The Community Round Up

As with last week, Wildcarders have once again hogged the limelight amongst the community chatter as they worked to finalise their revamped squads.

Our Hot Topic posters are full of eleventh-hour tips, although according to one of our community writers, those deploying this chip may be better off sitting on their hands.

Elsewhere, our scribes also investigate the most creative players, while our community discussions chew over other issues, including the best Chelsea options, bonus points stars and the origins of the Fantasy Premier League.

There’s further analysis of Antonio Conte’s assets in our Members tables round-up, while we finish off by showcasing a couple of community competitions that have been overlooked to this point.

The Community Articles

Stilicho has decided to take it easy this season in FPL by setting up a “ghost ship” team based around a power-five defence, which will sail through the 2017/18 fixture list without a single transfer or line-up change.

The community article on his (lack of) endeavours shows that he’s faring very well indeed and is even on course to top the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league, which he joined ahead of Gameweek 8.

Double Gameweek fever is taking Norwegian top flight game Fantasy Eliteserien by storm this week with Niemi on hand to run the rule over the best options.

Football’s chief creators are the focus of André94PT’s Members exclusive community article as he looks at a range of measures to discover more on these maestros.

Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas are among such players who are backed for success in Gameweek 8 in Hutch_Jameslatest canvassing of the crowd.

Meanwhile, Top Marx has been voted by you as the favourite community writer for the month of September. His latest article plotting the progress of the Hall of Fame top five can be found here.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topic

Wildcarders are making the final tweaks to their overhauled squads tonight but, with so many expensive options across all positions, Legomane asked those deploying this chip ahead of Gameweek 8 what sacrifices they are making.

We have also helped out with a rate my Wildcard team Hot Topic for those seeking and willing to give last minute advice.

As Sully 29’s discussion on this chip points out, there are still a number of big decisions remaining, including how we configure our strikers.

Manchester City’s options are the main concerns. Earlier this week, Ktk_Interista considered whether Gabriel Jesus is worth acquiring in the light of Sergio Aguero’s speedy recovery from a rib injury. Spartac Mac also takes a look at the Brazilian and how he compares with his team-mates for points potential.

Our discussion on forward line strategy also shows that there is still no consensus on how many heavy-hitters to field up front, let alone which attackers warrant selection.

For those considering transferring in Jamie Vardy, the Leicester striker’s aerial threat could prove pivotal, says our hot topic on the best headers of the ball.

The Foxes frontman is among this week’s most popular players in FPL’s transfer market, claiming more than 225,000 new owners. But being the latest bandwagon has not proved a guarantee of success, according to Page 302‘s ”beat the knee-jerkers” update, which looks at the performance of a team he is compiling each week based on the most popular transfers.

Among the latest flops in this series is Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata, who following a double-digit haul in Gameweek 6, lasted just 34 minutes due to injury last time out to return just a single point.

His likely absence this weekend could see Blues midfielder Eden Hazard fielded in an advanced attacking role, which is among a number of reasons we give on why the Belgian should be a target.

However, Kysersosa’s analysis of his toils on the road may put some off, especially as he has four away days in his next six.

Other Blues options worth considering are Cesc Fabregas and Cesar Azpiliceuta, who both feature prominently in our look at FPL’s baseline bonus point stars, which is calculated by stripping out goals and assist points. Ludo added to this topic later in the week by analysing why forwards tend to do so badly using this measure.

While Chelsea’s fixtures look far brighter from this weekend, Manchester United’s worsen. This prompted Cheese to wonder whether it is worth hanging on to Red Devils defenders over the coming Gameweeks.

Finally, Skooldaze dusted off his time machine to take us back to the origins of FPL, when a budget teenage striker by the name of Wayne was among the emerging bandwagons.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

The best Chelsea defenders are the subject of FPL Virgin’s most recent table, while FPL Shotlas has been focusing on cheap midfielders.

Elsewhere the latest baseline bonus points stars are revealed in my bonus magnets table and I’ve also taken a look at Manchester City’s key players, in particular their sharpest shooters.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

With no Premier League action last weekend we thought we’d provide an update on a couple of community tournaments that we haven’t covered for a while.

The Ironman leagues have been created by Teddy to cover a range of Fantasy formats and currently PDM is the man to beat, as he is currently top of both the FPL and FPL draft leagues. Elsewhere in the competition, I’m top of the Ironman Dugout draft contest.

PDM also tops the FFS Old Farts Club, which has been set up for our community’s oldest and wisest members.

Meanwhile, this weekend sees the second set of matches in the Community Watch tournament, according to Dreamslatest update from on behalf of the organising committee.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Hard to be more specific without free transfers and money in the bank, but I don't see anything that needs changing. Gross in time, but the alternatives (Richarlison and Choupo-Moting) have bad fixtures.

This is a cracking Alonso team. Prefer Silva over Vardy but that's personal preference. Can use Hemed as 3rd striker instead of a 4.5m mid.

Bench order currently Ayew, Lascelles, Mbemba. Correct? Or would you have Lascelles first?

Likely to be needed in case Ramsey misses out, or other unexpected surprises.

Already playing Elliot. I'm normally not keen on double-ups.

Playing defenders are Kolasinac, Davies, Martina so he might be needed regardless anyway. You reckon definitely ahead of Ayew though?

I'd reckon ahead of Martina, double up or not, but it's your call.

What is Ayew's points ceiling? And look at Lascelles' points ceiling.

    A)Simpson + Silva + Eriksen + Choupo (allows me a more flexible 4-3-3/3-4-3)

Who here is starting Carroll over Jones? Is this the week he finally grabs an apple?

    1. TallestJohn

Dunno what to do with Carroll, he's still my 4.5m mid on a wildcard because good fixtures but once I realised he was still in my XI I took him out for Lanzini and he went straight to third on my bench 😀

    2. fedolefan
      • 10 Years

I'm tempted to start Phillips over Jones and leave Carroll on the bench. Fancy Liverpool to win 2-1. Not convinced the United defense is as good as the cleans they are putting up. Remember watching the Palace game and thinking Palace are going to score..lol.

Would you start Monreal over Jones, Fedolefan? I'm currently on Jones as I don't see Arsenal keeping it clean, but I could be swayed.

        1. fedolefan
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

I'd start Monreal over Jones. He can fluke a goal or assist, has the same baps potential as Jones and you could say the chances of a clean sheet are about equal too.

I'm also kinda hoping the double United defense owners split the United assets and bench one, so that the damage is not too much in case you get it wrong. Decent time to bet against imo.

Thanks. That's fair. I'm probably reluctant to start Monreal because I brought in Richarlison for Carroll this week, and am starting him. So that (admittedly biased) part of my brain can't reconcile my confidence in playing Richarlison with also starting Monreal. It's food for thought, though. And I guess if I start both of them I'm at least hedging my bet.

            1. fedolefan
              • 10 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, true. Have hedges all over the park this week and they can be so annoying. Salah-Jones or Phillips-Maguire. So, I've got to pick between hedges..lol. That's even worse. That MNF game is making me want to pick Phillips since Maguire doesn't really need a clean to get points. He's well capable of assists/goals and bonus without them. Not sure Jones gets anything if Pool sneak in a goal.

Downgrade Silva to Sterling. Azpilicueta is a great pick but if you need funds maybe go Luiz, Davies or Otamendi.

  16. TallestJohn

    Wildcard team:

    Fabianski
    Davies, Azpilicueta, Otamendi, Ward
    Silva, Ramsey, Lanzini
    Jesus, Kane, Vardy

    Elliot, Gross, Lascelles, Carroll

    £0.7m in the bank.

Ramsey and Lanzini the questionable spots. Think it's too late and expensive for Hazard now but I'd prefer Morata anyway.

Would prefer Sterling to Ramsey but already 3 City, just think Otamendi is a good long term pick (this whole team is vaguely planned to be decent until GW22 lol)

    1. Pierce34

That midfield is very punty to say the least! But it would be boring if everyone was to go template, if you're confident in Lanzini's fitness and minutes I don't see anything wrong with it.

Jesus can become Morata soon and that opens up another City slot potentially.

      1. TallestJohn

Yep, Jesus to Morata is the plan.

Didn't even consider Lanzini until tonight but apparently he's ready and only 0.6% owned. Not enthused by Richarlison and want to see a bit more from Choupo-Moting.

Ramsey's probably staying in for the next 3 weeks, I think we'll need his attacking drive.

I don't think he offers great value, and I don't think he's as nailed on as people make him out to be. 2 goals and 2 assists is the most he's ever contributed to in the league. It's better to splash out the cash for Azpi or Alonso.

      Good midfield.

If you had to choose one:

    i) Salah or Coutinho
    ii) Pope or Fabianski
    iii) Mee or Ward

          Yup, they look really solid

if you wanna spread then go Fabs(but he's 4.6)

      Stones + Ward (10.1) or Monreal + Ward (10.0). I have all 3 🙂

I am not keen on Ward with upcoming fixtures. Don't think he will keep a CS.

At 5.5m and below Consider Soton (for the next 4 games), Fernandez from Swansea, Burnley guys. Maybe Lascelles.

Are we talking USD or AUD? The exchange rate between the USD and GBP is currently sitting at around 0.75 to 1. So for 10 USD your looking at £7.5 to spend on 2 defenders. I'd say Mbemba is a certainty anyway

    Fabianski, 3.9
    Alonso, Jones, Ward, Dunk, Rangel
    Hazard, Coutinho, Richarlison, Choupo, McArthur
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

    How is that look?

Decent team but you can't leave yourself with no bench. I'd rather Elliot 3.9 and upgrade Rangel to a 4.5m def if you are risking going with one keeper anyway.

        Dunk on the bench 🙂
But thinking Elliot + 3.9 gives me Dunk and Mbemba/Mariappa and Tephens in McArthur place. Better?

Or 4.3 as my 5th mid and Mariappa/mbemba as 5th def

I was hoping Fabs to Elliott would get you 0.4 for Rangel to Wimmer, but Rangel is 3.9. I think even Martina at 4.3m is better than Rangel. Mbemba/Mariappa are decent but who knows how long they'll play. Think Martina is more nailed.

Not feeling optimistic about the Liverpool Man Utd game tbh. But i feel i have the 2 best options for attacking returns in Salah and Lukaku! I think if i was offered 9 points between the 2 right now, i'd take it. Maybe even 8. A drab 0-0 would be no good

    Morata to:
    A) Vardy (-4)
    B) Jesus (-4)
    C) Hold and play Carroll

I'd say good chance of either Jesus or Vardy to outscore Carroll by more than 4. Not sure between the two though.

Azpi is the better pick so it just comes down to what you're doing with the spare change. I just upgraded Luiz to Azpi with my contingency money as I'm worried about his gametime and Azpi more likely to get bonus/attacking returns in my view.

Any last words of wisdom for me, gents? On WC

    Fabianski / Elliot
    Davies / Luiz / Monreal / Lowton / (Jones)
    Hazard / Silva / Sterling / Richarlison / (Loftus-Cheek)
    Kane / Jesus / (Ladapo)

already tripled on city plus got Monreal at 5.4, but yeah I've been juggling Otamendi in and out of there all week! Gonna have to just swallow city's clean sheet's I think. Thanks.

Kind of stuck now but is this ok to run with on the WC

    Fabianski
    Jones, Cedric, Davies, Ward
    Ali, Sterling, Coutinho
    Vardy, Lukaku, Kane

Yeah that works. What's your bench? I think I would look to get at least one Chelsea in there before long though. Alli out after this week maybe? Vardy/Lukaku downgrade and Alli to Hazard? Looks fine though, especially for this week.

Gross, just. Bit more danger of rotation for Choupo-Moting.
