Fantasy Football Scout are giving you the opportunity to ask questions of our esteemed panel of FPL personalities ahead of the 2018/19 season.

If you are stuck on a particular issue and want some external input then this is your chance to get the feedback you need.

    My 5 cents on the annual "pre-season essential debate". (Spoiler - I think the debate is flawed and argue that no player can be essential in preseason)

    Every year people debate whether the most costly player is "essential". It seems to me that the debate goes somewhere along answering two sets of questions. First, questions like these; How many point did the player score last season? (303) How many points is it reasonable to think that he will score next season? (arguments for and against a raise/fall) and "how much does he now cost? (13m). The answer to the first group of questions questions gives you a "subjective value" that most likely will determine whether you want him or not.

    The second set of questions goes like this; How many other people have him? (51% as i wright these words). How much will he be captained? (subjective assessment). Is he likely to trash teams? How will I get him in if he does rocket? The answer to the second group of questions gives you the "fear factor" of NOT owning him. Even if you don't like what you get for 13m its dangerous to go without.

    I will now argue that the subjective conclusion about whether a player is "essential" or not should mostly be the result of other questions than those above:

    Remember that the game force you to pick 15 players. If one player _guarantees_ 3000 points in a season but cost 110m, you cant pick him regardless of how "essential he would have been =P. The point is that you can only assess whether a player is essential when you know what you get for the money that is left after you buy him. That means that its depend on all other players in the game. If there is many good "value" players in the game, then you would probably have little better to spend your money on than the most expensive guy that gives you those few extra points. Example: If Hudson-Odoi break trough this season under Sarri and delivers high end points total, then its more likely that Salah wil be essential(!), If you "splash the cash that Hudson-Odoi would free up it would only bolster your bench. But in preseason its always very hard to know if all those "valuemonsters" are real or not. Lineups and form get increasingly easier to predict as the season progress. For these reasons "essentionalness" is rare in preseason.

    The lessen is: feel free to try going without Salah and don't feel bad about it. Switch to the essential player later in the season when you know how is the "value" players.

    Surprisingly the questions you need to answer if you want a good conclusion about Salah is these kinds;

    Is there one or more starting 4.0 golies?
    Is there reliable and cheep OOP alterantives in defence and in midfield?
    Is there "magic beens" (playing and attacking 4.5) in midfield?
    Is there a reliable, cheep "third striker" that will score many goals?

    If the answer to these kinds of questions is "Yes", then Salah is probably essential

      for me at least, getting Salah isn't compromising the rest of my team whatsoever to the extent that im struggling to get a decent XI out.

      To be honest, most had Kane at the start of last season for .5 less without questioning it and Salah is arguably the better prospect going into the new season than Kane was last

      The situation is further complicated by returnees from the WC. You'll note many opting for premium defenders, sometimes 3. This hardly suggests the 13 is causing hardship but when everyone's back we may see some funds shift from the rear.

      I feel people could get a black eye from this. I would argue Salah is more essential than ever for GW1... if he scores well, in a home game to West Ham, and you don’t have him, it even the best other 10 players in the game will save you from an overall rank trashing. It’s just not worth the risk imo.

      Also the captaincy factor - having Salah boosts your squad value to 113.0m...captaining Kun or Auba only gets you to 111.0m.

      Would you say no to an extra 2.0 budget, for free?

    Kamara played 90 minutes today for Fulham - do we think he's a decent player to have as a third striker, or will he be at risk of seeing his price fall to 4.4?

        I read on Twitter that Kamara only played because Mawson didn't; had Mawson played, Le Marchand would move to LB and Sessegnon would take Kamara's place on the wing.

            Lawson won’t be ready until September because of his surgery anyway. So if Kamara is onlyplaying due to Mawson being out, then he should get 3-4 gameweeks.

                I think he is pretty safe to keep his price for a quite long time. There are no better 4.5 fwd options and people will have bigger fires to handle in the beginning of the season.

                Fun fact: If you are going with 3-5-2 and one of your strikers is Mitrovic, if you also have Kamara then you're covered in case Mitrovic ever misses a game due to injury / suspension (assuming that Kamara is fit).

                      I read that it only happened because Le Marchand was playing at CB rather than LB.
                      When Mawson starts, Le Marchand will move to LB, and Sessegnon will take Kamara's position on the wing.

                    Ranieri said Mahrez is effective on the right so he can cut in. He said when he arrived, Mahrez was playing centrally and wasn't anywhere near as effective.

                          Not sure it's quite the same situation.

                          If Luiz starts tomorrow and it's mostly full strength I'd be confident it's his and Rudiger's position to lose.

                          We know what Mourinho is like with Shaw, and Young had a very good season last year.

                                Will be Bailly's position to lose once he starts the season. If he remains fit I don't see why he'd just randomly bench him

                                    I hope that's the case, but perhaps if United sign another CB then it will make it likelier that Bailly gets rotated, considering his fitness issues and the fact that Mourinho preferred Lindelof against certain opponents.

                            One of them will basically be perma-benched, and the other is coming off of an amazing season at Fulham and seems to be their talisman (potentially on pens too). Mitrovic had over 40% goal involvement when he was on the pitch last season for Fulham. Hardly the worst punt to take, considering he's only 6.5m.

                              Always up there when it comes to creating chances and now has a manager who will hopefully lease new life into the team, plus a full season with Aubameyang has to help.

                              Biggest issue is I don't see Man City scoring many less goals this year so the likes of KDB will be assisting a fair few of them!

                              His goals today have definitely out him on the radar. Like Bournemouth and like Howe, he is an attacking manager. I think King will just look out for me as Tosun, Arnie and Zaha are the 'main men's for their teams, whereas Bournemouth seem to spread it round a bit more. He is looking a good pick though, and likely on pens.

                                Exactly. It's a risk and makes early WC more likely. I just like all those def/mid options and perma captaining Salah means 11m for Kun seems a lot.

                              This is where I was - Aguero, Arnie, fodder in a 442/352. But those guys all look good value, especially when compared to the mids on offer at the same price. I don't fancy many mids below 8.5 really... Possibly Pedro but that could go very wrong

                              If Aguero bags a couple tomorrow though I'm not sure I could go without...

                          Followed Arsenal in pre season, still no closer to knowing what their starting 11 will be. Few points

                          - Guendouzi might get the nod in midfield, he's looked very good. Can get caught in possesion and will probably cost Arsenal a goal or two but at 19, he looks a top prospect.

                          - Reckon they might go Auba up top vs City with Lacazette benched.

                          Leno vs Cech is a coin flip, i think the German will start because of his distribution and speed.

                          -Back 4, hard to call, Chambers interests me because he's probably been the best CB in pre season.

                            I worry about our defence. Chambers isn't good enough and there is generally a real lack of pace at the back.

                            We will need a couple of goals per game to be winning. Can't see us grinding out 1-0's.

                                Yep you’d think that but I’m not convinced this season. Especially with so many yet to return to training and not involved in preseason but I could be proved wrong. Also the lack of signings this transfer window (again) really leaves a bitter taste.
