Line-Up Lessons – Gameweek 37 – Part Two

Chelsea make nine changes and Southampton seven to keep us all off balance ahead of the season finale, while Swansea City do the complete opposite to secure their top-flight status.

Having published Part One yesterday, we now roll out the second instalment of our Gameweek 37 teamsheet summary, outlining the trends and tactics on show and offering early insights into the likely line-ups for Sunday’s final-day fixtures.

Chelsea

Starting XI: Begovic; Zouma, Terry, Ake; Azpilicueta, Kante, Chalobah (Fabregas 78), Kenedy (Aina 75); Willian, Hazard; Batshuayi (Pedro 84).

  • Antonio Conte made nine changes from the side that beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 for the home clash against Watford, with Asmir Begovic, Kurt Zouma, John Terry, Nathan Ake, N’Golo Kante, Nathaniel Chalobah, Kenedy, Willian and Michy Batshuayi replacing Thibaut Courtois, Gary Cahill, David Luiz, Victor Moses, Marcos Alonso, Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and Diego Costa.
  • The Chelsea boss did stick with the 3-4-3 system though, with Willian and Eden Hazard playing either side of central striker Batshuayi. Kante and Chalobah combined in central midfield, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Kenedy stationed at right and left wing-back respectively. Zouma, Terry and Ake formed the three-man defence.
  • Conte’s first change saw Ola Aina replace Kenedy in a straight swap. Shortly after, the Italian introduced Cesc Fabregas for Chalobah, offering a more attacking threat from the middle of the park, while Pedro joined Willian and Hazard in a fluent front three in place of Batshuayi for the final six minutes.
  • Conte unsurprisingly made wholesale changes for Monday’s match, but he could name a stronger starting XI when the champions pick up the Premier League trophy when they host Sunderland on Sunday. Costa and Pedro could return in attack, but after Hazard surprisingly played all 90 minutes against the Hornets, he may be in line for a rest, perhaps allowing Willian or Fabregas to start in the front three. Fabregas is also a viable starter in central midfield, as are Matic, Chalobah and Kante. Moses and Alonso could return in the wing-back spots, but Terry is likely to get another start in defence, so one of Azpilicueta, Cahill or Luiz may miss out. Courtois is another who could return, replacing Begovic in goal.

Current Status: Very Unsettled
Risk Areas: All Positions

Middlesbrough

Starting XI: Guzan; Fabio, Chambers, Gibson, Friend; Clayton; Bamford, Forshaw (Leadbitter 60), De Roon, Downing (Fischer 60); Negredo.

  • Interim head coach Steve Agnew only made one adjustment for the home encounter against Southampton, with Patrick Bamford starting in place of Adama Traore.
  • Bamford started on the right of what was an attacking midfield trio used by Agnew in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Adam Forshaw (No 10) and Stewart Downing (left) also operated behind lone striker Alvaro Negredo.
  • But after falling 2-0 behind, Agnew decided to bring on Grant Leadbitter and Viktor Fischer in place of Forshaw and Downing in a straight swap on the hour-mark.
  • After supplying the assist for Bamford’s first ever Premier League goal, Fischer could push for a start in place of Downing for Sunday’s trip to Liverpool. Leadbitter may also be recalled in place of Forshaw, while squad players such as Traore and Cristhian Stuani will hope to see some pitch-time.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Attacking Midfield, Left Wing

Southampton

Starting XI: Forster; Pied, Caceres, Yoshida, Bertrand; Clasie, Romeu; Long (Austin 87), Hojbjerg (Davis 74), Boufal (Redmond 46); Rodriguez

  • Saints boss Claude Puel made seven changes for the trip to Middlesbrough, with Jeremy Pied, Martin Caceres, Jordy Clasie, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Sofiane Boufal, Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long replacing Cedric Soares, Jack Stephens, Steven Davis, James Ward-Prowse, Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini.
  • Pied and Caceres slotted in at right-back and centre-back respectively, while Clasie and Hojbjerg operated just in front of holding midfield Oriol Romeu in the 4-3-3 formation. Long (right) and Boufal (left) flanked central striker Rodriguez.
  • Despite his side holding a 1-0 lead at the break, Puel decided to introduce Redmond in place of Boufal in a straight swap. With 16 minutes remaining, Davis was brought on for Hojbjerg in central midfield, while Charlie Austin returned from a long spell on the sidelines to replace Long for the final three minutes.
  • Saints now entertain Manchester United tomorrow night, with Crystal Palace the visitors to St Mary’s on the final day. Given the rotation seen at the Riverside, it’s probable that Puel will do likewise over the next two fixtures, with his first choice line-up reserved to start against Jose Mourinho’s men. The likes of Soares, Stephens, Davis, Tadic and Gabbiadini may all earn recalls then, but the wide positions are look more difficult to predict. Ward-Prowse and Redmond could come back into the side, although Boufal, Long and Rodriguez are also viable options. The Saints boss might field a side similar to the one seen against Middlesbrough on Sunday, with Pied, Caceres, Clasie, Hojbjerg, Long, Rodriguez and perhaps Austin all more likely to start. But equally, Puel could just mix and match over the next two matches, causing further frustration for the many Fantasy managers who own Saints assets.

Risk Areas: All Positions

Stoke City

Starting XI: Butland; Johnson, Shawcross, Martins Indi, Pieters; Whelan, Cameron, Allen (Crouch 60); Arnautovic (Ramadan Sobhi 81), Diouf (Berahino 61), Shaqiri.

  • Potters boss Mark Hughes made one change for the visit of Arsenal to the bet365 Stadium, with Erik Pieters recalled in place of Marc Muniesa.
  • Pieters returned in his usual position at left-back in the 4-2-3-1 system. Joe Allen was again used in the No 10 role, while Mame Biram Diouf was handed another chance to impress as the lone striker.
  • With his side trailing 2-0, Hughes decided to introduce Peter Crouch and Saido Berahino in place of Allen and Diouf on the hour mark in straight swaps. Marko Arnautovic had to be replaced late on after suffering an arm injury, Ramadan Sobhi taking over on the left wing for the final nine minutes.
  • Arnautovic will be assessed ahead of the final day trip to Southampton, with Sobhi set to be on standby to replace the Austrian. Crouch is likely to push for a start as the lone striker in place of Diouf after scoring a contentious goal from the bench, while Berahino offers an alternative to Allen, who could drop back into central midfield at the expense of either Glenn Whelan or Geoff Cameron. Muniesa may return to contention at left-back in place of Pieters, while the likes of Charlie Adam and Jonathan Walters may also push for starts if Hughes looks to freshen up his side following a flat display against the Gunners.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Left-Back, Central Midfield, Attacking Midfield, Left Wing, Lone Striker

Sunderland

Starting XI: Pickford; Jones, O’Shea, Kone, Manquillo; N’Dong, Denayer (Gibson 20), Larsson; Borini, Defoe, Anichebe (Khazri 37).

  • David Moyes was forced into making one change from the side that beat Hull City 2-0 for the home clash against Swansea City, Sebastian Larsson replacing the injured George Honeyman.
  • Larsson started on the left of a three-man midfield, with Fabio Borini (right) and Victor Anichebe (left) flanking central striker Jermain Defoe in attack in the 4-3-3 formation.
  • Moyes was forced into making two changes during the first-half. Jason Denayer had to be replaced by Darron Gibson after picking up a knock before Anichebe suffered a hamstring injury, the Nigerian making way for Wahbi Khazri in a straight swap.
  • Moyes revealed he expects Honeyman, Denayer and Anichebe to all miss tonight’s trip to Arsenal. There are also some other issues in the squad, so Gibson or Jack Rodwell could come into the midfield, while Khazri or Lynden Gooch may replace Anichebe. Bryan Oviedo was back on the bench last weekend following a spell on the sidelines, so he could be an option to replace Javier Manquillo at left-back, while Papy Djilobodji and Donald Love provide further alternatives in defence. Youngsters such as Joel Asoro, Elliot Embleton and Josh Maja may also feature against Arsenal and at Chelsea on the final day of the season.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Left-Back, Central Midfield, Left Wing

Swansea City

Starting XI: Fabianski; Naughton, Fernandez, Mawson, Olsson; Ki Sung-yeung (Fer 67), Britton (Cork 77), Carroll; Sigurdsson; Ayew, Llorente (Narsingh 88).

  • Head coach Paul Clement kept faith in the side that beat Everton 1-0 for the trip to Sunderland.
  • Clement rolled out the midfield diamond in the 4-1-2-1-2 formation once more, with Ki Sung-yeung keeping his place in the side ahead of both Leroy Fer and Jack Cork.
  • The South Korean midfielder was the first player to be replaced, Fer taking his place in a straight swap for the final 23 minutes. Cork was then called upon to provide fresh legs in the defensive midfield role, replacing Leon Britton, while Luciano Narsingh came on for Fernando Llorente late on, operating wide on the right. That saw Jordan Ayew end the match as the lone striker in a 4-5-1 system.
  • With another season in the Premier League now confirmed, Clement may decide to rest some players who have been playing with injuries for the final home clash against West Bromwich Albion. Ki suffered a slight knock at the Stadium of Light and could make way for Fer or Cork, while the likes of Stephen Kingsley, Angel Rangel, Narsingh, Wayne Routledge and Borja Baston provide further alternatives should the Swans boss look to rotate.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central Midfield

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Lloris; Trippier (Walker 82), Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Wanyama; Eriksen (Nkoudou 90), Alli, Son Heung-min (Dembele 71); Kane.

  • Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino only made one adjustment for the final match at White Hart Lane, with Kieran Trippier replacing Kyle Walker.
  • Trippier started in his usual position at right-back as Pochettino kept faith in the 4-2-3-1 formation. Mousa Dembele was only named among the substitutes once again though, with Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier favoured in central midfield.
  • Dembele was the first player summoned from the bench, coming on for Son with 19 minutes remaining as Spurs switched to more of a 4-3-2-1. The Belgian joined Wanyama and Dier in central midfield. Trippier was then forced off with a knock, seeing Walker take over at right-back. Georges-Kevin Nkoudou was handed a brief run-out late on in place of Christian Eriksen.
  • Trippier will be assessed ahead of Thursday night’s trip to Leicester City, but with Pochettino rotating his right-backs, it may in any case be Walker’s turn to start. Dembele could return at the base of midfield in place of either Wanyama or Dier, while squad players such as Vincent Janssen, Moussa Sissoko and Kevin Wimmer may be handed some minutes either against Leicester, or for the trip to Hull City on the final day of the season. Ben Davies looks certain of retaining his left-back role for the two remaining matches with Danny Rose ruled out of those encounters today following confirmation of surgery on his knee injury.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Full-Backs, Central Midfield

Watford

Starting XI: Gomes; Mariappa, Prodl, Holebas; Amrabat, Behrami, Doucoure, Cleverley, Janmaat; Capoue (Deeney 90); Niang (Okaka 71).

  • Head coach Walter Mazzarri made three changes for the trip to Stamford Bridge, with Nordin Amrabat, Tom Cleverley and M’Baye Niang starting at the expense of Troy Deeney, Stefano Okaka and the injured Christian Kabasele.
  • The Hornets lined up in more of a 3-4-2-1 formation in which Cleverley and Etienne Capoue operated in central advanced midfield positions behind lone striker Niang. Amrabat was stationed at right wing-back, with Janmaat on the opposite flank, leaving Jose Holebas in the back three alongside Sebastian Prodl and Adrian Mariappa.
  • With 20 minutes remaining, Mazzarri sent on Okaka in place of Niang in a straight swap. After falling 4-3 behind, the Watford boss threw on Deeney in place of Capoue as the visitors finished the match in a 3-5-2 system.
  • Kabasele is a major doubt for Sunday’s home clash against Manchester City so Mazzarri may have to stick with the same defence unless he hands a start to youngster Andrew Eleftheriou. Juan Zuniga provides an alternative in the wing-back positions, while Deeney and Okaka should come into contention for recalls in attack.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central Defence, Wing-Backs, Forwards

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Dawson, McAuley (Wilson 64), Evans, Nyom, Fletcher, Brunt, Livermore, Field (Yacob 51), McClean (Chadli 59), Rondon.

  • Baggies head coach Tony Pulis made one alteration from the side that drew 2-2 against Burnley for the home meeting against Chelsea as Allan Nyom started at the expense of Marc Wilson.
  • Nyom returned at left-back, while elsewhere Pulis opted for more of a 4-5-1 formation, with Darren Fletcher, Jake Livermore and Sam Field all keeping their places in central midfield.
  • Six minutes into the second-half, Pulis decided to bring on Claudio Yacob for Field, seeing the home side switch to a 4-1-4-1, with Yacob stationed as the defensive midfielder. Shortly afterwards, Nacer Chadli entered the fray in place of James McClean. The Belgian played on the right side of midfield, with Chris Brunt shifting over to the left flank. Pulis’ final substitution was an enforced one, Wilson having to come on in place of Gareth McAuley, who had picked up a knock. That change saw Nyom move to right-back and Craig Dawson to centre-back, leaving Wilson at left-back.
  • Pulis has revealed that Matt Phillips (hamstring) remains out for tonight’s trip to Manchester City, while McAuley is also likely to miss out. A late decision will be made on Hal Robson-Kanu (hamstring), but an appearance off the bench appears the best-case scenario, so Salomon Rondon should keep his place in attack. McAuley’s absence could see the Baggies boss start with the back four that finished the match against Chelsea, with Wilson coming in at left-back. Yacob and James Morrison provide different options in central midfield not just for the Etihad clash, but also the final day trip to Swansea City, while winger Jonathan Leko may see some minutes over the final two matches.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Defence, Central Midfield, Flanks

West Ham United

Starting XI: Adrian; Fonte (Fletcher 55), Reid, Collins; Byram, Fernandes, Nordtveit, Cresswell; Ayew (Snodgrass 77), Lanzini; Calleri (Feghouli 55).

  • Slaven Bilic was forced into making two changes from the team that beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 for the home clash against Liverpool, Edimilson Fernandes and Havard Nordtveit starting in place of the injured Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate.
  • Fernandes and Nordtveit formed the new-look central midfield partnership for the Hammers, while Andre Ayew and Manuel Lanzini continued in the attacking midfield positions behind lone striker Jonathan Calleri in the 3-4-2-1 formation.
  • With his side losing 1-0, Bilic decided to make a double substitution 10 minutes into the second-half, with Sofiane Feghouli and Ashley Fletcher replacing Jose Fonte and Calleri. Those changes saw West Ham switch to a 4-2-3-1. Feghouli operated on the right of the attacking midfield trio, leaving Ayew as the No 10 and Lanzini on the left behind lone striker Fletcher. Robert Snodgrass then replaced Ayew for the final 13 minutes.
  • Noble and Kouyate have undergone season-ending surgery, so Fernandes and Nordtveit may keep their starting berths for Sunday’s trip to Burnley. Bilic appears unlikely to risk Andy Carroll for the final match, so Calleri or Fletcher should start in attack. Feghouli and Snodgrass provide different options out wide if the Hammers boss wants to start with a 4-2-3-1 formation at Turf Moor. Angelo Ogbonna was back on the bench on Sunday, so he offers an alternative in central defence, but Arthur Masuaku (knock) is still a doubt, meaning Aaron Cresswell could well keep his place at left wing-back.

Looking at table, I only see 3 teams something to play for. Arsenal City Liverpool.

8-9 players from above and couple of other players like Kane Alonso.

Does "having something to play for" = "will get more FPL points"?

Does "not having anything to play for" = "will get 0 FPL points"?

Hint: the answer is the same for each, and is not "yes"

What are folks key lessons learned this season?

For me, my worst ever season, three big mistakes:

    1. Concentrating too much on earning value in the first half of the season. Combined with rapidly moving prices, it led to too many hits, and a few early hits when players then got injured later that week.

    2. Too much focus on fixtures. In second half of the season I concentrated on form. Up 1.2 million places (from a very low base).

    3. Getting captain wrong. I generally went with the captain poll, with not great success.

Any big lessons learned for you?

Lesson I learned this year is that one lucky captain punt can transform a season. I was going absolutely nowhere till GW16 when I took an Eriksen (C) punt. Started a run of 14 out of 15 green arrows. You have to I think play the percentages but if struggling look for that gold dust captain.

I disagree with 1, it is important to build up TV, that is how you manage to build a strong team in the second half of the season.
This year I had too many wrong captain choices for sure, very frustrating that led to many red arrows.
I feel I could have jumped on form players like Spurs defence, Allen, etc.
I got annoyed by selling players who were not performing who then fired up straight after (like Coutinho...). Patience in FPL is key...

I might well win my ML and should break top 15k (should! :)) having concentrated on TV for much of the season for the first time. It tends to correlate to team performance, but I still took too many hits this season.

There is nothing wrong in taking hits as long as the players you bring in score lots of points.
A hit is 50/50, either glory or failure.

Team value means nothing. Can you say high value teams with Hazard, Costa, KDB, Kane, Alli & Co doing better than other teams? The only reason managers hunts TV is for having a great team in DGWs. Points before value if you ask me.. 😉

Well expensive players are the ones that usually perform better like sanchez, kane, hazard...
You are right though, this year players like King, Defoe, Siggy, Son did very well and are much cheaper that the big guns

Disagree...If you look at the top players, their TV is around the 103-106 mark, which is average for serious players.

If you go for players who you believe will score points and they do, their value will rise naturally and your TV will take care of itself.

As someone who was forced to do this because of login errors prior to GW 1 I can tell you that this tactic does not work. Agreed using the results from the first week you can pick a more "form" team but look at it this way: all you need is 56 points in GW1 and you can make 15 transfers heading into GW2 and still have the same score as someone who skipped GW1 altogether. And if let's say 10 changes will do then you only need 36 points. Not worth skipping the game week altogether for that. Just tell yourself in going to give myself the license to take as many hits as needed in August so you don't regret a -40 in GW2 and a -20 in GW3 say.

        Try starting in GW21!

1053 points and still 4.1 mil. I am 15th of 36k from my GW, so really happy with that for my first season.

          1. Patience is important. No need to go over the top after a bad gameweek.
          2. Watching matches is helpful in forming a better idea.
          3. Belief in one's moves is key even if it is against the tide.
          4. There is no point in playing the game even if you are OR 1 if you are not enjoying it.
          5. These lessons are personal.

Defo 2 from this - so many times I have watched a game, come on here, and I'm astonished at the comments about such and such a player (I'm looking at you Firmino, when Sane was obviously the player running the show)....and once the consensus is formed that's it.

          1. Hits are okay imo. Not every week though. Once every 5gws at least is decent enough I reckon. Roll over FT is the key.
          2. I would agree on that if this was my first season.
          3. It's coin toss really. Form and fixture(in that order) would be the major factor.

The most painful was getting the wrong one from the team(I'm looking at you Stanislas).

+ on 3 is the ownership percentage.

          1. Fail to track/keep up all the price changes, resulting in a low team value towards EOS.

          2. Risk taker this season and didn't pan out as well as I'd expected.

          3. Use wildcard on a week that greatly benefits your team and that lets you score more points than a DGW will ever make. Proven from time to time, one or two of the DGW-ers are bound to fail.

Depends on price and position. He will most likely be a forward next year and almost certainly will cost £6.5+. I think he will still be useful as a 3rd forward though, Bournemouth score a lot of goals.

                1. Sterling is £11Mill..…

King will be like 8.5 mil and still a mid next season. Plus Bournemouth will sign a striker like Defoe probably and kings impact will be less

this is only my first season and the big lesson ive leaned is NOT to take punts with captains. the risk v reward is not worth imo as if the big gun delivers youll go up, but if he dosent wont change much. if the punt (c) dosent deliver, then youll shoot down! different aspect on just getting punty players and not captaining them

one thing i regret is not building my TV, as i was always 0.1/2 off my perfect wc

After three consecutive top 5k ranks previously, this is the first week I'm in the top 50k this season.

I feel like I should have a lot of lessons learnt, but I can't even point to what I got wrong consistently this season.

So the only lesson for me is to keep enjoying the randomness, it's only a game afterall.

Not sure if I will learn from it, but I make the same mistake every season - I wildcard my team around GW3-5. Hopefully I will stick to my guns a bit longer next season and trust in my original picks.

As a West Ham fan I would highlight the importance of captaining a player playing at the LS. The skillful ones (Cout, Sanchez, the entire Juve team) have destroyed us this year. There's a reason why Ronke bought Siggy in when Swansea came to town.

Have watched less football this year.

Haven't picked up the useful 9th/10th/11th player. Key players have performed but not got the "fillers" right. A lot relates to 1st point.

Same as last year don't pick or captain Kane until just after Xmas. 🙂

Stuck with the wrong keepers far too long (Foster in particular). It's not always stupid to take a hit for a keeper.

Don't be rigid on formation. Spent far too long chasing 3rd strikers rather than just going 3-5-2.

There are certain managers not to be trusted on injury news/player availability !!! Bilic, Pulis out front but Wenger, Klopp & Poch aren't far behind.

I'll be answering this on tonight's scoutcast - quite a few lessons learned. 😉

As a rule though it is worth bearing in mind that no two seasons are the same so for any lessons learned I try and ensure they are more general and can be applied across many seasons.

So for example early transfers worked well this season as many key targets didn't get injured early on ahead of midweek games. That has certainly not happened in previous years (eg Aguero post GWK 8 a while back)

Also going for or against form or fixture changes - some years players retain their consistency against the odds and defy fixtures- eg Ramsey and Yaya in their stellar year. Other years like this one premium players went off the boil quickly and lost form too quickly - eg Ibra early on and currently Hazard.

My one key rule learned is stick to your own game. If you try and be a sort of manager that you are ill suited to being then it will probably end in failure.

I worked out my average gwk score across the season and there was a massive improvement post xmas.

I've taken more hits than ever and have had my best season in 9 seasons...

You can't learn from this game cos it's different every season. Next year will not be the same as this year and you have to change tactics again. You Can't play a certain way you have to adapt over the season.

Too many gambles with captain and going for differentials early on put me way behind. Sensible picks and captains got me back on track with some hits here and there to make sure the team had more form players also helped

Yes, strategy and planning really can work.

          1. The value has again proved to be really important for me this season, playing out a cup final at the mo and my +5m value has made a big difference. That finance equates to less transfers required to get the right players in.

          2. Both are important.

          3. Captain poll is usually pretty decent as a guideline, there are times when there are clear leaders and it offers safe captains, and when there is more of a spread we get the opportunity to take a lower impact risk (which can pay dividends, see Eriksen GW31, King GW35).

          And,

          4. Sometimes going against the grain can work.

          5. The eye test is the best tool in the game.

Players like Sanchez (and to a lesser degree, Hazard) need to stay in my team for the entire season, its no good selling after a few blanks and getting back after a haul. Sanchez has ruined my season (unless he revives it tonight) – Sold before his big streak and got back in before his barren spell 🙁

Too much planning, everything changes so fast no more than a 3 week window for me next season.

Oh and going to take a punt on a cheaper option of 2 from the off next season then switch to a premium option when form is know. By making a team with 90m can easily pick up the big hitters

Really, this being HT'd as "lessons learnt" is an example of an increasing problem on this site. It just doesn't make sense. For me, I had a good season by focusing on earning value (early transfers), and generally going with the captain poll (the times I failed was when I punted on Siggy over poll leader Sanchez or Alonso over poll leader Kane). If there's any "lesson to be learnt", it's that you shouldn't make "lessons" based on _one_ sample -- your own team.

          - Play the WC the game before the DGW for the most up to date information
          - Most that say 'I made up 50 points with my early WC' didn't really achieve that, it feels like it but a few hits would have made it only 10 points better off
          - BB when your bench is the strongest irrespective of DGW
          - AOA is useless if you have cheap bench fodder, use it when you have injured/suspended defenders or GW38
          - Differentials are highly over rated
          - don't be stubborn holding players on bad runs
          - don't be stubborn by not buying cheap players on good runs
          - next season buy the attacking full backs or wing backs

If there is one thing I have learnt this season it is to just follow the FPL Show on the FPL website. Give excellent advice and basically can just do what they say and you will fly up the ranks. For example, they told you when to WC, play BB etc. They pick out the best differentials. They even came up with a template WC team for GW36 to follow.

          1) Use WC 1 in the international break (around GW3)
          2) Pick players that are nailed to start
          3) Do transfers early (especially in the first half of the season) to maximise value from price rises
          4) Building TV in the first half of the season reaps rewards for the second half of the season
          5) Don't skimp on the defenders
          6) Midfielders offer better value than forwards (but weigh up price at the beginning of the season in case FPL try to redress this balance)
          7) Use TC on a player in form with good fixtures and in a DGW
          8) Use WC 2 the week before a big DGW set of fixtures (e.g. GW36)
          9) Plan for the long term and don't go hit crazy (e.g. some of your players will be rested over the Christmas schedule)
          10) Pick players that are consistently playing OOP in more attacking roles than their FPL classification
          11) Cheap GKs who rotate well are good enablers
          12) Form is generally more important than fixtures
          13) Ownership is an important factor in who to buy or sell
          14) There is wisdom in the FPL crowd - look at who the most transferred in and transferred out players are each week

Played for a few years now and I try not to knee jerk too many learnings off one season. Football is still football and fpl is still fpl.

But also each season has subtle differences and the first to understand and apply them will get an advantage.

This season the 3-4-3 real football formation and to a lesser extent the false 9 have been the biggest tactical changes. The ones who got on a false 3-5-2 or even 3-4-1 early packed with wing backs and false 9s benefitted.

In previous seasons it's been fpl that has changed with subtle bps changes advantaging CBs 3 years ago and then passing midfielders 2 years ago. Last year I was much too slow to spot the weakness across the usual top 4 and suffered.

Next year something else subtle will change. Pay attention and understand the implications and whether it's likely to be sustainable.

This year faster price changes was definitely a trend. Whilst a consideration I don't think it changes my learnings from previous years which is to make sure you are happy you are making the right move to maximise points before doing it. Don't let prices or fpl bandwagons sway you from the course or make you rush when you are not sure. If you are sure an early transfer or 2 whilst risky will help you build value which you can turn into points if you use it well.

Guys , there is no rule in FPL which will work 100% at all times ..... It is hard work ( Following the game , seeing the game , making right moves ) + Luck to go hand in hand ...

Whether Luck will play major role or Hard work depends on every game week .

On a long run Hard Worked basics only will give hand .

          - One needs Decent TV built with careful points hit
          - Sensible & Risky Captain choices depending on the GWK .
          - Form nd fixture is both important when we say form we cant foooled to think sanchez will hit 2 goals with top 4 ....
          - dont underestimate anyone in your mini league ... things can change easily with a hat rick ... dont sit cooly if you are leading ....

Lastly , Game is not won in last 3 weeks , pls focus from GW1 ...If are you fighting in last 3 weeks then you made lot of mistakes..

          2. proportion between guts/risk & playing safe
          3. buy players not only for 1 GW only (DGW cases)
          4. do not overthinking/overplanning
          5. DGW players is a must, especially to a SGW's with early fixture.... gonna be a long week if they aren't deliver 🙁

My top 3 lessons from this season:

          1. Always go form over fixtures, King is a prime example
          2. Choose mostly highly owned players, with max of 3 differential
          3. Focus on team value in GW 1 - 19 and after that, do transfers in Friday to avoid injured players.

By following above rules, I am on top 2k and really hope to finish in top 1k... ^_^

        Bravo
        VVD - Rose - Coleman
        Mane - Antonio - Cazorla - Bolasie
        Ibra - C Wilson - Austin

Anyone I missed it looks a good affordable side bar the dodgy keeper...

Depends on the rest of your team. Like most I was a bit surprised he played. His recent form has been poor so it's not beyond the realms of possibility for him to be dropped. That's a massive call though. If he's your weakest link then I'd sell. I'm keeping myself

Other mids are Cout, Sanchez and King (Carroll Sub)

                  Strikers Costa Kane and Jesus.

I hope whoever massages Kos's achilles every day has done a great job, and he's now magically fit for tonight..

Already said he is targeting Everton and Cup Final - highly doubtful...

I'm just hopeful with Sanchez (C) that he is basically telling Wenger I want to play, as it seems madness to do so versus basically Pickford on his own.

With City + Arsenal still with something to play for, and Costa + Alonso rested last game do I need to change much for GW38?

          Thinking Hazard -> Coutinho possibly?

          Caballero
          Davies - Monreal - Alonso
          Sanchez - Ozil - Hazard - Sane
          Jesus - Costa - Gabbiandini

          Pickford - Yoshida - JWP - Holgate

          For next season :
Is it good to start season with only potential players with low ownership (not a big names) then WC around GW5 to maximize price rise and minimize price fall?

No no no. The excact opposite. Im going with 12/13 known Prem stars then getting in Newcastle keeper, Ritchie and one other punt

But if a big names doesnt performing well/getting injury, their price will fall to the earth with many of owner transfering their out.. i'm i wrong?

Cant see many a price drop with only one GW to go. If you had them you'd probably keep for CPL

I am in the wrong thread - Apols. You are correct with that however the same will apply with non starters which youre at risk of with low ownership players.

You could be way behind by GW5 if the highly owned players start well.

That would require a huge amount of luck to pan out.
Luck that your picks perform + luck that big hitters/safe options don't.

Look at the price change events in fplstats on the first 2GWs, big names like Ramsey Miki Fabregas Pedro Darmian is falling.. Only Coutinho rising.. Or are you guys have predict it before?

What do Ramsey, Mkhitaryan, Fabregas, Pedro and Darmian all have in common? None of them were nailed on at the start of the season. They weren't good picks so it's hardly a surprise that they did poorly at the start and fell in price. Rule number 1: get nailed on players.

Ignoring high ownership players is a big risk which I can attest to this season. Tried to be cheeky and went without Ibra at the start which hurt me badly.

I think it's easy to forget that differential picks are differential for a reason. Everybody-else has interpreted the same information and come to a contrary conclusion.

Nevertheless that can/does work occasionally. But everybody-else is not consistently more stupid. The probability of building an entire contrary squad that outperforms for one GW let alone for a consecutive few is tiny.

for me 3 to 5 differentials, 5 top guns , the rest is cheapie.... put around 3m itb for transfer flexibility

I see a lot transferring in Giroud. I was/am considering it too but he never does well when he starts. He has become a Dzeko-esque impact sub. I wonder if it is following a band wagon that has already left....

As you're probably aware Dzeko is bossing Serie A this season (27 league goals)

I had a standing bet every season with a Citeh supporting mate that Dzeko would score more league goals than Aguero

                (I only won it once)

He just scored a brace as a starter.

MUFC travelling squad vs Southampton: Romero, Pereira, O'Hara, Darmian, Tuanzebe, Bailly, Jones, Smalling, Mitchell, Carrick, Herrera, McTominay, Lingard, Fellaini, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Rooney, Martial, Rashford

So no Valencia as well then.

Valencia and DDG double up returns 2 points in a DGW. Ouch.

So my Blind -> Brunt for a hit might still pay off
