Pre-Season

Five things FPL managers should follow in Community Shield final

Chelsea and Manchester City meet in the FA Community Shield today and there is plenty for Fantasy Premier League managers to be keeping their eye on.

In fact, Fantasy enthusiasts couldn’t have hand-picked two better teams to look at in a competitive setting before the Gameweek 1 deadline.

With plenty still up in the air for both clubs, this is a perfect opportunity for some Fantasy research ahead of the 2018/19 season.

WINGING IT

There will be a lot of interest in midfielders Pedro (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.5m) today, as managers await a potentially cost-saving route into the Chelsea attack.

The pair have started all of Chelsea’s pre-season matches so far on the flanks of the front three, either side of Alvaro Morata (£9.0m) and, by all accounts, have impressed hugely.

Pedro has two goals to his name in three matches while Hudson-Odoi (one assist) has been deemed the best performer of Chelsea’s pre-season so far.

The absences of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Willian (£7.5m), and their potential departures before the transfer window closes, leaves a huge opportunity in this area of the team for Pedro and Hudson-Odoi. If they can take it, then Fantasy managers will be very pleased with the money they could save on these two exciting options.

But there is even more to pay attention to in the wide areas for today’s match. FPL defender Victor Moses (£6.0m) has now been used as a second-half substitute on the right of the forward line twice in pre-season, creating serious potential for him to be a powerful out-of-position option.

The only reason he has not started a match yet is because of his extended World Cup leave, so it is entirely possible that he could feature from the beginning in an attacking position at Wembley today. If that happens, he could quickly become the most popular Chelsea defender in FPL…

GOALONSO?

…But the most fashionable Chelsea stoppers right now are Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m). Over 16 percent of managers have backed one of these as they prepare to line-up as the full-backs at Stamford Bridge this season.

The scrapping of the 3-4-3 wing-back system by new manager Maurizio Sarri has the potential to change the output of both of these premium players which is why it will be good to see them in action as more traditional full-backs in a 4-3-3.

Crucially, we need to see whether or not either of them have as much license to get forward, as they have done in previous seasons.

If the pair are afforded that against Man City today then we know that £6.5m is a price worth paying; if not, then it might make sense to look elsewhere.

The cheaper David Luiz (£5.5m) looks like he’ll be a regular at centre-back at the beginning of the season and, as we’ve already alluded to, Moses could even offer more advanced positions than Alonso and Azpilicueta for £0.5m less.

THE MAHREZ SHOW

Pep Guardiola revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) would be fit to compete in the Community Shield.

This is a big boost for Fantasy managers who were hoping to tap into his apparent monopoly on a starting place in the early part of the season. As one of a few first-team players at Man City who did not take part in this summer’s World Cup, the Algerian may well get several weeks without rotation from Guardiola, which will be important given the fixtures on offer. The only ones not back in training yet are Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m), leaving the door open for Mahrez to play.

We think he’ll probably play in the midfield but it is even a possibility that he could play in a forward’s role within a 3-5-2 system. Either way, we should pay close attention to Mahrez today and see where he might slot into City’s system.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the more likely of City’s natural centre-forwards to start as he played fewer minutes with Argentina than Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) did with Brazil in Russia.

It’s also worth monitoring Leroy Sané’s (£9.5m) involvement today. It was believed he would be an important asset to own for Gameweek 1 having missed out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad, but he is still yet to make a start for City this summer and Guardiola recently revealed he had a lot of work to do to get fit for the new season.

ON THE MENDY

Right now the defensive picture at Man City looks very unclear, and the Community Shield will be an important indicator of who will line-up at Arsenal in Gameweek 1.

At this current point in time perhaps the only player at this end of the pitch we can be confident will get game-time is goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m), simply because he did not feature in Brazil’s World Cup campaign.

Outside of that, it becomes pure conjecture to try and piece together a predicted starting line-up, as only Guardiola knows what state his defensive assets are in.

The fact that Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) was in the training squad for the pre-season tour has proved not quite as encouraging as first thought, because the Frenchman was not involved in any matches in the USA. In terms of competition, England man Kyle Walker (£6.5m) left Russia with an injury and Danilo (£5.5m) is still carrying the knock he picked up with Brazil. Fabian Delph (£5.5m) was another training late-comer. Perhaps Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) could feature on one flank but Mendy may still have to play on the other.

As for centre-backs, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up an injury on tour, while John Stones (£5.5m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£5.5m) have only recently returned to training.

TOO SOON?

Given the special circumstances of this Community Shield match, it is entirely possible that it counts for less than it normally would when predicting Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Ultaimtely, neither one of Guardiola or Sarri wants to be preparing a full first-team for this fixture, with so many important figures affected by the World Cup.

In fact, the City manager said on Friday: “We would prefer to be in another situation but I think Maurizio Sarri is the same. It is what it is, we will adapt and play with guys in better condition. I think we have six substitutes too so everybody will be involved but maybe 90 minutes will not be possible.”

That could indicate that there may well be players who aren’t considered ready for the Community Shield but may become available for the trip to Arsenal in the next week. Accordingly, just because a player is given preference in a position this weekend, does not mean he will hold onto his starting berth the following week.

That’s why Guardiola and Sarri’s press conferences next week could be even more important than this first match of the 2018/19 English season – although it will still be good to witness the return of competitive action for two top-flight teams.

I know it’s important to not “chase last weeks points” and to not knee jerk but at what stage do you jump on a bandwagon when a player is performing? I’m sure it’s happened to most people, where they regret not getting a certain player in sooner. Thoughts?

Early season bandwagons are fine to jump on to catch value increases. Even when Capoue stopped scoring after his early bandwagon, he still gave people more team value

      I'd do it when:
      - You can afford the transfer and nothing is more pressing
      - If you're replacing someone you want to transfer out anyway
      - I've waited more than a week or two and after the initial kneejerk dies down his ownership continues to rise
      - If it looks sustainable - it's clear this guy's the lynchpin to a mid-table team and not just on a streak (GroB/Siggy) - or this was an apparent back-up who now starts (Kane) - or he's guaranteed the odd return due to set-pieces (milli) - or something special is happening (alonso / mahrez / salah)

The main thing is that if it becomes a MUST you don't punish yourself for missing a few weeks of a price rise and points hauls by continuing to refuse to get him

Couldn't find the original poster to reply to, but here are the cheap assets that respective fans believe will be first team starters for their team. Take from it what you will, has they are fan opinions.

4.0 DEF Bednarek, Wan-Bissaka, Schelotto, Peltier (Richards), Bennett

4.5 MID Stephens, Westwood, Gunnarsson, McDonald, Hogg, Oriol-Romeu, Chalobah

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/aug/05/premier-league-2018-19-fans-previews-part-1-arsenal-to-huddersfield
    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/aug/05/premier-league-2018-19-fans-previews-part-2-leicester-to-wolves

    - Notes -
    Arsenal: Leno over Cech.
Bournemouth: David Brooks (5.0) could potentially be OOP or in an advance position just behind Wilson and King.
Brighton: Seem to believe Schelotto over Bruno.
Burnley: Joe Hart is currently having/had a medical, was 4.5 previously with WHU. Heaton still out with a calf injury, Pope long term with dislocation.
    Cardiff: -
Chelsea: Fabregas 6.5 potential bargain if allowed to go forward ahead of Kante and Jorginho. Also on corners which couples well with Morata track record with headed goals.
Crystal Palace: Wan-Bissaka seems the most assured of all the 4.0 defensive assets. Max Meyer at 6.0 brought in to fill RLC sized hole. Has previously played in the hole behind lone strikers. Zaha at risk of being occasionally reverse OOP.
Everton: Believes Digne over Baines. Would all set pieces fall to Siggy? or would Tosun take pens?
Fulham: Cairney (5.0, Fulham Captain) behind a front three of Schurrle, Mitrovic, Sessegnon. No room for Kamara (4.5) in first team.
    Huddersfield: -
Leicester: Maddison (6.5) seems to have nailed down the Mahrez role within the team. Ben Chilwell seems to be playing extremely advanced, almost OOP, also shared free kicks with Maddison down the left hand side.
Liverpool: Lovern / TAA when back could provide a cheaper alternative to Robertson/VVD.
Manchester City: Rotation nightmare. KDB minutes potentially at risk due to Mahrez? Will Mendy start the season? Can Stones nail down a place? Community shield will hopefully explain more today.
Manchester United: Will the signing of Fred allow Pogba (8.0) to play to his strengths. Toby Alderweireld looks set to join, who will make way within central defence?
    Newcastle: Kenedy 5.0
    Southampton: -
Tottenham: Toby Alderweireld leaving could see Ben Davies pushed into a CB role.
    Watford: Chalobah 4.5
West Ham: Fabianski vs Adrian still up for debate. Arnautovic at risk of also being reverse OOP if Hernandez comes back into the team.
Wolves: Bennett another 4.0 certain to play. Douglas leaving reduced the overall appeal beyond that of Patrico. Neves on penalties, but missed his last one against Villarreal. Jota OOP and second in line for pens.

Just cheap bench fodder for me. Saying that, Gunnarsson and Stephens do appeal also. But Chalobah can play numerous positions, so almost a utility man. Capoue plays in similar position and didn't stop him having a nice little run last year.

Who is going to replace Douglas? Tagliafico? Since they sold Douglas and are spending that much, they must have some plans. And after next signing I have no idea what their defence is going to be.

Tough one, rumours of United wanting another cb which would reduce Baillys minutes even more put me off him so probably PVA but I think there’s also other good options at 5.5.
Bellerin - when his fixtures clear up
          and also
Luiz - who may seem a bit punty but I thinks he’s worth a shot given Sarri saying in an interview recently something along the lines of really liking his attitude and that he’ll have an important role in the team - take of that what you will though

Nope. He would be a great asset if he'd start, but if he doesn't then you paid 6.0 for a guy who'll get 20-30 minutes of game time. Crucially: Won't get a clean sheet bonus unless he plays 60.

The reason why I am asking this is:

A- Their flanks are covered left and right without Mahrez
      B- He takes set pieces
C- He posses something else than KDB so they could confuse the opposition if needed
D- KDB looked tired at the end of the season
E- I want a semi nailed guy from that team but not sure even about KDB now

Just stop over thinking things, it’s such a needless common trait on here.

If I remember correctly, all new players in City needed time to figure out what Pep wants from them. Mahrez played his own game at Leicester, now things change a lot. It might be 3-4 months before he starts producing points the way we want him to.

      Different players

Mahrez is attacking mid primarily...he'll be fighting with Sterling, Sane and Dilva/Bilva primarily?

KDB can be attacking, but nearly always plays the deeper lying playmaker position for City...that's not something Mahrez does.

      Boly @ Wolves if you're dismissing Tomkins/Schlupp

Southampton have options and good fixtures, but I don't fancy CSs there...same with Bournemouth.

Newcasle would be great...but their opening fixture are horrific.

Watford might be the next best defence to look at.

B Alisson, Richarlison & Morata > Pickford, Pedro & Firmino
C Go with both Pedro & Richarlison & downgrade King or Tosun to a 4.5 forward

    Alisson
    Cook Bailly Luiz
    Mane Salah Sanchez Richarlison
    Morata King Tosun

B: Within +- 5% of last years points
C: -5% to -15% of last years points

    Foster
    Mendy - Tomkins - Robertson
    Eriksen - Ralls - Richarlison - Mane - Salah (c)
    Aguero - Arnie

    4.0m - Doherty - Sorloth - Wan-Bissaka

Considering switching to a 3-4-3, and doing this transfer:
    Eriksen, Sorloth > Ozil, King/Austin

Would you do it? Feel like Ozil could be a great differential although opening fixtures are offputting

Personally think this is Chelsea's best team:

    Courtois
    Azpi Luiz Rudiger Alonso
    Jorginho Fabregas Kante
    Willian Morata Hazard

    Caballero
    Zappa Christensen Cahill Emerson
    Barkley Bakayoko RLC
    Moses Giroud Pedro

Right wing. Looked sharp pre-season and shouldn't have competition until Lingard is fit. Out of the 6.5 players he is probably the most proven?
Played over 2000min last season aswell if memory serves me well.
