Schar underlines goal threat as budget FPL attacking assets blank

Newcastle United recorded their fourth straight home win and third clean sheet in six Gameweeks as they saw off the challenge of Burnley on Tuesday.

The Magpies’ victory ended Burnley’s own eight-match unbeaten run as the Clarets’ budget Fantasy assets suffered a rare blank after the success stories of recent weeks.

We’ll look at how Rafael Benitez’s side chalked up their latest victory and examine how their own cut-price Fantasy options fared ahead of some more appealing fixtures in the weeks ahead.

Newcastle United 2-0 Burnley

  • Goals: Fabian Schar (£4.7m), Sean Longstaff (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Javier Manquillo (£4.3m)

Newcastle United’s second 2-0 home win in the space of four days was an altogether different affair from the victory over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The procession over the ten-man Terriers in Gameweek 27 always had to be treated with caution from a Fantasy perspective but Tuesday’s triumph over an in-form Burnley side was more of a reliable barometer as to how well the Magpies’ assets are currently performing.

As expected, Miguel Almiron (£6.0m), Salomon Rondon (£5.9m) and Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) had a tougher evening against an improved Clarets defence that had only shipped seven goals in the preceding eight Gameweeks.

As Sean Dyche conceded after the match, Newcastle were the better side but clear-cut chances were few and far between: Perez failing to record a single shot on goal and Rondon’s only meaningful effort being a free header in first-half stoppage time that he couldn’t guide on target.

Still, there were more encouraging signs that Newcastle’s front three will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming weeks as they worked well in tandem at St. James’ Park.

Rondon may have struggled to completely impose himself on James Tarkowski (£4.7m) and Ben Mee (£4.6m) but his presence is always a threat and he registered three key passes on Tyneside last night, more than any other Newcastle player.

Almiron’s searing pace was once again evident, with Tom Heaton (£4.8m) having to rush off his line to deny the Paraguayan midfielder a goalscoring chance before the break.

Newcastle’s club-record signing then had an excellent one-on-one chance after half-time, only for Heaton to deflect Almiron’s effort into the side netting.

While this was a second successive blank for the mid-price midfielder, Almiron has shown plenty of encouragement in his first two Newcastle starts to attract interest from a Fantasy perspective – the Paraguay international had similarly broken free of the visiting defence on Saturday only for his chipped effort to strike the woodwork.

With United’s front three drawing a blank despite their promising displays, it was left to a differential FPL defender and midfielder to seal three points for the hosts.

Fabian Schar (£4.7m) once again underscored his goal threat with a rocket of an opener, his 25-yard effort crashing in off Heaton’s left-hand post.

It’s the Swiss centre-back’s threat from open play as well as set-piece situations that catches the eye and the summer signing from Deportivo de La Coruna has a long-standing reputation as a goal-getting defender, having scored on seven occasions for his country in 46 appearances.

His proclivity to accumulate yellow cards (eight in 16 Premier appearances, just two away from a two-match ban) and United’s competition for places at centre-back have perhaps been deterrents but he is now part of a settled back three in the meanest defence outside of the “big six”, with only two of those Champions League-chasing clubs to come in the remaining ten Gameweeks.

Speaking of his in-form defender, Rafael Benitez said:

We know he is capable of doing that. On the ball, he is good, and now he is improving in defence and the understanding with the other players is getting better.

The Newcastle boss also had positive words to say about Sean Longstaff (£4.5m), who scored his first senior goal to put the cap on his side’s victory.

Benitez said:

I said so many times when he was coming and training with us he was doing well and he was lucky enough to make his debut sooner rather than later because of injuries.

But he deserved to be there and we decided to keep him in the team because he is working hard and playing well and his understanding with Hayden is quite good.

We are really pleased. To have a local lad playing is an example to the rest of the players. You can guarantee when you have local players they are cheaper! And, also, they are committed. Both things are important.

He had a yellow card and they were trying to play on him, focusing on his yellow card. So we had to protect him [by substituting him].

The return to fitness of Ki Sung-yueng (£4.7m), Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m) and Mohamed Diame (£4.8m) is a concern but Longstaff and Isaac Hayden (£4.4m) continue to be two of the more appealing options among bargain-bin FPL midfielders, having started seven and ten successive Premier League matches respectively and having chipped in with attacking returns during that time.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) missed out on Newcastle’s latest clean sheet, meanwhile, being handed a breather to allow Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) a run-out in what was Benitez’s only change to his starting XI.

Dyche made his first alteration to the Burnley line-up in seven Gameweeks, with the sick Ashley Westwood (£4.6m) dropping out, Jeff Hendrick (£5.2m) moved inside to central midfield and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) reinstated on the right flank.

The Clarets’ boss said of Westwood’s ailment:

I think Westy and Corky have had a tremendous little run together, and the way they’ve connected, but unfortunately he went down with sickness so we had to get him a car back because we didn’t want it going through the camp.

We got him home this afternoon in a car to give him some more recovery time and hopefully it just a bug that passes quickly. He was in a hotel room on his own thankfully so he was not around the group so hopefully, we have contained that.

Dyche also provided updates on long-term injury victims Aaron Lennon (£4.9m) and Steven Defour (£5.3m):

We are just waiting on news of what they are going to [with Defour]. It is a calf thing and there are a couple of different options so we are just waiting on some clarity on what they are actually going to decide to do.

He was seeing one of the specialists (on Tuesday). I will have to wait and see what the specialists’ report is.

Azza is making really good progress but is not there yet obviously.

Burnley created little from open play but preyed on Newcastle’s vulnerability from crosses and at set plays, with the majority of their chances coming from corners or free-kicks.

Tarkowski wasted an Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) assist when volleying over from close range, while Chris Wood (£6.2m) stung the palms of Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) and substitute Matej Vydra (£5.6m) couldn’t scramble the ball past the Slovakian goalkeeper after yet another set-piece delivery.

With his FPL ownership down to 1.1%, Gudmundsson might be an interesting differential for the remaining Gameweeks if he can now nail down a starting role: no player on show at St. James’ Park created more chances or registered more shots, with the Iceland international’s set-piece deliveries a valuable tool in his locker with the likes of Barnes, Wood, Mee and Tarkowski to aim at.

Tarkowski recorded another three attempts on goal on Tyneside and now only three FPL assets in any position (let alone defence) have registered more efforts from inside the opposition six-yard box this season.

Barnes and Wood struggled to get much change from Newcastle’s three centre-backs, with Barnes’ only effort on goal being a blocked shot in the second half.

Both of the Clarets’ in-form strikers were substituted on a rare off-day for the pair but Burnley at least have three home matches in the next four Gameweeks to look forward to, for those Fantasy owners disenchanted with Tuesday night’s returns.

Another Burnley asset to be withdrawn was budget midfielder Dwight McNeil (£4.5m), who was hooked at half-time.

Dyche said of his young prospect:

When you are young, the games do catch you out sometimes.

We wanted him to again because we got him off on Saturday early and we thought he’d be fine, the energy would be there.

I think sometimes it just catches the young players out, particularly physically and sometimes mentally because it was a big game playing on TV against Tottenham and it was another big game tonight for different reasons.

He’s been fantastic. We did wonder: ‘can you get that next one out of him?’, but I thought he was good Saturday and he just found it tough tonight.

Dyche lamented a “really poor” first half and suggested this was perhaps just one game too far for his in-form side:

It’s a strange one to analyse. We certainly weren’t at the races in the first half and you can’t help but think back to Saturday’s result and all the euphoria that goes with beating one of the big six.

If we’d had a free week, all that furore might have calmed down, but when you hit the big teams as we did on Saturday with a terrific performance and you have to go and do it all again a few days later – well, that’s what it looked like.

In the second half, I thought there was a response. We were a little more like our old selves.

The energy came back and without being amazing, we huffed and puffed and created one or two things. At least it looked a bit more like us.

Newcastle United XI (3-4-2-1): Dubravka; Schar, Lascelles, Lejeune; Manquillo, Longstaff (Diame 85′), Hayden, Ritchie; Perez (Joselu 87′), Almiron (Dummett 80′); Rondon.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Hendrick, Cork, McNeil (Brady 46′); Wood (Vydra 83′), Barnes (Crouch 71′).

    Please choose the best movement:
    A. Chambers + Son >> Luiz + Hazard
    B. Rashford + Richarlison >> Zaha + Hazard

Note: Plan for FH 31 and Build for DGW 32 & BGW 33

Curious if you’ve considered FH 33 instead.

You’d only need a couple of Chelsea and Liverpool to survive 31. There’s really little threat from high scoring differentials as few will hold them.

FH 33 could give you a real advantage over those stockpiling budget players. You could have 3 Pool, 3 Chelsea 3 Arsenal and possibly Spurs too. Potentially there could be s big upside and it looks he more dangerous week.

I will take out Auba (most likely for Vardy) this GW, and then take a hit to get rid of Richarlison. Would you rather bring in Hazard now, or get Sterling for 2GWs before changing to the Belgian in 31?

This is all I've seen re Rashford, from the local paper...

Marcus Rashford was not seen arriving with Manchester United's injured players at the club's Carrington training base on Wednesday morning to improve hopes of his involvement in the game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Kane loves a London derby. Auba and Arsenal are terrible in big games and then have MUN which is a tough fixture whilst Kane faces Southampton.

From memory, he does tend to score past Arsenal, but those games are normally tight so it's a single goal and maybe bonus, rather than a huge haul if you know what I mean.

If Brighton get past Millwall in the FA Cup quarter final, we're going to have another DGW aren't we? Either in 36 or 37 featuring either Tottenham vs Brighton or Brighton vs Cardiff.

    Is this correct?

Brighton play DGW32 (probably vs Chelsea) and then have two more blank fixtures to rearrange if they beat Millwall leaving them with DGW35 and one more.

If an extra DGW is required, then it is likely to feature Brighton v Cardiff, since Spurs are still in the Champions League.
Spurs v Brighton is more likely to be in DGW35.

I don't understand the current trend of 'Top Managers are not performing well'.

There are plenty of top managers with good ranks. The people around me know what they are doing - I wish they didn't.

There are some people with big Social Media followings who are not 'Top Managers' and offer bad advice. Unsurprisingly these are doing poorly. Whilst most players who know what they are doing are experiencing good ranks. It is too much of a tough season for casuals to hold good ranks. Unlike some other seasons i.e. last season.

You may want to re-assess the word 'expert'.

Some of these Twitter accounts do amuse me. Put FPL in front of your name, write a load drivel like 10 years FPL experience, 6 x Top 0.1%... and bingo, you're an expert.

Certain people in the FPl comm in twitter are decent people, dont get me wrong, but lack the pedigree and history to be called 'experts'. They are even called that by @OfficialFPL. Granted, they didnt call thekselves that, not their fault, but have the feeling the word expert is woven around how much of a following does an account get.

Exactly. I didn’t play last season (17/18) as I was becoming addicted in 16/17 (finished 802nd) bit I went into this season thinking I was a player. Starting to think top 1k was fluke instead of dedication

To be fair, "good" and "bad" rankings are a matter of perspective, ain't it?for example, 30k ranks may seem like an 'off season rank' to some, but I'd kill to get that come GW38!
For the Jays and the Marks of the world, the masses always expect them to be at least benchmark top 10k every week, which is unrealistic. Wait until after the DGWs at least to judge.

I am not sure you should use Mark and Jay in the same breath when talking about great managers. Mark is undoubtedly a great. Jay is not the guru he makes out to be.

Haja, I just heard that expression used recently. Love Mark, top class manager and person, but Jay isn't my cup of tea either. I can tolerate other ppl calling someone else an expert, but ppl calling themselves a "guru" seems a bit conceited imo, even if they have the ranks to back it up.

Mark is as top class manager and I try and beat him every season, but don't usually succeed. This season I am about 800 places behind him, and that is my revised target for the season, to finish in front of him. This doesn't stop me from wishing him well each gameweek, as I like to see peoples dedication rewarded. Just because Jay isn't having a great season doesn't mean he isn't an expert as well. It's up to all of us to sieve all the advice we are given and to make the week by week choices ourselves. What the experts do ( and thank goodness for them) is to show us options and alternatives. Some weeks I may spend a ridiculous amount of time on FPL and other weeks only 5 minutes, it is then when I appreciate the time they put in. If you don't want to call them experts that's fair enough but al least recognise what they do for us. This comment is not aimed at any previous post just my opinion.
Long live FPL it gives me so much pleasure.

Everyone has the same budget, same number of transfers and same players to pick from. You can't motivate your players or influence what they do either. Not totally sure what distinguishes a "top manager" from tens of thousands of other managers other than some good luck/decisions at the right times.

Patience in the right players. Jumping early on the right players. Ignoring the random bandwagons. Sensible captain choices. Infrequent hits.

Yeah, but this is just all under "good decisions at the right times" - thousands have the opportunity / ability to do this, though granted some don't execute as consistently as others.

Too many are too rash. For example I have held Jimenez all season. Is there a better 5.5m striker? No. So I hold. If he doesn't score for 2 games people look to jump ship etc to whoever scored in the last match. Sometimes patience is key.

In another season that strategy wouldn't have worked though. Was there something that you saw in games/stats that made you hold or was it just a "hold because he's great value".

At the beginning of the season I felt Wolves would be mid-table. He looked nailed on and I felt he would be worth a punt. I was quite prepared that he might become Ings or any striker between 5.5m > 7m. I got a little lucky that he has been as good as he has. The point is a few weeks in and this wasn't going to change. He looked like a season keeper and nothing has ever changed that. I believe that if Wilson had stayed fit the same would have been true of him. I have held Doherty since GW3 - it was obvious by then that he was a player to get onside with. AWB since 4m. A nailed on 4m defender at a mid table side is a nailed on 5th defender. Never a reason to move him on. The same is true with Pogba & Rashford. As soon as Ole took over and they smashed Cardiff they needed to come in.I held RAM - Robertson has stayed all season - the others forced their way out. it means that my team hasn't changed much. I can hold these players who are good season keepers and just move out the odd player here and there. It hasn't been perfect. I didn't own Wilson at the beginning of the season and didn't own Salah through his Bournemouth game. If I had i would be eyeing up the title and not just a 1k finish.

And this is why I think blaming a bad season on luck is a bit of a copout. You're doing very well but you've still been on the end of some tough situations. That Salah game was a big blow. No Wilson was costing you points. We can't get every decision right, and even the managers in the top 10k, top 1k, and top 100 have made some poor calls and had some bad luck. Just like with the PL itself, after 38 GWs your OR is probably at least roughly where it deserves to be, give or take of course.

I am still frustrated by the big things that haven't gone my way this season and there have been plenty. It's hard not thinking about where I could be if I'd just made a few slightly different 50-50 calls that have cost me 10-20 points here and there e.g. the Deulofeu and Digne hauls sitting first on my bench, Sane's 1-pointer as captain in the DGW, etc. It's a long list of frustrations just like everyone else.

Also having as many of these set and forget budget players as you can really helps you to attack in other areas. I've taken something like 14 hits this season but they are almost always for big moves involving multiple players with great fixtures, or to get in the optimal premium assets for captaincy over a short period. This is made possible by not constantly fighting small fires that I've created myself. My defence didn't change for ages once I had Doherty, AWB, Robertson, Digne. And Jimenez up front. Even Deulofeu (while regrettably benching him last GW) has stayed in my squad a long time because I didn't think at that price it was worth worrying about his form, as he was as likely as anyone else around that price to get attacking returns if you actually watched him play. Leaving half your squad alone for long periods allows you to be very proactive elsewhere.

It's funny though because all season I've been told by various people that I've been really lucky. The thing is, when I review my own season to date, I've lost out on so many points through either bad luck or bad decisions. It doesn't feel like it has been a charmed run at all! Consistent definitely, but not filled with good fortune imo.

Exactly. I had Digne on my bench. There is 18 points. I didn't own Salah vs Bournemouth. There is 40 points. I didn't own Wilson. 30 points. I just backed out of captaining Aguero for his first hat trick earlier this season 20 points. I would be top of the Number 1 in the World had I got those decisions right. Fact is, it happens and the Salah one is the only one I really should have done better.

There you go, that is loads of points you've missed out on. Imagine how high your OR would be with a few of those going your way. It happens to everyone.

I would also be OR1 if my few notable 50-50s had worked out:

                      - Benched Digne (17 points)
                      - Benched Deulofeu (23 points)
                      - Benched Jimenez (12 points)
                      - Benched Rashford due to the injury doubt and chance of cameo but he played (12 points)
                      - Captained Salah instead of Sterling even though I took a hit to bring in Sterling and had armband on him right up until almost deadline but got worried about rotation when he scored 21 points (19 points difference).
                      - Captained Sane in the DGW but owned Aguero (16 points)

That's about 100 points in 6 decisions and every single decision was roughly 50-50 in my head at the time. All of those benched players were in the #1 bench spot too, so I was worried about them but my depth was strong at the time, and not once did I get a lucky player in my starting 11 blank for some jammy bench points - even though I saw loads of teams get these points from off their bench thanks to an injury or rotation.

Oh and Kolasinac owner losing those 10 points in the dying seconds the other week, only for the goal to be given to the attacker later on! I've actually been cursing my bad luck in this game lately, so I think it's a bit rich for people to blame really low ranks on bad luck.

Though I don't use stats at all, just ruins the fun for me, I think effective use of them is a probably a skill.

In previous seasons, just playing through an entire season is what constituted a "good" manager seeing how many gave up.

To be fair I didn't write the headline for the hot topic. I just wrote the OP and got into a discussion, but I was specifically referring to a couple of well known managers and wondering it was going wrong for them this season; I was not declaring that 'top managers are not performing well'.

The original comment wasn't really directed at you. I have noticed that it seems to be an accepted point of fact that top managers are struggling. I don't think it is the case. It is a tricky season (which makes it more interesting) and things have taken several different routes. Throw in all the complications of blank and doubles and it is an exciting season. It isn't like last season when captaining Salah every game gave you a top 50k rank. You have to work for it this year and some 'experts' are being found out.

Fair enough, I hadn't noticed that. And I agree with you, it's not necessarily the case at all. I basically wondered how and why a manager like Jay could fall so far from grace, but what evidence are people using to suggest that lots of top managers are doing badly this season?

I also think it's an exciting and interesting season, and yes perhaps some managers are struggling to adapt to the different trends. Essentially I'm calling shenanigans on all this 'bad luck', because it actually feels like a season where skill is required more than ever to navigate all the issues like increased rotation, premium asset form, broader variety of captaincy options etc.

Agreed. I'm finding this season much more interesting than last. Even though my rank is disappointing, because of the variety in gameweeks I've always held a thought that it's possible to climb up again.

There is no easy out for any manager in any week this year - lots of surprises and much more important to be flexible and follow the trends.

The @ManUtdMEN report that Marcus Rashford - who is facing a late fitness test - was not spotted arriving with the rest of the injured players at Carrington. The in-form striker had been flagged as a doubt after suffering an ankle injury during Sundays' 0-0 draw with LFC. #MUFC

You mean he's too injured to be treated at Carrington 🙂
      Blimey!

I feel sick I transferred him out.

It was always a risk removing him, he was never confirmed out.

you're not the only one mate, I panic transferred him out for Rondon at deadline. Gutted if he plays because I really wanted to save the transfer

Its not like the only 2 options are that he arrives at Carrington with the other injured players or is in the squad for tonight's game. He could be at home resting. We'll soon find out.

Yeah I don't really see how this implies he'll be playing tonight, IMO it's very likely he's just resting considering his ankle was 'the size of a balloon' 3 days ago.

Ole's already come out and said it wasn't as bad as he first feared, and that he has a chance of playing. It's much more likely that he's travelled with the team and a decision will be made in due course.

Ah ok this makes sense, I didn't look at all the facts and because they're playing away it makes sense that he has travelled with the team. Hopefully he isn't needed because I took him out for a hit to get in Aguero. Also took out Son, can see that being a mistake come the end of the evening.

It doesn't matter because you can't change your team. I benched him. Seemed prudent at the time. If you sold him you did without news.

Pick one for GW 28, play:

    A) Lascelles (whu)
    B) JWP (mnu)
    C) Niasse (wol)
    D) Bring in Ashley/Harves Barnes with 1FT and play them

    cheers

Probably A, but weirdly Wolves away isn't a bad game for Cardiff. It's the kind of game Doherty cleanies get wiped out for.

      Son to Hazard.

I wish I had this luxury, but it's likely to be Sterling to Hazard for me, just hope he blanks tonight so his price might drop before the weekend.

Looks decent but who are you shipping out and when?

I too could get 11 without hits but don’t really feel the need. Last week and this one so far have convinced me off trying to fill out my team.

Think I’m going to be happy with 9/10.

Vardy. I too am getting Vardy and Hazard in this week. Given their woeful form, I feel Chelsea double up is risky, despite playing Fulham! Vardy has home to Fulham next week (first home game for new manager...)

In a planning for this weekends GW and 1 eye on BGW 31...

Lacazette's next 3 fixtures are Spurs / City / Blank

    I'm seriously considering Higuain....

Chelsea next 3 - Fulham / Wolves / Everton (cardiff after that)....

I think Spurs could thump them tonight - and who knows Sarri could be out on his ar$e but...

If Higuain is going to start hitting the mark - that has to be a run of fixtures to do it.
