free kicks.

With Morata out injured does this enhance Hazards prospects or have a negative effect?

Last but not least. With everyone scrambling for 3 premium strikers early on has that left most teams completely unbalanced now the injuries have hit and premium defenders now seem to be the optimum choice?

Cheers guys look forward to it.

Has any of the Scouts rotated two cheaper keepers to beat DDG's score of 42 (huge) and if so which two?

Should I get DDG who at present is up there with the Kanes', Eriksons and the like and forget about the cheaper rotation pairs even though it takes away 1m from my outfield players?

Not a fan of rotating keepers myself, you can save a little money by picking your GK's understudy. I have Fabianski and Norvelt for example (although never seen a team on here with those two bar mine haha), happy to play him every week for save points and the odd cs thrown in. If Jones wasn't such value atm DDG would be a super pick!

            I have Fab/Nordfeldt as well.

Anyways to the q, ddg had prime opening fixtures which made him,a decent pick. 6/7 cs is still a bit more than expected, even with easy fixtures.
Now his fixtures turn and it seems a bad time to get him in.

Yes Fab and Fors / Lossl aren't too far behind him actually.

I do consider the extra 1m I have to spend important, but it will grate on me if Utd. keep pulling the cleanies from the harder fixtures and DDG starts to open up > 50 points on my cheapies.

        David Silva or Sterling?

Leaning towards Silva looking at their stats for the season so far:

        - Greater overall involvement (0.9 mins per touch v 1.4 , 25.9 passes received in final third per match v 18.3)
        - Greater bonus potential (17 BPS baseline per appearance v 2.8)
        - Greater assist potential (0.9 big chances created per appearance v 0.2)

Sterling does have a greater goal threat but Silva's is not unsubstantial (7.7 penalty area touches per appearance v 4.9 , 2.3 goal attempts in box per appearance v 1.3 , 0.7 big chances per appearance v 0.4)

        Thoughts?

He is now 5,9, and I've trusted him for several weeks now. He is THE one i blame for not being in top 100K.

        a) Downgrade to free up funds for a potential Morata/Hazard/Jesus/Countinho/Salah?
        b) Keep him and play him after the City away game?

Do you agree that Mkhitaryan is out of form?

Second behind Silva for assists (would be joint top had he got the assist for Stoke)

Second behind Silva for big chances created.

Third behind Silva and KDB for chances created.

Five assists and one goal in seven PL games.

Two points behind Eriksen who's the top scoring mid.

Blanked in the last two league games but with one goal and one assist in Europe in the game inbetween the blanks.

Do you think that shows someone out of form or is group think convincing everyone that he is because they want a shiny new toy?

        1) Are we playing 4-3-3 right if we dont have any premium defenders at our back four? The idea of this formation have risen because of premium wing-backs and if you dont have any, maybe 3-4-3 with fourth mid like Richarlison is better? Or should we sacrifice one of our 4-3-3 midfielders to have some premium defs?

        2) Leicester defence does not appear on many Wildcards, why do you think is that? They have been strong in defense historically and both Maguire (5.1) and Fuchs (4.9) have attacking potential. Which one is the best pick?

        3) Fresh news about Aguero back in light training. It is not necessarily means he is back for the weekend, but his rest could be much shorter than we expected. How does it affect your transfers/wildcards? Is Sterling/Silva + Jesus double up still an option? Maybe we just need an escape plan.

Silva is the key new recruit for me - chief creator - no matter who is up front.

Jesus was always temporary to become Lukaku later, Morata sooner- or possibly now Aguero.

But it does leave me wondering about Sterling.

Yeah , had from gw1 but he has not "gone on" of late.
Easy to lose with his drop in form and tougher fixtures ahead.

That's what they need to look into and discuss, if he's really lost form.

Goal and assist in Europe between blanks in the league, robbed of an assist V Stoke, numbers almost identical to Silva etc.

For those still holding their WC beyond this week are there any potential opportunities you see to use it, like a swing in later fixtures or the Nov international break? Obviously if my team really needs it I'd use at straight away but if no major surgery was needed it'd be good to know.

Are we all getting a bit carried away with the South American players seeing as though it's highly likely they may not start with just a day between long haul travel and games. No time to rest and prepare for the Saturday game

Trying to cover the bigger teams with the better clean sheet potential long term, I have Davies Otamendi Monreal Jones.
There is not enough money for the nailed Chelsea defenders, so I'm tempted by Courtois. Any reason not to?
Burnley may have looked solid so far but I think that investing in the big teams' defences is safer than gambling on mediocre teams with "good" fixtures.

A question on "exaggerated" international break injuries, especially to key players.

Are we at the point now where we need to scrutinise more closely alleged "injuries" to players from certain clubs?

Can we trust any flags before or during these breaks?

We're seeing many highly owned players: Phil Jones, Lukaku, Morata, Aguero, all make Lazarus-style recoveries breaking medical records by weeks, by the end of the international fixtures, having had a nice little fortnight off.

It's cost me points I am aggrieved.

Ok but Morata was wheelchair bound 2 weeks ago, now he's on twitter on a racing bike. Aguero "narrowly avoided death" and couldn't breathe without wincing, now he's running laps like Mo Farah.

I binned off Aguero for Morata, and almost did Morata and Lukaku for Jesus and Lacazette!

There needs to be a bright green "this is a fictional injury flag" added alongside the red, yellow and orange ones.

I.E: Some managers are clearly using the international break to manage key players' minutes, notably injury-prone, not-backed up/tough to replace from the squad regular first team players.

They're also holding back return from injury of this type of player before the break I think.

Morata has no credible cover or replacement. Neither do Aguero, Lukaku, Phil Jones etc etc.

Haha. Sorry mate - this was supposed to go under Jonty's Hot Topic for the Scoutcast.

Rashford could be great value at 7.6. Granted, he's got a few tough fixtures coming up, but he's getting plenty of minutes and he is picking up points.

Okazaki is also cheap, getting considerable game time and has some strong fixtures.

            • 10 Years
            6 years, 6 months ago

Honestly, Rashford is a non-option. Martial will continuously rotate with him (and outscore him).

            Please don't get Okazaki.

Either get a 4.5 perma-bench or 8.5+ imo. So much better value in cheaper kids than the strikers

Which three is better to play along davies and naugjton on a 3-4-3:
      A) daniels sutter mee
      B) luiz suttner mariapa
      C) otamendi daniels mariapa

2 of those will be benched in most games

Has anyone rotated two cheaper keepers to beat DDG's score of 42?

      If so, who? tx

One would have to add to that the difference between 5.5 defender (initial price) like Otamendi or Davies, and best 4.5 defender (Ward)

Just interested in the goalkeepers tbh.

Just want to highlight that having a set and forget premium G/K like DDG is the less best option points and value wise in that 2 budget friendly ones can comfortably outscore him with good rotation.

Nah! That's what I've gotten away from as playing Elliot every week is a no go especially with no playing back up.

Yeh, I was hoping someone would put up a score beating DDG's with their rotating pair, I'm sure they're out there!

      DDG
      Bavies Otamendi Kola (Mbemba Rosenior)
      Mhiki Choupo-M Ritchie GroB (Carroll)
      Lukaku Kane Morata

      1FT.

      A) Morata > Jesus
      B) Morata > Vardy

Also should I take a hit to swap Mhiki for Sterling/Silva/Sane?
Or maybe upgrade a mid? Wouldn't have much money to play with unless i went with Vardy...

Conte might play a weaker team against Palace and rest the big guns for Roma!

Eden Hazard - "I will miss some games"

Eden Hazard has warned that his recovery from injury is not yet over.

‘I missed football for three months, it’s not easy to come back after a big injury,’ he said while on international duty. ‘But I worked during the summer – I just want to play football. ‘I will miss some games, I will play bad for some games. I just want to play football and try to bring the best of me.’

      Hi All,

Please rate my Wild Card Team!

      Pope Elliot

      Mbemba Alonso Luiz Ward Cedric

      Sterling Coutinho Richarlison Choupo-Moting RLC

      Vardy Jesus Kane

The team above also gives me the flexibility to play 3-4-3 as well as 4-3-3.

Any changes you would make? I've tried to get in as many city and chelsea players as I could afford! Would love to get Hazard in too! I can downgrade Alonso to Otanmendi and get Hazard instead of Coutinho, but then no Liverpool cover

not touching my team until Friday now. Need some price falls and rises, but I'm sure that some sort of news in the pressers will totally disrupt it anyway
