The ScoutCast Episode 265 – Difference

This week the ScoutCast crew are determined to bust the myth that they share identical strategies.

Long-term maverick Luke returns to reveal his freshly Wildcarded team which bravely went into Gameweek 2 without Manchester City’s hat-trick hero Sergio Aguero and last season’s points-scoring sensation Mohamed Salah.

In stark contrast, Az is continuing his march up the rankings thanks to his faith in this premium pair, and his resolve in resisting broadsheet tittle-tattle hinting that the Argentinian would be dropped.

David is also beating a different drum and keen to explain the reasons behind his chequered FPL history and how his fortunes already look better this time around.

That leaves me as the only dullard representative, armed with a bunch of ownership statistics, a goals imminent table and a dubious ‘camping’ excuse to explain my recent poor captaincy decision.

Our differing views across a range of key issues facing Fantasy Premier League manages ahead of Gameweek 3 are aired.

Our assessment of Chelsea and Arsenal assets ahead of their favourable fixtures is top of our list. And we also ponder whether Spurs’ players can compete as assets this season and indulge in some bargain hunting up front.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Do you think ings and TAA combined will get more points than Kamara and Robbo? I’m not so sure. And how likely are you to pick ings?

This is what’s swaying it for me. 1.0 buys an awful lot... TAA well capable of a goal/Assist too?

I’m actually considering TAA but as a double up with Robbo. He’s the best 5 mil defender around. I personally wouldn’t spend that 1 mil on Kamara to Ings. I think ings is more of a wait and see job for now

I think with Ings being the only Saint firing, he is good value for 5.5m Got him as my 2nd striker with Kamara permabenched. With Kun as main striker my default formation is 451.

Depends if they're in your starting line-up or on your bench. If you start Kamara he'll get a lot of one-points and it'll be a waste.

Ings and TAA in your starting line up will get more than Robbo and Kamara starting.

On my wildcard I've gone with TAA to enable Salah/Mane plus Hazard/Aguero/Mendy. Can't have everything.

If I may ask, how does that team look? I tried making one with Haz, Mane, Mendy, Salah, TAA and Aguero, but the rest of the team ends up very weak..

True, wonder how likely is this though... plus if it happens, TAA > Clyde is an option?

Think could be a good strategy from now on with Liverpool having tougher fixtures coming up and freeing up that 1M. Can't see Clyne taking TAA's place anytime soon as the back line is doing great so far. Think if you are going to strengthen other areas considerably then he is worth bringing in in place of Robertson.

TAA does not tend to get into positions for cutbacks, his crosses always come from much further away, whereas Robbo makes runs so that he gets to ping it into the box right from the edge, therefore getting more assists.

I usually pick my captain early or at least have a clear idea who it will be, but this week is tough between three players:
    A. Mane
    B. Aguero
    C. Auba
    D. Hazard (outside punt)

Mane, fixture wise seems the better pick but, despite his form, putting the armband on him makes me feel ucomfotable!
Agueo away or a punt on Auba to come good is also hard to seperate.

Interesting that Hazard (who may not start and if he does will probably get an hour tops) is an outside punt, whereas Auba, carrying no form, looking miserable af at the weekend, and missing sitters is an option for you.

Auba is getting into goalscoring positions and had two pretty tough games but is not at home to a pretty leaky WHU side!

I have Salah so will naturally captain him.

In your case if captain Aubameyang. Arsenal will destroy West Ham and he has a point to prove after those missed chances v Chelsea. I think it could be his turn to haul on Saturday and he's a great differential pick. If Brighton put on a heroic display you'll be quids in

Cheers mate, my thinking exactly, he's the one I want to punt on! It's probably just the fact that I captained Josh King at home to Cardiff in GW1 (which obviously failed miserably) that's putting me off slightly!

Every week there will be discussions about Man City line up and which players from their team we must have. I want to give my opinion on how they will play this year. It is just my opinion and I am not an expert. I see yourself as OK FPL manager (50k and 30k rank in last two seasons) and slightly better when we are talking about football knowledge, tactics etc. And sorry for my bad english in advance.

If we are talking about formations I am pretty sure City will play 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 this year. But this are just the basic formations, we all know that when they are playing this is much more flexible. Last year the play 4-3-3 with inverted full backs (Delph, Walker) because of Mendy injury, Sane and Sterling were providing width. Now Mendy is available and this gives City much more flexibility.
In goal there is no competition for Ederson. City will have one of two best defences in the league for sure. He is good FPL option, but with Mendy to cover their defence and lack of saves I think there are better options.

City have four central defenders. Laporte it is the best option for now, because he is left footed and with his good pace he can cover the space behind Mendy very good. But there is too much competition, all four central defenders are good, in 3-5-2 even Walker can play right CB so I would avoid them.

Walker and Mendy are first choice fullbacks. Both will start majority of matches (30+). Walker was rested this week, but I am pretty sure this was because of the long season (World cup) and Guardiola didn´t want to risk injury. Walker will play full back in 4-3-3 and can play WB or CB in 3-5-2. Mendy will always be more attacking so he is option to go. He will be 1st or 2nd scoring defender in FPL (Alonso not playing CL, so less rotation for him), so for me he is must-have.

Fernadinho will be holding midfielder in both formations, but he is not FPL option. Gundogan will play a lot with KDB injured, but with Mendy available (this means wingers can come inside this year) he won´t get as much in the box this year. David Silva is fantastic player, but he is 32 and Guradiola said he will be rested more this year. Bernardo Silva is in great form, but with David back I think he will be used a lot on positions where he is not that dangerous (like WB this weekend). Keep if you have him, but don`t buy. Sane played as LW last year. We know Guardiola like that just one of full back or winger is providing width and with Mendy on left back doing that this year, Sane will be used a lot more like a substitution this year. Sterling will be left inside forward most. But when City play 3-5-2 he can go on the bench or even play like right WB. He will score a lot of goals, but with rotation risk and a lot of other good mid options i think the best is to wait for now. Mahrez will play like RW or even right WB. With KDB out he will have some set pieces. In RW position I think he will come inside a lot, overload the midfield and make short passes, but won´t be so much in the box as Sterling.

In attack Aguero is first option. He will be rotated sometimes but this year City can play with 2 forwards and Guardiola said how Aguero is feeling very well after the operation, so he won`t be rotated as much as last year. We know what Aguero is capable when playing, so you need to have him in your team. Jesus will play less, can play as LW (inside forward) and he is not that dangerous, so NO for now.

Conclusion: City are favourites to win the league, they score a lot of goals and are pretty tight at the back, so we need their players. Mendy and Aguero are must have. They will play majority of matches, both are capable of big hauls, Aguero is very good captain option when playing at Etihad. We want City mid too, but for now I would wait. There is too much risk of rotation and we have a lot of good options from other teams. If you are chasing and want a differential then go for one of Sterling, Mahrez, David Silva.

Thanks for your analysis, appreciate it. What are you thoughts on D.Silva being extra important whilst KDB is out? City need two central playmakers in both formations so surely D.Silva will be one of those pretty much every week until KDB is back?

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Gw1 no KDB, no Dilva, no problem. Pep knew Huddersfield would defend deep so sacrificed speed for creativity. Against Wolves the speed of Sterling, Sane and Walker will kill them, not so much need for the creativity. Pep picks his squads to exploit the oppo's weaknesses, so there will be plenty times where Dilva will not be required.

They will play 3 midfielders in both formations. Fernandinho will be holding midfielder, so then there are David Silva, Bernardo and Gundogan (+ Foden) for two central midfield places. I think Gundogan gives City stability in midfield, so he will play like deep lying playmaker. So there is one spot left. David Silva is first choice imo, but there will be rotation. He will play games, get points but you need to be prepared, he won´t start or will be subbed early (like this week for Foden).
Of course Bernardo and David can play together (like Bernardo and Foden in CS), but then we need to see who will be more defensive.

I’m interested to know when people plan to wildcard and why. This my 4th year playing and I’ve always hit the button after GW2 or 3 due to terrible starts. This year I’ve got 94 and 87 points respectively so don’t feel the need to right now.

Perhaps people don’t plan and simply react to either a bad start or bad run of scores.

    Discuss!

I thought the same but I have WC for the simple reason i am chasing the price rises which are important this time of year and I needed to get rid of the likes of Mahrez for mane but couldn’t as I would have to take -8 or -12 to get it right for my team. So looking at it I thought why not change half the team and really get it as kind set and forget and then do the odd transfer here and there over the next 10–12 weeks. Overall pretty happy I did it, I usually WC in the first international week. I scored 75 & 76 over the last couple of weeks so hoping for more this week which I think it will.

Unless you fell you absolutely have to (and sometimes teams can fall apart in a very short time) then leave it as late as you can - temptation should be resisted. You will love having a wild card available when it comes to week 10+.

I'm currently sitting on 187 and I've wildcarded this week.

I always WC early because I know the players I want going forward over the next 5-6 weeks & it builds up team value pretty early.

However with an early WC you have to stay flexible and be able to try & make moves in around 2 transfers.

      My WC team

      Ederson
      Robbo - Alonso - Mendy
      Mane - Pedro - Richarlison - Miki
      Auba - Aguero - Zaha

Hamer - Fraser - Wan Biss - Bennett

So you’ve had a better start than me and still pulled the trigger.

It’s a good looking wc effort though. It is something I’ve looked at and considered but I’ve resisted thus far.

          It's interesting eh.

It's just down to preference. I think if you haven't already wildcarded this week it's too late now after all the price changes etc.

People will try to tell you when to pull the trigger but just WC when you think it's the right time.

Don’t plan to wildcard, it’s like planning to run out of money !
I’ll use it when I find myself in a spot where I’m taking a -8 or -12 and that still leaves me with fires to put out and a probable hit the next week. Desperate times, it helps you through. Never plan it.

Il wildcard when I feel I need to change 4 of my starting 11 or more and my bench is not playing or injured. Having said that I don’t think I’ve gone past week 4 without wildcarding before, would love to be able to get to week 6 or so before wildcarding this year

Salah and auba are differentials in my ML and I've been punished for owning both!

It's difficult to drop auba ahead of Arsenal's plum fixtures

As for Salah it's still early days but so far Mané has more than matched salah's points and I could really use the extra 3.x infunds

Looking forward to GW4, what are people's thoughts on trying to get a bit of Chelsea into this side:

    McCarthy/Fab

    Robertson/Trippier/Mendy/AWB/Peltier

    Salah/Mane/Mkhi/Richarlson/Neves

    Aguero/Arnautovic/Ings

(1 FT, £0.2 in the bank)

    I had a few ideas:

    1) Salah > Hazard, bank the cash
    2) Trippier > Luiz
    3) Robertson, Trippier > Alonso, TAA (-4)
    4) Trippier > Alonso, find the 0.5 from somewhere else (-4)
    5) Mane > Hazard, find the 0.5 from somewhere (-4)
    6) Leave alone until GW5 when I have 2 FT

    Thoughts?

Already taken a -4 for Bertrand, Jota and King-----> Alonso, Fraser and Ings.

Another -4 to shift Sanchez might be too much although not sure what I'm hoping for against Spurs

Hi all - in a fit of drunken madness, I took a -8 hit to get in Alonso, Pedro and Ings for Bednarek, Never and King (partly for price rise changes which I know (or should have known) is idiotic).

I already have fab and foster in goal, mendy, Robertson and WB in defence, salah, mane and richarlison in mid and aguero and tosun up front so team looks ok i think (and has done fairly well for 1st 2 weeks)

I'm regretting the 8 pt hit though- do you think it's worth wildcarding to wipe out the hits? I would probably get rid of salah for miki and auba instead of tosun

what do you guys think? Is it worth wildcarding now and is the though of going without salah madness? Any thought much appreciated

      I'd save the WC.

Could make the points back with those transfers plus you keep Salah who will be heavily captained this week

If You want the WC to import Arsenal players, just hold. Wait for at least one decent performance.

Might be the opportunity for Jose, who’s not his greatest fan, to drop him.

Also see Jones & Smalling back. Are they both fit now?

Is Valencia fit yet? Not sure dropping a fit Shaw is an option this weekend.

        Darmian - Jones - Smalling - Young

Is my guess....Bailey - Loldorf - Shaw to be scape goats for BHA performance

Jose picking Darmian over a fit Shaw would be a lot of hate.

I’d go Hughes over Kante but that’s just cos to me it makes no sense playing the best defensive mid in the world in an attacking role

Nah, thought long and hard on this and switched Hughes to Kante. Watford's short term fix are poor and Kante is looking great!

Is having all of Alonso Mendy Salah Mane Auba and Kun worth it for the 11 players to be Wan-B or maybe as bad as Stephens or Kamara this week?
Any better suggestion than Ryan especially in the short term?
    Thanks

    Ryan

    Alonso Mendy TAA

Salah (C) Mane Richarlson Frazer Stephens

    Auba Kun

    Hamer Kamara Bennett Wan-B

Looks great! Fraser >> Kenedy and Hamer >> another 4.5 keeper to rotate perhaps

I don't know you think my team is worth the risk. I suppose lots of big hitters could make up for one not great pick but Wan-B should is ok when back in a 442
Also I can always down Mane and upgrade defence when fixture turn. It is tempting but also think it might be short term thinking for a WC
Like the rotating keeper suggestion but I was pick the wrong one and I love Frazer

Net transfer is very much negative. Many going straight Auba to Kun.
Yeah after holding through first 2 tough fixtures seems like insanity but there you go.
