Community Round-up: Planning for World Cup Fantasy knockout rounds

The World Cup continues to dominate the Fantasy Football Scout Community as the Group Stages end and we head into the knockout rounds.

Strategies for dealing with elimination from World Cup Fantasy Round of 16 onwards have been discussed in our Hot Topics, while some of you were able to avoid the frustrating rotation in Round 3 with some smart thinking.

We’ve got more tables to bring you to help plan for the next round of the World Cup, and we’ve got an update from our array of community competitions.

The Hottest Topics

Not surprisingly, one of our earliest Hot Topics this week warned us of heavy rotation in Gameround 3 of World Cup Fantasy – which is exactly what we got in the end. In an attempt to pre-empt the inevitable changes to starting line-ups, Siva Mohan presented us with a list of players walking the suspension tightrope. Both of those subjects shaped the discussion on chip strategy for the round too.

The assist policy on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy game was a much debated subject this week, as it differs considerably to what we’re used to with FPL. Legomane went over the goals scored in Uruguay’s 3-0 win over Russia to find out what you think of the two systems.

With team selection for the Last 16 opening up on McDonald’s game much was made of the price changes. 420king went over how they were caluclated while we asked how much money Fantasy managers had gained from the various increases throughout the game.

As the knockout stages are upon us, strategies to navigate the potential minefield of losing Fantasy assets to elimination were an important talking point. The deployment of chips formed a big part of that discussion, while captain tactics were too.

Amid all the World Cup action, we must not forget about Eliteserien. Legomane asked the community this week what their plans were for Gameweek 14 – this is what they said. Later on we asked you how you were hoping to handle Gameweek 15.

We have been also discussing the World Cup aside from Fantasy concerns. VAR has been a big talking point, with ZoumasBloomers starting a discussion about the benefits of the new technology. Meanwhile, we asked you to tell us your favourite World Cup moments so far and to make some predictions – this is what you said.

Community Tables

Those who are completely overhauling their World Cup Fantasy squads for the Round of 16 are in luck once again, as J0E has created two more very helpful tables and there’s Warwick’s Table as well.

The first one, entitled World Cup Sharp Shooters, sorts players by various aspects of their goal threat, suggesting that several premium forwards may be required in our squads for the knockout stages.

How profligate Germany were in their three Group F matches is highlighted in more detail in J0E’s other table, World Cup Chancers. This compares players on their chances of assisting and, aside from pointing out the Germans’ problems, demonstrates how dangerous Brazil will be in the latter stages of the World Cup.

Elsewhere, Warwick’s Table has been assessing the potential shown by players in Russia this summer.

Community Tournaments

With the World Cup Group Stages completed we’ve had time to have look at how our two McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy mini-leagues are getting on.

Niemi is currently leading the way in the Mods and Cons mini-league but has fierce competition elsewhere in the top five:

  1. Niemi (186 points)
  2. Legomane (183 points)
  3. Mat Williams (182 points)
  4. Gregor (174 points)
  5. David Munday (167 points)

As for our public league, there are some excellent scores in our top five:

  1. Hurrikane (220 points)
  2. Pascalevans (218 points)
  3. Eunuch999 (214 points)
  4. Tommobhoy (211 points)
  5. Kudin_88 (210 points)
  6. Lincon316 (210 points)

Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, threw up some rather interesting alternative World Cup results as the Group Stages ended. Find the latest update HERE.

Congratulations to Thes7s who was the clear winner of Jarvish‘s World Cup themed Yes/No game, with a score of seven. Beginning the game by only getting one of the first four questions correct, Thes7s successfully answered the final six in a row to become the champion.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Midfield is weak. I would downgrade defense:

      Miranda
      Trippier
      Carvajal
      Strinic

All more affordable options and then upgrade mids

It’s is a little , I’m thinking the games might be a tighter now so a defender clean sheet and goal could make up ground , especially as all the mids are covered and a bit samey

Modric seems to be an A-class template pick.
Pens, a locker full of worldies...

But is Rakatic worthy of consideration?

He's had almost double the number of goal attempts, in considerably less minutes, and is creating chances at a faster rate too...thoughts?

Modric was in to start with. They're both super players..I'll need to weigh up the value of pens. No doubt Modric is more involved as a whole though, but Rak seems to be out starting him at the top of the pitch.

Good differential if you need the money.
Another good differential would be Perisic if you are willing to give him a forward spot.

Perisic was the first Croatian player I price checked when the game opened, was gutted to see he's been classified up. Don't think there's anyway I can go there unless they make the latter stages.

      Pick Lukaku.

He's a striker. Look at the goals ratio especially for Belgium between Hazard and Lukaku. Add on the fact he's a big physical presence vs a smaller Japan side. It's not that close. Lukaku has to be the better option on paper. The more interesting argument is whether you get both...

But look at belgiums attack! Hazard surely should be involved in most of their goals, whether getting one or assisting. And remember, a goal for a forward is 4 points, assists are 3 points. Not much of a difference there and hazard has potential for both where lukaku is just an all out striker with shoot on his mind. I see more return from hazard tbh

I don’t think so. If everyone is correct here in picking the round of 16 winners, which most are, you get 5 FT’s before the semis. That’s plenty. So 1 will be for a goalkeeper only and just plan on using 1 FT every round for 1 goalie leaving the Fodder alone.

Everyone likes 2. It makes sense. But 1 does a few things that I really like.

        - Kane is a day 4 captain which I don't have
        - Rakitic is a neat little differential and nice underlying stats (freekicks too)
        - Prevents me overloading on Brazil for the QFs.
        - Meunier clearly a better/more secure pick than Pavard.

If both England and Brazil go through, I would rather have Kane vs SUI or SWE over Neymar vs BEL.

Final draft. I’m pretty happy with this. Anyone see something wrong with it?

0.3m ITB. Anywhere to spend it?

    Muslera, Mvogo
    Granqvist, Pique, Strinic, Miranda, Trippier
    Rakitic, Isco(c2), Coutinho, Carassco, Inui
    Griezmann(c1), Suarez, Hazard(c3)

          In order of dislikes:

          - Carrasco wingback for 6.5 down as a MID with Munier DEF for 6.0
          - Muslera tough fixture with no backup GK
          - Rakitic over Modric
          - Inui cheap although tough fixtures and likely to be eliminated

            • 5 Years

Carassco and Inui over Claesson and Quintero because it’s guaranteed only 1 FT instead of possibly 2. Also Carassco looked pretty eager to net one during game 2. I think he is more of an attacking threat than any other mid at that price range.

Rakitic for differential and because funds.

Muslera for saves and possible penalty save. Not banking on a clean sheet.

Btw I have no problem with Muslera (he is in my team too). Just wouldn't go with a non-playing backup unless I had an almost guaranteed CS.

Any criticism? I know Nandez is a gamble, but Inui is a guaranteed transfer and I think Uruguay stick to the system from the Russia game:

    Muslera, Mvogo
    Miranda, Carvajal, TobyA, Lovren, Granqvist
    Modric, Coutinho, Isco, Carrasco, Nandez
    Kane, Lukaku, Costa

Very similar to my team. I like it. Prefer Strinic (full back) over Lovren (center back) at same price tag. Also what about Kane to Suarez to free up 0.6m and have a good captaincy choice for day 1. Then upgrade Nandez to Quintero

      I think it's solid mate.

Only thing is I'd be a bit worried about having 3 Swedish players. I personally think they'll get through but that games looks as 50/50 as it gets. Could potentially lose 3 players in one game.

        Subasic, Muslera
        Granqvist, Carvajal, Strinic, Maguire, Pavard
