Arnautovic scores again as Pochettino faces midfield headache

Marko Arnautovic was on the scoresheet for the fourth match in a row as he continued as the spearhead in the West Ham attack, while Diogo Jota demonstrated his eye for goal with a strike in Wolves’ 2-1 defeat at Derby County.

Christian Eriksen was given another start in Tottenham Hotspur’s encounter with Barcelona in Los Angeles, while Southampton kept their first clean sheet of pre-season in a 2-0 win over Dijon.

Newcastle United produced a backs-to-the-wall performance to draw 0-0 with Porto, meanwhile.

Our latest instalment of Scout Notes rounds up the goals, assists, team news, injuries and tactical talking points from the five remaining pre-season friendlies contested over the weekend.

Ipswich Town 1-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Felipe Anderson (£7.0m), Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m)
  • Assists: Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m), Sead Haksabanovic

It’s five goals in four pre-season friendlies for Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m), who already features in over a quarter of Fantasy Premier League squads despite his positional reclassification.

Unlike Wilfried Zaha, another midfield star of 2017/18 who has been listed as an FPL forward for the coming season, Arnautovic has featured as an out-and-out striker in all of his appearances over the summer and led the line again at Portman Road over the weekend.

Manuel Pellegrini’s starting XI looked near to full-strength, with Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko (both £7.0m) flanking Arnautovic in attack and Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) once again playing in the central midfield trio.

Anderson opened his West Ham account after just three minutes of the match in Suffolk, the Brazilian bundling home a teasing Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m) cross.

Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena (both £4.5m) looked shaky at the heart of the West Ham defence and were dissected far too easily for Ellis Harrison’s equaliser.

The two centre-backs were bystanders again shortly afterwards when an unmarked Harrison headed against the post.

Arnautovic’s winner was all of his own making, the Austrian collecting a Sead Haksabanovic pass in midfield and surging through the Ipswich defence to prod the ball past home goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) made his debut for the Hammers between the sticks.

Declan Rice (£4.5m), listed as a defender in FPL, once again impressed in central midfield after replacing the mediocre Pedro Obiang (£4.5m) in the second half and is an “out of position” asset to monitor in the Hammers’ two remaining pre-season friendlies – albeit not one who would likely offer much by the way of attacking threat.

Yarmolenko was switched to a “number 10” role after the introduction of Robert Snodgrass at half-time.

WEST HAM UNITED (4-3-3): Fabianski; Fredericks, Ogbonna, Balbuena (Diop 71′), Masuaku (Zabaleta 71′); Obiang (Rice 71′), Kouyate (Snodgrass 46′), Wilshere (Noble 46′); Yarmolenko (Martinez 60′), Anderson (Haksabanovic 60′), Arnautovic (Cullen 81′)

Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Barcelona (3-5 penalties)

  • Goals: Son Heung-min (£8.5m), Georges Kevin-N’Koudou
  • Assists: Christian Eriksen (£9.5m), Anthony Georgiou

Mauricio Pochettino assuaged fears of an injury crisis in his midfield after the International Champions Cup match with Barcelona at the weekend.

Already without Dele Alli (£9.0m), Eric Dier (£5.0m) and Mousa Dembele (£5.0m) after their participation in the World Cup, Pochettino was devoid of the services of Erik Lamela (£6.5m) and Victor Wanyama (£5.0m) for Sunday’s match in Los Angeles and lost Moussa Sissoko (£5.0m) to a hamstring injury midway through the first half.

Speaking of Sissoko’s early withdrawal, Pochettino told the club’s own media channel:

Yes, I think it’s minor. Maybe he was a little bit tired, but I think it’s not a big issue. We will wait… the next few days to see what happened.

Erik (Lamela) was, after the game against Roma, a minor muscle injury, that’s why he’s here with us and we hope he can play against AC Milan.

Victor (Wanyama) has gone back with Tashan (Oakley-Boothe) to London to see the doctor. I think it was the same problem as last season in his knee. We will assess him in the next few days and see what happens.

Sissoko had originally lined up in central midfield with youngster Luke Amos, with Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) starting in front of the pair in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1.

The withdrawal of Sissoko on 35 minutes forced winger Lucas Moura (£7.0m) inside, with substitute Georges Kevin-N’Koudou being stationed on the flank. The versatile Moura was to play as Spurs’ central striker in the second half after the exit of Fernando Llorente (£6.0m) at half-time.

Ben Davies (£6.0m) started his second successive match at centre-back and, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen (both £6.0m) also yet to return from their post-Russia break, there is a strong chance the Welshman could line up at centre-half in the Gameweek 1 encounter with Newcastle United. Davinson Sanchez (£6.0m), at least, returned as a substitute in this match after his World Cup exertions.

With Davies’ FPL appeal rooted in his ability to couple an attacking threat with clean sheet returns (no defender created more chances than Davies last season), his deployment at centre-back would perhaps strengthen the case of right-back Serge Aurier (£6.0m) as an early-season route into the Spurs backline.

Eriksen went close with two free-kicks – striking the woodwork with one of them – as Spurs fought back from 2-0 down to take the match to penalties. Both of the Lilywhites’ goals came from blocked shots as Son Heung-min (£8.5m) and N’Koudou followed up efforts from Eriksen and youngster Anthony Georgiou.

Georgiou missed the decisive kick in the penalty shoot-out as Barcelona ran out 5-3 winners.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga (Vorm 62′); Aurier, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Walker-Peters (Sanchez 46′); Amos, Sissoko (N’Koudou 35′); Son, Eriksen, Moura (Georgiou 62′); Llorente (Skipp 46′)

Derby County 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goal: Diogo Jota (£6.5m)
  • Assist: Ruben Neves (£5.0m)

Diogo Jota (£6.5m) ended Wolves’ three-match run without a goal but couldn’t help his team to a first win in five, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat at Pride Park.

The match saw Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) make his Wolves debut alongside Ruben Neves (£5.0m) in central midfield and the new arrival seems set to share set-piece duties with his fellow Portugal international on the basis of what we saw at Derby over the weekend.

Barry Douglas was, of course, a prominent figure at dead-ball situations last season but his shock departure for Leeds United in midweek has had a ripple effect elsewhere in the squad; his replacement, versatile debutant Jonny, is no stranger to playing in Douglas’s position but is predominantly right-footed and doesn’t offer that same teasing delivery from the left flank in open play.

Moutinho’s deployment in the centre of midfield saw Romain Saiss (£4.5m) drop back to centre-half, where he has featured on umpteen occasions for Morocco.

Jota’s strike, sandwiched by goals for Derby’s David Nugent and Mason Mount, came after Neves had struck the bar with a trademark long-range shot. Neves – who had 90 attempts on goal from outside the box last season – had earlier whistled an effort from distance just past the post.

Leo Bonatini (£5.0m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) both got 45 minutes as the spearhead of the Wolves attack, with Jota and Helder Costa (£5.0m) stationed either side.

Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.5m) was Wolves’ only notable absentee this weekend and was said to have missed out with a knock – although speculation remains rife of a possible move away from Molineux for the Portuguese winger.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS (3-4-3): Patricio (Norris 61′); Saiss (Bennett 61’), Coady, Boly; Doherty, Neves, Moutinho (Gibbs-White 45′), Jonny (Giles, 61′); Costa, Bonatini (Jimenez 45′), Jota (Enobakhare 73′)

Dijon 0-2 Southampton

  • Goals: Shane Long (£5.0m), Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m), Charlie Austin (£6.0m)

Angus Gunn (£4.5m) has been promised further pitch-time by manager Mark Hughes after the young goalkeeper made his Saints debut in the 2-0 win over Dijon FCO at the weekend.

Speaking to the club’s website after their week-long training camp in France came to an end, Hughes said:

He’s (Gunn) going to get more minutes in the next two games as well. I think that’s important. He’ll experience St Mary’s, and that will be a box ticked for him.

Southampton entertain Celta Vigo and Borussia Moenchengladbach this week in their final two pre-season fixtures, with Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) seemingly still in pole position to start 2018/19 as the Saints’ number one – although Fantasy eyes will be on the respective minutes the two goalkeepers are given in the two forthcoming matches at St Mary’s.

Cedric Soares and Maya Yoshida (both £4.5m) are yet to feature in pre-season following their World Cup exploits, although budget defender Jan Bednarek (£4.0m) did return to the Saints’ side after his own participation in Russia with Poland.

Sam McQueen, another £4.0m-rated defensive asset, began on the right flank in Cedric’s absence.

Having featured at centre-back in Southampton’s previous three July friendlies, Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) returned to a more familiar left wing-back role and set up Shane Long (£5.0m) for the Saints’ opener.

Long was replaced by Charlie Austin (£6.0m) at the break and the former Queens Park Rangers striker collected a fortuitous assist for Southampton’s second after his sliced volley fell into the path of Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m), who prodded home from close range.

That Hughes seems keen on fielding two recognised forwards in this 3-5-2 set-up would seemingly bode well for Austin’s chances of a Gamweek 1 start, but it was the Saints’ first-half strike partnership that the Welshman reserved his praise for:

I thought it was important to get Shane back involved. He’s missed a little bit through injury, so it was good that he came back in. I thought Shane and Gabbi in the first half were really bright in their work and caused them a number of problems.

Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) began the match as the furthermost forward central midfielder, with Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.5m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) trialled in “the hole” in the second half.

SOUTHAMPTON (3-5-2): McCarthy (Gunn 46′); Hoedt, Vestergaard, Bednarek (Stephens 46′); Bertrand (Targett 75′), Romeu (Ward-Prowse 66′), Hojbjerg (Davis 46′), Armstrong (Elyounoussi 46′), McQueen (Reed 66′); Long (Austin 46′), Gabbiadini (Redmond 66′)

Porto 0-0 Newcastle

Florian Lejeune‘s (£4.5m) season could be over before it has even begun. The severity of the French centre-half’s knee injury was confirmed by manager Rafael Benitez after the 0-0 draw with Porto at the weekend:

The reality is we have lost Lejeune – he has a cruciate ligament injury, so we will lose him for a while. He will need an operation, and he will need some time. We needed a centre-back before [Lejeune’s injury] and still we need maybe another one. It’s bad news about Lejeune but to see Fabian Schar doing well is important; he will give us this extra option we didn’t have.

Schar (£4.5m) could be the main beneficiary of Lejeune’s prolonged absence, having joined the Magpies from Deportivo La Coruna last week. The Swiss defender made his debut as a 62nd-minute substitute for Ciaran Clark (£4.5m), who will also have designs on that second centre-back spot alongside Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m).

Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) produced a heroic display between the sticks as the Newcastle goal led a charmed life, with Porto hitting the woodwork on two occasions.

Dwight Gayle (£6.0m) could be set for the exit at St James’ Park, meanwhile. Joselu (£5.0m) started his third successive friendly as the Magpies’ lone striker, with Gayle once again being completely overlooked – as he had been at Hull City last weekend – by Benitez.

United are only awaiting a work permit before a deal to bring Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto to the club can be finalised, while speculation is rife that West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon is bound for the north-east in a cash-plus-player swap with Gayle.

Paul Dummett (£4.5m) made his first start of pre-season in what was something approaching Benitez’s first-choice side, although Kenedy (£5.0m) was missing once again after the birth of his child.

NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1): Dubravka (Darlow 72′); Yedlin (Sterry 62′), Clark (Schar 62′), Lascelles, Dummett (Manquillo 46′); Diame (Hayden 72′), Shelvey (Ki 62′); Ritchie (Roberts 72′), Perez (Longstaff 72′), Murphy (Atsu 72′); Joselu (Armstrong 72′)

Keep an eye on Bailey though. If Toby comes in, he’s your Man Utd defender.

      Fab. 4.0
      Robertson. PVA. Lowton. Cedric. (Wan-Bis)
      Salah. Eriksen. Costa. Ramsey/7.5. (Ward)
      Aguero. Aubameyang. (Kamara)

that /7.5 shouldn't be a concern, think Ramsey's the best at that price IMO.

It’s more the double up that I’m wavering on. But Arsenal I believe will perform well this season.

Cedric is also a worry for me as he’s not started a pre season yet. But I suppose Wan-Bis would cover him - even it means double CP defence

Agree that Arsenal look far better now under Emery, I think they will flat-out bully some of the smaller teams after their first two fixtures, can consider a double up from there.

I took Cedric out too - not sure what's the best option at that price now though.

Yeah. Cedric is a sticking point.

But like a suggestion below, could downgrade PVA to Tompkins and upgrade Cedric to a 6m

I have been considering this also.

However, due to my weak bench I am focusing on nailed players.
But of course, Mendy is more appealing than Cedric.

I just don't get that moaning about players form in preseason and how bad we will get burned by picking in form players like Arnautovic etc (who are also nailed!).
Using that logic maybe we should get players who are crap in preseason?
As I see it preseason is the only way to see how teams and players do, how does new coach see the system etc. The World Cup is the factor obv as for example City or Spurs games doesnt give much information.
So using knowledge from last season and looking at preseason (WC factor in mind) we must pick players to our teams so players like Arnie or Jota are in my team. Not taking player because he is in form is..hmmm not wise.
I will also stay clear brom EVE or Bou def but not saying that in GW3-4 will get Coleman but for now I dont see any reason to start with him.

I think what people are saying is that
Performing well in pre-season =/= doing well in the season.
It also doesn't follow that the reverse is true and you look at players who performed badly...

Like you said, it's a good way to see the coach's system, his preference of players, etc. But in a less competitive environment against (generally) weaker teams, don't take it too seriously.

They dont mean dont get players in form, just that you shouldnt expect attackers to perform.as well as in pre season.

As in dont be surprised if Liverpool beat West Ham 3:0 and Arnie gets a YC

Because he is in form in preseason doesnt mean he'll score vs LIV, and Wolves cant even score in preseason apparantly

Nobody can criticise picking Arnautovic - he performed last year as well as preseason. When people doubt preseason form it should be for new players or players who have not done anything in the past. Ones like Redmond or Andre Gray

Buy guessing the highest 4.5m keeper? Might be tricky.

5.5m for Ederson is probably one of THE bargains in FPL this season.

            Unless Kasper goes to Chelsea.

Courtois to Madrid gathered some pace yesterday.
Schmeichel at Chelsea would be excellent...not as excellent as if they were still managed by Conte, but still good enough to be the obvious best value keeper.

Cant see Sanchez being worse than Mkh this season, but I would not start with either of them. If one hits form, then its gogo, especially Mkh at the price of 7.
10.5 Sanchez is a wait and see.

With Hughes intent on playing two up top at Southampton and Bertrand/Soares providing great delivery from the wing back roles, isn't Austin a great call? He will also be on penalties and had the best goals per minute ratio except for Salah and Aguero!

        Great opening fixtures too...

I am pretty sure he is nailed, with a two up top formation his only competition is Shane Long!? How are there better alternatives? He had the second best goal per minute ratio last season as a striker and his opening fixtures are:

            Burnley
            Everton
            Leicester
            Crystal Palace
            Brighton

He isn't nailed though. Long and Gabbi are his competition, and could easily start over him. They're both a lot more mobile, and Hughes seemingly likes that.

Austin is a great FPL asset as he's always in the box and gets himself in good positions, but that may not be enough to get him regular starts - I think he's more of a case that we all want him to start more than actually thinking he will

Hughes has been playing two up top in a 3-5-2 recently, so there is space for two strikers. Long has never ever scored enough goals, I am really surprised he is still a premier league player. If Austin is fit he has to play over Long!

As I said - we're trying to justify what we want rather than actually assessing the events. Austin does score goals, but maybe overall Southampton score less with him in the team than Long.

I am not actually, anything but (I am a Brighton fan)! Hughes has been playing Austin/Long and Gabbi together in the last couple of matches in a 3-5-2. So, i guess you have to decide if you think Austin is a better choice than Long, which i think is obvious haha!

Austin and Gabbi are both 6m, so if Gabbi seems to be the first choice, with either Austin, or Long...surely Gabbi is the better player to start with.

Gabbi is the most likely starter, but I am going to keep watching preseason and listen to interviews and hope for a hint that Austin is playing. I don't trust Gabbiadini to score enough goals to be worth including, but Austin is worth including

Not a Chelsea fan, but I know that Moses 100% won't be a starter. Azpi will be first choice RB and although Moses could be a nice OOP option under Sarri, as Sarri has been playing him at RW, he will merely be an impact sub

Auba faces City and Chelsea in the first two.

Irrespective of who is the better player etc, for those with both City and Chelsea premium defence - surely we have to start with Aguero over Auba for the first two, in order to maximise potential points?

Or happy to hedge your bets and go with a nailed Auba over a possibly rotated Aguero? Possibly benching your defenders for those matches?

Sarri plays more offensively right? So that Chelsea game isn't as dire as it looks.

So arguably it's one objectively tough fixture, and fantastic fixtures GW3 onwards. Picking Auba from the start saves you a crucial transfer, which I think is more important.

Aguero is a switch waiting to happen for me, and the fact that Jesus ang Aguero is back at the same time, the minutes will be limited from gw1

          I think you're right!

Having said that I do not fancy City def nor Chelsea. Simply don't know who will start, and who will be benched when the WC-players return (the worst transfer is a a benched premium defender to another premium defender).

Also, keep in mind, that Gunners are gonna field almost their strongest team where City & Chelsea won't be able to field their strongest 11. Therefore I would personally not play City/Chelsea defenders in those games (Gunners are gonna score in both, and I think they will beat City at home - they are lucky to face them in GW1).

Agüero -> Auba is an easy swap after GW2 if his starts are still at risk.

Aguero does have better fixtures - Arsenal still have a poor defence, whereas City (and Chelsea) could quite easily keep Arsenal out.

Based on that alone I'd say Aguero.

But then we have the problem of Jesus. But then countering that Laca is now a problem.

Ugh - tempted to just go Arnie, Zaha, Wood and bank 5m 🙂

Arsenals defense will look stronger than Citys in GW1 tbf.

            No Stones, Kompany & Walker.

Unknown fitness: Danilo, Mendy, Otamendi, Ederson

            Knock: Laporte

I look at that Chelsea team and wonder where the goals are coming from. Morata might get 15, Hazard 12, Willian is probably good for 8 and then I genuinely can’t see anybody else getting more than a handful. Surely they will struggle this season again.

In Sarri's system the wide players contribute with more goals.

Can expect goals from the most forward midfield player as well, could be RLC or Barkley, or someone else.

Personally I think Jorginho is the best midfield buy this entire window, and Chelsea will surprise. Keeping Hazard was crucial.

Thing is... Morata is a whole 1.5m cheaper.

Of all the things I’d like to happen for value in FPL it’s Morata & Lacazette to both become killer goalscorers, they would be so affordable.

You’d basically have 2x 11.0/11.5 players for nearly 5.0 cheaper than they should be

Morata 25 goals would put the cat amongst the pigeons. Starting with a brace in GW1 & there will be chaos

Napoli scored 73 goals last season and they really spread the goals out throughout the team. Mertens got 20 or so whilst the two wingers got roughly 10. The midfielders got 4/5 each and then the centre backs got 4/5 each too. Full backs added a couple.

I can see Morata getting 15, Bats 5-10 from the bench, Hazard 15 too, Willian/Pedro to get 10 between them, Barkley to get 10 or so, Alonso to get 5+ again and then the rest scattered through the team.

VVD, Mané, Robertson, Salah & Firmino will all outscore Keita imo. So if you have Keita in your team you’d be much better tomswap him to whichever one of those 5 you don’t have

Peltier got knocked out, and put in hospital with a concussion. The man is a warrior though, and seems fine.
                          Mahrez fecked his ankle.
Deulofeu... I'm not sure. Ate too many Big Macs? "Lacks Match Fitness" - May need to reconsider him.

Silvaand Pedro may have to be moved on eventually I guess, rest of the team looks fine. Ake an Bertrand could be nice differentials although Bournemouth were very shaky in defense last season.
                        Sorloth assured of starts?

Bournemouth is shaky AF, but I kinda like Áke, and their fixtures seems nice.
My focus will be to transfer 6-8mil midfields in and out of my team.
Lucas/Pedro/B.Silva can quick and easy become Jota/Schürrle/Gros/Anderson/Mkhi/Ramsey/Shaq/Madisson/Townsend and so on.

Not sure on Sørloth, but he seems more nailed than Kamara. Could just pick Kamara, and keep 0.5 ITB since I am looking to play 3-5-2 anyway.

                      Another day another draft

                      Ederson (4)
                      Toby Robbo Luiz (Schlupp WB)
                      Mahrez Salah Eriksen Costa/Hughes
                      Aguero King Sorloth

I have 0.5 ITB so King can be Arnie if need be.
Double Palace defense is only illusion since WB may remain on bench always and want to exploit Schlupp's possible OOP potential.
Luiz can be any other 5.5 defender, but want someone from Chelsea defense. may even get Schemichael or Courtous once transfer is sorted.
Those 3 players of 5 in midfield and striker position are a bit worrisome and hope to rotte them with the fourth defender for two positions.

                      Any suggestions to improve this?

Toby is a bit meh pick - he may not even play given WC and transfer speculation

Maybe downgrade him for Cerdic and upgrade Costa/Hughes to a 6.5 mid

Is there a bit of value potential in the promoted 4.5’s this year?

I’ve been hearing murmurings if attacking threat from Boly, Bamba, and Doherty, and Wolves/Cardiff has the best defences in the championship last year with decent starting fixtures this year

But might just throw in Sanchez now as a placeholder and hopeful punt, go Cityless for GW1 and captain Auba!

True, KDB is a hell of an athlete so he will likely be back in the mix quick smart. Who knows, possibility of him still playing GW1 I guess!

I like the idea of punting on Sanchez for GW1 a lot, especially whenhe’s A placeholder formKDB, it’s a very win win situation.

                        Scenario 1 - Sanchez blanks v Leicester - get KDB GW2
Scenario 2 Sanchez scores v Leicester - then you have options

                        A very good plan imo

Same - not filled with confidence by Utd at all. But they did start like a house on fire last year, so hopefully Jose is trolling us all and they go out and smash Leicester 5-0 with a Sanchez hattrick and Assist from a corner for a Bailly goal lol

Sánchez will be plying as striker also

no, but I have Mahrez who I might transfer if I feel like its worth it.
But would never call a blank and a tranafer of said player a win - easy choice =/= win

It’s a win vs. Starting with KDB though, which is the baseline scenario being analysed?

He might play as a striker, but Man U will create

                            dno what just happened.

Man U will create less than 5 chances that game.

I’d say 6.0 or 6.5, he’d be doing well to score more than 7 or 8 league goals though

Coleman based on current info, Luiz if nailed

                        Mane
Zaha if he stays at CP

Yes, but its hard because half the good picks (Davies, TAA, Mendy, Bellerin) are rotation risks. So you need a strong bench too.
