Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 6 – Sunday

A Tomer Hemed winner reminds us all of the delights of a budget third striker as Newcastle United’s well-owned goalkeeper and defenders fail to keep out Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s one and only match.

Hemed the hero, for now

The 2017/18 Fantasy Premier League season is in danger of leaving us dazed and confused before October has even had the chance to turn up.

We started the campaign looking at top-performing midfielders, just like last year, to lead the way.

Now we think premium-priced forwards are the way to go, with budget midfielders to provide ballast and some decent returns now and again.

But Sunday’s match between Brighton and Newcastle threw even that idea into question, as the Seagulls’ Tomer Hemed – an archetypal cheap third striker if ever there was one – delivered a nine-point performance to prove that fine hauls from forwards don’t always have to come with a budget-busting price tag attached.

Dale Stephens provided the assist for the Israeli, who has two goals and an assist from his last three starts, making the 2.8%-owned forward a tidy differential indeed.

He’s been involved in three of Brighton’s four home goals this season and is something of a talisman at the Amex – the Seagulls have won 13 and drawn one of the 14 matches in which he’s scored on home turf.

Indeed, going back further, Hemed has now been involved in 20 goals in his last 23 starts from Brighton at the Amex, producing 15 goals and five assists.

But the striker could go from hero to villain in a matter of days. Hemed was involved in an “incident” with Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin late on, which appeared to show the striker stamp on the Magpies defender.

Accidental or otherwise, the incident could be reviewed by the FA having been apparently missed by referee Andre Marriner.

Should the FA issue a retrospective charge of violent conduct, Hemed will face a three-match ban. That would rule him out of fixtures with Arsenal, Everton and West Ham United. We would hope to have confirmation in the next 24 hours, with Marriner’s report set to be processed today.

So far, only 13,000 have invested in Hemed following Sunday’s points, with a potential ban no doubt a factor in the lukewarm interest to this point.

Should he sit out the next three, Chris Hughton’s options in attack would be severely limited. Glenn Murray failed to make the squad on Sunday as he struggles for fitness, although Izzy Brown returned from injury to make the bench and could be an option. He is classed as a 5.3 FPL midfielder.

Brighton’s 1-0 win over Newcastle made it back-to-back victories at home and seven of their next eight matches on the south coast – EVE SOT STK CRY BUR WAT BOU – offer the potential for good returns from their defensive assets as well, with only a Gameweek 15 visit from Liverpool likely to be a step too far for a backline of players available at around the 4.5 mark.

They certainly have some previous for parsimony at home, albeit in the Championship, as they kept 12 clean sheets and conceded just 14 goals in 23 matches last term.

Newcastle huffed and puffed but couldn’t breakdown a resilient Brighton, which derailed a number of Gameweek 6 bandwagons.

Jamaal Lacelles (10.1%) ended up with one point after being yellow carded, while Matt Ritchie, Chancel Mbemba and Christian Atsu had earned a combined 783,000+ transfers-in for the Gameweek, only to sell their new owners short.

Even keeper Rob Elliot, a 23.8%-owned budget pick at 4.1, let us down, failing to claim a save point for only the second time this season, although he was also the most benched player (808,000) of Gameweek 6.

There should be better defensive days to come for the Geordies – of the 18 teams to have played six times, only the two Manchester clubs have allowed fewer shots in the box than Newcastle, even though they’ve kept just two clean sheets.

And Rafa Benitez’s men still have six decent matches in the next eight. A visit from Liverpool next week and a Gameweek 12 trip to Man United aside, Newcastle will face: sot CRY bur BOU wat WBA.

Is it a real possibility that Salah and Mkh leave our teams in GW8? Great servants so far, but we can't have them all. City and Chelsea assets calling!

Mendy to another City def is a non-sense.

He has a knock only, so don't sell him, I repeat: DON'T SELL HIM! Their fixtures after GW7 are pretty good. 🙂

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    4-3-3 v 3-4-3

Given another stellar showing from premium strikers a strong frontline is looking a must.

But - in light of many wildcards starting to flutter over the next international break - is the best way to accomodate them by opting for four at the back or sticking with a traditional four man midfield.

In essense many teams I've seen so far tend to come down to one key questions

Is it better to field a 5-7m midfielder or a 5-7m defender.

Looking at the options Ritchie looks a stand out pick among that 5-7m midfielder category. But are there any others. For those looking to field Ritchie anyway are there any other viable fourth midfielders in that price range?

Or is a double 4.5 pivot the better option and instead spend money on a strong 5-7m defender to field every week.

With Chelsea's fixtures picking up after City there could be merit in this and with Spurs, United, Southampton and City defenders all looking strong perhaps 4-3-3 is the best way to go.

What do you think? Tap into the points potential of wingbacks and reliable defenders....or try to find points in the , seemingly limited mid price midfield market?

I feel 4-3-3 is the way to go this season with not enough MFs to warrant attention and rather utilize the 1.5mn from say Ritchie to RLC/Carroll, to boost the defense.

I'm thinking that too - although it goes against all my instincts.

Sigh, time to adapt perhaps. There are just so many 5-7m defenders to choose from. Literally just Ritchie among mids.

the only bright light could be the price plummeting Zaha...but that's a long way off.

For me I'm looking at something like Morata Vardy and Kane. But I think that the 4-3-3 looks even better for those going for three 10m strikers.

Brady is a fantastic option, GroB also. Moting and Atsu aren't to be sniffed at either.

There are plenty of options that can compete with the wingbacks. I imagine there's someone out there with a back 4 of Aurier Davies Alonso Mendy returning a total of -1 pt this gw.

Definitely, just like many, goes against my natural grain of playing but seems to be getting some results. The only time I've "struggled" is when I've had to play 4 defenders lol

Came across this team too, and that's doing way better than my effort 🙂

Think 4-3-3 is the way forward, especially when you look at the fact that someone like silva has basically the same points as azpi and azpi is nearly 3 mill less.

However, with a heavy front line like kane aguero morata and 2 premium mids, I feel that the 4 at the back wouldn't be great due to a lack of budget

I WCed this week to 4-3-3. Hoping for 80+ points with Kola left to play. Mendy hurt a little but at least I'm happy with my team when I look at it now. 😉 You can always switch back to 3-4-3 when needed.

The problem with Ritchie is Shelvey.

Ritchie's threat is mainly from his dead-ball duties (which he is very good at) though he has been making some nice late runs into the box. Yesterday, just as we saw in the opening game against Spurs, Shelvey took a share of the set pieces while on the pitch. If Shelvey gets back in the first XI (which I can't see not happening) does this significantly diminish Ritchie's appeal and render him too expensive at 6.0?

this is a good point. However, it's important to note that Merino has been really excellent so far, and I think Hayden is important for his running and tackling (which neither Merino nor Shelvey excel at). So it's hard to see Shelvey replacing either of them immediately. That then means that for him to get back into the side, he'll either have to replace Perez or Rafa will change the system. If he replaces Perez, that means he's playing as a number 10 and actually becomes a better fantasy pick than Ritchie imo, but I also don't see this happening immediately. Very hard to predict.

      433
When priced similarly, defenders are nearly always better than mids. You will play a 4.5 defender in your first XI but not a midfielder. A 5.0 defender is mid-range while a 5.0 midfielder is still generally shit. A 6.0 defender is premium and - if a WB - also a midfielder with probably more attacking threat than a 6.0 from a bottom half team.

To fit in three expensive strikers, four at the back seems to be the most cost-effective way of doing it.

It is not as simple as just comparing a 5.7M with a 5.7M defender

the 433 has to pick 4 defenders from 5 each week, meaning really need 5 decent ones to cover worst fixtures

The 343 only has to play 3 from 5 so it is easier to avoid difficult fixtures

        1. Pochecinno
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Since at least three of the four defenders in a 433 are going to be premium anyway, you will play them every game regardless of fixtures. The fourth slot will either be another premium defender with the fifth being a 4.0, or two 4.5s to rotate for the fifth place. It's not so different to what one would do in a 343. Just one more premium defender.

Nice topic, ironically, Mark was mocked on the scoutcast for opting for two 4.5 mids but it seems this is crucial to maximise the points on the pitch in a 433.

Forward thinking which is why he's so good at this game.

If you recall he was mocked because he went for two 4.5 in a 3-3-3. 😉

The idea of two 4.5 is fine in fact its a great one....as long as you have the option to play four at the back. Without that you have to play one of Carroll or RLC or King or whoever every week....who as was pointed out you can't run from.

        What? NO!

He has a 4-3-3 but with a garbage defence. And to even afford a 5.5, he has to take a hit and re-arrange his budget allocation. The two 4.5 mids was the right idea but he screwed up his budget allocation.

        Forward thinking lol.

Sticking with the classic 3-4-3 with the option of 4-3-3 as I'm basically rotating Brady and Duffy.

I started the season with 4-3-3 with two 4.5 midfielders and was ranked 3.7 million so I went back to the norm and got 87 points this week and up the dizzy heights of 1.4 million.

I see the logic in investing in defence instead, but it also goes against me as a FPL player hoping for 5/6 clean sheets every week. It's boring.

Playing this for fun too remember 🙂

Just looks like this year we are having 2-3 mediocre midfielders and hoping for a goal/assist every 3 games and hopping everywhere looking for a new Mahrez/Zaha/King.

I don't think there's any reason to be rigid and stick to a formation, this is only happening when you max your funds out in one area.

A bit of balance allows you to move through formations depending on fixtures.

For example, I played a 433 with Hemed this week and scores 76 points which I think is ok while I benched Cedric.

Next week I'll bench Hemed and play Cedric and play 532.

Think if you find the right balance you can be flexible and rotate formations depending on how the fixture are because there's merit in doing that this year.

The game is evolving, evolve with it.

      Hi All,

A major determinant here is the amount/proportion of the budget benched. By this I am referring to 4.0 DFs as the lowest priced compared to 4.5 MFs.

I feel most comfortable when benching the lowest aggregate value possible.

This enforces in a way to opt for 3-man backline. (including at least 2 expensive wing backs and a 3rd slot rotated between 2 defenders (assuming my 5th defender is dead wood 4.0).

the overall amount spread onto your starting 11 can in this way be 0.5 -1.0 more.(if Mbemba holds his spot)

ofc with a trio of super heavy hitters, even with only 2 expensive wingbacks (alonso/kolasinac) will still lead to a "weak" midfield. currently my second highest midfielder is Ritchie along with brady, mooy and T.carroll.
the only other 4.5 mf is RLC who has a fixture list from hell and thus not an option atm.

4-3-3 over 3-4-3 is definitely working for me. I think Alonso (despite the blank) offers more than most of the 7.0 midfielders. Around the 6.0 you have the likes of Kolasinac and slightly cheaper Ben Davies, these guys offer more than the vast majority of the midfielders priced at this bracket with none of the midfielders offering the consistent returns we see from defenders. Cheaper still we have Phil Jones at 5.2 in defence but in the midfield category you are really reaching. Even at 4.5 in defence we see the likes of Lascelles, Mee and Lowe delivering points, in comparison the weeks I opted to play Tom Carroll in a 3-4-3 have been a wash out and RLC and Chalobah etc are yet to deliver any returns either. Limiting yourself to only a couple of premium assets in midfield which is all you need right now enables you to spend more on your back and front line which have been providing more consistent returns so far this season. Of course this could change completely if the likes of Hazard, Mane and Sanchez becoming fit and firing

I went with 5 at the back, playing 5-2-3 most weeks. Was a bit unlucky this week since Chelsea and City got a clean sheet but my picks (Alonso and Mendy) got 0 points. Will work in the long run in my opinion. Big 3 up top Kane, Kun, Lacazette, the latter for his fixtures and will probably swap for Morata in two GWs time. As for the mids, all of them are mid/low priced and I play the fixtures for them, instead of defenders. In fact yesterday I played Richarlison. Still a long way to go but will stick with 5-2-3 at least until December:

      Elliot / Krul
      Alonso / Kolasinac / Mendy / Davies / Cresswell
      Ritchie / Richarlison / Choupo-Moting / Gross / Carrick
      Kane / Kun / Lacazette

I'm currently finding it difficult to find a budget 4 man defence. Just not got the funds to even stretch to Ottamendi. I have Kane, Jesus (Morata after this week) and Vardy up top. Mkhitaryan, Eriksen and Salah in midfield. I have around. Unfortunately there isn't enough quality in defence around £5m to play 4 as I already own Jones and Davies

I'm rotating between the 2 formations so for example, this weekend I played 4 at the back with Mee and benched choupo-moting.

Most of the players in the top 100 now, won't be there by Jan and definitely not there by May.

A lot have used key chips and some have even used multiple. They have also had great luck with their captains choices.

I'm not sure they are a great barometer on what formation should be played. All it would take for the number one person in the top 100 to fall out of it at the moment is 30 points. That's less than you would get from picking the right captain every week.

4-3-3 for me. Probably the 1st time I've ever done it consistently through choice.
There are some decent cheap mids out there but generally in poor sides. Like Mark I'm a big fan of RLC and think he will get points but not consistently.
I'm not sure players like Grob are going to return enough points over a 5.6m defender.
Seeing a lot of sides sticking with 3-4-3 and playing Ritchie/Grob & another cheapie as 3rd / 4th mids.
Mind you I'm not 100% sold on these huge forward lines either.
This GW they've all returned something but seeing a lot of sides with them only beating the average score by 10-15 pts because the rest of the side aren't returning pts due to funds being tied up in front line.
Scanned through a lot of sides in top 100 or so this week which had scores of 80+ and very few had 3 premium strikers.

        4-3-3/5-2-3 for me.

I've had a 'mare of a GW with Alonso, Mendy and Bavies letting me down, but that was a freak and won't happen regularly. On the other hand you have to expect 5-6m midfielders to deliver 2 points often.

I'm still confident that relying on 4-5 big hitters at the back, which allows me 3 big ones up top with just one premium midfielder will see me good in the long run.

all i was doing was referencing the top 100 or so as where i looked at sides which had scored 80+ pts this GW. The key point was GW score rather the OR.
In a GW where most of the premium strikers have scored goals a lot of sides holding 3 of them haven't necessarily outscored sides with a different approach.

That might be more to do with the fact Kane who would be a popular captain and hasn't produced as well compared to Aguero, Morata & Lukaku. Do you include forward lines with Firminio as 3 premium strikers, because Firminio's form is low as well.

Okay, I posted this before and this has come up again. In this context, the formation is irrelevant.

I assume you're suggesting going with 3 premium strikers up front? If you do that, whether you have a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 you're only going to be able to afford 1 premium midfielder, 2 if you can really stretch it. So even if you have a 4-3-3, that third midfielder spot is 100% going to be someone around Ritchie's price range. So this is irrelevant lol.

Bottom line is, if you go big 3 up front, either your defence or your midfield or both are gonna be shit. You will still be able to only afford 1 wingback at best and the rest of your defenders will be cheapies. It's a fundamental mistake. It's poor value for money.

Theee big strikers is basically one extra striker (because most have two of them) V the rest of your team being very suspect, might get the odd big week out of it but you'll also have plenty of ropey ones if that one extra striker ever blanks.

Actually for me its about Vardy and others its with a third heavyweight striker....but I do think it applies as well to those going ultra rich up top.

Seen lots of teams with heavy frontlines, two good mids, a Ritchie and four excellent defenders. As Azpilicueta showed at the weekend defenders do get good hauls - he did that alot last season.

I think for those like me who are used to a certain way of spreading the budget this season may favour those who are willing to mix that up a bit.

Early days - but four at the back teams with a strong frontline are doing really well.

That is until Sanchez bangs in a brace tonight...and Hazard does the same against City as he did in this fixture last season.

"Seen lots of teams with heavy frontlines, two good mids, a Ritchie and four excellent defenders"

I highly doubt they had 4 excellent defenders with that setup.

For example, I have two 10m strikers, third is a bench fodder, three good mids and the other two 4.5s. And my best defenders are Kolasinac, Davies, Jones and Bertrand (Bertrand not great but can get a premium 5.5 replacement from City).

So if they have a heavy frontline, they've spent more than me in attack, so they should have a weaker defence than me, not stronger.

Have a look a my team... exactly what Jonty said bar Ritchie

            Goalies: Eliott 4.0
Def: Alonso Davies, Jones, Daniels Stones
            Mid: Eriksen-Mkhitaryan 5.6 5.5 4.5
            Attack: Vardy Kane Morata

I could even get a 0.5 more by downgrading Alonso to Azpi and get Ritchie in-

Does it look like a weak defense to you?

With Vardy/Firmino as the third striker you can. I meant with a 10m+ third striker, you cannot.

Hardly a premium defence either eh? You are basically looking at playing at least one weak player each week with that squad 3-2-3 or possibly a 4-2-3 when stones looks like he has a chance of a cs. Poor effort imo

I started the season with Kane, Lukaku and Jesus, had a strong defence but had to make sacrifices in midfield (Alli, Fabregas and
RLC) when 2 out of the 3 strikers blanked it left me very exposed, only Alli produced that week so opened up with a 57 score when others were hitting 70s and 80s, I've only now recovered from that.

Looked great on paper but the reality is that you are vulnerable.

Take last week for example, loads were talking up Ritchie and Atsu, they had a nice fixture against a team they finished above last year, both blanked, you just can't rely on the cheapies to be consistent to support a big attack, one less attacker upgrades two or three positions to make your side look a lot less vulnerable.

I think it's pretty safe to say 3 premium forwards is the way to go and all of them will cost you over 10m, which only allows you to have 3 premium midfielders. So 4-3-3 looks good.

However, the 5th player in mid/def is pretty much never going to make your team outside of a bench boost. If you play 3-4-3 then your 5th defender can be 4m, if you run 4-3-3 then your 5th midfielder is going to be 4.5m.

Also your not going to want to have players like Ritchie or Atsu, etc on the bench every week so your bench midfielders will need to be enablers like Carrol who's output is below their value at the moment. Going to 4 at the back means your bench will cost a fair bit more with little to no actually benefit over the season

I think either are viable at the moment, however as soon as better options become available in midfield then 3-4-3 will become the template again. Already players like Silva, Coutinho are starting add to the pool of midfielders as good options instead of De Bruyne, Eriksen, Alli & Salah which all cost over 9m.

I just don't see Alonso and Mendy (and probably Kolasinac - let's see tonight) as defenders! They play as attacking midfielders and score like attacking midfielders. With my 'back 5' Jones is arguably the only defender.

Formations played this game-week by the current top 20 in the Top 10k Any Season mini-league, which contains over a thousand teams:

      3-4-3: 10 times
      4-3-3: 5 times
      5-3-2: 3 times
      4-4-2: 1 time
      3-5-2: 1 time

These players have better track records over previous seasons than the current overall top hundred, and it appears to show that it is possible to score well with many different formations.

I was surprised that 5-2-3 does not appear in this list.

In the Top 1k ANY Season mini-league, the formations played by the current top 9 (who, like the Top 10k Any Season mini-league, all have at least 375 points so far, with one match still to be played) are:

        3-4-3: 6 times
        4-3-3: 1 time
        5-3-2: 1 time
        3-5-2: 1 time.

It would appear that the 3-4-3 formation is still doing well.

I think because a fair few goals have flown in for the last few weeks, everybody is getting carried away wanting a front three of all plus 10m. If you spend too much money up top you cannot afford a good enough defence to play 4 at the back and get consistently good points returns from the defence. My best PFL times have always come from balanced squads where I get decent returns even when goals aren't flying in. I know this is the old grey pants rather than the lingerie option, but it gets the job done all year round and not just during the good times.

3 heavyweights up top has never ever worked long term. And Ritchie is one of a glut of good 5-7m mids. No idea where people are getting this idea tha he is the only one. Let's not forget Richarlison amongst them.

Two heavies plus Vardy or Firmino, or even Wood.

      I'm either brave or stupid.

I've decided to go 3-4-3 with Alonso.

      Elliott/Krul
      Alonso/Cedric/Naughton/Wimmer/Long
      Mkhitaryan/Salah/Mahrez/Ritchie/Chalobah
      Vardy/Kane/Morata

My theory is that with Alonso 'playing as a mid' I am essentially playing 2-5-3. (that is if/when Alonso starts scoring well)

Ritchie has great fixtures and is looking the best performer in Newcastle's games win or lose.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 7

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 8:30am Wednesday and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 12noon by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Arsenal with a clean sheet today and Monreal scoring more than 6 points.
    It's possible, isn't it?

Looking ahead to gw8, early opinions please...

    A) Salah + Morata + Vardy + Coutinho
    B) Salah + Lukaku/Aguero + Morata + Ritchie/Stoke
    C) Hazard + Lukaku/Aguero + Vardy + Ritchie/Stoke

I could of course have any cheaper combination of the above and have cash for defence.
