Interview with Fantasy Eliteserien expert Jonas Bergh-Johnsen

In our latest video and podcast, Joe chats to TV journalist Jonas Bergh-Johnsen, who has been closely involved with the development of Norway’s top-flight game, Fantasy Eliteserien.

As a football reporter and host for TV channel Discovery Norway and co-host of Fantasy Football podcast, Fantasy FK, he is among a group of experts that Eliteserien Fantasy’s developers have called on for advice.

During his interview with Joe, Jonas explains how he has helped ensure this season’s pricing aims to reflect points potential across all teams and why bargain hunters will have to work even harder this time around.

While Fantasy Eliteserien’s gameplay and interface will be familiar to Fantasy Premier League managers, Jonas discusses the notable differences.

Chief among these is the game’s innovative chips, including the ‘Rich Uncle’ that offers Fantasy managers the chance to deploy a free hit with an unlimited budget.

Another is Fantasy Eliteserien’s use of a ‘man in the stands’ method of choosing bonus. Meanwhile, Norway top-flight calendar means that Double Gameweeks can often arrive early, due to cup commitments and the Scandinavian weather.

His top player picks for the start of the season are also revealed, as is his strategy for dealing with the first Double Gameweek of the season in Round 2.

Jonas also talks about his love of Fantasy Premier League. This season he is currently ranked inside the top 3,000, has two top 500 finishes and a further two in the top 1,500 across his ten-year career.

Whether you are a long time Fantasy Eliteserien player or looking to play for the first time, Jonas offers invaluable advice ahead of this season’s launch on March 30.

        have kepa in goal.
yeah dilva goes to opponent box so much and more goal threat

United defence - everyone seems to have 1 united defender in their team. I’m not convinced.

They have kept very few clean sheets this season. Other than Shaw who is on 9 YC, they offer almost no potential attacking returns.

2x Chelsea, 1 x City, 1 x Palace for the back 3 and goal keeper seems more appealing?

I agree but Chelsea & City defenders are more expensive than Lindelof / Shaw.

I agree. Lindelof especially is such a boring pick with a low ceiling. If I go with a utd defender it's going to be Young for a bit more spice. Noone else appeals.

But I'd go further and say no city defenders either. It's a waste of a city attacking slot and theyre hardly watertight at the back.

I wouldn't go so far with MCI defenders. The last time I dropped Laporte in DGW he scored 17 points or something.

That was a freak. Laporte has scored more than 6 points only twice this season, an 8 and the 15 in the double. As a rule of thumb, if city don't keep a clean sheet, he's getting you 2 points, and has a ceiling of 6.

        I don’t love either

Lindelof (see above). Deulofeu and Deeney big game time risks.

Haven’t made my mind up on spurs. Liverpool is a bad fixture and looking at stats of games at new stadiums and palace vs spurs I’m not convinced there will be many goals. I also feel like Son is exhausted and of him Alli, Erickson he is always the one to have his minutes managed.

But if you want a simple A or B then B (just)

Why do you think Watford are "big game time risk"?
They play 30.03 mun, 02.04 FUL and 07.04 FA cup

Where do you see the risk? 3 and 5 days between the games

Because when they played Man City in the league - 7 days before they played Palace in the FA cup QFs, they made 8 changes to their team.
When you factor in Ben Foster - who is the league keeper, and Gomes the FA cup keeper - that's only two outfield players who kept their place.

                      Yes I think so.
I only asked as I thought it was very obvious that Watford were getting so dominated/frustrated with Man City possession that they were forced into bringing Deeney and Deulofeu on to give them an out ball, and counter attacking threat.
I wouldn't expect Fulham to cause them any such problems.

I know... that was as I said an exception. The rule is they play every game. Deeney was benched once in last 10 and still came from the bench in City game. Deulofeu the same although he plays less minutes. He was benched 1 in last 14 games. Came from bench and scored.

I know all of that. But it was still exception to the rule. He did it once. Even if he will try to do it again it would rather be versus Man Utd not Fulham. I don't expect Watford to get a good result in Old Trafford anyway. But I can understand the concerns. Deulofeu and Deeney probably play in both but not more than 120 minutes altogether.

Mate, it's your team, pick who you like, but the precedent for major rotation prior to the FA cup game couldn't be more obvious.
If anything I expect Deeney/Deulofeu to play at OT, and be rested against an already relegated Fulham side who Watford second string should still be able to get a result against.

I think it's very obvious that now they are in the latter stages of the FA cup, and have a decent chance of getting to the final, nothing to play for in the league, so FA cup takes priority.
If they had gone out of the FA cup in the 3rd round, there is no way he would have just put out the second string against Man City because it was a tough game.

Fair points - I think this week is difficult to judge for Watford because it comes off the back of an international break where a lot of their squad aren't heavily involved. If anything is the rotation not more likely to come at Old Trafford and the Fulham game used to build confidence for the cup game?

                  1. HamezMace
                    • 9 Years

                    I personally don't think so.
As you say not many of their team will be away with international football, so I would expect a stronger team against United, and a rotated team against Fulham.
Watford second string should still be enough to give Fulham a good match (unlike the City game, where they literally got smashed for 65 minutes, and were forced to call for Deeney to give them an out ball).

Look, none of us know what teams/players are going to play in the doubles, but the very obvious tactic the manager employed against City, 7 days prior to an FA cup QF, is evidence enough to be more than cautious with Watford players in 32.
Anything else is pure denial because you need a budget option like Deulofeu to get the team you want.

You may be right, but you don't know the motif he benched all his first team against City. Do you? They are 8th and 1 point behind Wolves. I want to remind you that 7th may also get them to Europe. It is easier to get points vs Fulham than MUtd away. They have 2 paths open. If they fail in FA Cup they can still finish in 7th and play Europe.

Can you think of a more obvious reason for the full team rotation against City other than the FA cup QF?

I'm wondering this.... but I'm wondering if we're looking at it from the wrong angle.

Were they rested for City because they weren't realistically going to win the match and didn't want to flog their assets? Playing weaker opposition like Fulham, they'll want to fight for that European place.

Same also applies for the United match - give it a good go with the reserves and accept the loss, then play your best lineup when you have a better chance of getting results.

I just don't see why he would play his strongest team in a game that's 1. easier on paper, and 2. closer to the more important FA cup semi final.

...you could argue, as Miguel has, to build confidence, but I just don't buy it I'm afraid.

I fully expect Success/Gray to start against Fulham.

...I could be wrong, and will accept any LOL'ing that should come my way. But I can't understand why people are ignoring the already set precedent of rotation prior to an FA cup match, and can only assume it's because Deulofeu ticks the box for the budget 4th mid, with a DGW.

Yeah I agree with both, it's just so annoying that I can't trust a single Watford asset against Fulham at home.

There's a hat-trick in the offing there... I might just opt for Gray.

Foster is the only player you could consider safe, as he's not their FA cup keeper (Gomes is).
But do you want him away to United, probably not.

      Anyone able to answer this?

My first team has fell 120points behind the leader of my mini league and I doubt I’ll catch up.

My other team, set up under my cat’s name and barely managed, is at 26k globally and on 1849 points.

If the cat’s team was to enter my mini-league would she start with 1850 points or with 0 points?

(if she did start with her 1850 she’d be top of the league)

      Cheers

You could get in some Spurs cover, but it's no City defensive cover that concerns.

DDG, Azpi, Dilva to Ederson, Lindelöf or Smalling and Son/Alli or Eriksen

Even if he starts a game, he doesnt play 90 mins. Solly March was benched over the last games and Knock got starts, but my guess would be one start for each. Gross also injured during the last 2 games so maybe with him back minutes will be shared between attacking mids. Trying to find one myself but cant look past Murray.

If you HAVE to choose one of Spurs midfield, who would it be?

      A. Son
      B. Alli
      C. Eriksen

Personally I think Alli and Eriksen would rather start 2 games than Son. But its a tough choice. Alli hadnt much gametime of late and Eriksen not many points.

      A) Townsend + Valery (goal threat but single GW)
      B) Delofeue + 4.2 (Marriappa?) - really wanted Tompkins (4.3) but 0.1 short 🙁

I’m leaning towards A as I means I’m not playing against any of players and I think I favour the fixtures more even though it has one less fixture.
