Best Spurs players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

2017/18 was a season of mixed fortunes for Fantasy owners of Tottenham Hotspur players.

Harry Kane matched his best-ever single-season haul for league goals (technically beating it after the Premier League goals accreditation panel retrospectively awarded him Christian Eriksen’s strike in the 2-1 win over Stoke City), but will also be remembered for frustrating blanks in home matches against Swansea City, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, West Ham United and Huddersfield Town. A fair share of Fantasy Premier League managers will, meanwhile, still be ruing their “Kanexit” strategy in December when the England striker punished his deserting owners with back-to-back hat-tricks.

Christian Eriksen‘s total of 11 strikes (one subsequently scratched) was his best goal haul in a Premier League season, but the Danish international recorded only half of the assists (ten) he had managed in 2016/17.

Dele Alli scored 50 fewer FPL points in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous campaign, with his goal tally (nine) exactly halved. Even Son Heung-min‘s goal (12) and assist (eight) returns, as impressive as they were, were down on 2016/17.

Spurs’ wing-backs, most notably Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier, coupled their clean sheet prospects with regular attacking returns but were at the mercy of Mauricio Pochettino’s irksome rotation policy on the flanks; not one of the Lilywhites’ four full-backs started more than 26 league matches in 2017/18.

The north London club are, at least, a comfortingly unchanging presence amid this summer of big-money moves and new manager recruitment. At the time of writing, Spurs were one of only two Premier League clubs – the other being Burnley – who have yet to sign a player during the current transfer window.

Pochettino will be taking charge of Spurs for the fifth successive season, meanwhile, and we can expect the same brand of quick-pressing, attacking football he has cultivated in his four years at White Hart Lane. Although Pochettino occasionally rolled out a three-man backline in 2017/18, we will inevitably see more of the Argentinean coach’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system again this season.

In-depth data on Spurs’ season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

If you ignore players I’m looking for advice on my team value changes.

I’m trying to limit the chances of a team member dropping 0.1 in value as in the first few weeks that’s the same as losing .05 mil.

Does anyone have any tips on how to reduce your exposure to a player that might drop in value other than don’t pick a bad player?

Is it better to have a player with in lots of other teams or in less teams?

Watch out for 4.0 popular picks (high ownership) that are dubious starters.
Trigger fingers mean they may drop week 1.
Having said that, it’ll all depend on the algorithm the powers use!!!

That only applies once the season starts, he’s looking for a strategy to set up his initial team with the minimum risk of a price drop.

    3. firetog
      • 7 Years

I could be wrong but I thought the algorithm for price drops was based on net percentage of change in ownership, so it shouldn’t matter whether they are highly owned or not. Price rises however, were based on net actual increases not percentage. Someone please correct me if this is inaccurate.

High ownership players (popular with casuals) who don't start will drop like a stone. So pick low ownership players who start.

Taken quite a bit of advice on here and here's the final draft....to play either a 442 or 343 (or even 433)

    Fabianski (Stekelenburg)
    Robinson, Otamendi, Davies, Tomkins (Peltier)
Salah, Gross, Mahrez, Jorginho (bit of a punt) (Stephens)
    Firmino, Aubameyang, Jiminez

I quite like it. I think Mahrez will be hit early doors and could swap out for Silva.

    Any thoughts

Jorginho is likely to drop very deep as Chelsea attack, almost becoming a CB as full-backs advance.

    Firmino or Mane ?

One of my favourite FPL players I have had Bobby in my draft team for a while now but read today that he's not back in training yet and Mane is so thought i'd compare how they did last year as they are the same price this year at £9.5m

Bobby played 37 games last year and Mane 29 games and so adjusting Bobby's stats down by 29/37 gives following like for like comparisons:

Goals 10 each (adjusting out Bobby's 1 pen as Salah takes em now)

    Assists Mane - 7 Bobby - 5

    Shots Mane - 70 Bobby - 65

Shots on Target Mane - 26 Bobby 29

    BPS Mane - 206 Bobby 237

Had always thought Bobby had the edge with bonus points but actually Mane's points per match is slightly better and i think this year at same price Mane a better option with the extra points for goals and cleansheets

My Liverpool three may well be Robbo, Salah and Mane and i'll switch my 4.5m mid to a 4.5m fwd instead and go 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 each week.

Anyone else thinking the same ?

Mane is the better pick imo but you'll struggle to find a better striker under 11m than Firmino

Agreed but think i'm starting with just Kun and Arnie up front allows me Salah, Sane, Mane & Rich in mid and Robbo, Mendy & Coleman at the back

Added that Bobby played 2760 minutes and Mané only 2189 yet Mané still had more shots. And he's a mid. Pretty clear for me. The only reason I'd go Firmino is that he offers better balance in attack

The issue with comparing players on a number of matches basis is that it assumes they will play the same number of matches. You need to take into account the reason Mane played less games. Was he injured or rested. If rested then is that likely to happen again this season, if so you need to adjust the parameters to take that into account.

With the Douglas news freeing up a Wolves slot, I'm tempted to do the following:

    OUT: Jota and Chalobah
IN: Costa and Neves (4th and 5th midfielder) + 1m

Any thoughts? I know the general consensus is that Neves is too defensive but am wondering whether Moutinho will allow Neves to get forward a little more. And Neves should be on even more set-pieces. The new Mili?

Schlupp playing on the wing, Cedric potential for attacking threat. When Huddersfield signed Kongolo on loan in Jan last season and they switched to 5 at the back they tightened up at the back and Lossl/Schindler got lots of bonus points. They've now signed Kongolo permanently. Don't think it is as bad as it looks.

Nice strategy but one I am never brave enough to go through with. I would prefer to have at least one top price forward just in case one of Kane/Aguero/Auba bangs in back to back hat-tricks and you're pretty much forced to get on that train.

I can't see them being horrendous, that's the difference. I was asking if he was the main man at Leicester.

Every other team except City, Liverpool, United, Spurs and maybe Arsenal could be horrendous this season.

Kiko Fermenia could be a great option at 4.5M, but I'd have a decent bench as he is far from immune to rotation.

Sturridge could be in line to start the Premier League campaign at home to West Ham in just over a fortnight’s time with Roberto Firmino – along with new goalkeeper and fellow Brazil international Alisson – rejoining the squad only at next week’s training camp in France.

    thoughts on this draft?

    4.5 - 4.0
    Robertson - Coleman - PVA - Douglas - 4.0
    Salah - Pogba - Richarlison - Jota - Ward
    Aguero - Firmino - Wood

the main uncertainity is Pogba starting GW 1 and maybe GW 2, but in general I think he’ll be a great value at 8m this year.

Lots of people ignoring Chambers/Mavropanos. Irregardless of fixtures, both are very cheap and as an Arsenal fan I expect one to be in Arsenal's starting 11, most likely Chambers who will be a real bargain at 4.5. Let me also point out that he signed a new contract a few weeks ago, highlighting how much faith Emery has in him. He will be on my bench for the first two games as I expect his price to increase dramatically and I already have too many transfers planned

I don't see any clean sheets vs MCI or CHE, so don't expect his price to increase before gw3.

    4 4 2

    Ederson
    Azpilicueta Robertson Mee Cedric
    Salah Mahrez Mililojevic Richarlison
    Aguero Firmino

Fodder... finding it very difficult to pick a team this year. Salah's price is destroying my team.

Palace had an unusually high number of pens last season, unlikely that can replicate that. Other than pens Milli doesnt offer much in the way of attacking returns.

I agree Mili is the only one I don't like.
Isn't he on pens for palace from memory. I feel like his points last season for his price aren't bad. Palace also have good fixtures

How about Eriksen to Groß/Mhki and Kamara to Zaha/Tosun?

Very nice. I personally prefer Schlupp over Tomkins, not convinced by Doherty and don't think Coleman is good value compared to the other 5.5 defs available.

I think he could do very well this season. He'll play in an advanced midfield position and has a good record for both goals and assists at his previous clubs.
