Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 6 – Monday

West Brom cause early panic, but Arsenal ride the storm as Alexandre Lacazette becomes the latest premium striker to catch the eye in Gameweek 6.

Here are the notes from Monday night’s fixture.

Lacazette stakes his claim

In a Gameweek awash with goals from big-name forwards, it was perhaps predictable that Alexandre Lacazette would have his say.

The Frenchman headed home a first-half opener after Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick struck the bar and followed that up with a second-half penalty.

That confirmed what we already knew – Lacazette will monopolise spot-kicks and deny Sanchez that avenue for points.

Arsene Wenger offered more on this post-match.

“Yeah, until now I gave it to him. I observed him a little bit because we work as well on penalties in training. And I think he took his penalty well tonight”

The brace took Lacazette to four goals for the season – all scored in home matches.

That’s significant, given that he failed to start at Liverpool and was withdrawn on 65 minutes at Chelsea and after 78 minutes at Liverpool. He clearly has to earn more pitch-time and produce points away from home before we can elevate him in our pecking order.

However, those spot-kicks could be significant. Notably, Alvaro Morata is currently the top transfer target up front, despite the fact that he is expected to give way to Eden Hazard as Chelsea’s penalty taker.

As for Sanchez, he showed glimpses and nice touches in a support role on the left, but never made penetrating runs that threatened to hurt West Brom. He enjoyed just two touches in the penalty area, with all four of his efforts arriving from range.

Sanchez will certainly need to show more if we are to consider investment. With the big-hitting forwards so prominent, he needs a big return to change the current landscape.

Aaron Ramsey – deployed on the right of Lacazette – was arguably the more impressive midfield option on show. He earned the assist for the penalty and was more prominent in the Baggies penalty area.

Gunners escape with shut-out

The Arsenal defence was stretched at times by a notoriously limited West Brom attack.

The Baggies could, and should, have benefited from at least one first-half goal; Jay Rodriguez was particularly unfortunate not to have been awarded a penalty.

But Arsene Wenger’s defence held on to earn a third successive clean sheet, with the highly impressive Nacho Monreal fetching bonus points for a third straight match.

His Bonus Points System (BPS) score of 33 won him two bonus points and continued his superb season for Baseline BPS.

With Brighton and Swansea City next at the Emirates, further returns would seem likely for the Spaniard and his defensive team-mates.

Baggies empty-handed

West Brom suffered another defeat at the Emirates, despite those best efforts in the first half.

Tony Pulis retained the 3-5-2 formation he trialled in the cup against Man City last week, with Kieran Gibbs and Allan Nyom utilised as wing-backs.

The Baggies boss chose to drop Matt Phillips to the bench, and with Chris Brunt also kept in reserve, their best two deliverers of a set-piece were absent for much of the match.

That left Gibbs and Jake Livermore on dead-balls and they set up just a single attempt from a set-play situation.

Despite our expectations, and last year’s stats, Ahmed Hegazi’s Gameweek 1 goal is West Brom’s only strike from a set-piece all season.

Hegazi’s 1.4 million owners will now be hoping that Pulis retains a three-man defence for the visit of Watford in Gameweek 7, or that their man can retain his start even in a back four. Neither looks certain.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Start Hegazi (WAT) or Mee (eve)? No brainer if Hegazi is a guaranteed starter but not sure I want to risk it in case he is benched and gets a cameo.

Hoedt is too much of a rotation risk for my liking. He's probably first choice but you can't imagine Yoshida and Stephens would be content sitting on the bench all season. Pellegrino will have to rotate at some point to keep them all happy.

Yeah unsure on getting rid off firmino before newcastle but he hasnt looked good since I got him on WC. Lukaku with 56% ownership home to palace could hurt me. Azpi looks as dangerous as alonso what I've seen so far this season

      Firmino

Are people too hasty getting rid of Firmino? Sadio Mane is back from suspension and he has been a big influence for Firmino.

Firmino's points with Mane on the pitch - 26 from 3 matches including 6 bonus points.
Firmino's points without Mane on the pitch - 6 from 3 matches.

With Coutinho back as well, surely it will only be a matter of time before Firmino is getting goals, assists and bonus points again.

I have kept him and think he will come back to haunt those who transfered him out.

        Binned Firmino for Vardy.

Can see Firmino being rotated, with Coutinho, Salah and Mane all firing someone needs to miss out.

They'll play all four against weaker sides especially at home, but in tougher games it's asking a lot of the other two in midfield to play all four of those players. Firmino is at risk IMO.

Vardy is safe as houses in that team and great fixtures coming up.

Coutinho will drop deep with Salah, Firmino, Mane as front 3. That has always been the plan.

They might get rested but that applies to other players from teams involved in the CL.

Look at Liverpool's schedule. Most are away trips including a trip to Moscow as well. ITB coming up which means even more travelling for the Brazilians. Their only home fixture is against Utd which will be a tight game.Expect a lot of rotation for Liverpool assets.

      1. Is it worth keeping triple Spurs on GW8 wildcard? If not who are the best options. Kane looks a certain.
      Davies, Eriksen & Alli?

      2. Who are the best defender options from Cheslea & City GW8 onwards?
Are Mendy, Walker, Azpi, Alonso etc worth the investment or go with cheaper option like Otamendi & Luiz.

      3. Is it worth going with three 10m+ strikers or can Vardy/Firmino be value for money over them?

They may not concede many big chances, but they certainly concede a lot of goals. Keeping goals out is sort of their point. If they are failing that then this myth has turned into reality.

After a week of "Is Aguero essential" rather than us asking "Is Morata essential" is it not time to pick three that have a good run of fixtures and hold them?

I've personally got Morata, Kane and Vardy and see no reason to change that.

Hearing a lot of talk about people using WC during the break to catch price rises and freshen up their team a bit. Is this a mistake? Fair enough if you absolutely have to use the WC but why not save it as long as possible? Remember there are 5 teams in the CL this season and we will have about 8 GWs in 35 days from the end of November. There will be injuries and rotations. So is using the WC in GW8 just for the sake of it a bit premature?

My wc team caught 4 or 5 risers.. which means i would have been out of budget to get them this week.. so in short catching risers as long as they are long term keepers is a good way to use wc.

      2. Coverage is surely a factor now. If a big team wins 5-0 you will want some points. Alonso for chelsea, Eriksen for spurs, Firmino for Liverpool, Laca from Arsenal, Jesus from City?

      3. Crystal Palace will surely score after uniteds game? Worth a punt on Benteke?

For all the hype over premium wing backs, are they worth it over cheaper CBs of the same team, who tend to get more bonus points and are considerably cheaper?

      For eg. Jones vs Valencia
      Otamendi vs. Walker
      Monreal vs kolasinac
      Luiz vs. Alonso etc..

It feels like CS are still the bread and butter of defenders, and getting points are still fairly inconsistent.

Thoughts on wildcarding in the next international break (GW11-12)?
Only 4 gameweeks between the two breaks.

Could drop Lukaku for Morata before liv and get him back for GW12 when his fixtures are good again.

Vardy on the other hand doesn't look too good from GW12. Could drop him then.

3rd striker spot below 10.0 looks poor from GW12. Firmino maybe the best "cheaper" one.

There're several other fixture shifts too.

Ritchie/NEW looks poor then, SOU also if anyone still has players from them.

Bournemouth def/Daniels and Watford a lot better than now.
Maybe Palace will improve, they have great fixtures from GW12 onwards.

      1. Karan14
        • 8 Years

Firmino actually looks a good option from GW12.

Soton defender can be moved for Daniels after GW11.

If someone like me who has 0 Cheslea & City assets going to GW7 wildcard looks good for GW8.

        1. Lyonnais
          • 11 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

Yes, Firmino does look good then. Probably the best one below 10.0.

Cheaper ones with good fixtures then are Rooney, Defoe/King and Benteke.
But for now, beside the fixtures, nothing would suggest to bring them in. They need to improve a lot to become options.

          Only leaves 3x 10+ or 2x 10+ and Firmino.

Wow, FPL then really needs to get their stuff together. I wanted to take hits and play the FHC. It should allow the user to make transfers then play the chip just like your hits will still be taken when you play a wildcard after making transfers.

For all the stats, logical thought, dullard and safe moves - what’s the feeling on owning at least one player that brings a real sense of excitement to your team? Sane comes to mind, you can easily talk yourself out of having him in your team due to rotation fixtures, but he is electric to watch at the moment. Surely playing for points and longevity is one thing, but as a game do we also owe it to ourselves to find thrills elsewhere?

If you created this team at the start of the season for 100m total and forgotten about it:

      Lossl (33 pts)
      Valencia (41) / Azpi (39) / Otamendi (34) / Davies (33)
      Silva (41) / Mkhi (40) / Gross (35)
      Aguero (C) (104) / Morata (48) / Lukaku (44)

      4.0 GK / 4.5 Mid / 4.5 Mid / 4.0 Def

You'd have 492 points. For reference the current world no 1 has 464 points.

So my question to the scoutcast is, should we be going with a 433, light in midfield but heavy up top and at the back? Along with Mark's (in)famous 4.5 double pivot?

Certainly seems viable in light of the severe dearth of good value mid-priced midfielders at the moment.

The 4.5m double pivot works fine with 4 or 5 at the back - but in a 343 formation it is both weak and inflexible, as Jonty correctly pointed out on an earlier Scoutcast.

From GW9 RLC for fourth mid looks anything but weak, unless we feel that Palace will go the whole season without scoring.

It's Roy, I'm not ruling that out.

I'll wager that GW7-8 WC's will very much favour RLC and another 4.5 with that in mind.

I could be wrong, but I would expect that most GW7-8 wildcarders who include RLC in their squads will be using him as an enabler and expecting him to stay on their benches most weeks.

            I wouldn't trust a couple of 4.5m midfielders to cover the 4th midfield spot in a 343.
They'll probably score less than a couple of 4.5m defenders and will probably only get you 2 or 3 points most weeks, so I would prefer either to have a better 4th midfielder or to play 4 at the back.

Of course, it is possible that RLC might yet turn out to be this season's Capoue, but I certainly wouldn't want to rely on that at this stage.

There's a wealth of premium forward options, there are some very consistent premium midfielders emerging: Eriksen, Salah, Silva, Mkhitaryan, and we can include Mane now he's back from his ban. Do you think it's a better strategy to invest in all of them instead of having three 10m+ forwards and a cheaper midfield?

This is in context of no great options as of yet in the budget or mid-priced bracket among midfielders. So say, a front line of

        Eriksen - Salah - Silva - Mkhitaryan
        Morata - Vardy - Firmino

or something along those lines, as opposed to Kane, Aguero etc.

It's more because with many of the currently high-scoring teams have played their chips early or just got lucky.

I expect the Hall of Fame leaders to finish with high rankings as usual by the end of the season.

But I don't think there is any single template team yet. We're not even sure what is this season's best formation, with 343, 433 and 532 teams all doing well.

The Hall of Fame leaders do appear to be a bit set in their ways though, and reluctant to abandon the tried and tested 343 formation.

But I think that FPL have cleverly set the prices this season so that other formations with 4 or 5 defenders become more viable.

Are we being spoiled with how consistently the top teams are scoring? Many top scorers so far(salah, mkhi, d. Silva, morata, lukaku, aguero to name some) are averaging 7-8 points per game - surely unsustainable over a season?

So, before the “Kane can’t score in August” theory, we had the “Kane can’t score without Dembele” saga. Given that all of Kane’s goals this season have come when Dembele is off the pitch, can we put the latter to bed?

Dare we even start to speculate that Kane can’t score when Dembele is on the pitch... 😉

Part of the Dembele theory was that when he didn't play then Dele Alli was dropping back into the double pivot.
That no longer applies, so Dembele is less essential than he used to be.

      Best combo for coverage:

A Kane Morata Kun + Mkhi
B Morata Kun Lukaku + Eriksen
C Morata Lukaku Kane + Silva
D Kane Lukaku Kun + Pedro/William/Alonso (or Hazard if can afford)

Do we have enough data to back up my sneaking but growing suspicion that midfielders aren't really worth bothering with?

With a couple of outliers, a couple of whom are not getting enough pitch time (Sterling), you need to spend 8+ million to get a midfielder who is capable of outscoring the likes of Valencia and Azpilicueta. Throw in the extra likelihood of rotation amongst midfielders compared to defenders and this makes them even less appealing.

A 5-2-3, with a couple of really good midfielders and an epic defence still allows a top-quality attack force AND:

It gets around the problem I am seeing a lot in board posts where people say "I have £x, should I get y or z?" Where x is a not-insignificant sum and players y and z are garbage midfielders or strikers, but they are all the poster can afford because there is so little value in the sub-5.5m bracket. A smaller number of quality players, with the extra cash reinvested in defence is looking, to me, a much better shout than paying 1-2 million above the base rate and getting poor performance out of these positions.

Can we agree that the pricing gurus at FPL Plaza have nailed it this season with the heavy-hitting forwards? Giving us a headache of choice.

Based on the current hauling from the premium form strikers such as Kane/Lukaku/Aguero/Morata/Lacazette and even Vardy - is this the season where to paraphrase SAF - "strikers win you game(weeks), defenders win you (mini)leagues"?
On the back of it - is Dave this season's Alonso?

Are sterling and Sane viable options to get into the Man City Midfield? Or is the threat of rotation for them too great and you should just go with Silva?

Both Sane and Sterling seem to be hitting form (differential?) and when they do play they are playing very attacking roles - sterling is also 0.5m/0.6m cheaper which could upgrade a cheap defender to a solid defender.

I'm sure I recall Mark saying there was a member's area development showing the heatmaps, shots etc. in conjunction with another teammate. Is this close? I heard a stat recently on the Guardian Podcast suggesting Alli only tends to assist Kane - the vast majority go to Kane. That's not necessarily crazy given Kane is the target but doesn't seem to be the case with Erikssen so I'm wondering if Alli-Kane is a real double up on Kane performing.

Ok, so what I did do was captain Vardy as I was bored of Kane, first time this season going non-dull

      Kane-13
      Vardy- (C) 6

      Should have been-
      Kane- (C) 26
      Vardy- 3

      Ten point swing.

Even just looking at that pen miss, another 4 for the goal and maybe bonus. Gutted. Back to dull picks for the foreseeable.

Pulled the wildcard at the last minute sold

      Chicharito goal
      Lukaku goal
      Eriksen goal
      Daniels assist
      Suttner clean sheet

Would have scored 80 points with original team plus Aguero who was coming in as my FT.

Ended up on 74 points with new team, so bit of a rollercoaster of a gameweek. Certainly feared the worst after the West Ham/Spurs game.

Rough: Alonso's 59 min 'cameo' and Vardy's penalty miss took the gloss off the GW. Alonso + Bavies delivered 1 pt while Ward's 8 pts mocked me from the bench.

Smooth: Couldn't decide up until the deadline whether or not to captain Kane or Morata, captained Morata who went on to better Kane.

Rough: Not me but my colleague has had as rough a season as it gets, having won our mini-league two season ago.

Bottom of nearly all his mini-leagues, 3.1m rank and keeps having players suspended:

      GW1: Fabregas red card
GW2: His replacement Arnautovic red card
      GW3: None
      GW4: Mane red card
      GW5: None
GW6: Brings in Hemed for a hit who scores, but now looks like getting a retrospective three game ban.

I did likewise for 86, but many of my fallback team did well so not as profitable as I'd hoped. Still at OR 2.4 million it was starting to get out of hand, back to 1.3 million now.

      Smooth!

Midfield of Silva, Eriksen and Richarlison along with Kane (c) and Aguero made up for a terrible defence of Elliot, Alonso, Davies, Jones and Mbemba.

      Other player was Firmino.

Now in top 300k in world and looking to get into that top 100k early on in the season.

      Rough
      Alonso on 59 mins....

      Smooth
Sold Lukaku, brought in Aguero C, that went well, kept and played Hemed and watched him outscore Lukaku, also kept Kane who also outscored him.

Just under a 400k rank rise and the best GW of the season so far without the highest owned player in the league, this week and a score of 76 without him felt pretty smooth.

Smoothest of the lot was to see United grind out a win and see Lukaku restricted to only one goal in a 'easy fixture' 🙂

Smooth - took a hit for Firmino - Mahrez - Antonio out Aguero - Ritchie - Ramsey in (5 pts vs 19 pts) . Two more hits and the team will be ok to start climbing the OR.

Rough - benching Dunk was a mistake but couldnt have foreseen it (Davies, Holgate couldnt be benched ahead of Dunk). WC decisions were bad so need 2-3 correct decisions and hits to fix it.

Loads seem to be selling Alonso after his 0 at the weekend, the last time he scored 0 he bounced back in a difficult fixture with a brace away to Spurs.

Is it dangerous to take such a short term view on an unquestionable long term pick, even more so with their upcoming schedule?

    36. Rains of Castamere

Rough: Last weekend, I decided to make an early transfer of Chicharito to Jesus (c) for the Palace match and before Jesus rose in price. Come Friday night, I just knew Jesus wasn’t going to play after his midweek exertions and I took a hit to bring Aguero in. First time I’ve ever brought someone in and then got rid before the deadline! Daft really – tried to be too clever – but ultimately I got the right outcome even though it cost me 4 points. Aside from that, poor returns from Alonso (0), Naughton (1) and Davies (1) combined matched 4.0m Mbemba (2) on my bench. Ritchie and Gross both blanked.

Smooth: Aguero captain, Kane, Lukaku gave me 42 points from my strikers. 9 each from Eriksen and Jones. 69 points (-4) gave me a very small green and feel pretty stuck at around 1.8m OR at the moment.

Smooth: 91 points with 2 hits and massive jump in rank (2.7m to 1.7m)

      Lacazette ➡ Agüero
      Özil ➡ Silva
      Pogba ➡ Ramsey
      Cédric ➡ Kolašinac

8 point hit which looks more or less smooth and I think it'll nicely pay off in long term. Eriksen, Salah, Stephen Ward did their job once again.

Rough: Morata vice captain and Firmino completing his hat-trick of blanks since I bought him.

      Wildcarded to a 5-3-2

rough - Mendy, Alonso & Davies all flopped

      Rough:
Decided to save a transfer rather than getting Sanchez and Morata for Mikhi and Jesus with my 3.4m ITB (still planning this transfer this week). If I'd have done it for a hit, I'd have an extra 14 points + 1FT.

      Mendy (0)
      Alonso (0)
      Jesus (0) --> Cork (2)
      Chalobah (0) --> Cedric (2)
      Fabianski (1)
      Davies (1)
      Vardy missed pen (-8)
      46 points
      4.3m GR

      Smooth:
      (K)ane (26)

Plus an amazing week in FFS Draft League 2. Since everyone avoided Man City rotation in favour of cheaper, more reliable midfielders, I have Sterling (13), Sane (16), D Silva (11) and Aguero (11), plus Pedro (8) and Morata (17), Kolasinac (6) and Maguire (5), giving me a total of 94 points, which I'm pleased with given that there's no captaincy in Draft. https://draft.premierleague.com/entry/256718/event/6

Went wing Back mad in my wc, I have a rough and smooth which goes with the matches

      Rough:

Out went: Kane, eriksen, alli, mkhi, Jones, firmino and a few others

So after the first game I was 42 points down, as much as I try and convince myself otherwise I would have captained Kane and my only spurs player now is bavies, hmmm

More rough: Mendy goes off at 30 mins with a booking not even 1 point

Third times a charm: Alonso goes off at 58 mins also with a booking

Should point out I'm in Japan for work so it was already a few hours of whiskey and sake in.

Further rough. Phone gets broken somehow

Smooth: Silva, Aguero, Morata save the day

      More smooth: Mo Salah

Very rough: Do not abuse shinji okazaki whilst you're in Japan, no further comments

Smooth: nice new bar for the 2nd half, even though jamie vardy is in my team, I'm a liverpool fan so SI the migs save was great even if it cost me 7 plus points

Rough $200 cab back to yokohoma after missing the train (granted I missed it by 4 hours)

Smooth: human tank kolasinac gets me 6 points,

Overall 2 points up vs non wc (think I've done my sums right)

Did the first part of the hokey pokey to get in Aguero (c) for Lukaku which paid off along with returns for Bellerin, Silva, Mee, Dunk, Salah and Kane. 81 points mean a good swing back of 500k ranks which I had lost in the previous week but now deterring from doing the second leg of the hokey pokey.

      Smooth - Silva and Kane

Rough - Özil and Dawson (although a cleanie was not expected was hoping Pulis bullying a tippy tippy Wenger team to result in a set piece goal or knockdown assist)

Smooth: 4 DEFs, 4 CSs; captained my highest scoring player; not leaving any points on the bench. Normally I'd be overjoyed at this but I don't own any of Kane, Aguero, Morata, Lacazette so .... 🙁

Still somehow 2nd in my ML tho

Rough: watching MCI score all these goals and KDB not be involved in hardly any of them (fixing on my WC next week).

(I know I'm not supposed to mention it but I feel like a right heel for not doing Jesus->Morata/Laca. Though Fraser->Brady was worth 3x the points. Only problem is 3*0 is 3. My transfer game this season has not been strong.)

Sold Morata to Kun (c) as part of a -4 taking cap off kane in the process.

      12pt loss from the move

      Smooth...
Kane C, kept Morata instead of taking a hit to bring Aguero (hesitated until deadline), two CS (Mee, Kolasinac), Eriksen, Alli.

      Rough...
Vardy's missed penalty - pissd me right off.

Won't complain - very first green arrow of a very rough season so far.

      Rough:
      - Vardy failing to convert his penalty cost me about 8 points.
      - Alonso's substitution after 58 minutes cost me 5 points.
      - Selling Kane for Aguero and making Morata vice-captain instead of captain cost me another 8 points.

      Smooth:
Still scored 72 points and rose 400k places overall.
And the squad is looking quite good, with money in the bank to improve it further.

Rough: Alonso captain in a week where all the big hitters scored. Vardys missed penalty cost me 9 points.

Smooth: Gained 2 points transfering in Bellerin over Kolasinac.

Jesus > Aguero(c) -4 worked out ok. Kane was vc so not a huge benefit but feel better owning Kun.

Rough - Gw6, played wc and scored 27 pts and gw rank of 4.95m.

Smooth - Gw7, avoiding fpl for a week, saving my ft and scoring 96 pts and a gw rank of 20k.

Rough - missed the deadline due to being ill and sleeping a lot (had 2 FT). Son no show.
Smooth - because I missed the deadline, I didn't swap captaincy from Kane to Lukaku as I had planned. Got Suttners 6 points off the bench.

Had a decision to make to get a City player in. Mahrez to Silva or Morata to Jesus. Made the right call.

      Silva 11 points
      Morata (C) 34 points
      Total 45 points

Swapping Morata to Jesus would have given me.

      Mahrez 2 points
      Lukaku (VC) 14 points
      Total 16 points

Good call gave me 29 point gain.

      2FT 3 transfers made -4
      Bertrand/Eirksen/Hernandez 16pts ➡ Kolasinac/Atsu/Aguero 19pts -1 on the moves but Captain Kun

Jones Kolasinac Salah Kane Lukaku scored well to get me 74 -4
3rd green arrow and going in the right direction 🙂

Rough - Did Alli/Quaner > Jesus/Brady for -4, ended up getting Carroll's 2 points which I would have got anyway.

      Smooth - Kane (C)

    UCL Fantasy Discussion

With high profile fixtures like Dortmund vs Real, Atletico vs Chelsea and PSG vs Bayern in the offing - is now the right time to use the WC? Or is it better to wait until the end of matchday 2 when fixtures tend to take advantage of the fixtures that tend to repeat in 3 and 4?

I think your team is pretty good & not in need of many changes. Maybe Long to S. Ward? So the FT doesn't go to waste. Burnley have great Home Fixtures & Ward seems to get the most BPS when they keep a CS

1 FT (0.1m ITB), thinking of using my WC over the Int break.

    Foster Elliot
    Bailly Davies Mee Mbemba Cedric
    Alli Willian Ritchie Matic Carroll
    Jesus Kane Lukaku

Willian to Ramsey for a 1 week punt sound like a plan?

Tempted to keep my FT for next week but doubt it will happen.
It's not very easy on the eye I know but I'm 230,000th

    Foster - Elliot
    Maguire - Bavies - Ward - Clark - Dunk
    Mkhi - Silva - Eriksen - Gross - Woodburn
    Rashford - Kane - Jesus

Thinking Rashford to Lukaku and downgrade Silva for -4
